This month kicked off with some awesome snow and cold winter conditions. We had some excellent fresh powder riding for April fools day thanks to some short hikes into the high alpine. We are currently in the middle of the World Ski and Snowboard Festival here in Whistler which means lots of free bands in the village and world class snowboard competitions.

Local Camp News

At camp things are starting to slow down a little with only onr more week of programs for the winter calendar. That doesn't mean that we are slowing down as we are busy preparing for summer with our new NZ trip (Which is happening in September) as well as summer camp training in June and July. If you are keen to come out to Whistler the you can now book for new winter for our freestyle and freeride snowboard instructor training. If you would like to come to NZ you can check out the information on-line at

Cooler Magazine

Keep an eye out for Cooler Magazine on the shelves at your local news agent. Cherry from http://www.coolermag.com was just out at camp three weeks ago to check us out and write a story about our programs. They are a womens snow, surf and lifestyle magazine out of Europe which is an alternative lifestyle haven for young women.

New Zealand 'World Trip'

If you have ever dreamed about snowboarding in New Zealand and would like to come with our Pro Ride limited numbers adult (18+) improvement camp please let us know - there are now 10 spots available for our 8 and 11 day trip to Wanaka NZ (Middle Earth for those who have watched Lord of the Rings) - the date is set for September 6th. We have 4 star comfortable accommodations with a gym, heated pool and bbq area so when we are off the slopes we will be living in style. We are also going to partake in some jet boating, bungee, snowmobiling and heliskiing for those who are keen as optional extras.

Camper News

Our most recent Level 1 and 2 candidates all dominated their exams with above standard being a common thread for many of the results sheets. We had a huge party at the end of March with many of the long term campers finishing up for the winter. Most of the crew have decided to stay in town and ride until the end of the April and make the most of the excellent snow conditions.

Coach News

A couple of weekends ago the Canadian Nationals half pipe competition was on down in Vancouver at Cypress Mountain. Crispin, Ryan and Neil all went down for the event and came 4th, 6th and 9th. Katie went down to represent the women and came 12th. In other coach news Dylan is still slaving away on the house he is building down in Squamish and is planning on heading east for the summer to build log homes. Duncan was in Toronto with his girlfriend and jsut got back. Lisa and Luke are planning on heading down to Mt Buller in Australia for the summer snow sliding season and Ants L is hanging in Whistler for the summer and playing golf.

Mountain News

As most of the world’s ski resorts close for winter 07-08, Whistler has announced more than two months of its long snowsports season is still ahead. Skiing and riding on Whistler Mountain will continue until April 20th. Spring skiing then continues on Blackcomb Mountain from Monday, April 21 through to Sunday, June 8th. After that the Blackcomb glacier is open for summer snow sports.

The resort currently has a snow base of 265cm and will have 3,000 to 2,500 acres remaining open for May and the first week of June.

Blackcomb Mountain will also debut a new terrain park through to the end of May in the Jersey Cream area. Opening on April 21st, it will feature a mix of small, medium as well as large jibs and jumps built for the Orage Masters.

January 21, 2008

This Past Saturday, Snow Valley hosted the first stop of the Smith Grudge Match V. The event went off! Lots of good riders of all ages both male and female were in attendance. The weather was beautiful and the park was solid thanks in part to Trevor Jennings who spent days and nights getting the park just right for the competition. The competition was strong and Jamie took out every sucka that stood in his way on the way to the finals. In the finals the competition was fierce and the final had to go to a 4th and final run to decide the outcome. Jamie fought hard, but was narrowly beat out. Still, Jamie took home another 2nd place finish and automatically advances to the finals of the Smith Grudge Match V on Feb 23rd at Mt. St. Louis. The announcing and the MCing was off the chains with L.S. and his DJ spinning live on the one’s and two’s all day. Defending Smith Grudge Match champion, Kevin Scriver, was ripping up the park all day, and the only thing that prevented a repeat of last year's finals showdown was an attempted hand plant on the top of the wall ride that went bad for Kevin. Kevin went up, planted his hand which then slipped out sending Kevin crashing down onto his head. Good thing helmets are mandatory at the comp! Will Johnson was out ripping and put together a solid second run. Trevor Jennings, not only built the park, he was competing too, Trev made the finals but working on the event and riding in the event was tiring for T.J. and he laid down after an attempted on the wall ride. Give the guy a break, he needed a rest. Tev and Keving also advance to the finals along with the remainder of the top 16 competitors. Congrats to all that came out and had a great day. Let's make the Lakeridge stop even better! See everyone out on Feb 2nd at Lakeridge.  Finally, we want to give a shout out to our girl Janelle Leclair who has impressed a lot out west this year, including the crew over at Diviante snowboard show.  Janelle is now getting hooked up by them on top of a long list of awesome supportive sponsors.

I'd like to start off by saying, Will Smith is the shi*t! I Am Legend kicked total ass! The mutants, the way he lived..... Wait, I watched that the weekend after the trip. Ok, I got up at 7:00 on the 27th of December. I was up and dressed and running out the door with enough gear for the five day adventure I was about to go on. O yes, Powderking, Western Canada's best place to get that feeling of peaceful mellow shred and a friendly wave from everyone you meet. ( A great f*cking mountain! May it never close!) Not to mention crazy snowfall all season long! ( Thus the name Powderking. Duh! 61 feet last year, what more evidence does anyone need?) So we leave the yard by 8:00, our little convoy, made up of an F-150, a Mini-van, and an Envoy are off  on the 5 hour trek to P.K. As we pass Baytree a town not on any maps except the U.F.A Cardlock location map.... Weird.... As we get passed the little town we hit smoke, lots of smoke, smoke so thick that we're stuck at a 50 km/h crawl for 20 mins. I really wanted to get to P.K. for a half-day of shred, and by 1:00 we are there and it is snowing big flakes. So I get my lift ticket, and up the triple-chair I go. On my way down I run into a group of skiers and snowboarders building a jump on the side of the run. I say hi, we talk about the snow, gear, and the condition of the jump, and before you know it we're shreddin' together and jumpin' off trees into 4-5 feet of powder. (Fastplants and front flips for everyone!) A fine half-day. So we drive to Mackenzie, we check in at The Willingston Lake Lodge. We unpack and unwind with a few beers, some pizza, and Guitar Hero till about 11:00, than lights out.
The next day I go straight for the top, up the T and hikin' towards the bowl. As I get to the boundaries I can't find no trail, broken up into the bowl to speak of. So I start breakin' trail in balls deep powder, ( Its one of the toughest parts of snowboarding, having to hike for some shred but it the end its always worth it.) I get half way up the bowl when I look over to the left and I see two guys with snowshoes a little lower down heading up an already broke trail, I broke trail for nothing! So I start leftward and I meet up with the two guys, we start chatting about the conditions, and I find out there name are Matt and J (Jason) from Wembley and Grande Praire . "Dope, I'm from around a place called Falher." "Frenchtown!" they both say laughing, obviously they've been there before. So we get to the top and sit down for a break, than we strap in. Its still snowing as we head down, the first 20 feet is hard-packed than... BANG! We cut into 3 feet of untouched powder! Straight Champagain! We're cuttin' it hard and every hell slash is a wave of powder to choke on. Beautiful, just beautiful. So we ride on down into the trees, and sweet jesus. Slash and burn, kill and turn, we throw it off anything and everything. A total powder play dream! I'm so stoked on the snow I smile all the way down to the parking lot. Matt and J are staying at the hill in campers in the parking lot with a third member of there group, Dano. We get there and they invite me over for a brew. How can I say no? ( And every run ends that way for the rest of the trip. Those guys we're totally wicked!) So us 4 ride the far left trees up by the 84's and the two creek valley for the rest of the day. The day ends, I tell the guys I'll meet up with them the next day.
Day 3 rools in, and I meet them at there Campers and we head up the mountain. Its snowing, again. We reach the top, and I set up my camera, I want to get and Artsy, Sceneic shot, success. Another piece for EtchaSketch. (Our shred video coming out the summer of 08') Thats all I film that day. Than I pack back up and this time the spot we drop in on is a steep slope with snow sculpted behind and between small trees by the wind, thus making steps that are flat out to about 6 feet and drop down to about 10-12 feet. So we head down popin' off one step, and gaping to the next. One of the funnest abd best rushes of the trip. We keep the fun-fest  up until we hit the tree-line. Than it was Heaven, just like the days before.  I just ride the pow, never giving a second thought of getting any shots for the rest of the day.
The final shred day, day 4. It comes in with sun-light and blue skies. The first of the trip. (We got 8 inches of fresh while we were there.) So this day I ride with my goggle-cam on to catch any wicked shred that goes down. So we ride out into the backcountry and run into a man in his 50's at least, with a Prior split board and the dopest gear I had ever scene. We talked to the guy about the part of the backcountry we were in, and about his gear. He turns out to be the coolest guy I've ever met, truly a snowboarder, a man pure in the sport, he was what snowboarding truly should be. There for the ride and nothing elsa, no sponsors, no attitudes, just the need to shred and have fun. We say our good-byes and good-shreds as we rip down the slope, we never did get his name.... I want to be just like him if I reach 50. On our second last run we come upon an abandoned road on the side of the mountain, it goes through an open spot and is cut slightly into the slope to give the high side a cliff look. Perfect! We all get the idea, road-gap. So we build the jump in the line we want to hit it on. Matt and J hike up to hit it. Its a 30 feet from lip to landing. Matt drops in, lands square on the landing and rides away. We all cheer and the session starts right up. J's up, than Dano, than Matt again, than I hit it with my goggle-cam, as I air over, I hit the landing and get bucked forward onto my face. I get up, not hurting one bit. (Except for my pride.) I hike up again, this time I do a frontside fakie with a Stalefish in the mix, by the the time I stop tumbling, I'm looking up-hill at my feet. Damn, not getting it  but still having fun. (The only person to stick the damn thing was Matt, lucky prick!) So we ride down to the highway and start walking back to P.K. I wave to every vehicle, and got nothing but funny looks, I didn't care, it was one of the best riding days of my life! We're half way back when the owner of P.K. stops with his truck and trailer half loaded with garbage. "Wanna lift? Jump in the trailer!" We all jump in laughing, we keep on laughing all the way to the parking lot. (Thanks for the lift! It smelt bad, but damn did it save my legs.) What a wicked 3 and a half days of riding, awesome snow, awesome crew. I can't wait till I go back.

I'm forever hooked on the P.K. white!!

P.S. On the way back we stopped at the A&W in Chetwyne. They have the hottest group of ladies working at a fast-food joint I have ever seen. Go Chetwyne!!!!!

When most people think about China, they imagine Kung Fu, The Great Wall, poverty and communism.  Where these things still make an appearance in our daily lives every so often over here, the new face of China has changed.  In an economy that is flourishing, not only are most snowboards now produced here, but also the sport itself is finding is feet in what turns out to be the new snowboard market that has the most potential in the world.

Just a few short years ago, the population of in China had never even heard of snowboarding (or skiing for that matter), but thanks to Steve Zdarsky and his event The Nanshan Open things are changing.  Nowadays just outside of Beijing you can find 14 ski areas, one of which is Nanshan, the host of the only international snowboard event and the resort which boasts The Nokia Nanshan Mellow Park, the best freestyle area in the country.  With the first and largest event in China, The Nanshan Open with only 6 years behind it is now a 4 star TTR event and has a prize purse of $25,000 US Dollars.  But, things were not always so glamorous…

              Austin Smith, frontside 5.

“The Chinese people remind me of the early 90’s when snowboarding just   started. There is a buzz around it, like the good old days. Nothing but positive passion for this great shredding activity. I’m looking forward to experiencing this wild country once again." -Marc Andre Tarte”

Tadej Valentan with another front 5.
The Open was born when a handful of riders, mostly foreigners living in China, got together in the small but first park on Chinese soil.  The day was reminiscent of those homegrown events that took place twenty years ago in the west, but no one could imagine the potential. For an event to find such success in such a short time in a country that didn’t event have distributors of snowboard goods until a short time ago has never been done before.  And with International media attention, top-level riders in attendance and sponsors such as Red Bull, Quiksilver and Gibson Guitars, the Nanshan Open is putting Chinese snowboarding on the map.

The Nanshan Open has single-handedly driven the progression of snowboarding from a newborn infant to a teenager in the Peoples Republic.  The snowboard scene has by no means reached its potential, but when you witness the Nanshan Open you would never believe that this is Chinese snowboarding.  With Chinese riders competing head to head with international pros, musical acts on stage that are famous nationwide, and video productions like Mack Dawg and The Pirates on hand to catch all the action, its like you were magically taken back to the west for these tow days.

    Atsushi Ishikawa pleasing the crowd.

The park, which was expanded in 2006 by relocating 30,000 cubic meters of earth, is now the only international standard area of its kind in the country. Hosting top riders such as Hampus Mossesson, Marc Andre Tarte, Kier Dillon and Danny Davis, The Nokia Nanshan Mellow Park is an integral part of The Open.  Without the hard work of Steve and his crew of local top riders, the Chinese snowboard scene would sill be unheard of….

The Nanshan Open takes place this January 5th and 6th at The Nokia Nanshan Mellow Park, 20 mins outside Beijing, China.

Every day we are faced with a myriad of decisions: paper or plastic, beer or whiskey, left or right hand, cracker or toast; life certainly is complicated. Even in snowboarding, an activity pursued as a means to escape daily life, we are constantly making decisions: frontside or backside, groomers or glades, powder or ice (some decisions are much easier than others). How often, however, are you faced with a decision that will impact your future ability to ride? You might just be surprised at just how often we are faced with just such a choice and by some accounts make the wrong decision. When it comes to making choices about the environment, as snowboarders we should probably tend to those that won't make the planet warmer. We like snow, so global warming should be a severe pain in our collective asses. Although when faced with certain choices, that decision isn't quite so easy. The answer might not be obvious, so how do you come to a decision?

Recently a colleague sent me an article explaining how, by reducing our consumption of meat by 10%, we could reduce our CO2 footprint by up to 25%. The premise being that factory farming practices are responsible for the creation of massive amounts greenhouse trapping gasses via the release of methane from bovine bungholes. Who knew our ability to shred could be so affected by flatulence (fart jokes: they're not just for the juvenile anymore). This idea of reducing one's carbon footprint by eating less meat is by no means a new idea, vegetarians have been arguing this fact for years. There is a gaping hole in this argument, however, which is often overlooked, namely the point of origin of our food.

I'm what's rotting in your colon.I have much respect for people who choose to be vegetarians. In fact, for a period in my life, I myself was vegetarian although it caused me to become under weight and sickly (I'm too lazy to want to spend two hours a day cooking good vegetarian meals that will keep me from losing weight). If being vegetarian works for you, that's great, there are many advantages to a non-meat diet. A smaller carbon footprint, however, is not necessarily one of them. The reality is, that pretty much anywhere where you snowboard there's winter. This means that for a good part of the year, the basic elements of a vegetarian diet are not available locally and must be imported. This usually involves trucks which are heavy emitters of greenhouse gases thus negating the reduction in cow farts.

For more significant reductions in your personal carbon footprint than cutting meet out of your diet, you should look to buying locally grown food whenever possible. I'm pretty sure this would have a much greater impact on the environment in general as well as bolster the local economy. Besides the real culprit is not diet but mass consumerism and the lengths industry goes to in order to support it. By eliminating factory farming, Adam Smith's invisible hand of the market would do what it should and give beef it's proper natural price (which ought to be much higher than it is now). Increases in the cost of beef would be a significant step toward reducing our daily intake of it (in developed countries, people typically eat about 224 grams of beef per day whereas in Africa most people consume only about 31 grams per day), not to mention a decrease in cow farts thus ensuring a continued state of winter.

I realise that this is straying somewhat from the topic of snowboarding, however, this relates back to the old adage of thinking globally and acting locally. This can be interpereted as meaning that the global impact of your daily decisions should be taken into account. For example:

  • Left or right hand? Try the stranger, it feels like someone else is doing it.
  • Cracker or toast? Here's an idea, avoid the circle jerk in the first place.
  • Frontside or backside? Surprise me.
  • Powder or ice? Jeeze is there really a decision to make here?

What's important is that these are things that should be kept in mind when faced with choices, namely the more global impact of even the smallest decision. I'd like to be able to keep snowboarding for many years to come, so I'd hate to feel even partly responsible for the disapearance of winter thus negating my ability to...

Keep Shreddin' the GNAR!

Basic info, where were you born, where you living,  age, and sponsors?

I was born in Leduc Alberta February 5th 1984.... that would make me 23. I ride for Billabong, Sapient, Smith and Level Gloves.

How has your season treated you this year?

My season was awesome. I rode a lot of pow. A couple minor injuries but that's ok. It’s a part of the game.

You have a sled yet?

Ya, I got a 99 Summit 670. I LOVE SLEDDING.

Do you plan on getting more into the backcountry next year?

Ya ... All I want to do is sled. Its so much better then snowboarding anywhere I've been.

Give me a percentage breakdown on your snowboarding: contest, traveling, urban missions, filming, backcountry, mellow shredding (park), whatever floats your boat, etc.....

35% Backcountry

25% Whatever Floats

15% Urban Missions

10% Contests

10% Park

5% Traveling

Plans for the summer?

Work, try to make money to buy a truck. Of course hit up camp a bit, hit a few street rails in Van, and skate and wakeskate whenever possible.

Rail missions in winter or summer? Why?

I like rail missions in the summer mostly because Vancouver never gets snow and if they have snow that usually means that the mountain is going to be so much sicker than some street rail.

What do you do to get the bills paid?

I drive taxi for Resort Cabs here in Whistler... if you ever need a cab Request Warren.

Who do you ride with?

Anyone that calls me in the morning.

What pisses you off?

Waiting for people, sleds that don't work, negative people, people that back out of missions, cops and Rent-a-cop’s.

What gets you pumped?

Good Friends, Good attitude, Good Conditions, Good music. Anything good.

Shout outs?

Shout out to Risto at Billabong, Chris at Smith and Level, Spencer at Sapeint, Todd and Brad at the Summit, Slizzy at Gnarcore, Tyler, Ryan Conway, Chase Conway, Mr Jack Crompton, all my friends, my Mom and Dad, Jess and Court and anyone else that has helped me out over the years. Thanks!

Well its time to start getting a little more arty on this damn profile. so (when ever we find  the time) we are going to start profiling some of our favorite artist. this first one happens to be a friend and a snowboarder and he just so happens to be one of my favorites. corey smith

Corey Smith is a painter and photographer, who resides in Portland, Oregon. Through his masterful use of contour, Smith’s high gloss ultra-flat paintings cleverly capture the joys of plasticity, absurd recreation, and the fall out of the pre-manufactured American Dream. Smith’s candid photographs are memorials to the joys of thoughtless reasoning. They celebrate the spontaneity of humanity and youthful self-destruction.

corey's newer works

Reviewer Richard Speer described Smith’s work as
” Portland art scene’s guilty pleasure of the year, updating Pop Art with Gen X/Y ’tude, but without the attendant faux earnestness or half-acknowledged, half-denied irony. This guy goes for broke, and he f*ckin’ rocks. This is awful, deeply wrong, utterly fantastic stuff, a perfect distillation of a time, place, and generation.”

internet mogals dandg said
" this guys funny as f*ck, shreds, paints, designs, films, shoots photos and has his own rock'n'roll band we've got a hard on for corey smith"

oh and he shreds too...did we mention that?

see more corey at www.myspace.com/capitacorey

I feel it welling up inside
And Robert Smith lied,
Boys do cry and with
Blood tears in my eyes I’m an Anne Rice novel come to life.
I can’t hide the monster… anymore.
One can, only feel desolate for so long until
One starts to change into
Something the mirror doesn't recognize.
Metamorphosize.
The darkness has been biding its time
To claim its latest victim,
Fresh meat for carnal desires,
To become, what I became.
I viewed the sun for the last time.

Will you still hold me when you see what I have done?
Will you still kiss me the same,
When you taste my victim’s blood?
So crimson and red,
I feel it flowing from your lips. (Crimson and red)
My heart is dead and so are you.

And it pulses through,
The desire to change, to deconstruct
All of my,
All of my, past failings.
But where to begin, because when you live in sin
It’s hard to look at saints,
Without them reflecting your jet black aura back on you.
And all I have is hope
My inner burn’s not fading,
I’ll wipe the blood from my cheek and get on with my day.

Will you still hold me when you see what I have done?
Will you still kiss me the same,
When you taste my victim’s blood?
So crimson and red,
I feel it flowing from your lips. (Crimson and red)
My heart is dead and so are you.

And all I have is hope
And all I need is time
To bury in pine under six feet of time
The lies I told me about myself.
Claw my way out,
Pick the splinters from under my fingernails.
I won’t lose hope,
I won’t give in.
Just live and breathe, try not to die again.
Just live and breathe, try not to die again.
Just live and breathe, try not to die again.
I try not to die again.

Will you still hold me when you see what I have done?
Will you still kiss me the same,
When you taste my victim’s blood?
So crimson and red,
I feel it flowing from your lips. (Crimson and red)
My heart is dead and so are you.

Will you still hold me when you see what I have done?
Will you still kiss me the same,
When you taste my victim’s blood?
So crimson and red,
I feel it flowing from your lips.(When you taste my victim's blood)
My heart is dead and so are you.

March 27, 2007

So I hear that the Down Lo comp to close out Mount Saint Louis' seaons was amazing.  I wouldn't know first hand due to being in the wrong spot at the wrong time with the right amount of booze in me the night before.  Seriously!  Fine believe what you want.  But you should also believe this, our home boy Kevin Scriver, yeah the same Kevin Scriver who won the Ontario finals of the Smith Grudge Match (www.smmithoptics.com) just won the Down Lo comp this past Sunday.  Word the effe up Mr. Scriver!  Many witnesses have told me Kev went ginormmous all day and was one of only a couple people to hit the GIANT channel gap ... and stomp it!  Word.  The winnings couldn't have come at a better time either; Kev and fellow Paint the Town Red rider Kyle Taylor are on their way out west to end the season off proper.  (Proper as in MC Hammer proper).  Sorry I missed the awesomeness .. safe trip and see ya when ya get back to Ontario guys.
Also, happy birthday to Jamie Corneal and Chance Morison!  bottles to the ground!

So the crew is back from London, some of us in better condition then others.  The parties were out of control and the Ontario finals of the Smith Grudge Match 4, hosted at Bloer Mountain, were incredible.  Everyone that came out made the judges' jobs more difficult then they would have liked, especially since some of the judges were felling a bit "under the weather".  In the end, the finals came down to Jamie Corneal and Kevin Scriver battling head to head for the title.  Both individuals rode amazing all day and the final had to go to a sudden death third and final run to see who would come out victorious.  After long deliberation, the winner of a Smith contract and $1,000 cash was.... Kevin Scriver.  Congrats Scriver and welcome to the Smith team and the Stub Films crew... we are all stoked to have you onboard.  Applause must be given to Jamie Corneal as well for his amazing riding and his 2nd place finish.
Be sure to check out all the action at www.smithoptics.com in the coming weeks for the Ontario Smith Grudge Match 4 video.
