Not worth it for opening day....most resorts on the north shore need mother nature to cover, so you may as well wait for season to begin in earnest.  If you want machine-made, some in WI open earlier than around the Twin-Cities metro, but usually Welch or Wild open first up here or sometimes even Buck Hill.

Then I suggest you kill yourself, because your gona have to wait.  If you can't wait, that is the only option.  Good bye.

If you can't wait, go buy a Freebord and find some hills nearby to shred.  One of the few purchases I made this summer and I have not regretted it at all.  Closest thing to snowboarding, plus limited/no travel required.  Here's the link:

No need to kill yourself THIS close to season......  Grab your buddy's pick up, a few shovels & head to the closest ice rink.....

Never ridden a freebord before, but long boarding can definitly be fun to work on those turns...

Is that the silly thing the urban riders use instead of a collapsable ramp?  If so, I've heard of it, but I have no use for it as I am not an urban rider/jibber/park-rat.

You are not forced to...you choose the easy route.  I've been in WI/MN for the past 19 seasons.  I have yet to hit a single urban "session".  I also avoid the parks at resorts around here, not just because of the crowd, but because of the shitty snow and shittier landings.  You can find all kinds of fun if you are willing to hike it, or if you change your riding style.  That and take trips out west :)

I found me a new place to hike this summer.  I'm pretty stoked over it.  I can even to ledge drops and shit there.  I'm so ready for it.

Eau Claire, WI originally.  I am in the Twin Cities now...so about 2 hours west.

We used to spend time in the summer/fall scouting places to hike.  We would clear paths through the woods even to make riding easier and better when we got some crappy snow.  Some of them were a bitch to get to, so we also built a lean-to with some dry wood in case we needed a place to warm up at or if someone got injured.  Yes, we have been breathing and eating snowboarding for years :)

OK, I understand your current plight.  You are listed as 22 on your profile, so maybe a student or a fresh grad with a new job?  Either way, you don't sound like you are willing to relocate (like me...for the time being).  So until you decide to make the leap to real mountains, learn to enjoy what you have around you!  I have a 45 minute drive to Afton Alps from home, but only about 15 minutes from my work, so it could be worse.

Start planning and budgeting for snow vacations only!  Seriously, about 50% of my yearly discretionary budget gets blown on snowboarding (equiptment, passes, vacations, etc).  Eventually you will either burn out, or you will get serious like some of us and make plans to move to the mountains.

I'm waiting for a girl friend to graduate.  Reason being, she wants to move to real mountains with me.  Got about 1.5 years, so I can save bank for a place when I or we move.  We may be goin to New York for her to go to college to play Volleyball first.  Though she has gotten some letters from Colleges in Washington as well.  :)  She'd rather go there.
