"A Nevada scientist has published papers in recent years claiming that common air-pollution particles much closer to earth, known as aerosols, are changing the microphysics of clouds. Douglas Lowenthal, an aerosol expert with the Reno-based Desert Research Institute, told the Straight by phone that these pollution-induced changes are causing clouds- which are, in effect, suspended water- to dump up to 50 percent less snow on mountains downwind from the source of the contaminants."
