Being in such a bright mood lately, I remembered this old forum and figured I'd see what was going on in here. Not much, apparently. :o)

I'd like to say I'm surprised that the usual players on this site are still backing conservatives/republicans after they almost doubled our national debt, tanked our economy, redistributed wealth to the wealthy, and divided our country to a whole new level. But hey, I guess as long as those dirty homosexuals can't marry, right?

In any case, I hope everyone here is as excited as I am. A country that has seemed inconsolable to itself has elected a candidate that possesses true leadership qualities and potential, regardless of his race and even his name. The majority of the country put aside the superficial and decided on their next leader through rational discourse. Now, hopefully, the use of reason can return to Washington, and politicians can return to their role of Public Servant over Self-Servant.

But I will say one thing that has come up a lot in discussions since 11/4: Obama was also elected because he has reminded us that we are the ones that bring change. The last 8 years we have seen an administration that has blocked out the public. With Obama, we are reminded through him that the true administration of this land never changes: the American people. We need to be responsible in our actions, and consider the impact they have on us, our neighbors, and even those who we disagree with. And most of all, we need to demand that our government be accountable to us.

Freedom, for everyone, not just those we agree with.
Responsibility, accountability for your actions.
Rationality, a necessity for civil discourse.

later guys. If any of you old timers see this (I've only seen a post from Swin) hope you guys are doing well. Take care!

Blaming the whole economy on Republicans is pretty ignorant. Take a look at voting records please, plenty of democrats agreed on the bailout bill.

Now with that said, I am not pro Republican, I don't know why everyone is so wrapped up in two crappy parties.

Thats like asking which shit sandwich tastes better. Answer is, neither!

blaming the economic crisis on republicans is not so unfair.

not when considering the wars waged by republicans, which then sees the committment of vast swathes of public funds for ultimately, those things that go bang and simply work to fuck up a foreign country.

i mean such monies could have been re-invested domestically to benefit your country, as opposed to being given to foreign entities or US based weapons makers and thus to a very select minority of your populace.

just saying, you've been paying thru the nose for a endless conflict, and that can cost a pretty penny.  this is just one example of financial misappropriation under your recent leaders, who are of a republican bias.

I would say that republican economics of the last 8 years IS the EXACT reason we're in the mess we're in and why it didn't get thwarted before hand. The idea that one can borrow money beyond their means caught up to us. Regulations were stripped, loopholes were not closed, and borrowing got out of hand. Not to mention the oil price hike that was due to a declining dollar, deregulating the trading of oil, and speculation. The failing dollar is due to the deficit, which is due to the billions spent on a poorly managed war. De-regulated trading allow speculation to run wild causing the price to skyrocket, causing inflation to skyrocket, causing instability in retail sales and cut backs in spending within the middle class of America.

To say you can't blame the republicans is ridiculous. The economy was in a pile of shit before this stupid ass "bailout". And congress was only democratic for 2 years, and in those two years, they just got log jammed by the republicans and the President. Besides, the economy was heading this way before 2 years ago. And in fact, I don't remember consumer confidence going all that strong even during the strongest economic times of GW.

It is time to change our way of thinking. Living by credit will only get us back in this spot again. Regulations need to be put in place. Greed needs to be taken out of the equation, and the only way to do that is to slap down some regulations... on the banks, investment houses AND the people. If you make 30 grand a year, don't buy that 300,000 dollar house with an ARM loan! You hate to play the blame game, but you have to find out what went wrong and when in order to fix and not do again. I myself will quit borrowing money and just start takin it without intent of paying back!

Hey Gez, Swin. Seeing you two here makes me consider coming back....well, until I read some of the other posts. ;o)

Just one comment: the bailout is merely a bad decision that was made long after a string of bad decisions were made by the republican party in power. It's the fact that we needed to even consider a bailout that should really scare us. What is the excuse for doubling the debt while the rich twisted the system to their advantage? And remember when Bush and the republicans stripped bankruptcy rights from individuals, only to provide unprecedented protection for rich profiteers? Yeah, those are the actions we should be discussing.

Typically I suggest focusing on decisions made by individual lawmakers as opposed to the party they belong to. However, in the case of the republican party, they adhere to a strict ideological code that consistently damages the country when they hold power, so I find it makes complete sense to assign blame to them as a group based on their collective actions.

We definitely need a multi-party system, but that would require a change to the voting system due to the way our country is polarized. A multi-tiered voting structure, allowing voters to make multiple selections in order of preference, would allow additional parties a chance to be elected and reduce the need to select from the lesser of two evils. (Although I have to say it is a great feeling to have a great president in office for once. There are times the voting systems works. It's just sad it takes a disaster created by a party in order for it to happen.)

Ok, I guess that was more than 1 comment. ;o)

I've been paying attention to Obama since before 2002. I might even have a post on here about him around that time since I think that was when I was active on the boards (too bad the search function is built very well, otherwise I'd try to pull it up). Not everyone confines themselves to the most popular news stories and soundbites. That doesn't mean I know how his presidency is going to go, but at the very least I know this is a man who actually cares about the citizens he serves, as opposed to the last monkey who outright stated he didn't listen to the people (e.g., didn't pay attention to polls and didn't read the news). And the fact that he stated all  of his campaign promises outright and has been following through on them (again, a change from recently elected presidents) has reinforced this belief.

Not sure why you are assuming everyone will hate him in four years though. Anyone talking about 2012 at this point is a part of the problem. It's time to work together and make shit happen. The old administration severly fucked up this country in almost every way possible, but by far the most damaging aspect was it's division of the people in tyhe nation to whole new levels. While the idea of "change" may be considered a slogan by some, it's something that we need to do if we want to end the destruction of our economy.

Seems like there are more flames than actual discussions, so I'd say it's just you making better use of your energy than laziness. :o)

a man put in control of the 'the most powerful nation' is going to be hated...  its just a question of whether the majority of his own country will hate him or not!

personally, i like him, and i hope only the best for him and the country.  thats all.. just wanted to say that...
