Currently riding '06 390s, but looking to swap them out for the newer model.  I'm an all-mountain rider and starting to do more back country venturing.

I have only tried them out in the store but to me they have a stiffer highback and stiffer ankle strap. I really like my Rome bindings and recommend them especially if you are a freeriding

(other bindings I have ridden are 08 Rome 390, 07 Burton C60, 08 Burton Cartel, 08 Burton EST, 05,07,08 Burton P1, Bent Metal Burnt Resin 04, Bent Metal Missionary 08, 04 Salomon SPX6, 05 Ride Spi, 02 Salomon SP4, and a bunch others I can't remember).

Go email this guy at http://www.angrysnowboarder.com. He has both and prefers the Targa for hard-riding (he mentions it tangentially in this review http://www.angrysnowboarder.com/?p=4289 where he says when riding a freeride board, the 390's where performing enough [for freeriding] and he should have put on his Targas).

I have '08 390's and Targas, the 390's feel a little bit more comfortable but the Targas are definitely stiffer and more responsive.  I keep the 390's on my park board and the Targas on my powder/freeride board.  For all-mountain and back country I would go with the Targas.

For park, 390s for sure.  However, if you're looking to do more backcountry, Targas definitely.  I even take my Targas into the park, so they're very versatile.

I've had both the 08 and 09 models of targas and 390s. 

you should definitely upgrade from those 06, but don't go past 08 in either one because the quality dived in 09 and still hasn't recovered.  I got rid of all my 09s and still ride my 08s.
