a little bit of advice....take the blackberry back, especially if for whatever insane reason you bought the 7100, RIM is junk.

I got a Treo 700wx.  Same services and cost, basically.  Luckily work covers 40% :)  I like it alot, but being in constant contact with work email actually sucks....I want to toss the damn thing out the window half the time.  But having internet to check weather, radar, movie times, restaurant menus, and navigation far outweigh the downsides.

I do have to admit that RIM didnt do to bad a job with the curve or the pearl. Its just the software issues with in the phones themselves. they may have revamped the OS on the blackberrys to fix issues they constantly had with earlier models (like the 7100, i hate that phone with a passion). The way the phone it self operates is good....except for the tiny tiny keypads.

Are the monthly fees for them still as expensive as fuck? When I supported them a couple years back the plans were 80-90 dollars a month...for essentially a cell phone you can check your email on....awesome!  Hence the reason why I never wanted to own one.

What's really funny is to watch how long someone can leave it on a table at the bar before they pick it up again, they really are crackberrys.

well in canada until Telus or bell or rogers wakes up your prices will always be insane for anything pertaining to cell phones. I heard verizon is thinking about moving up there. Hope your country doesnt have any laws on monopolies, because every single canadian will shit when they see their prices.

I used to cell verizon phones on plans for canada/us calling to canadians because it was actually less expensive even with the exchange rate (that was  back when it was close to 15 or 20%).

The curve? Could be. Problem is its too new to really know. Another big thing is who is your carrier? Sometimes phones will actually work better on a different provider. People who use GSM seem to have a better time with the BB's for what ever reason. But for instance, LG and samsung kick ass on verizon, but seem to suffer on cingular (cdma vs gsm).

It isnt through Sprint is it? If so back that thing up every day, and keep on top of the software updates for it, the 700 and 750 have had issues using windows and sometimes, for no apparent reason, will completely delete information on the phone and just decide to stop working

I bought myself a Blackberry Curve 8310 (AT&T) a week ago for my 21st birthday.  My first smartphone, and I love this thing.  I'm always using it to look up a restaurant's number, traffic conditions with the Google Maps app, or checking my messages with the Facebook app.

Oh yeah, and checking my email.  Sometimes I forget that's why I bought the phone in the first place.  The monthly bill isn't too pretty though; the data plan with unlimited messaging is an extra $50 on top of my voice plan.

I've got the Blackberry Peal, so far stoked on it.  But really anything beats my crappy razor that died in Telus.

Mine is through Alltel, but nearly identical.  CDMA phone.  I have had no data issues with it so far.  The only other thing I forgot to mention was picture-mail...no such thing, as it uses Outlook to send them, not a text-type interface like when I was on Sprint plans.

The other fun issue I had was the Daylight Savings change, but that was easily resolved with a patch and waiting a day for it to roll into effect.

I forgot to mention the memory slot that is very handy.  I have a 1gb micro-sd card tht fits into a san-disk adapter, all fitting enatly into the phone port.  Makes saving photos, docs, ringtones (and making your own), etc very slick....If anyone considers getting one, make sure to get a card as memory is quite small (like 64mb for programs and 64mb for other use).  If you have a card, nearly anything is possible on the Treo.

They charge so much because they can. There are only really three companies competing at the national level for cell phone users. So they don`t have to offer low pricing like in the states where there are dozens.

thats a good deal for you guys. now maybe you wont be getting raped by your phone companies. Its never ceased to amaze me how ungodly expensive canadian cellular services were.

The deregulation isn't going to affect pricing very much, if at all.  It has more to do with the rules that companies have to follow.
The big - and only event - on the horizon is the federal government selling off more of the wireless spectrum at the end of May and the new rules that apply to the use of existing infrastructure by the expected new wireless start-ups.

If these new wireless companies don't make a serious impact, go bankrupt, and/or get bought up by Bell, Rogers, or Telus then there is no hope for reasonable cell rates in Canada.

I was really disappointed to hear Rogers secured the iPhone, this just makes things harder for the new companies that will be coming along.  I am/was thinking of getting one of these but now I'm not so sure.

The thing that keeps prices so high up here and limits competition, other than the lack of spectrum up for sale, is that a wireless provider in Canada must be at least 54% owned by a Canadian company.  I'm sure companies like AT&T and T-Mobile have boatloads of money and want to get in here but they can't because they would have to find a Canadian company willing to put up even more cash than they are willing to.  There is some suspicion that Niagara Networks Inc. might have some backing from a foreign company because they came out of the blue and seem to have a lot of money.

Here's a news article if anyone cares:
