^^yeah laying there doing nothing...is relaxing and refreshes you. I also have good dreams when i sleep so that helps, i can do without the nightmares...those are the worst

It is sad - and I wish the owners well.  But they missed the wave by not adding some amazing features back when they changed the software.  And a serious investor might have helped... but all we got was a slicker look and lost content.  No one really cares that behind the curtain were new servers and a better database.  I'm just a student of trends in this area - no agenda.  Again, I wish them all the best.  But in my opinion, the only way to get back on the wave is to beg retailers to make themselves unusually accessible in here, get the instructors to come in, and figure out a way to get 5-10 real professional riders to stop in every week.  But I seriously doubt it's doable.  They still have the "snowbaord.com" link into colonies.com.  But I'd put dinner at a nice restaurant on if all of the other colonies together meet the snowboard community.  Which means - the tie-in of the various obsessions (cats, bmx, dogs) didn't happen.  It was a vision from within to make it work - but there wasn't any external force driving it to happen.  Put another way - sites like facebook, myspace, etc offered something new that kids flocked too like lemings.  They met a incredibly cool "new thing" (need.)  You have to find colonies.com; push yourself to get involved in it; and then perhaps you'll tell some friends about it.  It's just not meeting a need anymore - not like it was 3 years ago BEFORE myspace, etc was out there.  Now you can get the contacts, communication, snowboard-specific stuff in those other sites.

Sorry I haven't been around much...gave myself a little timeout.

I had an incredible trip to AK over spring break. Did some resort stuff at Alyeska, and some hiking too. Definitely on the  Go Back list. This trip was more of an exploratory mission. Next year I know exactly where I'm gonna be playing. For the price of 1 day of heli skiing I can rent sleds for a week and REALLY have some fun.

I think the lack of enthusiasm could be due to most of the country having a crappy snow year (with the exception of CO and AK) and everyone just losing stoke.

Now I just gotta get my boat running so I can wakeboard!

hey Carmen.  Not sure what stats are being played on this version - but it used to be # of people signed in at any one time.  They didn't really use a "sign out" so if you logged in at 9am in the morning to check your email - you might still get counted at 10:30.  And there was a multiplier used at different times of the day.

Psh you can always make new friends on here...it's those who don't invite others in or form the old school mentality that scare the new people.  I've met some awesome new people on here and looking forward to hanging out with them.

For whatever reason, I clicked on the chat thread, which I usually do not. So disclaimer, if anyone ever said hello to me in here I did not see it.

 

Anyway, you are bringing up something that has been on my mind for a while, why is SB not getting the hits it used to. Honestly, I think snowboarding was more popular a few years ago. With the modern advent of ski technology, lots of people are switching back. I am going to give it a shot and see what happens. I always liked snowboarding better on the right conditions, but have been quick to point out that skis are more applicable to wider variety of terrain.

 

There used to be numerous threads about what was better snowboarding or skiing, and it always resulted in a flame war and comments of “oh dude that argument is like so 1995 yo”

 

So last weekend I was having beers with Gary and Shay and saying that I never really figured out why I was on the 30+ forum. I think it was just to see more threads. I posted in about 5 sections, and 30+ was one of them. Then I kind of developed friends that only posted in 30+ and so I came back to see what they said. I have always had a problem with age segregation though.

 

So then, a day or two later, it finally occurred to me the larger segregation, skiing. A large percentage of the people I ride with are skiers. It is nice to talk about snowboarding specific stuff with people sometimes, but as a whole, it really does not matter. So why then post on a snowboard specific site?

 

I think this is the real reason SB has been in decline. I liked V1 better without all of the ratings and shit. But I just turned mine off and was not too concerned with it. But I think the bigger reason is that people cannot interact with their skier friends, skiing is gaining popularity, and this site is in essence perpetuating the skier/snowboarder fight. Even with the Colony of ski (which I just clicked on fir the first time ever) why would I want to post ideas there that would only be answered by skiers?

 

Joe, I’ve read a lot of what you have said over the years and talked to you a handful of times and you seem like a cool dude no doubt; so sorry if you take any offence at that. And as a bonus I will offer my solution to you free of charge. Unless you get really, really rich, and then if you want to throw me some bones, that would be sweet. Here it is: Meld all of the Colonies into one new URL… Change the name to (edited to protect Intellectual Property) Obviously leave the old URL’s, but have everything roll into the new one.

 

Why was SB so much of a hit in around 2004/5? I don’t know, but it was. Maybe as simple as one bar or nightclub getting hot and then dying. Maybe my idea above of skiing gaining momentum snowboarding.

Bought the TX another place.  Be here Monday.  I might have to make a trip to white sands.  The runs are short but the right color.

Yeah take the TX to snow :)  Good choice by the way!

Sandboarding huh? I tried it down in Florence, OR. You really have to use the right wax and you damn near need to rewax every run. Imagine the stickiest snow you have ridden on and multiply it by 2. For me, it was not worth the effort, but then again I have snow somewhere all summer long so I may be just a wee bit spoiled.

MPD, I'm with Ale but my suggestion is the party bus and he could start a nomadic harem.  The cougar mobile is just  scary.
