Hi all
I busted my right distal radius into multiple pieces(comminuted)about two wks ago which led to other issues: stiff and unusable primary hand. I wasnt able to find any blogs out there that went thru the day to day recovery so i hope i can be there for anyone in the future who might want more info. Its hard to type so thats probably why there are few blogs chronicling this.

How it happened: Some might feel indestructible blasting down or jumping up as fast without a worry in the world and have a glory accident story. But my story is very pedestrian. I basically modified the way i fell due to a series of crashes(high speed near bottom of the mountain on the rear right deltoid). So the day of the injury my shoulder was so sprained i couldnt raise it above my head.. But I still went boarding the next day (mlk wknd at squaw valley) and it was my toe edge on ice near kt22 lift traversing to red dog in the afternoon that did me in.

After the incident I knew right away something was wrong since the wrist was deformed, swelling,  and my fingers I couldnt move them. After the doctor onsite 'reduced' it(pulled it back into place) I felt better although far from normal.
Fast forward to vicodin/naprosyn and a surgery to correct everything. By wednesday after I was in surgery in which the surgeon put a titanium plate and screws. Post surgery, I did not feel like myself at all(low energy sleeping too much eating simple and not desiring meat/wine, X games were inspiring tho). It has now been 10 days since surgery. It is a real bitch to sleep at night since the pain is throbbing and unending. I went off the meds though since it was making me wake up super late and groggy although I was beginning to get addicted to the vicodin.
I guess my right hand still works a little bit as I can grip some items but it feels robotic slow and stiff. Pressing buttons is even a strange experience. I started typing but it is still very foreign. Doc says I will start pt after the splint comes off 6wks post surgery.. And advises me to move as much as possible.. I dont know but Im more focused on writing/using my hands than getting back on the slopes. I do still have a season pass tho that I need to utilize.
I am really hoping that the pain will go away so I can sleep at night, and that I can type more proficiently. After I would like to write. No idea how many days that will take though.. I wonder if I will be able to brush my teeth before beingable to write normally again. Cheers.

I find posting once every two years is best. One it takes me that long to be creative enough to entertain you monkies (I mean that lovingly) and two... I'm lazy.

Anyway, so the day starts off balls ass cold. What is balls ass cold you ask? Well, balls ass cold is somewhere below "Holy Jewish Christ it's cold!" and just slightly above "Dude, I can't feel my nuts!". Tim and Dan can fill you in more on how cold it was, since they decided to sleep in their car... on the mountain... at 5am... with the heat off. Yeah, them Maryland boys ain't all there.

So as I was saying, it was balls ass cold, and we decide to warm up with a nice easy run. Now this run, had this stuff called packed powder on it. I'm not sure what it really was because it was light and fluffy and responsive and easy to ride. Where I'm from, packed powder is the frozen painfull shi*t you get the day after all the man made snow froze. I have to say, I like Vermont's version a lot better. Anyway, we're on this run, and there's this little roller of a jump at the start. Now, everyone is hitting this thing and landing with ease. I says to myself "SELF! that looks fun and easy so I'm gonna try it!". Sadly, what my mind failed to take into account was that the ones who went over it where Dan, Tim, and a few others who have been riding a hell of a lot longer than me and therefore, can actually ride really well. So just because they make something look easy, it may not actually be so... easy. Apparently, I left this part of my brain back in VA. So I tuck and make a straight line for this thing hit the top and leap. It's at this point that I realize I have no earthly clue what in the blue flying catholic %$&* to do whilst airborne. This becomes even more obvious when I land with all the grace of a drowned bubonic rat. But this isn't Liberty, so the landing area wasn't made of rock. Unfazed, I get up and ride down.

From there we wait and get on the tram. The tram by the way is the slowest means known to man to get people up a mountain. Seriously. Anyway, we get to the top of this beast and I'm looking around at the kind of terrain I've never ever ridden before. I can't wait to ride down this bitch! So I strap and and get ready to roll. It's at this point that I realize one of the straps on my binding has snapped in half making my foot wobble around in my binding like a drunken irishman on st patty's day. Getting down is going to be a bit of a challenge. The only thing I can do at this point is ride down and pray for a repair at the base. So Carmen and I take off for the base.

I will point out that the ride down was pretty awesome. Especially for a mid atlantic rider. Lots of terrain, snow, and no ice. Again, NO ICE. Hah! Anyway, I'm almost all the way down I start to get cocky again. Yes I know, not exactly a bright move when im working with half a binding on my back foot. Like I said, I left that part of my brain at home. There are these nice rollers/hills/whatever the hell you call them, that were just screaming for me to get some speed and jump at the top. Soo, I jump em. And amazingly, I land the first one. Excited, I tuck and get ready for the next one. Up I go and again I land without bailing. At this point I'm flying down the hill and there's one more coming. I figure go for 3!! Haha, yeah bad idea. I tuck and throw everything I have into my legs to jump the last one sending me into a low orbit. I try to land but my balance is off and I come crashing down right on my head. That's when the lights go out. But only for a second or two. Thank god for brain buckets. But this has certainly put my ego in check for the rest of the trip... Kinda

Finally at the bottom, a little woozy, I go into the shop in the hopes that they sell flows. In the middle of burton country (yeah). They don't in fact, no one does... anywhere. I'm stuck buying the only large size bindings they have. a $70 pair of Burton Freestyles aka $70 of pure unholy suck. But whatever, I meet up with everyone and again head up the tram. We're headed for something called the ugly tree. I don't know which of the 80 billion trees was the ugly one but I'll get to that shortly. So we're riding to this thing and I'm trying to get used to the new bindings. I'm kind of getting the hang of it and let myself get some decent speed on the way to this glade run. That's when I catch an edge and come down on what is becoming my prefered landing cushion... my head. Honestly, I'm pretty sure there's some important SQL knowledge that i've forever lost up that hill somewhere. I can still tie my own shoes though so I'm good. However, I've managed to shatter my goggle lenses in this fall. Yeah I don't know how I managed that either. See below for pics

Now for the trees. Keep in mind that I've never even really been on a black before. Sure I rode a handfull of them at 7 springs for one day ut those are about as challenging as picking my nose. This is a run through trees n shi*t... TREES! But I'm with a bunch of people who know what they're doing so I'll be all right... Kinda. They head on through these trees and in a matter of 3.4 seconds, I've lost all of them. I can't see them, I can't hear them, they're just gone lol. Now these new bindings aren't responding very well to my "oh shi*t turn now!" commands. So I'm spending most of my time on my ass, and my back, etc etc. It takes a retarded amount of time to finally work my way out of the trees. Once I do, I find that I'm all kinds of alone. So I spend the rest of the day exploring this huge mountain. Next time, I'll bring a radio that works!

Friday was a different day. After some inventive binding "repair", I'm back on my flows. And I brought some spare lenses for my goggles so I'm back to working condition again. Time to make another run through some trees!

I've learned a few lessons about riding through trees with this group. 1) Never follow rob because he loves his superman impression. But unlike superman, he doesn't stay airborne. 2) Follow Zach (cifex), because he takes lines through trees that people can actually survive. 3) Never ever ever follow Tim through the trees, unless you brought your golf clubs, and a shovel, oh and a tent. More on that below At this point I'm doing a decent job keeping up with these folks. Again they've been doing this a hell of a lot longer than me and I sure as hell would never attempt these runs on my own. This is one of the things I liked best about this trip. Hitting terrain that i never thought I could do and pushing myself damn hard to keep up.

Anyway, I follow Zach as best I can through these trees. I gotta admit, riding through trees is a huge rush. I've never done anything like it before. It's better than snorting blow off a hooker's ass! After a few hundred falls, and crashes into trees, I pop out onto the trail where everyone is waiting. Somehow, I've managed to beat Tim out of the woods. Which is odd because it took me just under a decade to get out. Then I found out why.

Apparently, Tim decided he wanted to go golfing. f*ck this riding shiz, boy wanted to break out his clubs and hit the back nine! Soo, he headed for the golf course. Which is obviously well out of boundes. For some reason Tim thinks this is a really good idea anyway. Even though he didn't bring his gold clubs... and there's snow on the ground. It's the little details that count. By the time he figures this out, he's waist deep in powder in the middle of a ravine on the opposite side of Vermont. So while we wait for the gallant golfer to carry his lanky ass back to the rest of us, we decide to keep ourselves entertained.

Dan works on his backflip (not quite as funny as Andrea's backflip but with much less ankle twistage).

Waiting for Tim

Several others play jump the tree stump.. thingy.

All the while shouting for Tim so he could get a bead on where vermont was again. (I think he cried). Dan was a bit upset that he was the only one shouting but that was because we were all laughing too god damn hard and the filth flowing from his pie hole like a raunchy poet. If Danimal was a religion, I'd f*cking worship it. Apologies to all the random folk riding by that heard what was said. But it was epic funny!

I'd write more but I think this post if long enough already. Needless to say I had the time of my life. I broke bindings, a helmet, goggle lenses, my ass, bought 2 pairs of bindings, got a horrid chest cold (btw, you can get a great buzz off of 5 advil, 3 strong swigs of robotussin, a cup of thera flu, and 4 sudafed caplets.), bit out a chunk of my mouth, spit blood in front of some random skier (that was pretty funny) and was molested by more than one tree (It wasn't gay because I didn't push back) But at least I didn't slip getting out of the hottub and bust my ass like a certain porch flying canadian

We went skateboarding to Pemberton yesterday.
Pemberton is just 30min. north of Whistler by car and it’s a town richly
endowed with nature.
There are farms, ranches and golf courses so my impression of Pemberton is
like “an easygoing town.”

初めはローカルの子供達がいっぱいいたけど、すぐに帰ってしまったのでパークは貸し切り状態。
There were many local kids but after a while they all went home so it was

From Taka...

I joined the CAMP OF CHAMPIONS of Canada from the end of June to the beginning of July.
This time I practiced a lot of kickers and rails rather than the usual half pipes that I ride...
I had fun times and was blessed with good weather.

After this I’m heading to Mt. Hood!
I haven’t practice half pipe for a while but I can hang tough at Mt.
Hood because I learned something at the COC camp...I hope?

and anyone who looks here knows it!

Since my last one, I have bought another car (pug 106 GTi), been promoted at work (now store manager), moved house and been on holiday to France. Not snowboarding though - thats coming up in a few months.

I now manage a mobile phone shop and do ok with it. Its nice and quiet most of the time but it does have its busy moments! I regularly get odd looks from customers who think that, as manager, I should have the most up-to-date phone but instead I have a 5 year old Nokia thats stood up to some brutal crashes whilst snowboarding and kiteboarding. Why would I want to change it?

Went to the final round of the BTCC (Touring cars) yesterday - a good day! Took some mates from the Nissan SX owners club (www.sxoc.com - I'm Teggers on there too!) and we all had a great time - especially as we got VIP tickets from my work!!

Well, I might write another addition here soon. Although it could be another 6 months!! At which point I will have been snowboarding again!!!

Its early morning, the sun is just rising over the eastern horizon… The clouds lay low, because of the soft and precious morning dew… As many lay asleep, still trying to gain strength for today's work day, here I stand on the side of an unknown and unconquered mountain top…I take a moment to sit and listen to all that is around…though silence fulfills the air, I hear things that many humans wouldn't count as hearing… I hear things like determination, skill, power, fear, vengeance, pride, and courage… And right as the sun light gently presses against my face, I am off… Soaring down the side of the mountain, go here and there… Jumping and falling off cliffs that most would fear, I take them on and perfectly land, thus continuing down the hill… Swerving to the left and right, it is like I am floating through the clouds of air, nothing can stop me from enjoying this moment… All of the sudden, an avalanche occurs, and I feel the rush of snow behind me… I decide then to head straight down to attempt to flee from the bewildering snow… Colors start to fade together and sounds become muffled as my speed increases dramatically… I see this ledge coming up, and even though I have no idea what is on the other side, I take it… Within seconds I am flying through the air, probably 100's of feet up above the ground… The avalanche is right below me, if I were to fall down right now, I wouldn't make it… But to my luck, the avalanche has made trees bend, so I head straight for them… B*ng! My board crashes against a bending tree sending wood pieces everywhere… Balance is the key to success, and like in an asian movie, I hop from tree to tree grinding my way down the mountain side… The forest has protected me and stopped the avalanche… And as I ride down the last part of the mountain side, I slow down to stop and turn on the chair lift… "Dude, where were you man? You just missed this awesome avalanche…" My buddy would say to me as we attend our jobs… And my reply would be, "Oh, just out snowboarding."…

OK! here's the story, i was going up to do a flat rail (angled down) the kicker is like 4ft high and the gap is like 3 ft, anyways i jumped off the kicker but i had too much speed then i was about 3/4 down the rail (still in the air) i was drifting right so i tried to font lip the rail, well i didn't have enough board over the rail, so my board slipped off (i still had control) then my board landed on the ground but as soon as i landed it hit the last downmember (the rail that goes into the snow that holds the rail up) my board popped up and i went shin first into the downmember, then i just got wrapped around the rail giving my shin all the blow and stopping me immediatly, someone said it was the worst crashes they have ever seen. i thought my legged snapped at first but i got up right away to see if my leg was still together (if i wasn't i would have fell haha) then i just boarded down to the chalett and sat lol. i'm out for awhile from boarding.. GRR!

this ankle pic is 5 days later (taken like 1 hour before i posted this) GAHH! ankle now swollen and now is bruising right above the bottom of the foot? i don't get it, oh well

Researchers from countries as diverse as the United Kingdom, United States, Sweden, New Zealand, and Canada have made some unusual observations about the relationships people have with their cars. This includes what your car colour choices may reveal, and what applying a gender and a name to your vehicle may indicate about you. Even the astrological implications regarding the likelihood of accidents have been looked at.
Seriously folks, it's true.
Colorado State University psychology professor Jacob Benfield and his colleagues concluded in the journal: "Personality and Individual Differences," that about one quarter of people named their cars, and about half thought of their cars as either masculine or feminine.
His study also concluded that people who name their cars and apply a gender to them, "scored significantly higher than non-naming-vehicle-drivers on verbal aggression, physical aggression, driving anger and pejorative labeling/verbally aggressive thinking" – all of which would suggest a higher likelihood of car insurance issues somewhere down the road.
For anyone who occasionally wonders if some researchers have too much time on their hands, consider the following:
From Wikipedia:
  • "A Swedish study found pink cars safest, with black cars most likely to be involved in crashes (Land transport NZ 2005)."
  • "An Auckland, New Zealand study found a significantly lower risk of serious injury in silver cars; with high risks for brown, black, and green cars. (Furness et al, 2003)"
As details are sketchy, one is forced to wonder whether the researchers in the Swedish study applied any equalization to their calculations. Seriously, how many pink cars have you seen lately? Perhaps pink is a more popular colour for cars in Sweden, but we've never even seen a pink Volvo. Also, consider how many black cars there are on the roads. Is this the real reason that black cars appear to be more likely to be involved in an accident? Or are they harder to see at night? We can't say for sure, and apparently neither can the car insurance companies, or else they'd charge accordingly.
According to colormatters.com, the colour you choose for your car gives some insight into your personality. Apparently, if you choose:
  • White: You could be status-seeking and an extrovert.
  • Black: You're somewhat more likely to be aggressive, an outsider or a rebel.
  • Silver: You're probably cool, calm and slightly aloof, - probably ambitious too.
  • Green: It could be an indication of hysterical tendencies.
  • Blue: It's likely that you're reflective, introspective and cautious.
  • Gray: You're dedicated to work, and generally a calm and sober individual.
  • Yellow: You probably like novelty and are idealistic.
  • Red: You move and talk quickly and you're full of zest, energy and drive.
  • Pink: You're probably a kind, loving, gentle and affectionate person.
  • Cream: It could indicate a self-contained and controlled individual.
We have yet to find an auto insurance company that asks what the colour of your car is when determining your car insurance rates, and, thank goodness for that. What would be next? Questions about your astrological sign?
In fact, some researchers in the U.S. and Canada, have gone so far as far as to try to correlate astrological signs with a higher or lower likelihood of auto accidents. Fortunately for us, each study seems to come to a different conclusion.
Imagine the following: "Yes Mrs. Smith, we know that you've had a perfect driving record for the last fifteen years, but it concerns us that you keep referring to your vehicle as "My Black Stallion," and also, we see here by your birth date, that you're a Pisces with an Aries moon and Aquarius rising. The data strongly suggests that your luck simply can't hold out much longer, so, we're going to have to cancel your auto insurance policy."
Thankfully, the actuaries who develop the calculations that auto insurance companies use to determine auto insurance premiums, continue to remain "skeptical" of any apparent correlations, and continue to look to the more traditional, statistically relevant and somewhat more "boring" methods of calculating your auto insurance risk, namely:
  • Your age and location.
  • Your previous driving record.
  • And, the type of vehicle that you drive.
Smart folks those actuaries.
Now if an actuary were giving you advice on your car insurance premiums, they'd tell you to shop around for several quotes before you buy. They may even recommend kanetix as the best place to get your car insurance quote, to save you both time and money. Besides, the alignment of the stars today, suggest that it's a great day for finding a little extra coin in your pocket.

So if my next vehicle is blue...does that mean I'm going to be a cautious driver?...oh hell no!

Hobbies - Fish
As for other stuff--- One of my recent hobbies is tropical fish. For the last three years I've had a very pretty betta kinda like the one:
betta[1].jpg (this isn't my actual betta, just a pic of one off the internet that looks similar to him. Mine acutally changes color in the light -- when he's fiesty, he turns a puplish color on the body and end of his fins get reddish, when passively swimming and most of the time, he's blue. When he's napping he turns mostly green. At age 3½ my betta is still going strong. About a month ago I went to WalMart and picked up a 10 gallon aquarium set up and have just had him in it. I've been meaning to add "friends" and did that today. Today, I got three corydoras, each look like these pics:
cory3.jpg
So far, the most active little one is my albino cory.
The next favorite:
cory1.jpgIt's not the prettiest but he's also active and swimming around. The albino and patch corys are about 1.5 cm in length from head to tail(that's just a touch over half an inch).  If they ever "outgrow" my tank I'll take them when they're all nice and big to the local fish store and with store credit, exchange them and get smaller ones again 2-3 years down the road.

The third fish I got is a spotted cory. He looks like:
cory2.jpgSo far, he's the most boring inactive fish. All three came from a different tank at the store, so who knows if he was already ill. He may just be scared though too. He's bigger than the other two at 4.7 cm (nearly 2 inches) from tip to tail.
My betta is the biggest with his body alone(not including his long flowing fins) measuring in at approx. 6.2 cm(about 2.5 inches).
Fish UPDATE: Okay, I disovered something interesting since getting my new cory today. The spotted one in the pic like above is pregnant with a fat belly. After doing some online research, I now understand why the fish have been acting a bit unusual. An interesting tidbit on how corys mate that I found on the net: During breeding, the males will exhibit a mating dance, touching the female's dorsal. If the female is receptive, the male will vibrate the body to initate spawning.... The female then sucks the sperm out into her mouth from the male's genital pore. At this point the female ejects a batch of eggs which is uniquely held between her veentral fins. And after finding a suitable site, she then spits out the sperm onto the site and attaches the eggs, at which time fertilisation occurs.

After my vacation in the next week or so I plan to add a couple of more fish.. probably 6-8 neons, or maybe 3-4 platties which are kinds of fish that will get along with my betta. Someday I'll even get pics of my actual tank and fish; my OLD digital camera isn't working, my web cam isn't working, so it may be awhile. The scanner works but I can't exactly lay the fishtank on that ;)

WHAT THE?!?
So while doing an internet search to check the correct spelling of a medication, I see this google ad to the side:

YEAH RIGHT!! Everyone has 2 grand to buy pills with . It's a cancer drug, but still...  yikes!

This last weekend a bunch of us hit up our spot and did some hiking. I brought my video camera and got some good shots. I posted the fun crashes of me and my son. Hopefully next weekend I can get some good "landed" shots. I had to be a bit conservative. I was wearing my shoulder brace, but I was a bit nervous considering I dislocated it the previous Monday. One of these days I will learn to just chill out on it... but not today!!

Shooting the video sparked up my video editing interest again. Brought me back to college. That was my original idea when I started school. 3D animation and video editing. Ended up in Web and Graphic Design. What a let down :). So, I'm back at it messin' around with video. I hope to put together a fun, 05 / 06 season video and burn it to DVD. I'll need more footage though, considering I started late. I'll have to get the camera out when we're partyin' too. No sense in missing the fun stuff!!

OH, yeah, almost forgot!! My stupid ass binding broke again on Saturday!! The new Flows I got to replace my Cinches which broke. The shaft that holds the highback lever just snap right off. Turns out, there was a recall on those because of a cheap aluminum shaft. I rented an option Free Plus 162, with Option bindings so I could keep going for the rest of the day. Nice board. Wouldn't mind hittin' up an Option next year!! I did get my Flows fixed though. They put the replacement bolt in that Flow kicked them down with. They didn't snap Sunday. The real test will be this weekend. Can I make it two weekends in a row!! :)

All over the mountain there were big marks from peoples asses or heads smashing into the snow... so that was my tuesday night in a nut shell...

As for wednesday (today) i took a ferry in 70km/h winds over to naniamo... Drove up to Campbell River only to realize that its snowing with flakes the size of a small dog or a large cat... i kid you not.... I have never seen snowflakes soo big... Anyways i wasnt able to get done what i needed to and now my boss is pissed at me... because i took a chance and it didnt work out...

Well, the Olympics are on right now, so I'm gonna talk about 'em.

Lots of people don't like Olympics, but they're part of what got me into boarding. Half-pipe was awesome, Day 2, I watched it live, Shaun White had an amazing run. And god! If there are any sick people out there, watch the luge! There are some damn nasty crashes!

All of the Olympians truly inspire me, and on my TV, you have three choices, Olympics, American TV, or Olympics. So, I choose Olympics. Boarder cross is gonna be on 7:30 am, the women are up, so check it out!

See ya on the hill,

Logan.

Ok all you people out there I got one thing to say: skaters, yeah sure we all know how HARD it is and all, but when it comes to injury well I just got to call ya'll pussies. I know I'm going to take a lot of bad rep from this but just hear me out alright! I go to the skatepark and watch the skaters and knowing how hard it may be to land a trick, I hardly EVER see you fall hard, and just looking for ppl with injurys today I saw NONE. You just BAIL! Bail, bail, bail, BAIL!! When I go off and mess up I go DOWN HARD! What do I do? I take my mountainboard and I ride skateparks! And with 16lbs and an overextended wheelbase I find myself getting hung up on coping a LOT, sending me down on my hips like CRAZY! Just today in an 8+ft vert bowl I aired out, pulled a sick stalefish, then came down catching the coping, and falling sideways to the bottom! just imagine airing out, then getting a foot stuck on the lip, and continue falling sidways with 16 bulky pounds strapped on and you'll have an idea of what I'm talking about! Not to mention all the wrist injuries, I land on them 90% of my crashes and as a result they are now permanaintly screwed up! They kill, all the time! But I mainly have to say this for all you skaters talkin trash on streetboarding and yes inline skating! Sure its easy to go big, but the RISK IS SO MUCH HIGHER. And most ppl who skate would NEVER attempt what they attempt, so just drop it! P.S. A backflip to fifty-fifty is SICK and I don't care what you have to say about that. (Streetboard World Championships right here in Utah, SLC!!)

yea, so it has been raining a lot here.

Storms spawn landslides, twisters in California
Six dead in recent storms

Tuesday, February 22, 2005 Posted: 10:19 AM EST (1519 GMT)

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- A deadly series of storms across California spawned everything from tornadoes to avalanches, flooding freeways with steady rain and sending rivers of mud crashing through homes.

At least six deaths have been blamed on the storm, including a woman buried by an avalanche north of Lake Tahoe and others who were victims of landslides, traffic accidents, falling trees and flooding.

Mudslides forced Amtrak officials to suspend service from Los Angeles to Santa Barbara at least through Tuesday. Service between Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo wasn't expected to resume until next Monday. During the weekend, Metrolink also had canceled rail service for parts of the area because of flooding.

Forecasters said Tuesday that the long-lived storm system would bring at least another inch of rain to Southern California but was losing strength and could move out of the region by Wednesday afternoon. A flash flood watch remained in effect Tuesday for much of Southern California.

"I think we've probably seen the worst of the storm," said Ted MacKenchnie, a National Weather Service meteorologist.

Dozens of homes were evacuated or red-tagged -- marked as uninhabitable -- because they were threatened by sliding hillsides, authorities said.

Northern California also was hit by severe thunderstorms, hail and at least two afternoon tornadoes in the Sacramento area that uprooted trees and damaged roofs and fences.

The California Highway Patrol reported more than 300 crashes in a 14-hour period in Southern California, compared with 50 to 75 accidents on a normal, dry day.

A section of the Hollywood Freeway in Los Angeles was shut down for several hours late Monday because it was flooded by as much as 5 feet of water.

The wild weather came from a series of storms that began battering the state on Thursday, dumping 6.5 inches of rain in downtown Los Angeles.

A total of 31.40 inches of rain has fallen since July 1, the start of the region's annual "water year" measuring period, the fifth wettest on record. The record is 38.18 inches, set in 1883-84.

The consecutive days of rain has proven too much for saturated hillsides in Southern California.

A mudslide ripped into the bedroom of a home in the San Fernando Valley, killing by burying him under four feet of mud.

And in Orange County's rural Silverado Canyon area east of Irvine, boulders crashed into an apartment and crushed 16-year-old girl Caitlin Oto. "If you saw the damage up there, it almost looks like the houses exploded, the way it went completely through the homes," said Capt. Stephen Miller of the Orange County Fire Authority.

In Northern California, 45-year-old Gerilyn Marie Ewing, of Reno, Nev., was killed by an avalanche Sunday while skiing between the Sugar Bowl and Squaw Valley ski resorts north of Lake Tahoe. Up to 20 inches of snow had fallen in the area since Thursday.

Harbor Patrol officers had to battle high waves and wind early Monday off the coast of Santa Barbara to rescue a man whose sailboat was adrift with no mast and no engine power. They couldn't get close enough to pull him from the vessel, so they had him jump overboard and then dove in after him.

"You couldn't see what was coming. We were holding on for dear life," said Officer Jan Martinez. "The waves were coming at such close intervals we'd push up through one, then come down just as another one was breaking on us."

In Glendale, a foothill community north of Los Angeles, about 30 people in 11 homes were evacuated early Monday because of mudslides and flooding.

And in the coastal community of La Conchita, where a landslide killed 10 people last month, six of the 39 people still living in the town elected to leave because of the heavy rain and a steady flow of mud on the bluffs behind the town, said Capt. Bill Flannigan of the Ventura County Sheriff's Department. However, no major new slides were reported in the county.
