I nearly died last night on the M1 motorway!

Saturday, December 16, 2006

I know it sounds like a song but its not.  I was driving home last night southbound on the M1 motorway coming into the roadworks around juction 10.  All the traffic was filtering into the inside lane and slowing down, all I could see ahead of me was a sea of red lights and hazard lights warning the people behind.

Then for some reason I glimsed in my rear view mirror, all I saw was then lights of an hgv lorry (Walkers Crisps) steaming towards me. Slam!!!!  The rest is a little hazy but I know the car was thrown forward and I don't think I impacted with the car infront but instead was picked up rolled and after what seemed the an age ended upside down in the car with the seat belt holding me into the seat.  It was like being in a washing machine with a load of glass.  The lorry then proceeded to steam train into a further 6 cars all of which I think have been written off!!!  It was absolute carnage!!

I undid the seat belt and crawled out the side window and colapsed on the hard shoulder.  I had been badly hurt by the shattered glass and had blood dripping down my head/face but luckily other than that and some bad bruises with a little wiplash, I'm ok.  I spent the night in Luton and Dunstable hospital and got home at 7am.

The car is a complete right off and its only because my seat belt pinned me to the seat and the car did what it was supposed to do that I survived.  The policeman said it was a miracle that I wasn't serverly hurt and the same for a kind Italian business man whos car was damaged more than mine. I think I'm lucky that my little car was picked up and thrown out the way and not sqaushed under the lorry or squashed back and front.

I just wanted to say thank you to all the nice people that stopped and came and helped me at the side of the road especially the woman that was hugging me and talking to my sister on my moible.  I'd like to say a big thanks to the police, fireman and paramedics that helped at the too.  I certainly had a guardian angel last night.

To the lorry driver that was probably on his mobile, playing with his sat nav or even half asleep, I don't think you realise the power you hold by driving such a big vehicle.  You could have ended 7 peoples lives last night and have ruined whats meant to be a happy time of year.  I hope the law comes down hard on you and that your Christmas is runined as much as mine!

I now face a long period of insurace shi*t and will only get base rate for my car so will be out of pocket because of this arsehole.  I won't be able to find something for the same price/age in the same condition as I really looked after it.  My snowboard was damaged but my new snow board boots were crushed in the boot and don't work like they should.

By the way in the pictures you'll see the side of a silver car which was also involved in the accident and was owned by the Italian buiness man.  You can see the force that the lorry hit!!!
