I know there are lots of people who think that art and politics should be seperate. If thats the case, then go back and listen to your Kenny G.

i want to know what you like to listen to that makes you think, or that inspires you to change the way you live or think.

And please make the distinction of bands that TALK and bands that actually live what they say.

I`m looking at getting some more music like this, so let me know what you like.

Currently i`m into

Ani Difranco

Bob Marley

Propagandhi

Crass

Le Tigre

KRS-One

Dead Prez

Against Me!

Soul Flower Mononoke Summit

Dead Kennedys

what do you got?

First one that comes to mind is Rage Against The Machine. Tom Morello was just arrested last week for protesting! Personally, I think he should spend more time remembering how to make good music like he did in RATM and less time protesting.

Refused wrote a couple of manifestos along with their songs back in the days, including the Handbook for Revolutionnaries, that was done after Songs To Fan The Flames Of Discontent in '96. it pretty much shows the point of view from the band members on today's music, economy and politics, society, religion and straight-edgism. plus, comments on the lyrics of their songs because yeah, they didnt just write random stuff about revolution because it's the "cool thing".

on a more white trash note, i'll add Blood For Blood, one of the most nihilistic bands around. lol, i mean, just read the booklet for Outlaw Anthems, you'll get Rob's point.

Despite his claims otherwise ("I don't fuck with politics, I don't even follow em"), Talib Kweli is definitely on that tip. On Quality shortly after Sept 11th he rhymed "The president's a Bush/ the vice president's a Dick/ so a who lotta fukkin is what we gon' get".
Also I can't believe that KRS got mentioned and Chuck D of Public Enermy didn't. PE for life.

i am not one for political mvsic, and havent been for many years. it is probably the most played subject to write mvsic about. bvt the new Ignite albvm is fvcking stellar. it has my vote for being in the top 5 albvms of the year. and who wovld have thvnk it, it's pvnk rock. the melodies and actval songwriting is where it shovld be. and that is AT.

i don`t mean to be a stickler for detail, but Green Day, Rancid, Jedi Mind Tricks, Pennywise, and Nirvana don`t seem like political bands.  the Slackers write great lyrics about the current american gov`t, but i wouldn`t call them a `political` band.

To me, a political group is one that does more than pen the occasional `society sucks` lyric, or put out a song on an Anti-Bush CD.

For me, it has to show in how the band conducts itself off-stage.  Even though i don`t care for their music, Pearl Jam tried to fight against Ticketmaster, as well as support a bunch of other progressive campains.

Do the artists try to do buisness in an ethical way? Do they just sell sweat-shop t-shirts or even shoes, like Bad Religion?, Do they care more about making an ethical living  more than making a killing?

and of, course, what someone pointed out was correct. How could i miss Public Enemy? And Poor Righteous Teachers?

And i also forgot

DOA

Fugazi

Mike Park

Warsaw Pack

Subhumans/Citizen Fish

Born Against

Are you telling me
Pearl Jam's - Jeremy (about a boy getting teased then commits suicide infront of his peers)
Pearl Jam's - World Wide Suicide
Nirvana's - Territorial Pissings (about the streotype macho man that he didn't believe in)
Nirvana's - Rape Me (being invaded upon by the media as they intruded into his life)
Nirvana's - Breed (girls aren't just for sex)
Nirvana's - Come As You Are (stop being fake)
Nirvana's - In Bloom (stop being a poser/someone your not just to fit in)
Nirvana's - Polly ( about a little girl who was kidnapped rapped etc)

Maybe not as much political and more Societal those are some I could name off the top of my head.

i took a politics and pop music class in university... it was an amazing class... and the prof was from england and was around 20 when the punk movement started... he had a huge sex pistols poster in his office...

but anyways... to me artists can be political for many reasons, and its not always in there lyrics... for example the specials were very controversial because they had white and black people in the band and at some of the places they preformed in, that wasnt really looked upon nicely..... or the velvet underground were one of the first bands to have a women play a main instrument, the drums... before that if a women was in a band she was either a singer or just played with the tambourine...

but some of my favs are....

talib kweli
mos def
bob dylan
anti-flag
against me!
k'naan
nas

and thats all for now

Black Sabbath, without a doubt.

Yeah, a lot of the bands mentioned here are more societal than political, but the two are closely linked.

Rents- your politics and pop music professor had a sex pistols poster in his office? Trying to resist jumping to conclusions here... but hes losing credibility with me. meh
