if they are new they should not be doing what they are doing. the 20,000 is the water proof rating of the waterhead so it SHOULD  repel 20,000mm of water in a 24 hour period. siting down even with body heat isn't going to melt over 20,000 mm of water. Welcome to burton products. if you want a pant that no matter how long you sit in the snow your only going to get a cold butt no a wet one then go for gore-tex or better yet gore-tex xcr, they are pricey but worth it for being dry.
