Alright so.. I hate my job. I have for a while, but after re-doing the same report for about the billionth time since December, I'm getting to the end of my rope. So I'm wondering if anyone can suggest somewhere that I can look for jobs that are related to something I like (snowboarding.. haha). I look on malakye every day, but since that's mostly US and they just have "Canada" (as opposed to the state-by-state breakdown for the US), I generally see jobs in AB, BC and QC and rarely anything in Ontario.

So is there anywhere else I can look? I've looked on all the company's sites I can think of, and the distributors that I know of, but haven't found anything yet. So if anyone can point me in the direction of a job-search site that's "action sports" or even better snowboard specific that has a decent number of Canadian/Ontario listings (monster and workopolis aren't where I expect to find these kinds of postings, and I've tried looking anyway). Or even a list of Canadian distributors since I'm sure there are a bunch I don't know.

Or, you know, if anyone knows anyone that's looking for an employee.. haha.

Thanks a bunch - any help will be helping me save my sanity!

If you're looking for jobs out east in canada it'll most likely be a bit harder. AB we have a ton of jobs... I don't know specifically what your looking for but I know if you're wanting to work on a mountain, if you have the proper training you can pretty much walk in and get hired as an instructor. Again don't know if that's the kind of job you're looking for but I know out west here there are plenty of job opportunities.

The instructor idea's on the table, but I need full time because of a mortgage.. and a love for spending money on stuff I don't need.. haha.

And yeah, unfortunately I'm stuck in Ontario. We were talking about moving west for a while but I've come to accept that it's just not going to happen in the near future.. which is lame, but true.

I'm looking for anything full time that's anything to do with snowboarding. I've interviewed for office admin jobs at places like SBC and stuff like that - it doesn't have to be a job where I actually snowboard, but at least somehow related to it. I've applied for rep jobs too, but those are impossible to get if you're not really well connected and/or experienced.. I have experience on the buying side, but not sales, so even though it translates, it's never enough. Plus, like I said, I don't seem to be able to come across any listings for the jobs most of the time anyway..

try to actually talk to some shops... any that you buy from where you are buddy buddy with any managers or such?  not like many want to just hire someone as a purchaser or anything, but never hurts asking... maybe there will be something different opening up.

all companies, be they snowboarding or accounting have people employed that don't do anything related to the actual product... what about the people in charge of reading the mail and sending out stickers to all those kids?.. what about customer service where they take complaints/returns and such?  i noticed my ride parts came from etiboke when i got them shipped to me... ride/k2 must have a warehouse there.

keep looking!  i'm sure if you look hard enough, you'll find something... i just hope its good.

Yeah! Find me a job!

K2/ride/whatever else is owned by K2sports doesn't have any listings in the area right now.. I checked. The only thing they have listed is "Design Engineer, Ski Poles and Winter Helmets".. which I'm not qualified for.. and... it's skiing. haha.

I'll keep looking, I was just wondering if there was a site like Malakye that is Canadian specific.. or at least breaks it down further than just "Canada"

Maybe I should just start that as a business instead.. haha

Fair warning right now is not the time to look at jobs with snowboard related companies or magazines.  The next 8 to 15 months you will see companies downsizing or going under.  Be happy you have a job.

Quiksilver is going to topple their stock got dropped to junk bond status.  Just sit back and wait and watch you'll see companies dropping like flies.

I'm not expecting to get hired tomorrow or anything. And I know I'm lucky to have a job - we had a huge amount of layoffs.. GM is one of my company's biggest clients.. so yeah. We got hit. I'm not planning on just quitting my job without having another first or anything. But a job that doesn't interest me combined with a pay freeze and little acknowledgement for my work is getting old. I'd rather this than be on the streets, but if I manage to find something that I'd be happier in, then why not.

I just want some help as to where I can look.. I also like skateboarding... culture. I can't skate for shit. But I did love putting them together and fixing them when I worked at a shop. (Which I'd do again in a second if I didn't need to worry about the mortgage..) And I was pretty good with my PK. So there's the summer season for you haha. I'm so versatile.. haha. But yeah.. just any leads on an action sports job database so I can at least dream of getting out of my job.. that will help me to get through the days.. only 60 some odd years until retirement.. hopefully.

thats crazy about quiksilver....

i was talking with a local store owner around here with a bunch of shops.. he was out in australia talking with some reps and owners out there (he goes out to check trends and tries to bring em over this way) and he was saying the stores are all hurting huge... they went big when all these factory stores went up and now none are making enough to pay mortgages...

kendra and i are doing our part to help the industry!  between us, we've bought 3 boards for ourselves and 2 as gifts/for other people all in the last couple months.  i'm poor now though.

Where's my board-gift? It's my birthday next week..

Yeah I remember when a Billabong store opened in Yorkdale.. which is apparently owned by West49 (the store.. not the mall).. or at least operated by them. And I thought that was strange since the West49 location was not doing well from what I heard (I worked at another West49 location at the time).. just creating competition for themselves by doing that - West carries all the brands in the Billabong store, but Billabong doens't carry all the stuff that West does. I mean sure, they can go deeper into the product lines, but seems strange to do it as neighbours.. especailly in one of the most expensive malls in Toronto, and probably Canada too..

That being said, it's years later and both are still there, so what do I know. Apparently nothing.

honestly, i say go for your instructors, instruct a couple nights a week, and stay at the boring job. it'll stop you from going batshit crazy, but you'll still have the nice steady paycheck. joining the patrol did that for me... heh plus i got two job offers from fellow patrollers out of it! so you never know what might happen.

you can always check the CASI site too, you never know what could come up.

I'm in the same boat as you Alison!!  I feel eternally bored of my job.  What Kendra said is totally true.  Instructing 2 nights and 1 weekend day a week really fulfilled that gap.  I had something to look forward to almost every day and that really helped me get through it.

I would still prefer to find something better suited for me but in the meantime... I'll keep at this.  Instructing out west calls my name but I, like you, enjoy having luxuries in my life and the life of an instructor is far from luxurious...

its not whaqt you know, its who you know, you need to start smoozing! all the people i know in the action sports industry are there because they got to know people in the industry. Thats not to say they are smart people and good at what they do, but they got an in that way.

That being said, ive seen west 49 jobs on monster a lot, and ive seen burton jobs on krop.

krop.com is geared towards creative jobs i guess, so maybe not for everyone. The burton job I saw was a remote designer job.
and when I say West 49, I'm thinking more about working for head office type thing, not in a shop.
but yeah, I still say network yourself.

Yeah I know head office. I know a dude that works there actually. I tried to intern there back in the day when I worked at the Square One West and they gave me the runaround. Who doesn't want free labour?

But yeah.. Matt knows some dude that's a Nomis rep that said he'd give my card to his friend at salomon that was looking for a girl rep or something. But I never got a call. The problem is that I don't know people to network because I don't work in the industry. But yeah. I'm just going to go for my CASI this winter and instruct.

HEY LADY! Looks like your from the Toronto area. Rep'ing for a snowboard company sound like a great job, but a lot of work. If I could make one suggestion it would be try your hardest to get your foot in the door at a well known board shop. Go down to board sports and get a job. There's a dude there by the name of Gander. He's a super nice fella. From there you will meet reps from all the companies they deal with. Maybe you can try your hand at buying. You'll soon become friends with them, party with them, and eventually you will maybe be able to snag one of their jobs. Keep yourself connected with the industry and you will find something that interests you.
