So this is about the time of the year that i make my return to the forums...I start rambling on about the first few storms of the year, usually getting way to excited because the storms just don't seem to deliver.

The storm that's on it's way right now looks to have more than enough precipitation to get things going, but depends entirely on where the snow level falls. It is a rather warm system, snow levels look to fluctuate between 7k-8k feet...

But i have a feeling the higher mountains such as kirkwood (base @ 7,800)  *might*  get enough to have something going on soon....I know Boreal already has a lift going on man made snow, i think this storm may dump a lot of rain on or at least very slushy stuff on the lower 1/2 of the mountain...

I still remember the winter of 04/05, being on the mountain almost 2 weeks before Halloween. Riding a couple feet of pow...

yep, that was the most epic year we have had. I always talk about that season. It started for me October 20th, I was hiking the mountain with a 6 foot powder base. It snowed three or four days a week every week, and my season finally ended on July 4th at Mammoth. That was a good year.

All we are getting in Tahoe is rain. If it's El Nino, you better get used to the rain. Its still early for California though. Im not too worried.

Heh,

It's been bi polar like that around here too.  Not that warm in the mountains, but man we had that deep freeze.  In Denver there are people cruising around in shorts now.  More snow is on the way.  Just wish the snow pack in the back country around here wasn't so freakin' sketchy right now.

I don't know about it.

Our local snowpack was, I'm assuming, screwed by the sub-zero temps as well. I'm hoping this warming trend we're in right now will 'settle' it all out and there won't be a sketchy layer that persists all winter. Here's to hoping!

Man, we have the bottom layer of depth hoar, right to the ground.  It is not going away until the spring thaw.  In fact, this may be one of the worst years snow pack stability wise that we've had in a decade.  I haven't been out in a few weeks, wrapping up some home projects, but from what I am seeing it doesn't look good.  We've had a ton of close calls, and I think the first avy related death is just a week or two off, unfortunately.
