Romain Straps it On

Romain de Marchi says: Stop letting the economic crisis paralyze you; don’t listen to the talking heads on TV news; don’t slow down. Your life and the lives of those around you depend on your passion and stoke.

YOU’VE NEVER HEARD ROMAIN DE MARCHI SAY ANYTHING LIKE THIS BEFORE

MAUI, HAWAII – For a moment there I thought I was pondering the intricacies of the Universe, God, and life with Deepak Chopra – the esoteric Indian doctor, author, philosopher – not Romain de Marchi – ball-to-the-walls, huck-myself-down-any-freakin’-thing – snowboard legend.

Prejudiced with images of his suicidal rippings in epic Absinthe films, tabloid sensationalism knocking him as a party freak, and his tattoo covered body, I went into this, our first longer meeting, thinking it would turn out to be another “shoot the shi*t interview” with another fortunate, yet undeserving rider. I got adjusted, hard.

Romain on Travelling

RDM: When I travel I like discovering different philosophies and new cultures. I try to learn more and more the world. TV I don’t think is a good example to learn the world. To me it’s better to be on the terrain and figure out by yourself. That’s what I’m looking for when I go travel: meet new cultures and new people basically.

SWB: How does riding factor into your travels? Can you describe that stoke that you feel?

RDM: Well, I always… when I’m travelling, it’s not really the places you go to, but the experience you share with people. I like the fact that when I go to different resorts, I meet different people and they give me their stoke-ness of wanting to share with me their culture, their mountain and their way of seeing their mountain. That’s what I appreciate a lot when I get to see different places. So, that’s what really stokes me out.

Romain on Fatherhood

SWB: I saw your daughter Annella there. Tell me about her!

RDM: Well, she’s almost 2 years old and she’s growing up by the minute. She’s a fan of Dora as you can see on the T-Shirt and she loves her mama a lot. No, it’s fascinating, I mean, it’s ahhhh, it makes you more mature, makes you go forward in life, to be able to see your kids, the way they interpret life, to see their innocence and their soul. I think it gives you a lot of inspiration! They really inspire me.

SWB: so how did you start to feel in riding after you became a parent? Were there differences in your behavior after you became a parent?

RDM: Yeah, a lot of people said: now that you have a kid your ride should be different, you should be more cautious. Actually for me it went the other way around. I’m more crazy now than before. It really pushed me to go out there and do what I love. Now more than ever, I do it for more and more reason. First it was just for me when I was younger, but now it’s also for my daughter and my kids because I want them to feel my passion and translate that to them, so now I go out there and try to get as stoked as I can, so when I get home they can see how happy I am to do what I love to do and they can feel that. So for me it went the other way around.

SWB: interesting! So she made you live life even more to its fullest?

RDM: Even more.

Romain on the World Economic Recession

RDM: I’m not gonna say it doesn’t affect me. It affects everybody, but, I think that many people live in fear and they’re like “ohhh no, I can’t do this, I can’t do that.” People have been brainwashed with that and they’ve stopped living. I bet if each individual in the world like they did before the crisis, everything would be good, because money would still be spent, people would still be happy and do happy things and the world would still go around. Now everybody is watching TV saying “ohhh no, I can’t do this, because the TV said it’s fear, it’s economic, and it’s the world war, the terrorism and what not…” I think that’s pretty sad that people have been brainwashed like that and have stopped living just because some dude said it on TV. Of course, the economy isn’t as good now, but I think we are as much responsible for it as the people who are leading our country. I think we should keep living and everything is going to be fine.

SWB: ohh man, that’s a great insight. People paralyze themselves by listening to these so-called experts on TV and…

RDM: yeah, it’s been like that for centuries, you know like, create fear so that we can control people. I try to have my own opinion. I know times are hard, but it’s hard for everybody, but you keep living and if you can’t pay the mortgage one day and what not, then well, sell the house and do something else. The world is not going to end just like that. We have many options in life, so it’s not worth worrying about a mortgage or things like that.

Romain on Back Protection and Why Everyone Should Wear One

RDM: For sure it gives you extra confidence. If I hit a rock at least I have the Slytech 2nd Skin to protect my spine.

But I also try not to rely on it too much, because then you forget how your muscles work in your body; they are the first armor, right?

The Slytech 2nd Skin is more prevention. It’s not because I have a back protector that I’m going to launch a bigger thing. Whether I ride the resort or I jump, I always wear it in case something happens. It’s a precaution. It’s not like, “ohhh yeah, I’m just going riding the resorts, so I’m not going to put it on.” No, I put it on anyway.

Whether big jump or not, you know, now that I’m getting older, I got a family, so I kinda need to have that extra protection for me. But I’m not forgetting as well that my body is my first armor. For my state of mind it’s more uhhh… like in a car, you can have one airbag or you can have 5 airbags. Same thing with second skin: I’d rather have more airbags than just 1.

SWB: There are all kind of back protectors out there. What was it about Slytech 2nd Skin to make you choose to use it?

RDM: It’s easy to put on. It’s really comfortable to wear it. The good thing is, the foam they use, it’s really molding your back, so you really don’t feel it. I’ve tried other ones and they’re really uncomfortable. They’ve been using that for dirt biking at first. I feel pretty confident: dirt bikers get more beat up than snowboarders. When they fall, they hit the hard ground! Snow is soft. It makes you feel even better that it’s tested by dirt bike people.

SWB: How were you introduced to the Slytech people?

RDM: What went down is… basically, I got hooked up with Shred and they said, “hey, you want to try the Slytech 2ndSkin?” and I’m like “YEAH SURE!” They sent me some and I went riding and I didn’t feel it. I went riding all day and I didn’t feel it at all, “OK, wow! This is a freakin great product!” You have it on and it’s extra precaution for you and it doesn’t even bother you; it doesn’t even make you uncomfortable when you ride so I was like “yeah right on! This is a great product, so let’s do something with it!”

SWB: Would you recommend a back protector for non-professional athletes?

RDM: Yeah, I would recommend all the protection they can get. Most of the time, beginners just sit on a hump on the slope and if a skier or snowboarder just comes up from behind and BOOM, it could paralyze them. But if you have a back protector, it might save you from that. Helmet, back protectors are key.

As I left that interview, I never thought that I – as a philosophy guy living in Hawaii with all the inspiration I need around me – would have walked away with so much newfound inspiration to go for whatever I could possibly conceive of.

I want to publicly thank Romain de Marchi for sharing the inspiring stoke he collects through his experiences as a shredder, a father, a world traveler and as a free spirit (the snowboarding world’s own mini Deepak). Thanks also for believing in and endorsing the Slytech Back Protector. It took many years to develop and test, and now that it’s available to the general public we hope it will be as universally loved.

About Slytech Protection
The team and riders at Slytech Protection feel that life is best lived with maximum passion, confidence, comfort and protection (comfortable protection). We’re based around a rider's love for shredding and being free, to keep pushing the limits and to give yourself the chance to get up and ride again. Being sidelined with a bad spinal injury is the last thing we want, and so comfortable back protection is the first thing we grab.

My Blog: Whistler
By: goodgirl13

Things I learned at Whistler

1) Basic Human Anatomy
----I have an ass.  It's bony.  Falling on it...well...yeah...

2) I want a Canadian husband
---- I didn't know this before I left, but I'm pretty positive of it now.

3) Flexibility is a gift
---- You know that feeling you have when your board goes over your head twice
one fall?  Yeah, so do I.

4) British Columbia needs to lower the drinking age
     ---- Well...it does.

5) Snowboarding is LOVE
---- Alright, so I knew that before I left.  I've just reaffirmed it.

I miss you guys!

New Seymour Partysnake edit

Matt Heneghan just uploaded this new Seymour Partysnake edit laced to some CNN.

Silver, Bronze, Gold, youngbrownwalsh and a fishburger.

IS Team Rider BRad Martin sent me this photo of himself on the podium with a Silver Medal around his neck at the recent world cup event held at Stoneham. Yeah Brad!

New IS team rider Janelle Pritchard (No relation to "Dean Pritchard" from the movie Oldschool) got some podium action of her own up at Whistler this weekend receiving Bronze at the Showdown. Good work Janelle! Don't blow all that loot on some fancy radio.

Hey Dave found the gold. Follow this link to a low res version of the YoungBrownWalsh vid he found on our other bud Dave's site.

Call with Kale: Kale gave me a call Sunday afternoon to share his excitement about trying out the new fishburger at Wendy's. He was like "they're using the good fish now, some delicious Alaska code or something". Then he let me go so he could place his order. I decided to call him back Today to see if the fishburgers lived up to the hype. Kale ensured me that they did and stated the new fish burgers at Wendy's actually tasted like some delicious type of fish burger you'd find at a high end fish and chips spot. I felt good about the conversation and let him go.

Another Catalog shoot / Another Slide Show

Dice K and Kenta came by the office yesterday to kick off our 09/10 catalog shoot. I actually just stole the photo above from Dice K's blog where you can read all about it in his Dec 1st post.

I've been trying to free up some room on my computer the last couple days and have been finding tons of gems. The photo above is from our TWO DEADLY TOUR a couple years back.

I decided to say heck with working this morning and took off for the mtn!!!  15 minutes into my journey to make first chair I realized I had forgotten to grab my Season's Pass..  There went first chair..  At least I realized it before I got to the mtn.. Laughing..

When I finally made it to the mountain there wasn't a whole lot of people there.. PERFECT! I flashed my riding clothes on in record time and off to the chair I went..  Let the havoc begin.. I searched out any sorta fluff I could find.. After a couple of quick test runs to reacquaint myself with the board I'd brought I hopped into the trees.. Ooo I found FLUFF!   AND all sorts of hidden "treasures!"   Tree stumps, rocks, roots Ooo my!  Laughing..  Good thing I can bend like gumby..

2 hours into my seek and destroy fluff mission I heard the music of my cell over the music of my ipod..   Drat my vehicle for ratting me out..  Now I could pretend not to have heard it but since I'm not good about making up missed calls I answered..   I get a "Hey Doll meet us at the park".. Hmmm.. Now I could pretend they were breaking up and I couldn't hear them.. Then go back to my seek and destroy fluff mission.   Alas I'm not good at acting either.. Soo I   s_l_o_w_l_y   made my way to the park.. I told myself the WHOLE WAY I was just going to watch them have at the rails.. I was just going to watch!  Yeah uh huh right.. And into the trap I fell..  I'd ask where my brains went but alas they were still in my head fully intact..

All my friends know I don't like to ride rails (back during my halfpipe competition days I saw a kid break his jaw on a rail.. Lots of blood..).. And to give my friends credit they never push me to ride the rails nor give me crap about it.. However there wasn't only rails in Birch Park.. There was a 25' culvert..  And there spelled my doom..   "Come on Doll you can ride that".. "Look it's easy"..   Ooo they definitely made it look easy.. And the nifty little tricks they were all pulling.. Looked fun..  DUMB DUMB DUMB DUMB BLONDE!  I jumped up with a feeling of WOOHOO.. Charged that sucker.. I was sliding and feeling elated that I was going to make it.. Got 3/4 of the way through it (with my teeth chattering the whole way) and next thing I knew I was taking a snow sample..  The only comment I heard was a snickered "Want me to kiss it and make it better"..

I swear to God they set me up..

After all systems were checked and found to be in good working order.. The dumb blonde that I am tried again..  And took another snow sample, and another and another.. But you know what.. I finally made it!  Laughing.. Take that BOYS!

I made them buy me lunch..

I had a great time on the snow.. I can't wait until it starts dumping..

Im sorry dave. Ok, is that all you wanted to hear? I'm sorry. I'm sorry for being a bitch.  I'm sorry for the things i said.  I'm sorry it has to be like this.  Yeah, I feel bad for what I said.  But I meant every word, and i'm sticking to it.  Dave, I like you, and im always gonna.  I may move on.  No, I will move on.  Im gonna date other guys.  But you, you'll still be in my mind each and every day.  Ill still be in love with you, ill always be in love with  you.  Im never going to forget about you.  When were 30 dave, ill still remember you.  The times we had, me and you both will never forget.  Dave, your gonna see other people too.  Youll move on too, if you havent already. Who knows.  But in the end, youll realize its me.  Its me your in love with, its me you wanna be with.  So when i said im done waiting for you i mean im done for now.  Im done playing the game.  But ill always be waiting forever for you to realize.  I dont care how long it takes, but youll see it one day.  I know you will.  And when that day comes, ill be done waiting.

My Journal: New Season
By: leer13

I am impatiently waiting for the new season to arrive!  All we need is snow, but the weather is just not cooperating.  In the slightest!  Damn - it's hard to look at bare, brown mountains that should be covered with snow!

And the season is supposed to start on December 5.  Good luck - we need about 5 feet (1.6 m) of snow between now and then.

In the mean time, all I can do is spend money and keep hoping!

So far this year I have bought my fav skier a new set of fat skis and some bindings to go with them.

I have bought a set of Flow M-11 bindings for myself.

And I am awaiting the arrival of a Never Summer Premier F1 in a 165 cm length.

Oh yeah - I am all over winter arriving as soon as possible!!

So, I have had this miserable cold for three weeks.  I feel better for a few days and then BAM I am flat on my back snuggling with a box of Kleenex again.

I was supposed to go to the movies on Saturday evening with this guy, we have been out as "friends" a couple of times and I am not sure if I even like him as a friend (real arrogant, u know?).  So, I relapsed on Friday and called him to let him know that I was in no condition to go anywhere - spare the rest of humanity my virulent cooties, eh?

He gets all worked up about it, "have you tried anything?" I respond, "What do you mean tried anything?"

Irate answer, "Like tea, aromatherapy, orange juice, blah blah blah."

Now, I am a little annoyed at this point b/c I am sick and have been on and off for three weeks, OF COUSE I HAVE TRIED EVERYTHING SHORT OF GOING TO THE DOCTOR WHERE THEY WILL TELL ME THAT IT JUST HAS TO RUN ITS COURSE AND I WILL BE 30.00 DOLLARS THE POORER!

My socially correct response was, " I have tried everything that I can think of, sometimes it just takes some time to get completely well.  I apologize for the inconvenience and hopefully we can meet again sometime soon."

His answer, "Yeah, Sure, I will call you." in a surly tone of voice.

Now, here is what I am thinking, what gal in her right mind would want to be with this insensitive douche bag.  Is it too much to say, "I am disappointed that you aren't feeling well, get better and we will do something when you are feeling better."??????

Soo, I have had a blissfully alone weekend and am feeling well enough to go for a hike today :-)  I hope everyone else stays well and enjoys their weekend!

Duff's Bday Party at the Molson Brewery! Rep of the Month.

Duff celebrated his 19th Birthday at the Molson brewery this weekend. Here's some of the action I captured in between the many free pints of frosty cold Coors Light.

What a great time. Free beer, pizza and front row seats to the Duff and friends flex off. Martins called it about 20 minutes before it happened.

Even Tom Lee from POP printing made an appearance. Above he closely inspects the print quality of Duff's head.

Rep of the Month:
Rep of the month for October goes to Benny Couves for his feat of extreme office boydom with a pickled ollie at the Tofino park.

Yeah Couves! You win the left over Coors Light from our Monster Sale located in the mini fridge at Trustus.

Russia, I’ve always wanted to go there!! And here I am, landing in Sochi designated host of the 2014 Olympic games. The small airport stands by the black sea and I m quite surprised to see palm trees through the plane window.. We made our way through the taxi drivers  scrum, chose one of them by the size of his car and drove up towards Krasnaya Polyana.. It s a 45 minutes drive.. this place looks like a remote and small European resort.. but 40 years ago. Oakley is always a fun crew! Grete Eliassen, Gretchen Bleiler, Angeline who has missed her flight, Marie-France Roy who had some visa issues and will arrive a couple of days later and I.

The lift is sketchy!! You sit on that red metal 2 seater chairlift while the chairlift guy holds it by handcraft for 1 second.. your board on your knees as well as your backpack, gloves, ipod etc.. you are hanging about 40 or 60m off the ground and the lift makes weird noises.. or stops and runs the wrong direction for 10 seconds.. the way out is even sketchier! Same thing, the guy grabs the chair and you have 1 second to jump off and run with your gear in your hands…

Everywhere nearby the chairlift you can find some tough Russian body guards.. they looked scary.. but Gretchen got them to be our friends by getting them into our photo albums! So everyday.. they looked just mean and tough.. but when we showed up, they gave us their biggest smiles.. with hardly any teeth appearing or maybe a couple golden ones..

Never mind, it’s sunny and the snow looks epic.. but it’s really warm.. and yep it has been really warm and sunny a full day already, you should have been there YESTERDAY! It looked like fun hot pow but my board got glued so hard to the ground that I couldn’t even turn or keep my nose up! That snow was pretty much the worst you can get! No way to work it.. and worst was to come.. it rained for a week.

And still we went up and got a couple of jibs done.. there was no water in the house (no showers) but all was good..  cause the girls were soo fun to hang out with! While the skiers were building a wall ride, Gretchen and I took the lift to the top.. Super sketchy avalanches went down on the whole mountain! Wett heavy huge avalanches all over the place..  but the top stayed good.. cause it was just cold enough to keep it together.. That night we decided to drink it blue witch is an easy thing to do in Russia.. Anna showed Gretchen and I a couple breakdance moves, I painted on Shin’s face while Marie-France was holding him and thanks to Grete who puked that night cause it worked and got sunny the next day!

It had snowed and blown quite a bit on the very top.. and that was our chance to make it happen.. we hiked 2 bowls behind the top chairlift and found a couple lines, slashes and cliffs… the snow was super fun in the shady spots.. I was stoked to finally get to ride! And to slash pow YEAH!! The last run down was soo fun!! And then we had to traverse for about an hour and hike another hour to get back to the slopes.. it was  close to dark, all lifts were closed and there were both of Grete’s fans!! Waiting for her to appear out of the woods. What a good day!! It s funny how 1 good day makes it up for ten bad ones.

That was our last night in the mountains and we all went to the Russian Sauna to get  naked and beaten with branches by a Russian type of Tarzan!! The best thing ever!

We left to Moscow the next day and that was super fun too! The Red Square was on my to see list.. pretty mind blowing!  Thanks to Oakley, Shin, Anna and Marie for making this trip a trip to remember!

My Journal: October Sessions
By: perrik

Well, unfortunately the website is still having some of it's hiccups and I can't upload pics to my galleries. Let's see if I can paste them in my post.

Session #1: Arapahoe Basin (10/18/08) The first session of the season! And now in Colorado! Awesome! Regularly I'll be doing this the first weekend of November in the Midwest and driving 2 and a half hours to Ski Brule for just one run of 20 sec. Here it was a nice 75 min drive and the run at A-Basin, was like 3 times the one at Marquette. I mean it was just one run but it will take me 4 to 6 minutes to get down! I was there for first chair and the first 3 runs I got in the singles lines without waiting at all. There probably was around 1,000 people in the first 3 hours but that number easily increased to 3,000 by 11:30. The second wave brought too many beginners falling in the middle of the run, the snow was tracked and with icy spots and the wait on the lift line was about 10 to 15 min... So I took my 8 runs and went home a happy rider after a good first session.
