Day 2/30: Big Timber mission & more!

I must admit, there have been a few hurdles this season, but I am having SO much fun! I’ve started the 30 day snowboard challenge for myself and this was Day Two. It is about more than just physically and mentally pushing myself - it’s about looking at this playground in a new and different way, finding new places and doing things I haven’t done before.

I headed out early on Monday morning with my aggressive skier friend Derek - he wanted to show me a cabin in Big Timber on Whistler Mountain. It was SO cold! -21C to be exact, so I was all layered up, ready for a long day!

After coffees and chats on the Whistler Village Gondola we headed up Peak Chair and down the Peak to Creek. We cut through some perfectly spaced trees off Upper Peak to Creek and guess what?! Fresh lines! I was floating through huge old growth trees and at that moment I felt like I was somewhere completely new! After a short hike we came to the cabin in the woods. It was built in honor of a fellow rider who lost his life doing what he loved. We took a moment to enjoy - it’s so awesome finding little spots like that.

We cruised back down through the trees to the long cat track to Creekside. Again I was floating along with only a couple of tracks in front of me! The sun was shining and the views of Sprout and Rainbow mountains were amazing. I passed by Kadenwood and continued onto Lower Peak to Creek, which was a bit icy. It took at least 2 hours in total, the snow was dry and fluffy and there was not another person in sight.

After lunch we uploaded the Creekside Gondola, to Big Red Express and across PEAK 2 PEAK to end the day with a few laps in the Crystal zone. Getting fresh groomers after lunch is practically unheard of and I loved every minute of it. Nothing beats a 4pm ride out to the valley!

Keep on shredding!

You all know the game. Lots of riding, sunshine, concerts, parties and pictures that help you piece together memories after the fact...
I'm also trying to undermine society and throw a little session for SB.commers during the partying on the mountain, so here it is.
Unofficial Snowboard.com Backcountry Jump Session
(also open to non-sb.com members if you want to bring them)
When: Wednesday April 16th, 2008
Where:
Either at 8:20 am at the GBB patio (the one next to the Longhorn where lessons meet up, in the summer the place is called Garbanzo Bike and Bean);
or at 9 am in the back corner of Pikas at the Roundhouse on Whistler Mtn. (Pikas is the downstairs cafeteria area at the Roundhouse) for the folks that want to upload from Creekside and meet us there.
after we meet and rally the troops, we'll head for Flute Bowl and take a short groomed hike (about 600m or so I think) up to the top and cross onto the backside. We're not going far out of bounds so you don't need skins or snowshoes. I want everybody to be able to come so we're not doing anything crazy.
What to bring: All your riding gear, food for lunch, a shovel if you have one (keeping in mind the more shovels the easier it is to build a jump and the more time we get to spend sessioning it), cameras (I'll bring mine, but anybody with real photography skills would be even better), and whatever else you need for a day in the alpine - I strongly suggest a spare layer, a pair of sunglasses for hiking/digging, spare gloves since you'll get wet digging, and sunscreen to keep it to goggle tan and not burn (christ I sound like my mother). If you have avalanche gear, bring it if you want, but don't stress too much, the spot doesn't face exposure from above and is a mellow enough slope that it's not a serious slide risk (in fact the run back down to the lift once you get back into bounds is far worse then the out of bounds area where the spot is).
It's all for fun and we're not pro caliber riders or anything so don't be intimidated, we'll build something that everybody's able to hit and have fun with, plus it's going to be a good opportunity to meet members of the site in snowboarding (which is the main goal) while we take a momentary break from the partying that is Telus... You know, this is a snowboarding website so why not have a little fun on the mountain.

So if you're interested or want any information about this, give me a holler. Let me know if you're in so I get an idea of the numbers.

Words: Gerhard Gross Images: David Rouleau

Friday the 15th marked the beginning of the first annual Westbeach Chinese Downhill and an effort to reconnect with the spirit of shredding often lost in the myriad of publicly traded companies, profit margins and share-holder accountability that make up the current snowboarding landscape. Although all in the name of fun and beer drinking, a definite air of competitiveness was present amongst the 35 or so contestants vying for the title of fastest shred.

Westbeach's Dave Short and posse, pre mayhem gondy ride.

Notable attendees included, Shin Campos, Rube Goldberg, Kevin Sansalone, Jon Cartwright, Colin Adair, Ryan Tiene, Steph Just, Beau Bishop, Wiley Tesseo, Robjin Taylor and all the local shreds that made this event great. The rules were simple: first person to reach the Creekside Underground skatepark from the top of Million Dollar ridge and successfully finish a beer would win the affections of his peers and $500.

grey-out.jpg

Weather? Dude it was epic...of course.

hock_robjn.jpg

Brian Hockenstein and Robjn Taylor. Check out the polar opposites of emotions.

In the end it was a mix of veterans Kevin “Snacksie-pants” Sansalone and Shin “Getsu” Campos racing spring-chickens John Caulfield and Anthony Weglan to the finish line. Their shred skills had brought them to the bottom in a possible record time of 4 minutes 53 seconds but the contest was ultimately decided by the beer chugging skills of Shin. Who says professional snowboarding doesn’t teach valuable life skills?

Perhaps the best part, and the intended effect, was the sense of camaraderie felt by everyone there. It was a great reason for people who are often segregated by work and busy winter schedules to come together and snowboard for the sake of snowboarding. Thanks Westbeach, see you next year.

This morning, Shota and Taro left for Japan.
Everybody is leaving Canada and it makes me sad...
This season, Shota had his first experience with snowmobiling.
When he started riding his sled, he wasn’t good at all but at the end of
the season he became jump crazy. :)
We got so many things done in the unfamiliar back country.
I hope Shota will enjoy and be relaxed in Japan.

I saw some ladybugs when I went snowmobiling last time.
I was surprised to see that ladybugs live up in the mountain too. So I looked
closely...
You know what? There were some heart shaped prints on their back?!
I felt a heart connection with the ladybug and that made me happy.
This was my first time to see ladybugs. They must have emerged from
hibernation.

Hello, it’s Keiji-filmer.

Yesterday Tadashi came back from his trip to Hawaii and Las Vegas and today he left for Japan to do some Burton and Redbull stuff.

What a busy guy!

Lately, we are having so much rain in Whistler.

It’s unusually cold and not very sunny for this time of year.

We have started to edit our film so some times I don’t leave the house all day.

Nobu is eating Pringles like a bear. Pringles is his dinner today.

In a few days on heartTV, the KFC face off between Dice-K
Maru (photographer) and Zizo (photographer) will be shown!

The rule is very simple. Who can eat the most Kentucky Fried Chicken...

We Do Not recommend attempting this...You should just enjoy KFC!

お楽しみに!
For you lazy guys who don't want to go click to HEART TV, I put a post here for you to enjoy!

なんせ働き者なんです。ほらこの通り。

2007.06.12 Tuesday

Hello, it’s Koni!

Today, we introduce one of the silent forces of heatfilms - KEIJI TAJIMA!!!

He is a really hard worker. See?

Originally Keiji was a rider and stormed into Canada to do some snowmobiling
with his friends.

When he snowboards without his camera bag, he is really excited
and has so much fun.

I believe that carrying that big, heavy, camera bag (it’s
even bigger than Keiji himself) is much more stressful work than we could
imagine.

He became Tadashi’s filmer since...I don’t know when, but now he can
even use a 16mm camera!

He has grown up...Even though, I got to know him only recently though ...haha.

I would like to write about Keiji more and more but I should stop here.

Good night.

There was a BURTON meeting at Odaiba, Tokyo!

It was such a productive meeting!

I was reminded that it’s important to listen to everybody’s opinions and also to express my opinions!

This morning, Shota suggested to go to the Tokyo Tower and we all went there.

It was really good exercise.

The Soba (buckwheat noodle) which we ate on our way home was so tasty.

I was super sweaty all day but enjoyed myself! Japan is HOT!!!

Hello this is Keiji.
We should leave the house once in a while so today I went skateboarding with Tadashi and Zizo.
The skateboard park is underground in a parking lot in Creekside so it’s nice that we don’t need to worry about the weather.
Tadashi looked happy to skateboard on his favorite new deck.
We had a good time and worked up a sweat.

This time of the year, we can have fun snowboarding, skateboarding,
mountain biking, rock-climbing and more.
It’s so nice and even nicer if we could have little more sunshine.

Park & Pipes - Whistler Blackcomb: Whistler Grooming Team
By: WhistlerBlackcomb

The Whistler Park groomers are the key to the success of the Whistler Habitat Park. Even though the Whistler Park team, day & night, are a smaller crew compared to Blackcomb, they continue to deliver a quality park that riders keep coming back for more. The popularity of the Whistler park continues to grow with a variety of different jumps & rail set ups & enough diversity that riders can choose from S to M to L lines to hit. The Whistler Park groomers have been instrumental in the planning & layout of the Park areas & it helps that 50% of the team came from the day time Parks crew & they all ride the goods they deliver! The Whistler drivers also run the Park Bully snow cats to build the Whistler park which is 100% built out of natural snow. Here’s a little back ground on our Whistler drivers:

Dave Murphy

With 7 years under his belt & coming from grooming the Blackcomb park, Dave was the natural choice to be our Whistler Park grooming lead hand. Dave also diversifies his skills by working in the Bike Park in the summer and volunteering his time for the Whistler Skateboard Association by assisting in the ramp construction in Creekside. Dave is an avid skateboarder & rides what he builds in the parks. “I like to be creative & try to make everyone happy with what I build. I ride what I build. I contribute my skate experience to the park grooming & shaping.”

Anto Orts

First season operating a snow cat full time but Anto has been in snow cats for several years via summer glacier operations & helping out the Park drivers last season. Anto was the lead hand for the Whistler Park for 5 years & knows what it takes to make a great park. Now on the other side of the wheel, so to say, Anto brings realism to the park product & ensures what we dream up is achievable to build & maintain via the snow cat. Anto is also responsible for most of the rail creations in the Whistler Park & assisted for the artwork on them. “I like to keep the park fun to ride & creative”.

Chris Lamb

Second season driving and previously a Park host & lead hand. Chris “Chops” Lamb got his first go @ driving a snow cat for summer glacier operations. Chops also works in the Whistler Bike Park during the summer months. “I really enjoy building jumps & riding them the next day unless it’s a pow day then I’m off to tear up the deep stuff. I’m really happy with the park set up over here as it’s all connected. I find this park is a bit more human as it offers features for never evers up to the seasoned shredders”.

KC Anderson

Second season running the rig & comes from a snowboard retail background. KC used to work for Showcase Snowboard Shop in the village and has been involved in front line sales in snowboard shops since 1997. “I ride & relate my work to snowboarding. I get to drive the best machines out there & be part of one of the largest grooming fleets in North America. I get top use my creativity in shaping & creating the hits. Go ride the Park!”

Well damm that was a quick holiday - got there after 48 hours because the plane cought fire (seriously) so missed my trip tto vancouver and headed straight there)

Whistler truly rocks (well Blackcombe does more)

Got there and had no snow for a few days so toured the mountain searching for powder stashes, found blackcombe to be the better mountain with more gnarly terrain (chutes , cliffs etc) up at the top of the t bars in and around the bowls and some great hikes - however the new sympanthy ampitheatre rules too.

then had abouy 4 days of powder so hit the mountain hard and fast

unfortunatley too fast as i broke my hand on a lame lazy 360.

carried on boarding though for the next few days allthough damm did it hurt when i landed on my hand

my sister had flu so missed a few days  and met some real cool people - wish i lived in vancouver as the people in whistler are so firendly

signing out as powder hound howoooooooooooooooooooo

ps creekside apres ski very nice bar

My Journal: yaaaaaay!
By: skibunnie2

I finally found a place to live in whistler and it's so rad. your typical old school family ski cabin, complete with old ski posters, bunk beds, and skis on the wall. I love it. It's also across the street from creekside so I don't have to bus to skiing! I'm here during the week and in vancouver on weekends. I'm so stoked for the rest of winter. pray for more snow!

My Blog: The Fall
By: 692Crew

Well since the last post what hasn't changed. Whistler is a ghost town as far as tourist go. More and more shredders keep apearing. Work at Zip Trek is still the same. We are all pretty much waiting for the winter season to arive. It get realy cold at night so now all we need is some snow. We have been busy skating creekside, village park and Squamish (sooo sick). Hopefuly i will have a little bit of a vacation over to alberta to see some hommies soon. I will start blogging in full force again once the snow fly's.

Whistler Skateboar Association and the Longhorn present to
you a Skateboard Rail jam Contest/ Fundraiser.

On Thursday, September 28, 2006, The Whistler Skateboard Association will be holding a fundraiser event at the Longhorn Saloon in Whistler. We will be setting up scaffolding on the patio and creating a street-style rail/ledge setup where skaters will be able to perform tricks on the obstacles and down the stairs. There will be two hours where the ramp is open for the public to have fun on (5pm to 7pm), and then in the evening (7pm to 9pm) we will be hosting a full-on competition where skaters will be competing for cash and prizes. As well, there will be live music and other stuff going on got anyone who comes to hang out and support the Whistler Skateboard Association, a non-profit community driven group formed to help take care of some of the many skateboard related issues in Whistler, especially the underground skatepark in Creekside. After the competition, there will be the video premiere of The Peanut Gallery, a locally produced skateboard film, and then the party will continue all night. This event will go on rain or shine, we have planned for tents and coverings for the ramps and of course, everyone can hang out inside,  listen to live music and, of course, have a great time.

We will be having three main categories of first-place prizes, with a $200 cash prize given to the skater who performs the best trick on the rail, on the ledges, and down the set of stairs, each. In addition to the cash prizes, we will be giving away lots of gear to the skaters for second and third places, as well as give-aways.. As well, there will be tons of shwag give-aways for the crowd, as well as raffles for some higher ticket items such as complete skateboards from the local shops.

Some of the supporters of this event are Longhorn Saloon, UnderExposed Media Group, Nomis Clothing, Westbeach the shop, Evolution, Katmandu, Red Bull, Gauge Clothing, SkateboardVillage.com and Ogio Bags.

So the Dominator and I drove up to Whis Saturday morning in her sweet ass jetta I named Roberta for what was going to be one of my most epic days riding this season. We arrived in Whis at about 10... grabbed a couple of Stellas out of the trunk and drank them infront of Dusty's as the sun rose... not a single cloud in the sky. Headed up the creekside gondy and on up the peak chair. I did a nice face plant getting off the peak chair but that happens everytime so it didnt shake me (i'm going to f*cking shank whoever built the downramp for that chair). After rippin it up for a while we met up with Sarah at the tea hut. The view from up there was amazing! Gorgeous sunshine and no clouds to be seen.. it was boiling hot out - i had to take off my sweater and just wear the outer shell of my jacket. The snow was perfect.. groomed and all soft and warmed up from the sun. After a steller race down burnt stew we went back up and took the saddle down to the valley. Fabulous day by far. ----went back up to sarah's place, got changed and headed for the village for some mmm mmm mmm mongoli grill. After our tummies were all full and happy it's PARTY TIME!

Oh and we must not forget ladies,
Go-go gadget shank gloves....
I got dibbs on copyrighting that shi*t!

Just wanted to welcome everyone to my blog.  For those of you I haven't heard from in a while or whatever the case may be here's a brief update on the world of C.Rok for the last little bit.

Summer was awesome, other than working two jobs I spent most of my time at the beach playin football, hackin around with a soccer ball and of course perusing the excellent array of bikini's modeled by Whsitler's finest.  (yeeeeah ladies)  Needless to say the whis-vegas talent show rarely dissapoints.  Also spent some time at the underground Creekside skate park, that place is dope, big ups to all the contributors.  I took off on an east coast mission toward the end of august to visit some family on the magdalen Islands and in Cape Breton, then made it down to Halifax in time for my little cousin's wedding.  What a Party!  Haha, east coast style it was siiiick, hooked up with some old friends from Bedford (I used o live there for a few years in the early 90's) and rocked out with lotsa family at the Halifax Gentlemen's club among other spots.

I made it back to Whissie (still in my pinstripe from the wedding) and back to the grind at work.  The E-Dubz and I moved out of our dungeon on Beaver Lane and hooked up with Jay Best (DJ-Shitty Pants) and Jay Pujol for a pretty dope pad up in the cay.  Housewarming/x-mas Party TBA)

And then there was my Birth-Week.

For those of you who made it out that week many thanx for a rad time and I hope you still have a taste for your favorite drink.  We successfully hit every bar on their main nights that week and I even made it out to one of those full moon parties.  The fellas was lookin sharpt and my ladies was lookin pretty.  My sincere apologies for any injuries/broken hearts that insued from that week, it's all a little hazy.  Shoutouts to E-Dubz for the financing, Bubbles and DSP for the Garf's Evac a nd all the ladies for the hugs n kisses.

Soon after the fabled 17th of October was openning day on mighty blackcomb Nov. 4.  I think it caught many of us by surprise but it was definately a good one.  Between the video premiers, snowboard school "meetings" and apres sessions we've been holdin it down good thise year.  I've decided that sleeping is for when you're dead so I'm working overnights at the hotel and riding/coaching during the day, just to get by, just to get by, just to get by...

Other than that it's been a prettygreat year so far in the wide world of sports.  My Sens are lightin it up around the league and the Seahawks are rollin over their oppnents in their '06 campaign.

Anway there's the update to present, keep an eye on this blog for upcoming events and shred missions.  Those of you interested I'm on the mountain most days so hollah the hotline if ya wanna shred.  I'll keep yall posed on our upcoming x-mas party and for those ASE fans out there, Anthem Syndicate Entertainment will be hosting some more events this coming season at an club near you.

Shoutouts to Ullar the Snow God, the Ridge Runner Jib Line, Small C-Cups, Fine lower Backs and stompin that shi*t.

Rhyme of the blog - "People gettin mad cause I floss so bad, I ain't a wres-tl-er, but I'll put yo bitch in the Boston crab.

Track of the blog - Roll wit da M.V.P - Stagga  Lee.

PeacE!
