I want to be out there with you but I may not have a say in it. The other bummer is that my job will be short staffed for April so who knows if I can get any time off. This season seems to be working against me but I'll at least try to get up to Whistler to hang out on one of the weekends.
You don't need to be picked up from the airport or anything, do you? Just let me know.
AFTER THE REVOLUTION THERE WILL BE NO MORE HAMBURGERS

I'm not leaving during the Olympics... i want to be here if it's amazing or if it sucks.... and less than 10% of the skiable terrain is going to be closed..... they aren't even touching Blackcomb and the good stuff on Whistler will still be opened. How do you figure the backcountry will be fucked for access??? I haven't heard anything about that.
Apparently we get an extra week off in April, so if that doesn't fall during Telus I may be up for a trip then.

Temporary Road Modifications: Whistler and Sea to Sky
To facilitate safe, reliable transportation for athletes, officials, workforce, spectators and the general public in the
Sea to Sky corridor, the Olympic and Paralympic Transportation Team will:
•
Reconfigure the Sea to Sky Highway and Highway 99 in Whistler to ensure the smooth flow of traffic
o
Two lanes northbound in the morning from Horseshoe Bay to Function Junction
o
Two lanes southbound from Squamish as needed
o
Temporary Olympic Lane northbound from Function Junction with priority given to transit buses,
Olympic-accredited vehicles, delivery trucks and other commercial vehicles
o
Traffic signal at Highway 99 and Nancy Green as alternate for local traffic at Lorimer Road and
Blackcomb Way
•
Implement a northbound checkpoint to discourage unnecessary car trips into Whistler during peak
Olympic travel periods, ensuring the timely arrival of Olympic vehicles at venues.
Access for Sea to
Sky residents, guests, and workers that require a vehicle will be maintained.
Details of this
checkpoint are being developed and will be available in summer 2009.
•
Provide equipment and resources to manage incidents
o
Dedicated tow trucks with commercial vehicle and bus towing capabilities on site on the highway
throughout the day
o
Maintenance equipment and materials along the corridor to manage snow clearing and general
road maintenance
o
On-site incident response teams (police, fire, ambulance) to address collisions and other
emergency needs
whats questionable to me is the "access for sea to sky residents that require a vehicle". so that may mean if your going to whislter or passing through whistler they might not let you go unless it is required you go to whistler. if there is potentially alot of traffic going to be on the highway they are going to cater to olympic vehicles making sure they get there on time, the rest may not be able to pass. it shouldn't be a issue for you to get to work or even me, but on the weekends when i want to play it will be a issue. they obviously havent ironed out all the details yet but the bottom line is there will be restrictions accessing the highway.

The thing is the checkpoint is going to be south of whistler, so for people like me living in whistler, I'll be okay using my car in Whistler. The only difference is for people in Pemberton and in squamish that will have to go through these checkpoints, but you will be able to get through for work, if you have olympic tickets and apparently from what i heard if you are going boarding/skiing as well.
Also, the guest portion of that is people coming up to stay in hotels to ski/board or watch the olympics. It's goign to be super restricted for people coming up from vancouver just for the day, as they want people who are coming up just for the day to take the shuttle buses. I think that's where the confusion is.
I talked to my cousin Guilia the other day.. she lives in Torino and was there for the Olympics and absolutely loved every minute of it... she says that they were super worried about how it would affect their lives too, but in the end it ended up beign fun and a big party in town the entire time. Hopefully that's the way it works here!!
