what are so important about sidewalls.. ie. slimewalls, rubber sidewalls, etc.

and what are they used for?

Look at your snowboard whats that piece between the metal edge and the topsheet?  Sidewall.  Slimewalls are a eurothane so they absorb impacts better supposedly, rubber adds dampening, ptex is the easiest to fix, abs is the standard.
