Robert - I am definietly headed up VERY early that morning form the house.  I'm about 90 mins from Taos if you care to stop by the night before.

AND... you up for either Durango or Wolf Creek this coming weekend??  I live about 2 miles from the Santa Ana Casino - right on your way if you and Jr are thinking of riding Sat or Sun.  Daughter will be at WOlf Creek with friends all weekend - so I could bump into her.  If by myself - then I'll probably head to Santa Fe... but with someone - it has to be one of those!!!

Not enough riding so far this season.  But alas am in the best shape I've been in the past 4-5 seasons - was told that old diabetes regimen is in the future so I've cut 17 lbs in the past 4 weeks and daily trips to the gym... and just continue.  Tonight I did all of my hand weights while atop the Boca ball... excellent for snowboarding ankle strength and balance... nothing like a imagining a heel-side turn with twist while pressing weights.

If free helps you overcome your principles:
Over the weekend in Angel Fire, ( Snowboarders mountain just east of Taos) I heard that several of the board manufacturing companies will be at the Taos opening with freebies galour.  It also sounds like it will be a total invasion from at least the southwestern snowboarding community.  I also read an old (4 or 5 years)Taos ski magazine at the cabin we rented in Eagle Nest.  It had an interview with the lady that owns the SKI resort.  In that interview she was asked why they shunned snowboards.  She explains that the myth her father had said that they would never allow snowboarding was a myth.  It was based on economics and the Rich folk in Dallas (evidently their big draw) wanted to keep it snowboard free and that it would remain an economical decision.  (I can understand that)

Then I read a more recent article.  She stated that she had come under increasing pressure from people in the valley and some of their clientel to allow snowboards.  So there you have it,  if you want to make more money- build a better mouse trap or allow snowboarders.
And for you parkaholics:  they are building a park with a future half pipe in the works.
After the crowds Saturday at Angel Fire, I can't wait,  hopefully the crowd will go a little further west.

Thanks for that update from Angel Fire, its starting to sound like a sweet time going down. I'm hearing more folks leaning on the "showing up to support the local shreds" side. I'm trying to talk a local brewery peeps to represent with their fine hand crafted beer.

On the devils tongue, those crazy dudes at SLF on myspace sent me some more funny stuff.

I've tried not to read that ridetaos message board...I just don't know if I should laugh or cry from those comments. Some of those folks are *SO* delusional it's truely incredible:

"As a skier and nearly annual visitor
(regardless of snowcondition) for about 33 years have memories of skiing in classes with TSV Legends
such as Franz, Viktor, Dadu, Jean, Doug, Max, Chilton,Keith, Wilms etc.I have come to the conclusion that skiing on a moutain such as Taos with it's challenging terrain and trails next to the in general rude and inconsidered boarder hoards would be near suicidal. Therefor, I have come to the very sad conclusion that my next Ski-destination will be Alta. I was present when Ernie's Ashes were released over his beloved Skivalley.and I don't think he would approve of this. Mickey it is clear you lost to Chris.

GOOD LUCK GUYS, you will need it."

Just being 'next to' snowboarders is 'near suicide'....
They should be handing out little red clown noses for all the 'die hard' skiers that will be freakin out on that day!

Just had a big day at my local resort. So I'm in the bar enjoying myself...yucking it up with friends, etc. And I notice this old time woman who's a local resort "celebrity", in that she's had a pass here for probably 30 yrs now, and rides every day...first chair to last chair...she's probably a young 50 or so I'd guess. Hard core telemarker. She generally doesn't come in the bar, for various reasons, so it was weird to see her there...so I chat her up a bit. She's not the biggest fan of snowboardres and likes to bitch about shit generally. So I've told her how I'm going to Taos for opening day...and she tells me how March 19th...the day Taos 'opens' is her birthday. I rub her nose in it a bit.

Eventually I find out another rider from my local hill will be there. The guy is this tool...always talking smack about how good he is, etc, and it just seems to me like all I see him doing is buttchecking the hill and then making excuses about how the snow was weird or this or that. Shame he'll be there.

Drove through Taos yesterday - twice... on our way to AngelFire!

rubbertoe - I had forgotten how memorable groomed snow could be.  But as I made my first run down corduroy I remember our trip last year and how perfect it was.  I love carving, and there is something to be said for a resort that can get it so perfect every time.  But there was powder too!  They must have gotten abou 18" the day before - because off the groomed were all the little trails or edges that they'd left a nice soft powder.  All in all it was a great day.

But it left me wondering - there was no crowd, no lift lines, and few boarders.  Once Taos opens in 2 weeks, what that will do to AngelFire.  Oh well - their dilemna to contend with.  But it was alot of fun - and for our youngest... IMing from the lift her friends back in Math class.

See you guys on the 19th!

ult - there will be no problem finding you!

I'm still looking for a shirt design - a snowboarder sitting in the FRONT of a school bus.

Wow, some of the posts on that site were unbelievable, I wonder if some of the hate is fake trolling. Temped to go down there with skis on and fuck shit up. Then put a board on and be all nicey nicey.

But nah...

Better things to do with my time.

The irony is that this site discriminates just as bad as Taos. Took me a couple of years to figure that out...

If I wasn't a walking wounded I might be tempted to go just to spread a little love around.  I think I'm stuck with fishing this spring.  I went to a Texas lake last weekend and drove through a town named Sweetwater.  I haven't been through it in about four years and there was about 100 wind generators then.  Now there is several thousand. The size of those things boggles the mind.  Some of the folks that have moved to the country are now sueing because their views have been ruined by them.  They probably stop by their lawyers office on the way to a Global Warming rally.

Killz you might try Questa for a cheaper place to stay, it is not a very long drive.  Back in my day you might even find a TeePee up that way to stay in with one of the old hipsters,  I think they all went the way of the doo doo and the ski only resorts.  Some of us are even drug free (government tested at that) with 401k's.  Our focus and attention spans have been affected.

Mike if you hike to the Blacks in the back of Angel Fire they are not groomed and the powder doesn't get tracked very rapidly.  Watch the green at the bottom, it is not groomed and requires you to maintain your speed.

Well I did not mean to start trouble, teach me for posting drunk.

But yeah, I mean the name of the site is snowboard, not snow sports, not snow fun, etc.
I guess it is similar, but yet different from MTBR. MTBR is about mountain biking, which is very different from road biking, even though they are both bicycles.

Skiing and snowboarding are much more similar, and I ride with skiers frequently, and will be getting back on skis soon. So, my ski buddies don't really fit in around here. There are not too many pics of skiers other than Kill's buddy he rides with, etc.

Telemark tips on the other hand, is more of a specialized sport forum. hard core teleskiers and snowboarders don't ride together as much, excluding split boarders, which are the minority.

So I see it in kind of a us vs them light. SB welcomes snowboarders, skiers not so much. Much like Taos in the opposite direction. Skiers are not outlawed here, but SB does not cater to them or make them feel overly welcome do they?

But I really wasn't trying to dissuade anyone from posting here. Sorry to start trouble. It is fine for people to hang out and talk with like minded individuals. It is more fun to ride with other snowboarders as opposed to skiers, as the lines and stopping areas or more similar.

No trouble here. But come on...it IS snowboard.com. Over all...I think skiers are treated pretty darn well considering the site name and all. I've posted pictures of the teliers I ride with a lot and no one has EVER said anything like "DUDE!!! Don't post pictures of those lame wanker two plankers man!" it's usually more like..."Nice powder!" If anything I'm generally surprised at how well skiers are treated here...not that there's a lot here (any?)..but again...the site name. I don't think your typical snowboarder would be treated as well at Skiersrule.com...but again...just my conjecture. Also...I don't think it's snowboard.com's responsibility to cater to skiers...if they wanted to do that...they would have called it snowsports.com...like you said.

Seems like you're asking a bit much from a site named snowboard.com.

And as for you getting back on the sticks...enjoy. I've been saying I'll be doing that for years now...and one of these days I'll have to make it happen. Especially if I can get a pair of those sweet lib tech skies they're making now.

And yes...I'm sure you can find instances of some 14 yr old on this site whining how skiers suck...but they are surprisingly few and far between over all...and most I wouldn't even call 'true' snowboarders...just punk kids...what ever that means.

You should post drunk more often. Hell...everyone should.

May I direct your attention to the next thread down, "Damn Skiers!!" http://snowboard.colonies.com/forums/topic/43851/

But more importantly, it is not how they are treated, but if they are welcomed.
Look at from other shoes. Would you be attracted to join a site called skiers rule, like you suggested? Probably not.
Maybe ski.com since ski is a general term.

Would you join a forum called JewishUltimateFrisbee.com? No. If I knew more about ultimate, I could make a better hypothetical.

Bottom line, I am not asking anything from this site, I am reading and posting less.

But I hate to be putting a wrench in their spokes, that's why I feel kind of bad about bringing it up int he first place. I do see some parallels in Taos not welcoming boarders, as snowboard.com inherently not welcoming skiers.

While I can see your comparison to taos and snowboarding.com...I think it's a bit off the mark. Taos operates on public land, and was 'banning' certain groups of 'the public' (snowboarders) from their own land. Snowboard.com is a 'free' website that anyone can join and participate in...if they feel like it. Will they feel welcomed or even be accepted? That's for that person to decide via their own interactions and the community as a whole.

I might join a site called skiersrule.com just to heckle the clowns there...and if I did, I'm sure I'd meet some interesting people that 'rule'. But over all as the site name states...it's not really my interest.

Doing a quick little skim of the Damn Skiers thread...I still don't see THAT much skier hate here...the occasional barb and frustration...but mostly I see folks understanding that people are people...regardless of what's on their feet.

Still not sure why all the hate for the site...just cause it's not inclusive to all the snow lovers? While I can understand that I think it's asking a bit much from a site called snowboard.com. It is what it is...and that's a snowboarding site...for better or worse. And as always...it's a 'community' so the people that are 'members' define it's feel/presence/image.

I get tired of all the silly banter...so I try and post trip reports to show folks that there's more to snowboarding then talking about what kind of car you want to buy. It's member driven....so if you've got an issue...and care at all (which is fine if you don't)...then drive the place where you want to go.

(You should start skiing and do nothing but post ski photos of yourself and buddies...THAT would be fun!)

Well tomorrow is the big day, I'm trying to figure out how to get out the office

I want to spill my guts about Taos, I went there and learned to ski about 5 years ago so that I could experience that mountain and get free lessons and ticket from a bud (who rides) in TSV ski school. My impressions were 1) the mountain is beautiful and 2) the legend of the "Taos ski snob" was confirmed. Let me just say, ugly things were said in my presence while I was undercover as a skier. I have resented this experience since and those messages posted on ridetaos.org represent well what I speak of.

*Let me just say one thing about shit-talking as a simple street rule; if you can't say something to one's face, then you probably shouldn't say it all*

Anyhow, since that day I have successfully converted many skiers to riding as an instructor. This was my own little covert operation intended to change attitudes that we encounter from once-a-year visitors, that often came to Santa Fe because parents could not take their snowboarding kids to Taos. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying everyone should ride, but I am saying that respect for each others discipline would be nice. Unfortunately here in New Mexico, it doesn't exist. In fact this year in our locker room in "ski school" the same bullshit talk happened over the Taos news. Let me just say, one very well known PSIA instructor who writes monthly articles, knows that shit talking can only leads to trouble .

Anyhow, putting on my positivity hat, the end of the Taos ban is a sign of the times, its one less divisive resort in existence. The new generation of skiers is nothing like the fading generation who believe bans should exists or that skiing is superior for what ever reasons. The future is now, when you see the groups of people shredding together both on skis and boards, thats the shit right there. My bud who freakin rips on skis, is right there with me on this too.

Cheers to you all, peace.

Well...I'm down here and rode at Ski Santa Fe today. In my fag-bag, romper suit, one piece, oney, etc.
Needless to say, few people thought I looked weird. Seems like that ugly ski elite-ist fashion is still in high regard in these parts. I did have one boarder come over and want a picture with me...since I looked so hilarious...but beyond that I didn't notice to many people looking weirdly at my get up...and that's very wrong. People dressed in my get up should be mocked, celebrated, or heckled...what ever...but not ignored.

I was expecting this nice mellow day...a tuesday...at Ski Santa Fe...wrong. It happens to be most TX'n school's spring break...the place was a mess. Let's just say that I'm glad I don't have to ride in that environment much..what a bunch of gapers.

I took pictures of my romper suit compadres all day, pictures to come, as well as befriended several locals...the few folks I could find that weren't dangling day passes.

Psyched to check out Taos tomorrow and see if the hype is all it's been cut out to be. This is close to 20 years in the making for me...so I'm psyched.

I'll be there early.

Peace to all the snow lovers.

That photo was me and two others getting the first 'real' chair for Boarders at Taos. They raffled off 40 seats on the first 10 chairs for a charity cause...with skiers and boarders being on them...so I'm not counting them. Although one guy slept at the chair over night and Taos was cool enough to let him be on the very first chair...with the raffle winners. Me and the other two were there at 6:00 a.m. or so...where we did shots of tequilla that the sleep over guy provided.

It was an incredible day...felt WAY more love from the workers/people/pass holders then I expected and barely expereinced any haters at all. I never saw that clown with the Ernie Blake is crying poster...I would have heckled them viciously though...especially since they were a telemarker....how quickly they forget some resorts used to ban telemarkers back in the day too. Clown.

I've got lot's of pictures and stories from the day, but they'll have to wait for a bit.

All I've got to say is this: If you want to be one hell of a free rider...move to Taos and get a pass NOW. The place has Terrain like no one's biz and is very steep. Incredible spot.

I've spent close to 20 years heckling the Blakes (family that owns Taos) and cursing them. Deservedly so in my opinion...they focused on hate and division, rather then love and community...but they pulled off a great opening and the place was very welcoming. Hopefully it'll be a water shed moment in skier/boarder relations...and for that, I've got nothing but thanks for them.

I'll be back to Taos...and I'd encourage others to visit the place as well. It's memorable as well as VERY worthy.

Life's to short for grudges folks...and hate makes you ugly and ill...Peace and love to all snow lovers!
