Obviously Colorado has longer runs,  but can I expect the blacks in Colorado to be about as steep as Michigans ?

Just as steep if not steeper. A lot of them are not groomed, so be sure you can ride on choppy mogul-like surface. And yes, they are longer. You'll find yourself stopping to take a breather after some of the tougher runs before you even get to the lift.

Pretty much every resort I have been to in the mid-west has a nice disclaimer, something to the effect of: "Trail ratings are indicative of relative difficulty, not actual".  Basically, our blacks are based upon the steepness compared to the rest of the shitty hill.  99% of the black diamonds in the mid-west would be blue squares at a real mountain.

nah man, actually Michigan is about as steep as you can find in the states. Well it's at least as steep as you need to go considering your question.

CO runs as steep as MI runs?  Go to Beaver Creek and try the Golden Eagle run, let me know how that compares to your black diamonds in MI, that's if you don't shit your panties first.

in theory a run can only be so steep before its too steep to ride...the kid asked a simple question, clearly hasnt been to CO or anywhere else..that doesnt mean you have to try to make him feel like an idiot...to the original poster: have fun out there! after all thats what its all about isnt it? not how steep of a run you think you can ride...

He should try the Big Couloir at Big Sky.....or maybe Corbet's Couloir at J-Hole.  Those would fill his pants.....hell, I nearly filled mine on the tram ride up at Big Sky when I saw a dude tele down the Big Couloir.  MAD jump turns!

Forrest, I went up there with Erik...  bad timing though cuz it was one huge wall of ice, but we made it out alive :)  I'd love to do it again when it's not a flipping ice rink though...

Midwest being as flat as it is, I don't understand how anyone could think it's steeper than Colorado MOUNTAINS...  most people come out here (CO) thinking they're not that great of riders and won't be able to find mellow runs out here... (though this is not true, it's definitely more likely than the original statement in this thread).

though I've never been "fearless" enough to conquer the "mountains" in the mid-west, I would have to totally disagree with your ignorant statement that MI is about as steep as you'll find in the states. I seriously doubt you have anything over 40 degrees, if that, let alone 50-60 degrees, like we have in bounds here in AK.

There are a few pretty damn steep runs in upper MI (haven't been to mainland MI) Some double blacks. I've also been out west in the actual mountains. They are just as steep just not as long or powdery.
i used to snowboard, still do, but used to too

My favortie run at boyne in michigan used to be one named after big C.(same owners)... they would purposley run the snow guns to build a huge cornice that you would have to air of of to enter. it was more like a big excavated bowl. so, vertical at the top, gradually transitoning, and about 100 feet deep.... eventually it was graded and flattened to make way for the terrain park.

I can think of a few runs around the midwest that had a realatively steep pitch,, maybe even up to 40 degrees, but never sustained for more then 100-200 feet...

and it is all relative... cause if we start coutning flat boat.. well, then michigan is steeper.

I was kidding. There isn't anything like that in Michigan.

Thought I would give the OG poster a nice picture to look at instead of a hard time.

well i guess the world extreme skiing championships will eventually be moved from alyeska to gnarly michigan. seriously kid, maybe up to 40 degrees? oh no, try 60 degrees, and that's just at the resort.

Maybe you should just not come in the midwest forums, you dont appear to ride here and have nothing good to say about the hills, what is your purpose?

I can actually answer this thread truthfully, because I infact live in rado. Vails double blacks are more intense than 99.9% of the midwest's black diamonds. Sure, there are some blacks here that aren't as gnarly as you may imagine, but they are still pretty difficult, because of moguls or trees.  Try Vail. Those are intense.
Going to Colorado, to unload my head.

Is that gonna be on teh X-games? MIchigan on teh x-games??!!??

I like that you called me kid, but chill bro, I was only answering a question. I am aware of what Alaska has and doesn't have. I'd be stoked if I lived up there too... if only there was more daylight hour in the winter, and not such a sausage state.

daisy... bohemia doesn't really even have anything like that... bohemia is mostly lower angle nicely spaced trees. Alot like steamboats tree runs, but more mixed wood instead of being predominatly aspens. A few rocks, small cliffs, and other fun drainage features, but nothing that warrants being double black, let alone the infamous tripple blacks.
