The devil was at the bar, okay?

 He just slithered over beside Earth Brown and put some poison in his water. 

And Earth took a big hit of it right after that, 

right before he walked up to see Sun and dance with her and invite her to go to Alaska.

 I don't think he felt anything yet. 

But Earth had been poisoned, there's no doubt about it.
