I don`t know much about the snowboarding there, but the Chinese Olympic halfpipe girls were not bad. Especially for a country that has only a few hills, and not much snowboarding (compared to Japan, Europe, and North America). As for China, i have never been there, but will visit Taiwan for a month in April. I have taught some Chinese kids English, and they were cool, like kids from anywhere. I don`t like the Chinese government`s views on many things, but i am American by birth, and i don`t like the American government either. I am interested in China, and would like to know more. I live in Japan right now. Is snowboarding becoming popular in China? Where can you snowboard there?

There was a great article a half-year back in Frequency about some riders who went to China. The snowboard scene there is growing, but it's still virtually non-existent and only available to the upper-class. Just being on a ski hill with ski gear is more of a social statement that you actually have the wealth to be there, regardless of whether you can actually ski or not. And speaking of the hills, they're hardly even that. Supersmall and very flat, and usually very very far from the cities. I'm sure China's Olympic athletes will progress, as long as they keep taking gymnasts, putting them on boards and sending them to Shikoku to train for weeks on end in Japan's indoor halfpipes there (which I read in Japanese Transworld Snow last year). However, the progress of these athletes will hardly at all be a reflection of snowboarding catching on with the Chinese population.

i completely agree with you snowboarding in china is more of an status symbol rather than a popular sport. Last year when i went back to my home city of Tianjin i saw this hill which was the size of the bunny hill at my local hill( i live in calgary for 6 years now). But now i heard some of the hills around beijing are having price wars, i heard the prices has gone down alot. Maybe the sport is slowly progessing, but you'll need be wealth to be able to get into the sport.

from what i understand, it's still vastly underdeveloped compared to the rest of the world. the good news is that it also has a large untapped potential. i think one advantage it'll have within the near future is that china has roughly 3 indoor ski parks, whereas the US has none. i'll be in beijing in march for the ispo china to find out more.
