Hi there Deanna,
Doing a season in the South Island: Queenstown is great, loads to do, loads of nightlife close to three mountains.
Wanaka is one hour up the road, You will meet more friendly chilled out people here, it is smaller and thats brilliant because you get to know more people and better.
Night life is awsome and Wanaka is home to the best mountains in the S.Island. If You get one pass Cardrona offers a good park and pipe but flat constant freeride. If You can get two passes T.C is hands down the best freeride terrain, and Snowpark is expertly facilatated, with the best S.Pipe ever.
Hiching is easy and regarded as the normal thing to do to get up the mountain.
Get there early may for best place to live and work as more competition than options!!
At Snowpark You will regulaly share the lift with top pro's from around the world!
I am trying to get back there myself if I manage to save any wedge!
Have a wicked time

sorry couldnt fit it all in....

as for riding, i went to cardrona, which is a beginners mountain but has an excellent park, and of course snow park, over the road! simply outstanding.
treble cone is where i spent most of my time, most of its un pisted, awesome views..but no park. but you dont need one as there are so many natural hits.
to get up the mountain you need edgewater adventures who can do a season pass for all 3 of the wanaka mountains.

also make sure you hire a campervan and travel around the south island, its stunning. go to milfors sound, lake te anau, hamner springs and the fox and franz josef glaciers.
you can fly to the wanaka airport or queenstown, try air NZ. i flew out of wanaka, and its like getting a free scenic flight
becks
if you need to know anything else, just shout.

hi deanna

wanaka is a beautiful place to stay. accomidation is limited but the town is growing. so book early! there are several hostels and cheap places in the area. i stayed with my boy in a private house. there is a good social scene, small and everyone knows each other.
lots of bars, my two faves, the red rock and fincheys (big sofas and fires)

i would recommend it over queenstown as queenstown is just a drain for money. if you want to go out and large it every night..you want to be in queens town, if you want a different side to it stay in wanaka.

you can get to QT easy, there is a bus and make sure you go for the winter festival and visit minus 5 (a bar made of ice)

go south island for sure!, just better snow, more in the north island and a longer season in the north island, but better, drier snow and more fields to choose from, there is more of a SCENE down there also if you are into that
Never been to Treble myself but cardronas pretty rad, but i hear trebles better for freeriding, snow park is a good idea if you wanna just shred park.
hope any of that helps, hope ya make it there, its a rad place
