Curious; I've used my finger for many things but telling the
temperature was not one of them. I did develop a particular skill
while I lived in Edmonton however; determining the temperature using my
nose. It basically involved stepping outside, taking a huge
inhale through the nose and counting how long it took for my nostrils
to unstick. I was within 5 degrees celcius of the actual
temperature everytime. The down side of course is that this
technique only works at -10 or colder (which is like 10 months out of
the year in Edmonton).
Mine is an uncommon philosophy accessible to morons and sages alike.

Edmonton weather: At -30 to -35 Celcius you hope the car starts if you forgot to plug in the block heater but Command Start is way better because it's more comfortable that way. You see, at those temperatures the foam in your car seats freeze making them rock solid (those are the cloth seats; I still remember the vinyl seats in my '74 Old Cutlass...crunch).
At -21 to -27 Celcius feels like a typical Edmonton winter day. Snowboarding starts off with the pit zips shut and the helmet vents shut but after a few runs it feels like Hawaii and your stripping. The only thing that sucks is if a wind hits you because the temp feels like it's dropped another 5 degrees and your skin turns red in colour from the onset of frost bite.
At around -10 to 15 Celcius the hills are packed with people and at around the -10 mark I will usually lost the jacket and use either a hoodie or a sweater as the jacket gets too warm.
At -1 to -9 I will take out the garbage, check the mail in a t-shirt. Wearing just a base layer top going down the runs, just don't bail because the rough snow feels like sandpaper on your flesh.
