Hoping someone can help me out...probably a simple fix, but I'm lost.

Recently, when I try to type anything - anywhere (google search, MS word, forum posting..etc.) it's like my keyboard is set to "hot keys."  Nothing gets typed, just brings up a different function or window for each character typed - additionally, instead of scrolling a page up or down, the scroll wheel on my mouse adjusts the font size.  Is this a simple settings issue or is my PC fryed?  In case you didn't figure it out, I'm typing this from a different computer.

PS I'm running a basic Dell with Windows XP

i use a dell with xp at work. it is FRESH OUT OF THE BOX, and has so many problems i can't even begin to tell you.

slow as hell, locks up whenever i try to shut down or log out, locks up any time i try to open more than one tab in a browser....THIS THING WAS FRESH OUT OF THE BOX, mind you.

bottom line: a computer that is brand fucking new shouldn't be having problems like this. don;t tell me "you have to install service pack such and such, you have to get this or that component or software"...FUCK THAT. if i'm paying good money for a computer, it should come with everything i need, ready to go.

in contrast, my home computer (powerbook G4) has worked without any major issues for 5 years and running. free self-installing updates from apple, no fuss, no worry. maybe you like to spend hours and hours tinkering and fucking with your dell, but i love that my computer runs smoothly with minimal maintenance.

PS. i'm not one of those rabid mac freaks either, i have tried both platforms, and i prefer mac for the aforementioned reasons. i still have to use my Dell with XP at work every single day, which just reminds me of how much it sucks balls... hence why i responded to the thread.

If you have clearance at work, uninstall every single program that came installed and isn't used for work. Dell is notorious for loading an abundance of RAM sucking programs that aid you in no way shape or form.

macs are pc's for dummies. fisher price looking os that never has conflicts simply for the users not needing to learn and grow as a user.

...or it's just easy to use and trouble free? why over-complicate your life? i want to check my e-mail and download music, not "grow as a user", whatever the fuck that means.

and have you seen vista? if it was biting OSX's aesthetic  any harder, there would be teeth marks.

vista and osx are apples and oranges, the only close match is the addition of 'widgets' which pretty much is available for any os right now. you got mac cause you don't know much about computers, thats fine. I on the other know a decent amount therefore i know how to make my machine run how i like it to.

sometimes a brand new computer can have problems.  it can happen to a mac too.

i'm a computer engineer.  i use macs and pcs and i love them both.

if you buy a binding and it snaps out of the box... sometimes it's just a defect.    think about how many are manufactured.   do you expect them all to come out perfect?   don't be so ignorant.

as for the OP, i'm not sure what happened to your computer.  i've heard of viruses that remap keys but i don't know if that is your problem.

try a system restore.   if it's a work computer, they should have recovery disks.    if it's your home computer, see if you can back it up before restoring/reformatting.

It's unfortunate that you got a bad machine but hardly an accurate representation of the product Dell or anyone puts out.  I'd say their out of box failure rate is somewhere around 1%-2%.  Sucks to be that 1 or 2% but they actually make a pretty good machine.

personally, i had no problems with xp (make sure you download all the latest security updates, etc). vista, on the other hand...

sounds like one of the keys could be jammed. my mouse scroll bar makes everything larger or bigger if i press on the control button at the same time. i would try swapping the keyboard first before uninstalling or messing with any of the software.
