After a week of consistent snow, the riding here in Whistler is back in business! We're into our 5th week of camp and the second group of long term campers are packing their bags and preparing to hit town as we speak.
Christmas in the camp houses was celebrated in true Whistler style with wine and cheese, pressies, partying in town and of course, Christmas day spent riding on the mountain... how else would you rather spend your holidays?!
We're super stoked that we've been able to take our groups to secret powder stashes on the mountain without getting stuck in long holiday lift lines. Also, now that the upper alpine lifts are staring to open, we're looking forward to some steep pow runs in the bowls and maybe a hike or two for some of the best untracked powder on the mountain. It's that kind of inside local knowledge that means we can ride harder, faster and in deeper pow that anyone else hahaha!
The terrain parks are already starting to look good. The Nintendo Park on Blackcomb has a number of hip, box and rail features and a couple of jumps. As more snow falls we'll begin to see the Terrain Garden (beginner's park) and Higher Level (XL) parks take shape. We're also looking forward to seeing the double rainbow stall feature and dancefloor jibs they're building in the Whistler park using the cable reels from the construction of new Peak to Peak gondola.
It even looks like there's almost enough snow for our first backcountry jump day to be held in a secret location yet to be revealed... can't wait!
Happy New Year form the team at Proride. Hope your new year sounds as exciting as ours!

Local Whistler Coaching Company Ramps Up Program Offerings in Response to U.S. H2B Visa Shortage
As the international community of snowboard instructors and coaches scrambles to find work outside of the U.S. for the 2008/9 winter season, Whistler B.C.'s Pro Ride has chosen to step up training program offerings to entice snowboard pros to stay in the industry and work in Canada. After running successful coaching and instructional programs for the past 10 years, Pro Ride has announced its plan to increase instructional training programs for snowboard coaches and instructors who would otherwise have worked at U.S. resorts prior to the H2B visa shortage, which was announced in January of 2008.
“The current difficulties the US ski industry is experiencing with the lack of H2B visas for temporary workers reinforces the opportunities for international workers to come and train and work in Canada,” said Anthony Crute, the founder and head coach of Pro Ride. “While the H2B visa situation will hopefully be rectified within the next year, instructors and coaches can get a start in Canada and prepare themselves for US employment." Crute's emphasis on bringing on professional athletes and internationally certified coaches to train Pro Ride participants has produced instructors who now are employed at winter resorts around the world.
Pro Ride and its impressive roster of coaches begin offering programs as early as December of 2008.

Since 1997 Pro Ride has been offering freeride, freestyle and snowboard instructor winter training camps for adult riders from all over the world. By surrounding campers with a hand picked team of world class coaches and professional / Olympic athletes, Pro Ride delivers a fun, flexible, personal and progressive snowboarding experience at the home of the 2010 winter Olympics, Whistler / Blackcomb.
The coming winter must be on a few peoples minds (other than those people who are experiencing it in the southern hemisphere). I turned on the tv the other night and caught two major US cable shows featuring snowboarding in Whistler. E Weekend News had a full feature on Whistler and then Gene Simmons - Family Jewels (Of KISS fame - the guy with the makeup and big tongue) started a two show feature on Whistler and one of our coaches was on the show.
Gene Simmons Family Jewels
I knew that Ryan (Rausch) had done some work with Gene during the world ski and snowboard festival here in Whistler this April. What I didn't know was just how cheesy the show was going to be. Gene is all about making $$ and he owns a label called "Money Bags". During the show they were looking for a new face for "Money Bags" and Ryan was one of their options. Ryan definitely got the best deal out of the three candidates as he scored a heli day and some snowmobile time. It he hadn't blown out his knee during the filming (a total put on - Ryan is fine) he would have been the new face of "Money Bags". Funny stuff and all scripted. You may be able to check it out this out later this week

We got an up close look at the new gondola while heading up to the glacier this summer and it really is a marvel of engineering. The lift station itself is a huge building and they have already strung the guide wires across the valley for the new cable system. Check out some pictures at

From Anthony and the Team at Pro Ride
The snow keeps falling here in Whistler. We now have had 29 feet of snow that has fallen so far this year and over 3 months left of the ski season. We are offering training all the way until the end of April for our groups and custom training into May. We are busy planning our 'World Trips' and the NZ Trip for September is up on the web site if you would like to come.
Over the past month we have had loads going on.
We successfully completed our second road trip for the season down to Mt Baker with our 12 week campers and were met with fantastic conditions. It was quite the adventure as I found out that my wife Karen was going into labour just as we were putting in our first powder runs of the day at Mt Baker. The day was a real blast for me. We shredded powder all morning with sunny skies and then rallied back to Vancouver to make it just in time for Baylee to be born - you really can't beat that for a day to remember. Check out www.pro-ride.com/diary.cfm for the pictures of the day.
Instructor Results
We have had excellent results from our Level 2 crew who did their exams and a couple of them who wanted to work have already been hooked up with employment with Whistler Blackcomb for the remainder of the season. A good friend of ours who does the hiring for the school came by the camp house and chatted with the crew about how to gain employment with the mountain and at the end of his session offered work to the people who were interested.
Jump Day
We have a backcountry style jump day planned for Friday which should be a blast. We have snow forecasted all the way to Friday which is going to make for super soft landings. As a bonus, Cooler - European Women's Life Style Magazine will be on hand to document the activities. Jump day just happens to correspond with one of the campers birthdays so it is going to be quite an affair.

Competition News
Lots of great results this month from the crew. Ryan Rausch has been travelling the globe and is dominating as usual. Crispin Lipscomb was in Italy for the World Cup Half Pipe and took the win for Canada. This is only a week after winning the Showcase Showdown. The boy is on fire!

Hey Crew,
The past month has blown by and the camps have been busier as ever. We have had fantastic snow conditions here in Whistler and showcased some of the shred action at
Availability for Camp
February is now pretty much booked up for long term courses however we do have space for February 12th, 16th and 23rd for one week camps. With all the snow we have it is going to be an awesome spring. We do have space for the 1,2 4, 6 and 8 week programs starting March 1st and the 4 week programs starting the beginning of April. March is traditionally one of the months where we receive a considerable amount of snow fall so it is a great month to come and ride powder before the spring.
If you are keen to come out and train then drop us an email or register on-line at www.pro-ride.com
Coach News
Neil Connolly has just flown out to Korea with Crispin Lipscomb to compete in the FIS half pipe event and Anthony Leffelaar is in Vegas for the trade snow. Anthony is then off to Salt Lake City to shoot photos for Spy as he is now on their international snowboard team.

With Xmas pretty much done the only thing left to do around our house is to finish off all the turkey left over's. Yesterday Crispin Lipscomb, myself and a couple of the Slednecks crew headed out into the Whistler backcountry for a few turns to burn off the turkey. We have variable lighting as the clouds were moving in and out however the snow was EPIC. It was some of the deepest and lightest snow I have ridden in Whistler for a long time.
Whistler has now had more than 11 feet of snow this winter and the snow at he resort and the backcountry is in great shape. Our Pro Ride camps are smoking busy and we are just in the process of finishing off week 4. We have campers from all over the globe out training with us to improve the freestyle, freeriding and working on gaining their instructor certifications so that can crack into the lifestyle of a full time snowboarder.

This winter has not only been crazy busy for the camp it has also been the best start for snow since I have lived in Whistler over the past 11 years. The parks are in the best shape that I have ever seen them with loads of great features to ride and the freeriding is amazing.
The forecast is for more snow this week and with our average snowfall for the winter being 33 feet we are looking like we may beat that by the end of January.
We have seen many days like this so far this winter.

The first week of camp has been and gone and things are looking awesome for next week. We have half of meter of snow forecast for this week and the riding has been the best early season riding I have seen in Whistler int he 11 years I have lived here.
We have Neil Connolly (4th in last years Showcase Showdown) joining the team this year as one of our pro guides and Australian Olympic team member Emily Thomas is back this week to lend a hand and give a few tips to the ladies.
We have a few places available for the camps towards the end of this month (see Camps >>) plus we have the Christmas junior development camp coming up December 26 - 31 click here >>
Come ride with on our freeride camp for the week of December 16th and you will get a chance to be one of the first people to ride the new chair on Whistler which will open up 1000 acres of new lift accessed terrain.

The snow has been piling up with over a meter of snow in the alpine in the past 4 days and enough snow in the valley to ride.
We have been out and about sessioning a few rails at the bottom of Blackcomb plus we hooked up with some guys who had made their own slider and were sessioning in a car park in Nordic. Things are looking good and there may be an unofficial opening this weekend on Whistler.

With half a meter of new snow due this weekend things are looking good for the start of the season. The mountain opens in a couple of weeks and we can't wait.
We still have a deal running until the 14th of November for two extra lift tickets for free when booking a 2 week freestyle or freeride camp. So if you are thinking about coming out this is a great deal and a savings of about $140 CAD.
Our Junior camp is also coming up Christmas week and thanks to some savy deals we have put in place we have now got the price down to $1450 click here >> This will be a great chance to push your riding and take a break from School at Whistler Blackcomb - the number 1 resort in North America for the 10th year running.
You can keep an eye on what we are up to on the diary pages which will be updated weekly
Cheers
Anthony

In keeping to our traditions of supporting companies which we can truly relate to DAKINE has come on board for the 2006/2007 winter season. At the camp we have been using DAKINE products for many years and it is great that we now have a new arrangement which will see our campers and coaches benefit from having DAKINE come on board as an industry sponsor. You can check out our other supporters at Pro Ride Snowboard Camps
“We are looking forward to being able to ride the new lift which Whistler is building this summer out in the Flute bowl as well as the improvements they are making to the terrain parks. Last winter we had one of the snowiest on record and the farmer’s almanac is indicating more of the same this year.” Anthony Crute Head Coach
