JumpCamp Jam (one day) March 19

The first JumpCamp session was awesome! The conditions were wicked with all the new snow we've gotten on the Island in the last month. The season's have switched here this year; we had spring in the winter and now we're having winter in the spring. Man, it's total global weirding.... We had a gorgeous day on Saturday and all the campers loved the new park design. Sunday was a little soggy but that didn't slow anyone down and everyone really progressed their shred skills over the weekend. Thanks to all the coaches for their hard work and all of our killer sponsors for all the prizes!

Coaches Corner: Senor Brown, Cobra Commander and Captain Hatesalot.

Coach Myles getting all inverted.

Campers getting the bro assisted tow ins.

JumpCamp Exclusive:
Very rare photo of Coach Olaf Larsen skiing in a one piece suit. Even back when he was a two-planker wanker he had some serious style. Look at the outfits in this pick! Hahahaha.......  Actually they're not much different than the crazy outfits nowadays.

Hahahahaha........ man.

New JumpCamp whip! Yes folks, it's true. JumpCamp has gotten rid of the hoopty and picked up a nice new truck. Thanks to everyone at Brian McLean Chevrolet in Courtenay for everything. Go in and buy a vehicle and tell them JumpCamp sent you.

The doors at Olympic Village Lodge at Squaw Valley opened at 7:30 last night and Standard’s movie AESTHETICA was set to start at 8:30. Fuel TV, a sponsor, was on hand filming and reporting from the event. The Fuel TV reporters for the night were Tina Dixon and Jim Rippey. Other sponsors for the night were Porters Lake Tahoe, VAS Entertainment and Squaw Valley USA. As the clock edged towards show time the line to get in was spreading into the parking lot. Soon a roar of applause erupted from inside Olympic Village Lodge. Show time!

Once inside it was shoulder to shoulder and there was standing room only to watch AESTHETICA. The way that the lodge is laid out gave everyone in every corner a view of Standard’snew movie release. Some highlights of AETHETICA was Johan Olofsson’s part on Burton’s Nofish… he was killing the steep and deeps on this bindingless wonder. Torstein Horgmo part where he had an amazing shot at Homewood Ski resort on the west shore of Lake Tahoe As well as the monster spring jump at Alpine Meadows. Another favorite was Mads Johnsson’s part with plenty of fresh powder and steeps. For the rail junkies there was enough urban shredding to feed that need.

When the AESTHETICA drew to a close people started to migrate outside to a cooler and fresher atmosphere then inside where it was smelly and hot. Many folks left because the 21 and under crowd was not allowed at the after party.

To kick off the second half of the night Fortress came out to melt some faces with some good old metal, Fortress was formed in the early 1990’s in Lake Tahoe melting guitar solos by legendary Dave Hatchett, head banging guitarist Brian Harrison, bass by Mike Hatchett and insane drums by Rob Jaeger… Lights, Camera, Action. A little Priest, Maiden, UfO, Metallica and some Slayer had everyone head banging, crowd surfing and beer drinking. The crowd was hungry and thirsty for more metal and Fortress gave it to them rocking out the standard crowd for a solid hour and a half.

Falls Creek, Australia – August 19th, 2008: The 08/09 season of the Swatch TTR World Snowboard Tour is charging at full steam down under and the anticipation is rising for the first 4Star event on the Tour, theOakley Stylewars 2008. Taking place August 24th - 28th 2008 in Falls Creek, Australia, the 4-day lifestyle Slopestyle event, complete with intense snowboarding, parties and live music, is looking to be the highlight of the Southern Hemisphere.

With 500 Swatch TTR ranking points in the mix along with a $15 000 USD prize purse, Stylewars is sure to carry the competitive momentum set just recently at the 5Star Burton New Zealand Open and 3Star Billabong Snow Stock. Last season, Norwegian rider Torstein Horgmo blew apart the Falls Creek scene, and this year he’s back to claim it all again. But a hefty challenge Horgmo is sure to meet, as this year’s event is full to the brim with over 40 talented riders set to destroy the 3 – Kicker course.

Expect freestyle entrepreneur Travis Rice (USA) to make things spicy as current TTR World No. 2 Chas Guldemond (USA) attempts to get back the Tour Lead which was taken from him last week at the 3Star Billabong Snowstock by James Hamilton (NZE) Swatch TTR No. 4 Janne Korpi (FIN), TTR No. 13 Mikkel Bang (NOR), TTR No. 21 Sebastien Toutant (CAN), and TTR No. 40 Antti Autti (FIN) are sure to keep it interesting alongside a sick south-hemi contingent that includes the likes of TTR No. 26 Jake Koia (NZE) and Australian snowboarders Robbie Walker and Ryan Tiene.

Current leader of the Swatch TTR women’s ranking, Jamie Anderson (USA), will also take part in the men’s competition. Although there are no women’s points available at Stylewars simply due to the large scale of the competition features, she will show case her talent together with the guys. We are excited to see how the top female on the Tour will do.

Riders will be greeted with a relaxed, shred-friendly atmosphere, but even more exciting is the private, contest-purpose built Slopestyle course, already beefed up due to an excellent snow season thus far and set to exceed last year’s set up with increased quality and flow.

Also coming up soon on the Swatch TTR Tour is the 3Star Boost Mobile Sno Sho presented by Samsung, a one-night, under-the-lights, Big Air and Rail Showdown. Taking place August 29th to 30th at Perisher Blue, Australia, the event boasts a $30 000 USD prize purse and the longest rail seen in competition that is sure to spark some creative hits. Perisher Blue will also host the 5Star Burton Australian Open, starting off on September 1st.

For more information on the Swatch TTR 4Star Stylewars and the 3Star Sno Sho, along with inspiring videos, blogs, and ranking stats, head on over to www.ttrworldtour.com and keep yourself up to date.

MGT Snowboard Camp infiltrated Banff's Mt. Norquay this past weekend. With a sold out camp, a perfected terrain park, and a roster of pro coaches including American imports Colleen Quigley and Runway Film’s rail wizard; Desiree Melancon, MGT had an incredible weekend and all the campers went home with perma-smiles and a new bag o tricks. The only winter aspect about the camp was that participants were strapped into snowboards, otherwise everything else had elements of a well stocked summer session; the +10c weather, blue sky, outdoor barbeques, and t-shirt riding. Coaches reported all time progression from their respective groups and with thanks to our sponsors, all the campers went home with some new gear and enough stickers to build a house. The weekend was a complete success Thanks to all the campers who came out and helped MGT once again spread the shred.

Next up is layering the sunscreen in preparation for the inaugural MGT summer camp sessions at High Cascade Snowboard Camp (Mount Hood, OR) and South America Snow Sessions (Bariloche, Argentina).

Check out our website for more info coming soon www.mgtsnowboardcamp.com.

The level of skill being displayed in all of the Whistler Blackcomb Parks is astonishing these days. The progression we are seeing in athletes is at light speed and tricks formerly reserved for the rare mutants are now being thrown with ease by local kids skipping school to ski and ride. (Don’t skip school!) This week I witnessed 16-year-olds throwing double back flips, 19-year-olds spinning corked 10s and a 4-year-old slide a four foot round bar. This progression has pushed the Park crew to step up and create the best possible playground for these athletes and then work backwards to ensure we have a smooth progression. The bar is being set high for the next generation and we are doing our best to evolve at the same rate.

The Parks all got new set-ups this week, some even seeing changes daily. On Whistler Mountain we changed up the top section to include a new barrel bonk in addition to the stump jibs as well as freshening up Bobcat with a never-been-tired-before combo box with a quad kink. There are also new jump styles on Chipmunk and two “Skate Style” spines with log and metal coping for every transfer trick imaginable.

The Choker Park saw the addition of the Quicksilver and Nintendo boxes set up in series as mellow up-boxes as well as the addition of a mini shack booter style step over jump. The Superpipe rebuild has resulted in the best pipe I have ridden in a long time and special props go out to Andy Morrison for his epic 17 hour shift grooming the pipe se we can all rip it this week!

The Terrain Garden continues to be one of the busiest parks with hordes of newbie riders getting their legs on the small jumps, mini spine, boxes and rails offered up in this line. We are hoping to add a few more basic flat boxes to the mix so trick development can progress here too.

The HL Park has basically been split into Lucas Land’s rail line for metal grinders and the main park for jumpers. The left line continues to be the BIG XL line while the right side offers up the L / XL multi-takeoff options.

If you have not been up in the parks yet this year, you are missing out! Don’t wait to see it in next year’s vids, come on up today.

Office Booyz Bear Mtn 08!

Well the tradition of crappy weather followed the Office Booyz contest all the way down to California this year for our first ever Office Booyz event held south of the Canadian boarder. Bad weather boarding isn't out of the norm for the local mountains of Vancouver but for it to happen at Bear had us a little worried. Despite the weather we had an amazing turnout and an ever better time. Here's some highlights of the action that went down during the contest.

Chris from Drop with the big point to the judges!

Burton's ICEman with the one footer.

Reverse taco!

Eric from TWS skateboarding keeping it skate with an indy over the donut.

A big thanks goes out to everyone at Malakye.com, Bear Mountain, Future Trade News, Jager and everyone who came out for making the event a huge success. Next years gonna be bigger and better!

Thats it for now!

Keep posted for Office Booyz Vancouver details. This is the year we'll be eating donuts and drinking coffee in the sun!

02.11.08
Had my 2wk check-up with the doc this afternoon.  They removed the clunky splint and suchers, as well as took more x-rays.  The x-rays look good and the doc says that the bones are staying in perfect position.  Next week they should be removing the three external pins.  Apparently, this is done with a pliers!  I intend to take video of the procedure to share will everyone

They also had me visit with the occupational therapist (OT) to give me a few exercises to work on, as well as fit me with a plastic removable splint.  This thing is tons better then the ace bandage wrapped split that was used after surgery.  It is 1/4 the weight and stops mid forearm and best of all it is removable for doing flexibility exercises.

I have more photos and tried to post but sb.com choked on them.  I will try again later.

Next appointment is next week Monday and I am looking forward to the removal of these stupid pins.

02.18.08
3 wks.  Just got back from the doc and PT.  What a relief, they removed the three pins.  They used a needle nose pliers to remove them.  Just a simple grab and twist and they came right out, no pain at all.

The report is very good.  The doc said that everything looks perfect and he said that he wasn't trying to brag either.  He said that the fracture was REALLY bad and that there were several bone pieces to put back into place.  He was very pleased with how things were going.

I am still in the same 2-piece plastic splint and will be in it for 2-3 more weeks.  I have various PT exercises to do to regain range of motion.  The only activity that I am allowed to do without the splint is typing, which has gotten alot easier.  It is great to be able to type more then two words per minute.

Next appointment is in 3 wks.  Sounds like it will be a total of 12wks (April 21st) before all restrictions are removed.  That works for me, since this should have me ready for wakeboarding season.  I have a business trip to Orlando at the end of April and I think I will plan to hit the cable park while I am there.

03.03.08
It has been 5wks since the surgery and I had another PT appointment today.  Not alot new to share except that things are progressing as expected.  I go back to see the doc in a week for more x-rays.  Hopefully, the report is good and I won't have to wear the plastic splint for everyday activity.  I am looking forward to the go ahead to start more aggressive PT and get range of motion back.  Range a of motion is very limited right now at about 35 degrees down and 25 degrees back.

03.10.08
6wks since the surgery and saw the doc this afternoon for more x-rays.  The x-rays show that the bone is mostly healed and the doc said that I don't need the plastic splint anymore.  This is great news!  Next is more aggressive PT and strength training.  The next doc appointment is in 5wks and this should be my go ahead to do anything that I want.

03.25.08
Ok, its been 8wks since the surgery and I had another PT appointment today.  I have gotten 90% of my range of motion back in all directions and the therapists says that I am doing GREAT!

I experience slight pain when in any extreme position, but this is to be expected.   Just have to work on getting some strength back before WB season starts.  I have the strength of a 3rd grader right now--I am strength training with 3, 4, and 5 lb dumb bells right now

News and Stuff: Zizo=Kazu
By: gnarcorevideoplay

kazu and beards Kazu or Zizo, Beardmore and filmer Pat Henery, just generally looking hard If your familiar with famed japanese photographer Kazu then you know how much of an enigma the guy is. His very existence is a mystical feat of nature. Kazu is now staff for Atomic Snowboards so he's been shooting with MATT BEARDMORE a ton as well as Gerg Maxwell who's in town filming for the new Alterna Film. Both Greg and Kazu have been bunking out in the famed Artbarn which has turned into an international hostel these days. The Beards has become some what of a father figure to Kazu (who i'm sure in reality is actually older then mat) and has many a fantastic stories of the little guy that range from a rare bum disease to and rolling deep into Revy's Back-country with only a single frayed snowmobile belt. Rumor has it he even got out shooting with Atomic hopeful and teen heart throb BARRY HARTMAN but the report is still out on that one. When it all comes down to it Kazu is a righteous lens man with a sweet english-canadian vocabulary and just a real treat to be around. Kazu has had multiple international snowboard magazine covers, been a model for AIR blaster, has his own T-shirt designed after him and just generally wows everyone he collides with. In a random move of role reversals i shot this sick sequence of Kazu going from photographer-dude to dude-in-a-pink-shirt-with-his-own-image-on-it, breath taking i know....and your welcome.in-truck.jpg kazu-pants.jpgkazu-hoodie.jpgkazu-hoodie.jpgkazu-hoodie.jpgPiece!

We have been blessed with the ‘Whitegold’ once again this season here in Whistler. It continues to storm daily dropping record amounts of snow. The lack of sun has made it really tough for us to shoot but nevertheless the boys are out everyday riding the hill or sledding and trying to get some shots for the teaser that will be coming out soon. We didn’t see the sun until spring last year and it looks like much of the same for this years winter season… but who’s complaining. All the repeat storms have made for really really bad avalanche conditions here and across the province so everyone use extra caution out there in the mountains right now and keep watching the avi report at:www.avalanche.ca

The Sandbox online store is fully up and running smoothly now and all of the product is finally in stock. Special thanks go out to all of our suppliers: Paul and Joel at Tenille for the t-shirts, Matt from Predator for the super cool Brain Buckets and George from Fleming Decal for the great stickers. Go check out the store and all of you have to buy something so we can eat, haha. My new favorite dish is mixing a can of pork and beans with a box of Kraft Dinner mmmmmmm soooo goooood. Don’t tell my mom though, I’m Italian and they would kill me if they knew I ate KD. It’s pretty much the Canadian version of a classic simple Italian dish my dad always makes called ‘pasta fagioli’ (pasta and beans).

We are going to try and get a lot more short videos rolling up on the site for you guys. Check out Clayton’s latest installment that is up on here now called ‘1 Run With Max & Teine’. . The name says it all, Max Ritchie and the new addition from Australia, Ryan Tiene went up and blasted some pillows and dorked around on Whistler’s infamous hit run. Geeves came up to shred too but had to bail out due to some serious cold and flu symptoms. He may have also been feeling a little drowsy after chugging a whole bottle of Buckley’s on the way up the hill before riding. We will be taking some more ‘Runs’ with the Sandbox riders through the season so watch for those short clips.

This photo on the left by Jon Kirby was taken on a recent rail trip. It’s our Alberta filmer Mike Fikowski leading the boys through a ‘Rail Yoga’ session before a big night shoot. Watch for Mike’s yoga video and leisure wear dropping soon at a Lulu Lemon boutique near you.

Did I mention the Sandbox store was now open ? Yeah, just in case you missed that one earlier, go check it out.

Youtube clip of the week:

Pierre Andre – the founder of Soletechnologies - makers of Etnies, eS, Emerica and Thirty-Two Snowboard Boots. Pierre has been involved and supporting our industry for a long time… as you can clearly tell from this historical video. Thanks to Pierre and Soletech for all the support for our films over the years.

So there was a handful of dumb people today - me included, that decided since it wasn't really snowboard weather, then it meant it was kayaking weather!!!!

So here is a bunch of us at the put-in getting ready for a very cold run!

I'm in the red boat - getting ready to slide down into the water

Waiting for the others to join us

It blows my mind that Christian groups in the United States are boycotting "The Golden Compass."  If their beliefs are as strong as they believe them to be then surely they can take a little questioning.
Here is a great read from Mark Moford regarding this issue.
-----

It has become a rule, some sort of law of the popular culture upon which any open-minded human worth her soul can rely with utter and perfect clarity.

It goes like this: If there is a piece of art, a TV show, a column, a book, a movie, a blog, a movement, a wine bottle or sexual position that somehow deeply threatens the various ultraconservative sects of Christian-blasted America to the point where their pale, dour representatives demand boycotts and distribute angry pamphlets to try to stop people from experiencing said hunk of culture because of how negatively it portrays their seething, condemnatory God, well, it's time to break out the Champagne. Or buy that book. Or get very, very naked. Or all of the above.

So it is with the first movie made from Philip Pullman's astonishing "His Dark Materials" trilogy, "The Golden Compass," a complex, mystically gorgeous, spiritually dense, big-budget fantasy epic so far removed from the cute wizardry of Harry Potter and the thin, childish, monochromatic Christian morality of, say, "The Chronicles of Narnia," that it might as well be a Coen brothers movie. On acid.

Oh my God yes - they are protesting. They are pamphleting. From the Catholic League and Focus on the Family to evangelical/fundamentalist Christian blogs from here to Colorado Springs, they are calling on their trembling armies to boycott the film because they believe that Pullman's brilliant books - which, by the way, if I had the power, I would place in the eager hands of every youngish human on the planet, especially the girls - are not only aggressively anti-Christian, but that they also describe, as their grand finale, nothing less than the death of God. This is what they say.

And here is the terrific thing: They are absolutely right.

But let's be a bit more specific, shall we? Because as any fan of "HDM" knows, it ain't really about God, per se. Pullman's luminous novels have nothing to do with rejecting faith or destroying the spirit or inhibiting the exploration of what it means to be divine. They are, in fact, the exact opposite. They relish spirit and the magic of belief and love, are soaked through with divine inspiration of a kind any intelligent Christian (or honest spiritual seeker of any stripe, for that matter) should crave. This is what makes them so incredible.

The nefarious thing the books aim to kill is religious authority. It's about the destruction of dogma. It's about power, about who wants to control and manipulate life on Earth, about the blind, ignorant, even violent adherence to insidiously narrow codes of thought, belief, behavior, sex, desire and love.

This, of course, is the God of organized religion. This is the false deity that promotes numb groupthink, inhibits growth and abhors the feminine divine (perhaps the books' most beautiful, inspiring theme), the same paranoid, dreadful God that votes for George W. Bush because he will smite the icky gays and protect us from vile pagans and Buddhists and Muslims and feminists and frumpy genius atheist British writers. If humanity is to flourish, to get over its addiction to war and guilt and fear, this is the false God that should - that must - die.

Although the books have as their evil antagonist a sinister cabal called the Magisterium (obvious parallel: Catholic Church), they also have a slew of dark characters in service of the Magisterium, various assassins, double agents and robot drones running around trying to annihilate the children's spirit, destroy magic and lock down faith forever. Let us call these robotic drones, oh, say, the Catholic League. Or Focus on the Family. Gosh, no wonder they're a little peeved.

But it's almost too easy, is it not? Even a child can see that these people are so far from true spirit, so far from open consciousness, it's a bit like comparing a lint ball to a cloud bank, a dung beetle to a flower bed. They are spiritual caricatures, the creepy clowns in organized religion's gloomy circus, all scrunched brows and gnarled hands and so much repressed sexuality that it would make a porn star wince. Really, why give their silly protests any attention at all?

For one thing, because these groups have proven that they can be highly dangerous, utterly toxic to the culture as a whole. You already know the list - FCC crackdowns, stem cell research, ultraconservative judges, abstinence education, anti-choice laws, vicious homophobia, intelligent design, the rejection of science - all of which aim for the creation of a fascist theocracy in America.

In fact, director Chris Weitz, who adapted "The Golden Compass" for the screen, reportedly removed any direct mentions of God or religion from the film version, fearing, along with New Line Cinema, some sort of Christian conservative backlash. Fans were, appropriately, outraged. It remains to be seen how much of those vital themes Weitz left intact, but you could argue that the Bible-thumpers have already taken their sad toll.

(But I do look forward to the bloodcurdling screams that will surely come from these groups when they see the third film, which, if the creators hold at all true to the original book, and presuming the movie gets made at all, features a pair of wonderful, immensely powerful, tragic gay angels.)

It might not matter. With any luck, and if "The Golden Compass" turns out to be even half as wondrous as the book, it will hopefully fuel a surge in sales of the "HDM" trilogy in America and, perhaps, inspire a new literary awakening among young readers, darker and more complex and even (gasp) slightly sexual, far beyond the clever but innocuous magic of Harry Potter - which, by the way, had its share of religious bonk-jobs calling for its destruction, as wizardry is clearly the dominion of the devil. We all know what a huge drop in sales that protest caused.

But there is another note of good news from this tale of fear and whining and outcry, and it takes the form of another delightful rule upon which your soul can happily rely, as well as a heartfelt lesson for trembling ultraconservative sects everywhere.

It's this: If your ancient, authoritarian, immutable belief system is threatened by a handful of popular novels, if your ostensibly all-powerful, unyielding creed is rendered meek and defenseless when faced with the story of a fiery, rebellious young girl who effortlessly rejects your stiff misogynistic religiosity in favor of adventure, love, sex, the ability to discover and define her soul on her own terms, well, it might be time for you to roll it all up and shut it all down and crawl back home, and let the divine breathe and move and dance as she sees fit. Don't you agree?

  From Vail Resorts....

OLD MAN WINTER BLASTS THE COLORADO ROCKIES BLANKETING VAIL, BEAVER CREEK, KEYSTONE AND BRECKENRIDGE WITH SIGNIFICANT SNOWFALL

Vail, Colo.-Dec. 2, 2007-A significant winter storm left powder hounds giggling this morning with deep snow levels reported in the Colorado Rockies. This morning’s mid-mountain measurements showed 15 inches of new snow at Beaver Creek, with 11 inches falling at Vail and Breckenridge and 7 inches at Keystone.

Each of the resorts plans to open additional terrain by next weekend Dec. 8-9, 2007. Beaver Creek’s Rose Bowl opens on Monday, Dec. 3 and Breckenridge will open Peak 8 on Dec. 8. North Peak, Keystone's second mountain, will be ready for skiers and snowboarders by next weekend. Keystone also opened a second terrain park rail yard this weekend and is now offering more than 30 boxes, rails, wall rides and other jib features. Vail is currently offering more than 1,000 acres of terrain, 67 trails and 15 lifts. A mid-week storm is forecasted with more snowfall possible Wednesday through Friday.

My Blog: Finally!!!
By: goghie

18.11.'07. 08:37 AM
It's snowing for the last 2 days, and it's snowing a LOT! Heavy snow fall is reported all across the country!
Gotta go buy some wax to iron my board, it's just about time, cuz in a day or two it's show time =) Just been reading through reports on snow conditions in local resorts... All I can say is: DAMN GOOD! Now it's us against nature, waiting for a moment it stops snowing to take off to higher grounds... Even tho I can't wait to strap my bindings on, I wish it doesn't stop yet, so we have huge amounts of fresh powder! Look through my window is promising, everything is white even on this altitude (about 80 m above sea level) around 40 cm of fresh snow, can't see what mountains look like cuz of the snow and the fog...
18.11.'07. 10.54 AM
Board is waxed and ready, maybe I'll go try it in my backyard =) I'll do it later, it's music downloading time now, gotta get some nice tracks to fill in mp3 player, and that should be it, everything done and ready!
Can't wait to start riding... I love that feeling, some punk-rock or techno echoing in my ears, board beneath my feet, and white mountain around me, can't compare that feeling with anything else, it's just 3 of us, snow, mountain and me... Damn, I wish I can do it right now...
