Just saw Lines, which I found very entertaining.

Like most snowboarding documentaries, it was mostly riders propping up riders, some being called "crazy", "stupid" etc.
In any normal context, from a documentary point of view, I´d say it sucked. But I didn´t watch it as a historical expert, I watched it as a snowboarder.

So. How to review this movie?
First off, it´s quite long. 1 hour 25 minutes from starting credits to ending credits. Pretty cool all the way, though.

You get footage of the different riders, alongside the riders´ commentaries describing their impressions/relationships to eachother. I learnt of Mike Ranquet, Jonaven Moore, Tom Burt, Victoria Jealouse amongst many others.

In many ways, this movie has stoked me more than the other main releases of fall 07, including Catch the Vapors, which I liked, and especially more than Picture this, which I thought was thoroughly horrible. Excluding my countryman´s(Wiig) avy fun, of course.

This review sucks, but trust me. If you like backcountry riding, and thought First Descent lacked substance and had too much Shaun White in it, you´ll really like this one.

Cheers.

Good to hear, Arild! Some of my shreds saw the Craig Kelly biopic last night.  I'm definitely going to have to pick up both of these on DVD.

Also for Arild: Time Well Wasted (Sandbox) has a sick Norway part in it.  Overall it's not quite as good as Flavor Country upon first viewing, but it's still good.

I liked it. It had a documentary feel but wasn't too much of a history lesson. Mainly footage w/ a backstory from pros/ex-pros on the evolution of big mtn riding. Some of the stories the oldtimers told got me laughing pretty hard. Ranquet's duct tape sorel boots? All time. If you enjoy big mountain riding you'll most likely appreciate quite a few shots in this film.

I shot coffee(rather warm) through my nose when hearing about his Sorels, and pretty much everything else other riders told of when speaking about Ranquet. Funny guy for sure! Also cool to learn how buttering was "invented".

Dave: I´ll have to catch Time Well Wasted some time later. I loved the two latter releases from Sandbox, so in the big jungle of epicly crappy snowboard flicks (you know my POV on Picture This, for example), I think the new Sandbox flick will be a breath of fresh air, even though it might not be as good as Flavour Country, which was seriously sick.
Is Sansalone still part of the flick?

Yeah, Sansalone is the primary ripper in the Norway part and still has his own section, which was off the chain.

I completely agree. I was really looking forward to Lines and it really came through.  I really enjoyed this film and would suggest it to anyone who likes big mountain riding.

This is a must-buy for anyone who gravitates toward big mountain snow pr0n.  I saw it last night and am glad I got it.  Ranquet is rad.

I think it's great that for any riders that are newer to the big mountain riding and to watching it on film that they've compiled footage of some of those legendary lines (Hatchet on Mendenhall Towers, Salahsnek on Superspines, any Tom Burt line, etc.)
It's a lot more focussed of a documentary than First Descent which tried to cover the history of everything while showing the story of the trip too and didn't get in depth with much. Not hating on First Descent, but I definitely enjoyed Lines a lot more. I really can't hate on seeing video footage of Travis Rice, Gigi Ruf and Nicolas Muller - those guys really push the game so hard.

I thought Lines was rad.  I looked up to all these people growing up.  It was the hay day of snowboarding imo.  Not to take away from all the sick stuff that goes on these days, but Lines covers a good amount of people that lifted up snowboarding out of the shadow of skiing and basically willed it upon the world.  Not only willed, but took it to them. I liked the interviews.  It tried to capture the big mountain, but ultimately can't quite do it just like the riders said.  You just gotta experience it.
Cast off the burden of misery. Life is for those that seek it.

Picked this up last week.....great reccomendation and amazing movie.

Like other documentaries such as Let It Ride and First Descent, the history was great.  I was amzed to see all the old footage, even if some of it was grainy.  The interviews with all the big-guns of yester-year were great.  Man, Shawn Farmer was one crazy bastard.  Tex Davenport, Tom Burt, Nick Perata, Craig Kelly, Jeremy Jones and the list goes on....

The soundtrack went well with this, but not quite as good as Let It Ride, IMO.

The only complaint I have is the same I had for Let It Ride, although in a slightly different sense: they reused several shots of the "new" guys big-mountain riding.  Yes, I have always understood, as they made sure to point out in this movie, that getting a shot takes LOTS of people and perfect conditions.  But unlike Let It Ride, where the fuocal point of the movie is deceased and only so much footage exists, this movie simply filledthe gaps with repeat footage that I felt was unnecessary.

Showing all aspects of big-mountain shredding was great.  There were mistakes, spills, avalanches, down days, and call-offs.  Nothing was missed.

Out of the "new" class that was being filmed, I would have to say I like Gigi the best...I have liked his riding ever since his section in Futureproof.

PS: Victoria Jealouse is friggen hot!  Not to mention an amazing rider :)

Overall, I would easily still give this an 8.5/10 rating.  Definately worth adding to any collection.

Ride now, work later!
All work and no play is totally missing the point.
