I've got a friend who has size 18 feet, and he hasn't been able to snowboard in a few years because he couldn't find any boots.  I'm pretty sure I could custom fit his boots in order to make him fit in at least a pair of 17's, hopefully even some 16's, but I'm having a hard time finding any companies that make any boots that are that big.  Can anyone recommend some boots that he could try out?

I would say two things...

first, send your buddy to a good boot fitting place, maybe even a ski shop and have him sized up properly. Then, e-mail companies like burton and ride and k2 to see if they will custom make a boot that is his size. If they want too much green, try one of the smaller companies like 32, deelux, celsius or someone like that and see what they can do. It sucks for him to have to deal with that much bs to snowboard, and odds are that the custom job will cost an arm and a leg, but it may be worth it if he loves snowboarding enough.

Have him contact Vans. Vans is all about custom making shoes and boots and affordable prices. They do make boots that size. They dont generally sell them because of the such low demand for them, but they are out there.

and even if you call around shops to see if they have some in stock, wouldn't be a bad idea, or if they called their suppliers to see if they have some in stock, reguardless, even if its from last year, or 2-3 years ago...im sure there brand new in box never used, because who has 18 size feet, that board, on a constant basis :P

the problem with trying to find a pair in stock is that nobody makes a boot that big for retail sales. You might be able to find soemone who is willing to custom make a pair, but nobody just has them lying around. Think about it, for a company to produce a size 18 boot is pointless because no shop will buy it because 99.9% of the time there is no customer for it

Yeah when I worked at a skate shop, we got a size 15 in ONCE in the 2 years I worked there.. and that was just because we got a huge shipment of Globes because they were cleaning out their warehouse. Mind you that one pair sold the day we got it, but that was just a fluke. It was rare that we got anyone coming in asking for anything bigger than a 13 or 14.. and that was just for skate shoes. I'd imagine the demand for a snowboard boot in even a 15 would be less than for skate shoes, since they're not sport specific the way snowboard boots are.

quite true. but my guess is, if he does call them, they might have some great advice for him reguardless from their point of view...doesn't hurt, unless you get the 16 year ol rep thats there that night, with limited experiance :P

I'd be willing to bet that 95% of the people he talks to will shrug and say... "we don't have that size and I don't know anyone who does"

which is very true considering that size actually doesn't exist as far as I know. His best bet would be to contact the various companies directly and see if it would be possible to have a boot made

I will probably just give vans a call and see what they can do for him, what sucks is that he probably won't be able to try them on before he buys them, and it will be harder to tell how much I can size him down when I custom fit them.

As far as the board I suggested, I suggested the Arbor Roundhouse in a 167, that thing is a boat, but its still a pretty sweet board.

Thanks for the help guys.

well, as long as you buy a size 18 shell, you can make the boot work. I would get a branic device and have his foot properly measured. With feet that size though, he probably already knows his size by heart. There are alot of ways to make the boots fit better once you atleast get in the right shell size. You can streach liners, cut elastic etc to make them bigger, and you can use heal lifts and foam on the ankle with insoles to make them smaller.

yeah, I know how to do all of that stuff, I just don't know how much heel/toe drag he'll get with a size 18 shell, which is why I wanted to try a 17.

dont worry about the heal and toe drag, there are ways to fix that. You can use the riser plates which will fix it for sure. Plus, there are wide boards out there that are made for people with wide feet. The Elan El Grande has a waist width of 28.0 cm at a 163 cm lenght. My board board which is 24.5 cm waist in a 154 will accomade a person with a size 13 boot without problem.
The next thing to look at is bindings. Certain bindings have higher toe extenders or gas pedels. By just having a binding that elevates the toes, and working on how it is best stationed on a board, you can do alot in the ways of heal and toe drag.

Ride makes an 18 in the Duece.  Vans largest production boot stops at 16.  Nike can make a boot though for him although after looking at their air force one pieces of shit I wouldn't recommend it.  Chances are 18 sneaker probably 15 boot if you build up his arch raise the heel and grind the toe in the footbed down.  Also get a leather boot throw it in the convection oven for 5 minutes yes i'm talking the shell here.  Then put the hydralic punch in and push the toe out a bit more.

167 is a bit huge for this kid check out some of the NS wide boards they're all around 26ish and if he's riding reference stance he should be fine.

The kid's an athletic 6'6'' 280, and he used to ride until it became to hard to get gear his size, so I don't think that he'll have a very hard time on a 167, but I'll definitely check out the NS wides, and the Elans as well, to see what they've got for him...actually I was just checking out the specs on the 163 roundhouse, and it's still at 26.8 so that should still be plenty wide for him...
I measured him at about a 16.5 on the branic, so I'm thinking I might be able to stretch those vans 16's (I'm afraid he would destroy the deuces in about a week because they are so soft) around his foot.  thanks for the heads up el, it should be fun stretching the shit out of these boots.

OH when you do put it in the convection oven remember to take the liner out mold the liners seperately.  But it sounds like you have it figured out which rocks and I remember you saying you're a boot fitter so I'm not too worried.  If you have any questions on the shell let me know, if you're doing the Fargo's for boots for him there's a plastic piece in the tip of the shell of the toe that will stretch a bit just play it safe and keep checking the temp of the boot with your hand when in the convection oven.
