bah our winter storm has turned into rain down here in the south.

and alison, in BC you can only have one passenger when you have your novice licence (equivalent of G2 here)... and i don't think there's an age cap. they reason it out by saying that the more passengers you have, the more potential for distraction, which means the less focused you are on the road.

or something like that.

Yeah here with your G1 you can only have an experienced driver (5+ years with their G or something), but what the proposed bill or whatever it is says is that ANYONE under 21 can't have more than one non-family member in the car with them. Even if they have their full G license. Non-family member. As if having siblings in the car is any less distracting than friends. Plus how can you prove they're not related - half brothers, step sisters.. they don't all have the same last names.

well, what they do to prove you aren't related is make you have a baby with the other passengers... then they see if the baby comes out funny.

They dropped that now.

Still no word on whether they dropped the 'if you are caught speeding and are under 21 it's an automatic license suspension for 30days upon first offense, 60 second, and 90 third, regardless of license type (g1,g2,g)' thing. They may have dropped it a while back, but I never heard anything.

Yeah I actually have no idea about any of it.. I just heard about it for the first time like a week ago from Matt. That's what I get for watching BT in the morning and never right on the hour so I never get any real news.. but I mean Jennifer's live eyes are very informative. Yeah.. I should get a new morning show.

Ugh BT.. My mum loves that show and I'm always up before her, so I gotta sit through it all the time while I make my breakfast. They don't tell you anything important at all, I don't give a shit about some chef or how to apply makeup, give me mah news!

I only found out about it because a facebook group protesting it added me.
Anyways, looking at stuff, I got it wrong, for the speeding, it only applies to G1 and G2, however the first instance is 30 days, second is 90, and third means you gotta go back to G1, take all the tests, and wait the 8 or so months.

Also, I forgot the zero tolerance for alcohol under 21. G1, g2, and G, if you are caught with the slightest hint of alcohol in your blood, your license is pulled. No word for how long. How fucking stupid is that considering our legal drinking age is 19? You have a few drinks one night and you wake up the next to drive home, completely sober, but you get pinged for still having it in your blood even though you are fully capable.

I swear, I will drive my ass out to where mcguinty is and bang down the door if this has a shot in hell of passing.

I actually agree with the zero tolerance alcohol rule. The problem is that they can't start allowing for special circumstances otherwise smart people will figure out how to exploit the system. I know far too many people who have 1-2 or 3 pints then drive home when they really shouldn't. That's bad news.

As for the speeding rule. Just be thankful this isn't Finland where you have your license taken away if you are caught going 20 km/h or more faster than the speed limit.

Yeah I agree with the alcohol one too - just remember, alcohol affects different people differently. You know how all people have different "tolerances", and it's not just the size/weight thing. Example, I haven't had a drink in like 5+ years, so I'm pretty sure if I had one drink now, even though I wouldn't be over the limit, I'd still "feel" it.. ya know? So 0.5% or whatever it is (or is it 0.0something%?) can be fine for someone and drunk for another person.

I just don't see what difference being over 21 makes. I know people in their 40's and 50's drive all the time after having more than they should - making the limit 0% takes the guess work out of it. If you've had a sip, you can't drive.. none of this "well I had 4 but that was this long ago and I had some bread so I SHOULD be okay" crap.

Let's make all cars come with big crazy rubber bumpers and install speed limiters.

That would be fun

at this point i'd sell any car... even my pacer.

so yeah.  car stuff.  zero alcohol content would be simpler... but just too hard to police without having random full on breathalyzers at the ride programs.  not only a pain and time consuming, but more expensive for the police to enforce.  i like to have my beer if i'm out with the guys.  if i'm driving i won't have more than two...

Thing is we don't have breathalyzers. It's not like 'Oh, let me just check my breath..  0, good, now I can drive', you are pretty much fucked and going on guesswork if you had anything to drink in the past 12 hours. How about the chocolates with a small portion of snaps in it? Or a glass of wine at dinner? Or pasta with a bit of wine mixed in? No way in hell does that impair 90% of people, why should you have your licensed pulled because of it?

I understand the reasoning behind it, alcohol has a huge impact on car accidents and is often involved in them. However there has to be a more sensible way. I'd be bitter if the alcohol was limited to people under 19, but it would make sense as that's the legal drinking age. And if 0 alcohol was thrown across the board, there would be an uproar. The only way in hell this could pass is because older folk like to believe it's only young people that are careless. It wouldn't fly if it applied to their generation, and that's a slap to the face for us as we are a minority and the number of people driving/voting that is over 21 pathetically outweighs the 18,19,20, and 21 year olds.

Actually if you blow over at a traffic stop (boy that sounds dirty), you're not immediately assumed to be guilty. Those are just field kits. You have to then go down to the station and have a proper breathalizer test done by a certified technician for any of that to hold up as evidence. The reality is that if you gargle with Scope just before taking a field breathalizer, you'll probably fail it.

Yeah.. it would never fly. And I mean I'm not saying that it ever would. I just think it's stupid to apply it to only 21 and under, especially since it's a completely arbitrary age - legal drinking age in the US? What does that have to do with anything? And like I said before, I know a lot of people over 50 who drink and drive that are over the limit on a regular basis.

In all honesty, I think it should be more of a matter of upping the penalties rather than lowering the limit - a guy killed THREE people (on three occasions) before he had his license taken away forever. That's completely ridiculous. And you get caught driving completely wasted but just happened to not have killed a family yet, all you get is a 24 hour suspension. That's it. Just a little slap on the wrist "oh I'm really sorry to do this, but you're going to have to take the bus tomorrow.. sorry". So yeah.. I'm more concerned about how they punish drinking and driving as a deterrent than about them lowering the limit to 0.00%. I mean if you knew that if you get caught you're going to have to take the bus for a month instead of just a day, maybe you'll just pay the $30 to take a cab home.

My main beef is that people get their cars impounded for racing. Yes, racing kills people, but so does drinking & driving. So why does one result in having your car taken away while the other just inconveniences you for a day?

really?... i knew about the false positives on drug tests due to poppy seeds.... but the banana thing is news to me.

i'm 100% with ya ali... its not until a repeat offender kills multiple people that it becomes serious.  if a guy/girl is guilty of repeatedly driving hammered.. like, i mean, to the point of hitting someone or something, why the hell are they ever allowed behind the wheel?  it seems like it happens all the time.  basically... beef up penalties.  keep ages and all that crap the same.

apparently the liquor control officer in whistler got a DYI this week.......  well that's the rumour.   If it's true, i think there will be a job opening soon!

i agree with mikey, age isn't really the factor, it's that people are more willing to take risks with drinking and driving than they are with other things.  it's stupid really.
