Approaching
A light is cast out into the eerie night sky.
Just slightly visible along the horizon.
Too far to touch, yet to close to avoid.
Slight wisps of sand trickle through the beam of light, dancing playfully in the wind. Tempting me to walk closer.
What do I do?
A light breeze is slowly crawling up my back, and running its cool fingers through my hair.
I am entranced by the feelings of solitude. A leaf falls from a nearby tree, and I can hear every swoosh and swish it makes as it cuts through the nighttime air with a crisp, distinctive sound.
I take a step forward.
My knee yells at me not to go. My Feet press on regardless.
I take another step forward, this time my calf muscle is screaming for me to stop. My Feet press on.
I am suddenly forced to stop walking.
I feel a drop of water roll down my forearm, down the back of my hand, down my ring finger. I lift my hand up to examine the drop, and try to figure out where it came from. I look around myself, and realize that it isn't raining. I look back at my hand, and the drop disappears.
I can feel the cool fingers of the wind starting to gently pull at the back of my hair.
Pulling me backwards.
I can't help myself; I am forced to take a step back.
My Knee screams for Joy. My Feet keep falling behind me. Step by step I'm taking an involuntary retreat.
Please stop. Please.
I hear a snap. A noise so loud, and distinctive, it could only be one thing. The power of the sound alone hits me with the force of a hundred bricks. Suddenly I'm on the ground. I can't seem to use any extremity of my body.
My fingers are going numb. The tingeling feeling is racing itself up my left arm, and across my chest. I can hear my knees screaming at me. I shouldn't have moved. My feet suddenly yell in pain, as the numbness has reached them, and they have lost their battle.
I try to reach out to the light with my one last ounce of strength, but the light is just too far.
I look around myself, but nothing is moving. All I can see is the beam of light, and the wisps of sand trickling through it.
I hear a crack of wood behind me. I try to yell out.
Nothing escapes.
Nothing. Escapes.
I can no longer reach. I can no longer move.
Life seems so worthless at this point.
The little amount of air that is near me is vanishing quickly.
I make one last effort to cry out again.
It is too late.
