Red
County
The night before it happened, I had a dream. The dream should’ve stopped me from going to the field, but it didn’t. I still feel that I had something to do with their deaths. The police said I did all that I could’ve done, but still I blame myself cause of the dream I had.
It was about a boy my friends and I picked, His name was Tom. I wasn’t in the dream; it was like I was watching it, like a movie, waiting to see what happens next. He was sitting in his room, on the floor, leaning against his bed. In his left hand he held a piece of paper. It must have been a suicide note cause in the other hand was an empty pill bottle. He started to lean back and forth, slowly closing his eyes. After a couple of seconds he fell to the floor. I could see the note in his hand it read:
“Sorry mom and dad, I just couldn’t take it anymore,
Tell my betrayers, that they’ll get theirs.
Love Tom”
He signed his name too. His mother walked in to see him on the floor. She rushed to his side screaming for her husband. Then I was at the hospital, Tom was lying in the bed. A doctor told his parents that they were going to send him to a rehab center after he got a little better. Tom’s eyes suddenly opened, he was staring at me like he new I was there. A few moments later I woke up.
After getting dressed I went downstairs to my kitchen to get some cereal. My mom was up like always. She told me to go check the mail. Put some leftover Macaroni and cheese that we had for dinner the night before into the microwave, and went outside. I saw the newspaper lying on the porch, I picked it up and headed toward the mailbox. When I opened it, there was only one thing in it, an invitation to a rave that was addressed to me. On the card were the time, place and date of the rave. It was to night at nine o’clock at a place called Red County, about an hours drive from my house.
When I got back inside I took the Macaroni and cheese out of the microwave, and sat down. My mother asked where the mail was, I told her there wasn’t any. I took a bite of my breakfast and opened the newspaper. In the front page of the newspaper there was an article on the bottom left side that read:
“Rehab Teen Missing”
There was a picture of Tom. I stared at the picture, thinking about the dream I had. The ringing of my cell phone woke me from my daze. It was Nick, he was at his house with his girlfriend Amy. He said that him, Monica, Jason, and Amy got an invitation to a rave in the mail. I told him I did too. We made plans to meet at my house, Jason will pick up his girlfriend Monica and come over. Nick and Amy will do the same. I didn’t have a girlfriend at the time so I always felt like the fifth wheel.
Everyone got to my house around seven thirty. We took Jason’s car it was his moms mini-van. We left, on the way we listened to music mostly Rap cause that’s what Jason liked. There was nothing but wheat fields and an old gas station a couple of miles a way from where the party was.
Once we got there, Jason followed the path that someone made going into the cornfield. The moon was full and bright, so it wasn’t that dark. When the path came to an end we got out of the van. We heard nothing but silence. We figured that we had to go more into the field to find the rave. I didn’t think anything about there being no other cars where we parked, but now I know why. We looked around for what seemed to be a good ten minutes. We got to what I think was a crop circle. No one was to be found. Out of the side of the circle about ten feet away, steps a figure in black clothing. The person was wearing a hooded jacket. With one hand he takes off the hood, it was Tom. With the other hand he pulls out a gun, I could see that there was a hunters knife strapped to his belt. He points it towards us. At that time I new why we were there, he wanted to make us pay, pay for all the teasing we did to him. He pulled the trigger, all I hear was a big bang, then the scream of Amy. Monica is lying on the floor with a hole in her eye. Jason screams at him calling him a son of a bitch. We run back into the field, towards the van. Running in the maze of the long corn stacks, somehow Nick, Amy and I got separated with Jason. It took us about five minutes to find the van, but when we got there, Jason was already in. It looked like the car wouldn’t start cause Jason was messing with the steering wheel. I smelt a strong sent then I realized what it was when I seen Tom standing behind the car. It was gasoline; the gas tank to the van was open, as we see Tom pull out a lighter. Tom lighted the lighter while the three of us scram to Jason. He looks at us as the light fell from Tom’s fingertips. The van bursts into flames. I looked in horror as I saw the flame go into the opened gas tank. I scram “Run!” We ran into the cornfield right before the van explodes with Jason inside.
The whole time we were running, Amy was crying, there was tears in Nick’s eyes, mine too. While trying to find a way out, gunshots were fired, Nick must have tripped cause Amy and I lost him in the noise. I later found out that Tom put a knife to his chest. After that Amy and I got to the road, we could see the gas station we passed about a block away. We must have ran two or three miles, cause that’s how far we drove after passing it on the way over here. We both ran not stopping or slowing down.
When we got to the gas station, just in time, the gas station attendant was just locking up. I looked back about three blocks away I could see the headlights of car, it was Toms. We told him to hurry and unlock the door. By the time he did the car was already pulling up in the parking lot. Amy and I ran inside, the clerk came in and closed the door. The door was made from glass with bars on to stop robbers from getting in. Tom steps out of his car just in time to shot the clerk, shattering the glass door. Amy scrammed as Tom walked up to the door. He dropped his gun, there were no more bullets in it, cause the gun was cocked back. He pulled out the hunting knife, he must have cleaned it off after killing Nick. I yell to Amy to follow me, we ran to the casher counter, I was looking for a gun that most clerks hide in case of burglary’s. I see the gun, right as tom thrust’s the knife in Amy’s skull. I grab the gun from under the counter while Tom pulled the knife out of her head. I pointed the gun at Tom’s face. I yelled to him to drop the knife. He held up his hand and dropped the knife to the floor. Tears falling from my face I asked him why he did this to us. He told me he did this to us because that is what we did to him mentally, we killed him, he said that then jumped toward me. I shot him in the head and called the police.
