Mammoth Mountain Unbound Terrain Parks Undergo Big Improvements in Preparation for 2008/09 Winter Season

Mammoth Mountain, CA – Although it is Mid-August and there are no signs of snow on the ground, the Unbound Park Crew is as busy as ever preparing for the upcoming season.  In keeping with its vision of creating the best terrain parks in the world, Mammoth Mountain has made $750,000 in capital investments including improved grading and expansion of current terrain, new “Adventure Zones,” enhanced snowmaking and two brand-new Piston Bully 400 Park Bully Snowcats.

Leading off the improvements for the upcoming season is the massive amount of grading and shaping being done to enhance the existing terrain in Unbound Main.  25,000 cubic yards of dirt are being moved which doubles the useable area of Thunder Road, the site of Lower Unbound Main Park.  With the addition of this new terrain, the Unbound Park Crew will have more freedom than ever to create the best jump and jib setups possible.

Another big change for the upcoming season is the enhanced snowmaking capabilities for the Superpipe and Unbound Main Terrain Park.  Instead of simply adding new water and air pipes into the ground, Mammoth Mountain decided to recycle underutilized snowmaking systems that were already in place to create a more efficient layout.  “We thought it was more environmentally friendly to rearrange what we already had with better placement and layout, rather than putting more metal in the ground,” said Oren Tanzer, Director of Youth Action Sports Marketing at Mammoth Mountain.  “This will allow us to have the best selection of features and an earlier opening of Mammoth’s world-famous Superpipe.”

Mammoth Mountain prides itself on offering terrain parks for every level of rider to allow for smooth progression from beginners to seasoned professionals.  With this in mind, Mammoth Mountain is excited to announce the addition of four new “Adventure Zones” to complement their Family Fun Parks.  These new runs will be fun tracks built into the trees featuring a variety of berms, rollers and small bumps.  “For years, the Ski and Snowboard School and Race Team kids have been exploring these ‘secret spots.’ We just decided to share these well kept secrets with all our guests in the hope that everyone will have more fun,” said Finlay Torrence, Director of Eagle Lodge Ski and Snowboard School at Mammoth Mountain.  “Adventure Zones” will be located near Disco Park, Forest Trail Park, Wonderland Park and Eagle Express Lift.

Rounding out the list of major improvements for the Unbound Terrain Parks will be the addition of multiple new jibs for the 2008/09 season, some of which are signature features for Vans and Dragons to complement the popular 2007/08 Quiksilver signature jib – a large skate-inspired pyramid made of 100% steel and coated in clear Lexan plastic.  Mammoth Mountain is consistently ranked as having some of the best terrain parks in the world by multiple industry publications and these new additions reinforce the commitment Mammoth Mountain puts into its world-famous Unbound Terrain Parks year after year.

The Mammoth Mountain Unbound Terrain Parks lead the industry in innovation and quality with seven parks, three pipes, 65+ jibs and 50+ jumps on 90 acres of California’s favorite mountain resort. Using state-of-the-art equipment to provide a progressive environment for all levels, from beginners to a team of 13 professional athletes, the Unbound earns consistent ratings among the top parks of the world. WHISTLER GETS SET TO SPOTLIGHT BIGGEST TALENTS IN MUSIC, SPORTS AND ARTS, APRIL 11-20

Preparations underway to ready Whistler for

13th TELUS World Ski and Snowboard Festival

WHISTLER, BC, April 10, 2008 –

The TELUS World Ski and Snowboard Festival’s unique fusion sports, music and arts gets underway April 11 in Whistler and operations crews are busy getting the resort ready for ten days and nights of non-stop events and entertainment.

In the Village, where 11cm of snow fell earlier in the week to freshen up the 265cm base, 10 tonnes of scaffolding is being set up to build viewing platforms, the Pontiac Battle of the Bands stage, and the Outdoor Concert Series Main Stage, where headline acts De La Soul, Lil’Jaz, The John Butler Trio, Blackalicious, The Trews, Ill Scarlett, Daniel Wesley, Julian Marley and Michael Franti & Spearhead will perform free concerts daily from 2:30pm.

On the mountain, 3 different competition venues are being constructed, providing elite level features to showcase the world’s best skiers and snowboarders. The Big Air (finals taking place at the base of Whistler, April 12, 8pm) will feature a brand new design, with a 65 foot step-over gap jump that Whistler Blackcomb Events Manager, YP (Peter) Young says, “will allow the riders to go higher and farther than ever before.”

In addition, the 500 foot long Superpipe has been rebuilt to feature sheer 20 foot walls that will see riders and skiers at the April 16-19 competition gain maximum amplitude.

The Chief of Course for the Big Air and the Superpipe, master park-builder Steve Petrie, is also the designer and builder of the 2010 Olympic Halfpipe.

With Whistler Blackcomb’s talented crew of groomers and pipe builders logging more than 350 hours on the venues, and more than 7 million gallons of water pumped through the system by the snowmaking team, the Superpipe and Big Air jump will be ready to draw the best performances from over 200 skiers and snowboarders from around the world.

Saturday, April 12 will also see Blackcomb Mountain host the resurrected Orage Masters, a slopestyle contest that features the hottest skiers in the new school world, on a course designed by pro athlete, Vernon lad, TJ Schiller and built by a Whistler Blackcomb team under the guidance of park builder extaordinaire, Marty Gautrey.

Sporting events with a non-stop mind-blowing soundtrack is not all that’s in store at the thirteenth TELUS World Ski and Snowboard Festival.

The event’s artistic side has been nurtured over previous years, with 10,000 tickets available in a showcase of mountain culture, from Icon Gone, a debate about whether the best of Whistler is history (April 13), to the Schick Extreme 3 Fashion Exposed (April 18), to the theatre performance of The Chairlift Revue (April 20).

The Festival’s multi-media visual feasts, the Olympus Pro Photographer Showdown (April 17), the D250 Filmmaker Showdown and Second Cuts Screening (April 15-16), and the world premiere of mountain bike film Seasons (April 11), guarantee that every seat feels front and centre to capture the action with the ground-breaking multimedia installation, currently being constructed.

The 6-sided screen, dubbed “the Borg”, is being installed by a 10 person team at Rocky Mountain Productions, with 900 foot of truss, 7 miles of cable, and a total amplification of sound of 55,000W. (That’s nearly 800 times the sound of your home stereo, according to the godfather of the installation, Scott McPhee.)

The Borg will then be struck down to make room for the Festival’s finale, the DJ Experience, featuring DJ Dan and Donald Glaude, Mark Farina and Mat the Alien, ensuring that the party doesn’t end when the sun goes down, April 19.

175 pieces of original art from leading street artists around the world are being hung in the 10,000 square foot gallery foyer of the TELUS Conference Centre, for the urban art exhibit, Brave Art, April 11-18. The exhibit receptions on April 12 and 13 will feature live painting from over 40 artists.

Whistler is a hive of activity, preparing the resort for ten days and nights of non-stop events and entertainment, that will turn Whistler into ground zero for the biggest celebration of mountain life, starting tomorrow.

The level of skill being displayed in all of the Whistler Blackcomb Parks is astonishing these days. The progression we are seeing in athletes is at light speed and tricks formerly reserved for the rare mutants are now being thrown with ease by local kids skipping school to ski and ride. (Don’t skip school!) This week I witnessed 16-year-olds throwing double back flips, 19-year-olds spinning corked 10s and a 4-year-old slide a four foot round bar. This progression has pushed the Park crew to step up and create the best possible playground for these athletes and then work backwards to ensure we have a smooth progression. The bar is being set high for the next generation and we are doing our best to evolve at the same rate.

The Parks all got new set-ups this week, some even seeing changes daily. On Whistler Mountain we changed up the top section to include a new barrel bonk in addition to the stump jibs as well as freshening up Bobcat with a never-been-tired-before combo box with a quad kink. There are also new jump styles on Chipmunk and two “Skate Style” spines with log and metal coping for every transfer trick imaginable.

The Choker Park saw the addition of the Quicksilver and Nintendo boxes set up in series as mellow up-boxes as well as the addition of a mini shack booter style step over jump. The Superpipe rebuild has resulted in the best pipe I have ridden in a long time and special props go out to Andy Morrison for his epic 17 hour shift grooming the pipe se we can all rip it this week!

The Terrain Garden continues to be one of the busiest parks with hordes of newbie riders getting their legs on the small jumps, mini spine, boxes and rails offered up in this line. We are hoping to add a few more basic flat boxes to the mix so trick development can progress here too.

The HL Park has basically been split into Lucas Land’s rail line for metal grinders and the main park for jumpers. The left line continues to be the BIG XL line while the right side offers up the L / XL multi-takeoff options.

If you have not been up in the parks yet this year, you are missing out! Don’t wait to see it in next year’s vids, come on up today.

Hello People, Sorry this is a very late blog I wrote it like one and a half months ago but according to the Snowboard.com website problems and the problems with my broken Computer I couldn’t post it earlier. Sorryy, but here it still comes. I hope you are all enjoying a good summer wherever you are. Since my last blog where I reported about my last few days in school a lot happened in my life. At first, when summer school vacation started I spent a few days at home to have time with my familie and then I went on holiday to Croatia with my girlfriend Tine and my friend and Isenseven Crewmate Peter König. We had a pretty good time there, a lot of sun, good food, snorkling or just enjoying in the sun to get some Energy for our snowboard trip to New Zealand one week later. Here a few pictures I made in Croatia with my new cellphone Nokia N95 which O2 offered me to picture my trips. Peter and me... rollin Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket Ocean Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket Peter Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket Porec Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket Love Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket After Croatia I had just 2 days back at home to get my stuff done and pack my luggage for New Zealand. Then I went to Munich for my first real Concert in the famous „Atomic Cafe“ Bar, the Band was called „Voxtrot“ from Texas United States and it was just amazeing to watch them playing the tunes. Then the last day before our Flight left, I went surfing with Marco Smolla at the „Eisbach“ river in the centre of Munich. So much fun, there is a big Wave in the middle of the city. It was pretty hard for me the first time but it was real fun. At the next morning, Marco Smolla, Andre Kuhlmann, Peter König and me checked in at Munich Airport. After our last Weißbier and Weißwurst at the Airport Restaurant, we entered our Airplane and left Bavaria. On our trip we stopped at 4 different Airports and one gas station to get to our final destination. According to this 2 day long journey we where pretty excited to move our sore bodies and go Snowboarding. Thanks to Marco and Jorma, that they managed everything about the house and rental car before we got here. The mountain where we always ride here is called Snowpark, it’s one hill consisting of one huge Snowboard Park. With a Superpipe, Quarterpipe, a bigger Jump Line and 2 smaller jib lines on each side with different Obstacles, boxes, rails and smaller jumps. Riding there in summer to work on your snowboard skills for the season without any preasure. Snowpark Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket We are here for a peride of three weeks. From now on we have one week left. One day we made a trip to the Western Coast of the country which was very exciting, we had barbecue on the beach with our friends from Switzerland and got a view of New Zealand great Landscape. After that we played some Golf to relax after this crazy jump. And in the Evening we played some Tennis. This was my favourite day of this trip so far. Fischi the Phographer and Photo Editor from Pleasure Snowboard Magazin just arrived today. So we will focus the next days shooting with him to get some snowboard photos. Heading up to Whistler, and shooting in the Blackcomb HL Park for five days.  Super stoked on that.  Apparently the weather has sucked up there, and the Park was closed to an MSP shoot the past week or so, as welll the superpipe had a tree in it (or so I heard) and was closed...
Ohwell should still be fun to mess around in the other parks!

ATHLETES HAVE UNTIL MARCH 8 TO THROW THEIR NAME IN THE RUNNING FOR A SPOT IN THE WHISTLER COMPETITIONS

TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival’s Canadian MVP will win inaugural Pontiac Peak Performer Award and a hot new ride

WHISTLER, BC, February 23 2007 –

For 10 days in April, skiers & snowboarders will gather for five competitions and the classic end to an incredible season in Whistler.

Snowboarders and skiers will again join forces for the 2007 TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival, with the Old Spice World Snowboarding Classic and the World Skiing Invitational taking place simultaneously April 12 - 21.

Over 150 riders and skiers will take on the Stompede, Rail Session, Superpipe and TWO Big Air competitions throughout the festival week. In addition to $100,000 in cash & prizes on the line, athletes will be motivated to go big by the opportunity to win the inaugural Pontiac Peak Perfomer Award and the keys to a brand new Pontiac G5 GT.

The Canadian skier or rider who out-spins, out-jumps and out-grinds their competitors across four events and receives the most votes at the on-site Pontiac display will receive the Peak Performer award and will squeal out of town in a slick, black Pontiac G5 GT after the April 21 Big Air.

A newly introduced lottery format will give the opportunity for emerging athletes to secure a spot in the World Skiing Invitational and Old Spice World Snowboarding Classic competitions, so fresh contenders can mix it up with established pros and previous champions.

Athlete Manager Lindsay O’Brien said, “Uniting pros and amateurs through a mixture of invitational and open fields makes the festival an event for all levels of riders.  It provides an exciting opportunity for up & comers to size up their skills against the pros and help to launch their competitive careers and have a ton of fun in the process.”

Between now and March 8, athletes can go to www.whistler2007.com to request an invitation or enter the lottery.  Confirmed competitor lists will be announced on March 12.

My Journal: Girls Gone Wild
By: Jesgirl

"Last year was more about polishing than progressing. Instead of learning new tricks, we focused on dialing the ones we already had. It was something we had to do. The world isn't tuning in to watch people fall at the Olympics."—Gretchen Bleiler, Olympic Silver medalist and two-time Winter X superpipe winner.

If the 2006 snowboard competition season would have taken place in the world of fashion, it's safe to say that serious was last year's theme. Since the Olympics have come and gone, however, the '07 season's runway hit will be evolution as the new black, and accessorizing with fun will be the latest handbag.

After spending the last couple years (rather than seasons, as those have lost their bearing in lieu of transcontinental, year-round riding) perfecting pipe runs with technical-trick-combos most-likely to score Olympic gold, the ladies of pipe have decided that it's time to loosen up a bit—setting their sights on goals other than winning.

"Girl's pipe events last season were a battle of the frontside nines," says two-time Olympian and seven-time X Games competitor, Natasza Zurek. "She who did hers the best that day would win. It was a natural response to judging criteria. Torah Bright had the most creative runs, but she was often penalized because they lacked a 900."

Judging criteria in competition, being largely bureaucratic and thus a slower-moving beast, have never been able to keep up with the progression of snowboarding, and controversy over which tricks score higher and lower, and why, is an old story. Breaking news this year, however, is that more girls will be putting behind them the stress that comes with pleasing the judges. This time around, winning or losing isn't as big a concern as making a mark by trying new things—pushing aside the "safe" skill sets in the name of boosting expectations for female riding.

"When you focus so strongly on something, it's nice to take step back to change your perspective," says Gretchen of her outlook of the upcoming season. "If I keep trying to win contests with the run that I have, eventually, I'll fall behind. Instead, I am going to huck myself more, fall more, and probably not win as much. But this is what I need to do to get to the next level."

So what does this mean for this winter? Anything goes. Not only will we see new tricks, combos and carnage in the Winter X pipe, but there's a chance that some pipe-only beauties, like Gretchen, may branch out and try their hands at slopestyle, too.

"Slopestyle is easy and fun," says Janna Meyen, reigning slopestyle queen and the first X Games athlete ever to four-peat. "You need so much board control to be a good pipe rider, where you can fake that in slopestyle. Plus, slope doesn't have the same hype around it. There are no coaches or quick tunes at the top of the course." Slope riders are on their own.

"Slopestyle requires balls and confidence much more than it requires technique," adds Gretchen. "Halfpipe is like golf—you can't just swing as hard as you can. I actually used to be better at just hitting jumps, and I feel like this is the case for most riders. That's what drew me to pipe in the first place—it was a real challenge. I'm not the type of person who wants to be good at only one thing. I've always pushed myself in all areas of snowboarding."

Will the pipe masters be able to unseat the slope dominators anytime soon? They contend that that's not the goal. "I like to mix things up and push myself in different ways," says Elena Height, who along with Torah, regularly competes in both pipe and slope. "I compete in slopestyle do something different. It keeps snowboarding fun."

"Slopestyle challenges me," agrees Torah. "I don't focus on beating anyone, I want to be a good all-around rider."

Even so, "If there were ever a year for another woman to take me out, this would be it," says Janna, who is looking into this year's Winter X with a mindset similar to her pipe-girl counterparts. "I've always held back at the X Games, throwing down safety runs, doing tricks I know I'll land, not grabbing. I want to get out of my comfort zone this year. But by doing so, I'll be opening the door big-time for mistakes, and for others to smoke me!"

Happy New Year!

Feeling pretty burned out right now after putting some serious miles on my legs/body.  Rode Friday at big white with Tori.  Pretty standard day really.  Went to Rakkel's at the end of teh day for drinks and some pizza before heading back to spend yet another night on Amber's air mattress.

Got up early Saturday and drove to Silver Star to meet up with Rob.  Perfect weather and pretty awesome day.  The highlights were the monster rollers off the 6-pack and the garbage can bonks in the park.  Never seen a park feature like that so we had a pretty fun time on those.  Spent the night at Amber's after watching the game at Baxters in Kelowna.

Sunday hit up Biggie with Tori, Amber, and Robby.  The park was perfect.  So were the log jibs and tree bonks in the black forest glades.  Tori hit the funboxes for the first time which I was pretty stoked to see.  Also did some fun rips through the superpipe.  Rode the uninc again and decided I'm going to keep it around for days like these.

Today was kind of the shi*ts.  Woke up pretty tired and sore and headed to biggie where it was cold, windy, and foggy.  Met up with Keith and Jana for some cruisers.  Did about 5 runs and a couple of park laps before calling it quits.  I'm beat.

Now I have about 2 weeks worth of stomp updates to do.  Good thing I have nothing going on this week...

Montreal, QC –  An accomplished artist, a skater, and national snowboard champion. These are all virtues on Thomas Wolf’s resume. As an artist, his mediums are photography, acrylics, abstract prints and 3D renderings. He competes in Superpipe, Slopestyle and Boardercross. Amazing indeed.  But what is even more amazing about Thomas Wolf is that he does all this despite being legally blind.

He was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa when he was 10, by age 25 he was deemed legally blind because of his narrow visual field and nightblindness.

Wolf credits his wife Kimberly Nga, for inspiring him to reclaim his snowboarding habit in recent years. He says, “When Kimberly and I first met, she really wanted to try riding. We went boarding a couple of times, and she was hooked. Because this was a sport that we both loved and I had previously lost, she really encouraged me to push myself. I rode and practiced switch and using what vision I had more efficiently as she learned the basics. It was meant to be, so much so, that we spent our honeymoon at Whistler/Blackcomb for opening weekend.” Wolf has not only reclaimed his passion for the sport, but has found Liquid Boardwear, Dragon Alliance, and Never Summer to sponsor him.

Last year at the USASA Nationals, Thomas dominated coming 1st in the Freestyle Men’s Adaptive Division. This included a gold in Boardercross, silver in slopestyle, and bronze in super pipe. He is focused to repeat his success. This season should be one helluva ride.

Liquid Boardwear is super excited to have Thomas join the team. His positivity and creativity is truly inspiring. Words can not explain how amped we are to be supporting Thomas and his endeavors. He rocks.

LOS ANGELES - ESPN Winter X Games 11 announces new sports, new athletes and more coverage going into the eleventh annual event. In addition to Skiing and Snowboard and ESPN‚s announcement last month of Snowmobile Freestyle being added to the sports lineup, Winter X Games 11 will include its first ever disabled discipline, Mono Skier X. First introduced as a demo event at Winter X Games Nine, this year‚s event will be modeled after Winter X mainstays, Skier X and Snowboarder X. It will feature the top 16 disabled men and women racing in individual sit-skis in heats of four. Snowboarding will add the discipline of Snowboard Best Trick Showdown, and Moto X will not be in the Winter X Games lineup but remain a pillar in summer and international events. Fifteen hours of live programming on ESPN and ABC will be offered as well as Winter X Games 11 coverage on ESPN International, EXPN.com, ESPN Classic, ESPN360, SportsCenter and ESPN2‚s X Center.

“As we move into the eleventh Winter X Games, we couldn‚t be more excited with our lineup of sports and the new group of athletes we have participating with Snowmobile Freestyle and Mono Skier X,” said Ron Semiao, senior vice president, ESPN Original Entertainment. “We are dedicated to bringing a variety of original and compelling content to the sports fans and confident with these sport additions we will do so at Winter X Games 11.”

The annual Winter X Games is the premier action winter sports event in the world and showcases more than 250 of the world‚s top athletes including 28 Olympians who competed in last year‚s Winter X Games 10 prior to traveling to Turin, Italy. In addition to Snowboard SuperPipe (added in 1998), the Olympics added Snowboard Boardercross an event that has been part of Winter X Games since the beginning. Last month, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced that Skicross, known as Skier X in the Winter X Games, would be added to the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver. Skier X was introduced to Winter X Games in 1998 with 30 competitors and was the first competition of its kind for the sport of skiing.

Buttermilk Mountain at Aspen/ Snowmass will continue to host the Winter X Games through 2010. Winter X Games 11 is scheduled for Jan 25-28, 2007 with free entrance to the public.
