Since this section of the forum is for the more mature riders, we should take advantage of our God-given right to whine and complain about getting old and hurt....
For example, on Saturday I came off the lift, did a very low speed ass plunk with a half twist, put out my back somehow.  Could hardly walk on the weekend, but am on the mend, should be ok to board this weekend if there's any snow left.  Will be missing a hockey game tonight, though.  Made for a very short day at the local hill, it's a good thing I didn't drive a couple hours to go somewhere good.

OK, Im done, anybody else hurt themselves lately??

Man that's terrible!!!!  I hate when you get hurt doing something simple like getting of the lift!!  2 words...tiger balm!

How about this...broke my 5th metatarsel in October...still hurts but no biggie, and I had a bunion removed November 7th!!!  Now I know to discuss bunions we should have a section for riders older than 70 but....figured i would throw that in!  Now that hurt to shit!  But its all better now!!!!!

Yea, my last real injury was getting off the lift a couple years ago.  I got overconfident, stepped off the board before it had stopped, ran over the free leg, and ended up with a twisted ankle.  It hurt too much to ride; but I was so embarrassed that I hiked down the hill and wouldn't take a ride from the ski-patrol.

Yeah, I blew my knee out over 5 years ago and have to wear a brace and be careful using that leg. Changes the way you ride forever.... I'm still out there though!

^^^ samuel's avatar makes me think of something that never occured to me before. Was what peppy was doing to that poor cat border line rape? I mean, she was so unwilling, yet he was always groping and grabbing and kissing... Try doing some shit like that and you will end up in jail or with a law suit.

My injury and pain list is unending. I don't pay it no mind, and don't take any PK's. I plan on thouroughly recking my body inside and out by the time I die. If I have a good joint when I am 70, I am going to be pissed that I didn't try hard enough.

Not hurt lately, but I still hurt from a broken foot skating like 8 years ago. A piece of bone broke off and floats around, gets irritated and hurts, mostly when it rains. My right shoulder broke last season, 6 days into a season pass in VT, the big pass too.......I was soo pissed, and im still pissed everytime I lift something. The liggy tore, and the bone cracked.....still hurts. Over the summer I split open my shin skatin, 6 stitches, the most recent, and least painful injury.

Hey Kitten,
I have bunion I've been resisting having fixed as I've heard it's such a pain and a long recovery. How long were you off the foot?

I scraped my entire face catching my edge on a crust layer.  Other than that, I've never been really hurt snowboarding.  Scared to death a few times, though (at Jackson Hole).

But if you want to talk about skateboarding injuries ... broken fibula Dec '06 which ruined last winter season, Sept. 06 faceplant to concrete - broken nose, broken orbital, concussion, lip split wide open.  And in '01 I shattered my tibia plateau (2 screws).  Oh and a knee sprain in the early 90s that took a year to fully heal.

@madmikenyc - I recognize the pic in your avatar.  I love that place.  Now ... have you been to Stamford yet?  You'll likey.

Injuries can stay with you for a long while, especially when you are older. My only snowboarding injury is a pinched nerve in my neck that still bothers me five years later. I was just about to pass a beginner on a blue slope at Mohawk Mountain in Ct. when he lost control and clipped the back of my board. I caught a heel edge and went down heavily on my left shoulder. I lost all feeling in  the shoulder from the whiplash and thought I had broken something. My helmet strap came loose and the helmet went flying. I think in this case the extra weight of the helmet added to the whiplash. Anyway, after I recovered some feeling in the arm (after several minutes) I went back up and rode again immediately. But the neck still bothers me if I move the wrong way, or even step off the kerb incorrectly (e.g., I miss my step.) Getting older is a bitch, but better than the alternative.

I got whacked hard twice yesterday.  The first was in the morning. Was out powder riding with a fellow instructor. Next thing I know he shouts my name and accidentally jammed his board into the back of my calf and flipped over me. At first I was inspecting to see if my pants had a slice/hole and/or if I was bleeding (it was a hard hit).  Went down to the lodge, and I took a look. I've got a huge bruise that is swelling out big as my fist today and is very black and purple, but luckily with so much muscle there, no broken bones, just one amazing hematoma. Didn't keep me from continuing to ride all day and is only tender to touch.

To finish the night off, I decided to try (for the first time ever) a rodeo-3. That did not go so well. I landed and somehow hit my head first in the snow. The whole side of my head is swollen today. I was wearing my helmet as always. I also torked my knee on that same side. I was past the knuckle and on downhill side. Knee isn't swollen, but I think I jammed it.  Just swelling, bumps(literally) and bruises today.

If hell freezes over.... whoever wants to ride there may...
I choose to ride in heaven where it'll always be a powder day

bout a month ago, was in some good, deep pow for the first time in my life and decided I was ready for the trees.  Everything went well for a couple of runs, until I found myself at a decent jump/drop.  I launched it, thinking the pow will cushion me no matter what, but landed way too far back on my tail, squating hard sideways with a sharp pain in my knee.  I kept riding for another hour with occasinal pain because I just couldn't make myself go home on what was one of the greatest days of my life.  That night my knee was swollen and I was freaking out that I was going to need surgery or something - I thought it was all over.  Did a lot of research and found it probably just a sprained LCL in need of rest.  I hobbled around on it a few weeks and, last monday, had an even deeper pow day - this time it was sunny and no pain.

6 weeks ago while in Utah, I crashed to avoid plowing through a thicket on my demo board (the Lib Tech Banana - great board, but that's for a different thread)  So as I landed on my back, my inertia took me into a group of trees and I hit my back leg on the outside of my knee.  Luckily, I was strapped in which prevented my leg from completely wrapping around the tree.  I was able to ride down, but I found out when I returned home that I have a cat 2 MCL tear.  I was out for 2 weeks but was able to ride on an easy day with a donjoy knee brace.  My doctor, specialist and knee brace guy said this was the first MCL injury they every saw due to snowboarding, and I that's why I was able to get back riding early.  I now have to wear the brace for every sports activity for at least a year.  My riding hasn't been that effected, I can still do pow, trees and bumps, but when I jump, my knee can't handle the landing.

Last year, I landed short on a 20' kicker and jammed my left hand into the snow.  When I took my glove off while riding to the bottom, my pinky finger was dislocated and at a 90 degree angle.  It hadn't started to swell, and since I had dislocated it before (ski injury when I was 8 and multiple times playing basketball and football) I knew what was in store for me, so w/o thinking, and continuing to ride down, I pulled and reset my finger.  I grabbed some snow to keep the swelling down as I rode up the lift to go to ski patrol.  By the top, it was OK enough.  Again I knew that they would just wrap it up and say be careful.  So I stuck my pinky and ring finger in the ring finger part of the glove to give it support and continued to ride - it was a great spring day.  I went to the doctors the next day and she said it was set well and won't need a splint or cast but I now should wrap it when I ride and do other stuff.  So I duct taped the pinky and ring fingers together on all my winter gloves.  Yet another use for Duct tape.

And I've had a couple concussions too.....
The great thing about the future is it always begins tomorrow.

Dislocated my shoulder at Stratton 3 weeks ago.  Just barely missed having surgery.  I tore the labrum (cartilage), fractured the bone where the labrum attaches and strained the rotator cuff.  good possibility my season is over.  Finalyl starting to get movement back after 3 weeks of physical therapy.  I've had my fair share of injuries over the years and this one had me thinking I was definately going to have surgery.  I've torn my knee up, broke my elbow, and seperated my shoulder as far as joint significant injuries and usually after a few days I had some movement coming back.  With this it took almost a week to move it 6 inches.  Doc told me the end of April I might be able to get out.  That means I should be able to go in a little over a month in doc speak.

Now I'm worried about the beginning of golf season too.

^^^I have had two shoulder surgeries on my right shoulder. Last surgery was just last summer. I tore my labrum, and it was just never stable after that. I kept dislocating it over and over. Not just on bad falls, I would dislocated it doing dumb stuff... like closing a car door. Once that labrum is torn, there's not much you can do except surgery. I wouldn't say your season is over, but you'll really have to go conservative. I know that golfing was out of the picture for me. It might not be that bad for you right now, but it will get worse, I hate to say it. Labrum doesn't heal itself. Once cartalege is torn, it doesn't heal up by itself.

Sucks man, I know your pain.

Trust me I know.  I have torn cartilage in my knee.  My older brother has a torn labrum from when he played professional baseball and my younger brother had a capsular shift done on his right shoulder.  His was so bad it was dislocating in his sleep.

Suprisingly the shoulder is fairly stable right now.  I am getting very little pain from the labrum.  Most of the pain is coming from the rotator cuff, which suprises me and scares me.  They told me it was only strained, but I'm starting to feel like it is torn.  I'm fortunate for the area I live in and who our family friends are.  The ortho working on me is team ortho for the NJ Devils.

It's nice to be in areas with good sports medicine docs. Seattle has the UW sports medicine. Pretty good group of docs. Sounds like you're family should invest in some glucosamine and chondroitin stock, then go on a spending spree!!

...so I'm on my annual spring fling in Tahoe and I discover a somewhat hidden run in Heavenly called "advanced roundabout" (intermediate, at best).  It's a slushy blast, but on my second ride, I saw some people walking a little higher up the hill and dropping in through the woods, so I decided to give it a try - bad idea.  First, there's a giant log that I guessed I could just ride over, but roll over the thing to a 4 foot, nose vertical drop (foreshadowing sucks).  Then, farther down, the snow abrubtly ends to a steep bare patch.  I'm guessing everyone is just ATV-ing it down this thing, so I go for it - bad idea.  I make it about a foot and get launched, landing on my arm, tweaking my shoulder and, worse, smashing it into my ribs.  The shoulder pain disappeared, but my rib hurt all the next day.

It's been a week and my rib still hurts when I do any push up-type movements and/or breath in deeply.  I've had this same type injury surfing (nose poked me) and know it's just a matter of time with not much in the way of therapy...other than not moving.

I get injured a lot. It's out of control. I just had my 11th surgery 4 weeks ago to fix bursitis in my shoulder blade (snapping scapula). I don't even remember how I hurt it originally.

But the shoulder should be good to go come January, so I'll be back on the hill teaching and riding.

I'm starting the season injured too!  (if I get any boarding in this season) - I broke my ankle mountain biking in late September, got the plaster cast off last week, was disappointed to see my ankle is still really swollen.  I get the screw removed from my ankle next week, then some physio.  I was hoping things would be fine for Christmas, not so sure now....

mountain biking is the probably among the most dangerous sports....just too many parts to get tangled up in and simply the nature of the bike makes me all agro.  After decades of surfing and skateboarding practically injury free - I broke my thumb and practically my wrist within the first couple of months after buying a mt. bike.  Only do road bikes now....so I can still do everything else

Hi all.  I'm kind of new around here.  Was a member a few years ago but completely lost all my log in details so started afresh.  Was also a 20 something then.  Am now a 30 something.

Since being here last time and coming back this time, I've qualified as a sports and remedial massage therapist and am working for one of our local ice hockey teams.  They're not very good and they tend to get broke a lot so they give me plenty of experience!!

I've recently decided that I want to specialise in winter sports injuries, since I spend most of my time around winter sports of some discription, so although I'm really sorry about all your injuries, I'm also reading this with interest.  I'm currently compliling a list of common injuries and it seems, as you would expect, that wrists and shoulders are the most common injury sites for snowboarders.

If anyone ever needs any advice on soft tissue injuries, please feel free to PM me.
