Hell must have frozen over....

SALT LAKE CITY — Getting into a bar in Utah is about to become a lot easier.

Gov. Jon Huntsman and state House and Senate leaders agreed Monday to eliminate the state's much-criticized private club system, which requires someone to fill out an application and pay a fee for the right to enter a bar unless he or she is the guest of a member.

Wow I didn't even know that about Utah. I'd be embarrassed to live there. Did you know that people in the state of Utah look at more internet porn than any other state? Sounds like a bunch of repressed people to me.

Besides for the job/financial purposes I can't imagine why someone would want to move there.

Yes, we're all a bunch of horny lowlifes with some of the worst standards of living in the US. Don't ever move here. It's awful.

It's like Colorado, with the added bonus of Mormonism!
Dirty, but invigorating.
With a pinch of depression, but a heaping spoonful of arrogance.

I don't know about the porn part, though the most religious areas seem to look at the most porn.

Meth seems to be the big problem in Ooootah.  Number one meth using state I believe.  Colorado ain't far behind.

Anyway, the snow and terrain is killer out there, and going for a visit is about to get a little nicer.  About time...

Well according the latest info I can find you are right.

http://www.oas.samhsa.gov/2k6/statemeth/stateMeth.htm

This is only through 2005.

A lot can change in the 3 full years since then.  That study puts Colorado above Utah in Meth use.  What I was recently hearing is Utah is now towards the top of the list, but at the moment I am not finding anything to back it up.

The two biggest reasons for meth problems in az? Mexico is next door and there are plenty of remote spots in the state for the chefs to do the cooking.

In the past month I have seen SLC as the #1 Healthiest city in the US on one list and Utah at the #1 happiest state in the US on another.  I lived there for a winter and would move back in a heartbeat.  I mean, I like Tahoe better for the time being, but it's not very realistic to have a career and buy a home here.  When the time comes to grow up, I'd be more than happy to settle in SLC.

Utah sucks, don't come here.

I don't want to see you on the terrain thats 30 minutes from my backyard, while I hold down a real career that affords me a mortgage, brand new car, and new gear every year, all while boarding 30-40 days a year.

Please, just board in Cali until you are 30, grow up, raise your family in AZ or Midwest and take a "board" vacation 1 time a year.

Just sayin, our liquor law suck, so don't come here.

(and no I'm not mormon)

Ha!  That's pretty funny.  Of course new restaurants won't be able to have a bar and will have to prepare the drinks in a backroom.  All because they don't want "Children to be enticed to drink alcohol".  Ummm, ok, I am glad they pinpointed where the problem of under age drinking originates.  I'm sure because of their laws no kids under the age of 21 drink.  Yeah, right.  That just proves that politicians are idiots.  Then again. look at the state this country is in and I think we all already knew that...

read an article a while back how you can't buy fruit alcohol drinks in grocery stores in utah anymore cause i guess they are concerned that someone may buy them thinking its just juice. As if them asking for ID when they ring you up and the references to alcohol on the containers aren't obvious enough to inform you that your buying an alcoholic drink.

Sounds like typical Utah religious based politics to me Tzo.  Creating a problem where one doesn't exist. Then again, that just sounds like politics in general...

You can't buy any alcohol in grocery stores/gas stations in North Dakota or Minnesota and I'm pretty sure those states have huge alcoholism issues. (you can buy 3.2 beer at gas stations).

Actually, North Dakota is the #1 binge drinking state - so yeah, laws limiting access to it don't really curb actual behaviors.

Regarding Utah - I would up and move there in a heartbeat (once I figure out what I'm going to be when I grow up). The towns are low(ish) crime, clean...and believe it or not - most Mo's are pretty nice people if you take a little time to get to know them and they realize that you will not be joining their church. I'd probably target Ogden over SLC though...a lot smaller and cheaper real estate.

Ogden area resorts are less crowded too.  It's definitely the red headed step child of the Salt Lake area, but they have some good shops, good eats, and easy access.  Nothing wrong with it at all.  Plus it's easier to find a hooker there...
