Recently the AFP reported that China was experimenting on dispersing clouds to prevent rain during Olympic events. Conversely, officials claim that China has already set up an extensive system that may be able to make it rain during the games if needed. Now wouldn't this kind of thing be useful in the winter. Especially after the winter we've just had on the east coast with very little in terms of actual snow fall. A little rain would also be useful in fighting the forest fires that recently ravaged the western United States. On the other hand, this could also turn out to be just another modality to spread disease.

It was August 10th, 2007 when the AFP reported that chinese scientists were "conducting high-altitude tests to eliminate clouds and stop rain [from] spoiling next year's Beijing Olympics."1 This was achieved by dispersing silver iodide and Diatomite into the atmosphere. These two compounds are thought to prevent moisture from forming into rain drops. Silver iodide is used as an antiseptic and diatomite is a naturally occurring, soft, chalk-like sedimentary rock so conventional wisdom would lead us to believe that the process is safe. At the very least, spectators at the 2008 Olympic games have little chance of catching some form of an infection while chinese scientist are pumping the air full of antiseptic. The idea of controlling the weather with chemicals does, however, raise a small red flag in my mind, although maybe I just watch too many James Bond type movie with over the top, megalomaniacal villains.

Give me $1,000,000 or you get no snow! The one thing that I find most interesting about this is that silver iodide, having a crystaline structure similar to ice, can induce freezing to the moisture in clouds when disperssed in the air (in China they use old anti-aircraft guns to shoot cans of the compounds into the sky). The first idea that came to my mind when I learned of this was that this seems like a feasible way of making it snow. I suspect that if done properly, this could also be much more effective than arrays of snow cannons on your favourite hill, or even better, combine the two.

Apparently this technique called cloud seeding is not new which makes me wonder why I hadn't heard of it until now. Had I known about this, I would have focused my energies last year on cloud seeding the skies over Vermont and western Quebec instead of wearing my pyjamas inside out and flushing ice cubes down the toilet (which is commonly thought to be a fundamental part of the snow dance). Perhaps the researchers who study this know something that we don't such as: a) cloud seeding is prohibitively expensive or b) cloud seeding is a potential health hazard. In the first case, I feel bad for the people of China who will have to foot the bill for this when the Olympics come around in 2008. In the second case I feel bad for the people of China who will be exposed to cloud seeding and the side effects of this technique, probably even after the Olympics are done and gone. In either case, it looks like I feel bad for the chinese. In the meantime, I'll be accepting donations to the "seed the clouds to shred the gnar" fund in an attempt to raise money, kind of like a snow insurrance policy, to seed the skies if we are again in dire need of snow this winter. I give you my assurances that this fund will be used only in cases of emergencies, namely on days where I'm snowboarding and can't find any freshies. The governing body of this fund will not be elected for obvious reasons.

So next winter when your hitting the slopes and you notice a little precipitation starting to fall. Look up in the sky, you may be getting a random dose of anti-septic for a few fresh lines. One way or the other, the important thing here is to...

Keep shreddin' the GNAR!

Universal Life Church Houston

www.universal_life_church_houston@yahoo.com.  Is seeking assistance in the form of donations to help the homeless. Many of these people receive Social Security and other Federal and State assistance. However; due to rising costs, and the lack of mental capacity, these people are victimized and left homeless, often with drug and alcohol dependencies... These people squander their Federal and State assistance in days. This money is meant to last the month, these are your tax dollars being wasted … we are helping them but in the wrong way…so a proposal to establish a care treatment center to teach and assist these publicly dependent people is being established by this church.

Adult care for those that need it... they will no longer wander the streets day and night and be prone to crimes or victims of crime. Their direct supervision will stop crime and reduce reciditivness of those on public support by our church’s watchful eye.

The church seeks to direct these people to areas away from the mainstream population so you will not need to be bothered with them any further... them and yourselves will be reasonably safe. Your tax dollars will no longer be wasted for each person we assist in this program.

This is a self supporting program. Once established with your donations the program will take in enough funds to offset its operating costs... so no additional cost will be incurred for this program...

We do not wish to seek government grants or funds since the government would then dictate to the program how it is operated...the governments’ structure has failed to date; to do anything but waste your tax money and promote crime in these areas. They fail to regulate existing programs in a manner necessary to ensure compliance for those receiving your tax based financial support.

What is this program??? Simply put…

It is the purchase of a building for habitation by those in need of affordable housing that are currently receiving government funding (social security –disability payments, welfare  etc..) for alcohol and drug dependencies or physical and mental disabilities. Or for those who are being released from prisons, hospitals, mental institutions, or found on the street; homeless. These people are incapable of sustaining a living without direct or indirect form of direction and supervision...

Please send donations to:

Try and think back to all the support the Boardshop as given you and the community (i.e. contests, deals, events, parties, sales, rad products, donations for terrain parks etc...), now we're asking for your support.

The Ride Golden Bowl is a nationwide NSIA supported event intended to help retailers promote and establish grassroots credibility while sharing their passion and expertise. There is a big difference between simply being a part as opposed to fully living the snowboard lifestyle! The Golden Bowl event is aimed at delivering on that vibe as it seeks to find the most influential snowboard store in the country.

The store with the most votes in each of the following provinces will see their team invited to attend the Ride Golden Bowl at Mont Tremblant during the NSIA on snow demo. Participating teams will have their travel and lodging expenses covered by the Ride Golden Bowl and will battle in a jam format slope style event. Each team will draft a Pro Rider from the event partners who will become part of the shop’s team in an effort to help them conquer the Ride Golden Bowl title.

It seriously takes no time and we will be your best friends and we'll love you forever.

Thanks for your suport!

I’ve only got $500 MORE LEFT TO RAISE!!!!   And only 1 week left to raise it!!!!

Thanks to those of you donating and helping me gain donations by spreading the link to my Leukemia donation site.  And a very very special thanks to those of you helping to collect tips for my hike at concerts of your friend's bands and other events.  That has really helped me to raise A LOT of money and I appreciate it so much.  Please keep it going as I'm still about $500 short of my goal.  So please send this link along to your family and friends.  Every $5, or $20 helps me to reach the goal.  Leukemia and Lymphoma and Hodgkin’s disease are very serious illnesses, especially for young kids.  So many in America , and around the world, are affected by Cancer each Day/Month/ Year.  This is our little way of reaching out and helping.  Thanks again everyone!   P.S. – so far my group of 28 hikers has raised about $100,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

This weekend – April 21st – 23rd
Friday – PARTY AT FOX AND THE HOUND, PARK MEADOWS – LONE TREE , CO.  In order to help raise funds for my Leukemia Hike May 5th, we are having a nice big party.  The donated items from the silent auction, plus the donation jars, should help raise some much needed FUNDAGE.  Please plan on attending – at least for a beer and some free appetizers.  Stay for the silent auction and all night fun.

Saturday –  Michelle needs to be up in Gleenwood to coach soccer in the early AM, and I plan on taking on a couple interviews.  Not sure if we’ll make it up on the hill for Vail’s last weekend or not.  My SOS University program kids are graduating this night down in Summit – so we will be down that way for the evenings events.

Sunday – Ride Day 48 – probably Vail.  Maybe Copper.

Last weekend – April 14th – 16th
Friday – NO riding for me.  My job interviews up in Vail went great… meaning I will be moving up there in the next 2-8 weeks, depending on which position I take.  Anyone got a room for rent?

Saturday – Ride Day 46 – Riding with ALL my brothers – Jim, Kylan, and Reg – and my little nephew, Mason.  He’s 3 and can SHRED on ski’s.  The weather was crap, the snow was crap, so my attitude was somewhat crap.  But we did manage to have some fun up on Vail – due to the nice 4 inches of fresh stuff.
Sunday – Ride Day 47 – All alone on Vail – good thing my trust iPod was there to keep me company.  It was about 60 degrees with lots of sun, such a nice day to watch the 100 ft pond skimming comp over on Golden Peak, Vail.

FYI - Drew and I are planning on driving up to Echo mountain for the last FRIDAY it’s open – April 28th – at about 5-6pm or so.  Drive time is about 35 minutes from my house, $15 lift tickets.

This weekend – April 14th - 16th
Friday – Ride Day 46 – I will be heading up to Eagle Thursday night as I have job interviews most of the morning in Vail/Avon – hopefully be on the hill getting in a few turns in the afternoon.

Saturday –  Ride Day 47 – Well, my little brothers are going to be in town so we should be shreading up Vail or BeaveCreek or Copper, not sure yet.

Sunday – Ride Day 48 – Same schedule as Saturday, but heading back to D town late night.  Michelle get to fly to Tahoe for the entire Easter weekend to see her family – LUCKY!!! Anyone want to schedule a road trip to Tahoe with me before season ends?

Last weekend – Apr 7th – 9th
Friday – NO riding for me.  Since most of my friends are LAME and bailed out on the night riding at Echo… I decided to take care of some things, and pack up the pup to head to the hillz a little early.  Stopped in Dillon and Frisco to have a couple beers with the boys and Rebecca.  Then off to Vail where I was too late for the G Love show  L   Oh well.  Off to Avon’s to Loaded Joe’s – you can already tell the season is coming to a close up in the valley, as the crowds of normal regulars are starting to dwindle all over town.

Saturday – Ride Day 44 – ONLY IN COLORADO can you wake up, play soccer in the morning with you shirt off, then snowboard at lunch for a few hours in a tee shirt or sweat shirt at BeaverCreek, then walk up to the Beave’ pool, and drop trow and jump in and swim in the sun for 2 hours.  GOD I LOVE THIS STATE!!!  The snow right now is typical spring – icy corduroy in the morning, softening by 10:30, squishy slush by noon = great riding, then too heavy and slow by 2pm in the afternoon.  The sun does some damage to the white wetness.
Sunday – Ride Day 45 – SOS staff appreciation ride day.  We were at the Beave again with even HOTTER conditions.  Good thing goggle tans are in here in CO.  We mobbed over to the Keller Williams show at Copper later that afternoon to do some hippie counting.   J   Fun show, but lots of driving as we had to be back over in Avon to setup for the staff appreciation dinner.  Talk about an exhausting weekend…. So much fun though.  Did I forget to mention how absolutely amazing my girlfriend Michelle is?

FYI - Drew and I are planning on driving up to Echo mountain every Friday night at 5 or 6pm until close.  Please let us know if you want to start car pooling with us on Friday nights – Drive time is about 35 minutes from my house, $15 lift tickets.

This weekend – April 7th - 9th
Friday – Ride Day 44 - Drew and I are heading up to Echo around 5pm or so.  You down to get in a few night laps?

Saturday –  Ride Day 45 – Copper again with Drew and others – more SunSation partying on the way.    Meet up with us if you can.

Sunday – Ride Day 46 – SOS staff appreciation ride day at BeaverCreek - followed by some driving to Copper to see Keller Williams, then back over to the valley by 7pm for the social dinner event... wow that's a lot of driving.

Last weekend – Apr 1st – 2nd
Friday – Ride Day 42  - Drew and I hit up Echo for a few hours – REVIEW TIME – So, Echo mountain is located about 30 miles from my house.  The directions are simple and you can get there 2 ways, from I-70, or through Evergreen. Either way, it’s a really short trip.  The night riding is only one run, 4 jumps, a few jibz, and some ice.  The night lighting is kind of rough as some of the landings are in the shadow, but it’s do’able.  The jibs are decent and it was a lot of fun… especially for only $15.  Meaning we can go each week on a weeknight and get some of our fix in.  The lift is a 3 chair that’s not too slow, and all in the dark.  So feel free to party it up on the lift as no one can really see you.  We will be going EVERY Friday night as they close end of April – please show your support as next year, this place will be better if they make some money this year.

Saturday – Warm up hike  with my Leukemia Society group – Nice trail – Belcher trail head by 9am , and hiked it up around White Ranch Canyon, or what ever its called.  Check out the couple pics I put up.
Sunday – Ride Day 43 – Copper was hoppin’.  SunSation in full effect with Particle.  Danced it up with the girlie for a few hours after lapping the park all day with Drew and Michelle.  About 5 inches fresh, so we had a couple runs through the trees.  Michelle and I got a pretty late start, not getting on the hill till after noon or so.  But with the sun out, goggle tan in full effect on this fine Monday – Rockies home opener today.

FYI - Drew and I are planning on driving up to Echo mountain every Friday night at 5-6pm until close.  Please let us know if you want to start car pooling with us on Friday nights – Drive time is about 35 minutes from my house, $15 lift tickets.

This weekend – Mar 4th – 6th
Saturday –Ride Day 33 - SOS Ride day at Breckenridge.  I’ll be with ‘the kids’ all day, but I’m up for drinks laaatttaaa’ if anyone is around.
Sunday – Ride Day 34 - Riding somewhere.  I’m thinking Vail or BeaverCreek if there is some snow.
Monday – Ride Day 35 – Riding again.  Not sure where though.

Last weekend – Feb 25th-27th
Saturday – Flew to Puerto Vallarta in the AM and got a cab over to Punta de Mita. Surf wasn’t great that first day so we just chilled by the pool for the rest of the afternoon, then went to dinner on the beach.  SO Romantic – F*(k all you couples out there.  So happy and in love… Yea, I’m jealous, so what.
Sunday –Breakfast in Sayulitas – surf town that kicks ass.  Not much for waves with a big crowd so we left and went back over to Punta Mita…. There is a little beach that you can hike to near Bucerias that had some great waves (for a beginner like me – hey it’s been 12 years so BACK OFF my lack of ability).
Monday – The surf was crap in the morning so we just goofed off at the beach for a bit and then ran me back to Vallarta to hit the airport.  Quick trip, but completely worth it.

This weekend - Feb 25th - 27th
Saturday – I’m flying to Puerto Vallarta for some S&R – Surf and Relaxation.  I haven’t surfed in about 12 years, so we’ll see how I do.
Sunday – More S&R in Mexico.
Monday – Flying back in the afternoon – probably doing some more home improvement projects.

Still at Ride day 32.  I will be riding the next weekend with SOS.  There is a comp in Aspen for boarder X that Saturday as well, so check the snowboard association site for details if you want to race.

Last weekend - Feb 18th - 20th
Saturday – I worked, so that sucked.  But I did bring my puppy into work and she loved it.  I ended up painting my bedroom, replaced the light fixture, painted the door, replaced the handle and hinge, and put up a new blind, as well as installed a remote controlled dimmer switch.  It looks pimp.  Just needs carpet to be put in within the next couple of weeks.
Sunday – Took a ME day at home and chilled out.  Liana and I ended up giggling most the afternoon watching Finding Nemo.
Monday – Another home improvement day – started to pimp out Luke’s room.  We went with a brown for the walls here.  Looks good as well.

This weekend - Feb 18th - 20th
Saturday - I'm working, so I can't go ride.
Sunday - I'm down to ride this day.  I think a hike at Loveland may be best, but I'll check the snow reports.  Secret number to call for Vail resort info - 1-800-525-2257, Copper - 1-800-789-7609.
Monday - Again, Check the snow reports in the AM to see where I'll be.

This weekend - Feb 11th - 13th
Saturday – Ride Day 30 -  SOS ride day #3.  We had a good turn out and a lot of fun.  SO COLD.  When I got to Breckenridge at 8am it was -18 degrees.  That’s cold.  Meet up with Trina, Brian (TruSpin14), and Kim for a couple drinks after riding.  Fun times.
Sunday – Ride Day 31 - Rode hard at Breck with Drew and Liana.  I was actually kind of sore after this day.  Yea, we rode that hard. I had to re tie my boots, and that’s never happened before.
Monday -   Ride Day 32 – Liana and I rode WinterPark.  The sun came out in the afternoon, so that was nice for my goggle tan.

Ahhh tonight is going to be FUN!!
There is nothing better than chillin with the girlies at the bar. Better yet at a bachelorette party! You should always make time for your friends. You all know that though I'm sure!
So...what's new with me...let's see. Well I've been battling this stupid cold for the last month and finally decided to do something about it! So the meds they have me on turned me into a mucus factory..not that anyone wanted to know that! But now you do! I am currently taking kleenex donations.
