WHISTLER GETS SET TO SPOTLIGHT BIGGEST TALENTS IN MUSIC, SPORTS AND ARTS, APRIL 11-20

Preparations underway to ready Whistler for

13th TELUS World Ski and Snowboard Festival

WHISTLER, BC, April 10, 2008 –

The TELUS World Ski and Snowboard Festival’s unique fusion sports, music and arts gets underway April 11 in Whistler and operations crews are busy getting the resort ready for ten days and nights of non-stop events and entertainment.

In the Village, where 11cm of snow fell earlier in the week to freshen up the 265cm base, 10 tonnes of scaffolding is being set up to build viewing platforms, the Pontiac Battle of the Bands stage, and the Outdoor Concert Series Main Stage, where headline acts De La Soul, Lil’Jaz, The John Butler Trio, Blackalicious, The Trews, Ill Scarlett, Daniel Wesley, Julian Marley and Michael Franti & Spearhead will perform free concerts daily from 2:30pm.

On the mountain, 3 different competition venues are being constructed, providing elite level features to showcase the world’s best skiers and snowboarders. The Big Air (finals taking place at the base of Whistler, April 12, 8pm) will feature a brand new design, with a 65 foot step-over gap jump that Whistler Blackcomb Events Manager, YP (Peter) Young says, “will allow the riders to go higher and farther than ever before.”

In addition, the 500 foot long Superpipe has been rebuilt to feature sheer 20 foot walls that will see riders and skiers at the April 16-19 competition gain maximum amplitude.

The Chief of Course for the Big Air and the Superpipe, master park-builder Steve Petrie, is also the designer and builder of the 2010 Olympic Halfpipe.

With Whistler Blackcomb’s talented crew of groomers and pipe builders logging more than 350 hours on the venues, and more than 7 million gallons of water pumped through the system by the snowmaking team, the Superpipe and Big Air jump will be ready to draw the best performances from over 200 skiers and snowboarders from around the world.

Saturday, April 12 will also see Blackcomb Mountain host the resurrected Orage Masters, a slopestyle contest that features the hottest skiers in the new school world, on a course designed by pro athlete, Vernon lad, TJ Schiller and built by a Whistler Blackcomb team under the guidance of park builder extaordinaire, Marty Gautrey.

Sporting events with a non-stop mind-blowing soundtrack is not all that’s in store at the thirteenth TELUS World Ski and Snowboard Festival.

The event’s artistic side has been nurtured over previous years, with 10,000 tickets available in a showcase of mountain culture, from Icon Gone, a debate about whether the best of Whistler is history (April 13), to the Schick Extreme 3 Fashion Exposed (April 18), to the theatre performance of The Chairlift Revue (April 20).

The Festival’s multi-media visual feasts, the Olympus Pro Photographer Showdown (April 17), the D250 Filmmaker Showdown and Second Cuts Screening (April 15-16), and the world premiere of mountain bike film Seasons (April 11), guarantee that every seat feels front and centre to capture the action with the ground-breaking multimedia installation, currently being constructed.

The 6-sided screen, dubbed “the Borg”, is being installed by a 10 person team at Rocky Mountain Productions, with 900 foot of truss, 7 miles of cable, and a total amplification of sound of 55,000W. (That’s nearly 800 times the sound of your home stereo, according to the godfather of the installation, Scott McPhee.)

The Borg will then be struck down to make room for the Festival’s finale, the DJ Experience, featuring DJ Dan and Donald Glaude, Mark Farina and Mat the Alien, ensuring that the party doesn’t end when the sun goes down, April 19.

175 pieces of original art from leading street artists around the world are being hung in the 10,000 square foot gallery foyer of the TELUS Conference Centre, for the urban art exhibit, Brave Art, April 11-18. The exhibit receptions on April 12 and 13 will feature live painting from over 40 artists.

Whistler is a hive of activity, preparing the resort for ten days and nights of non-stop events and entertainment, that will turn Whistler into ground zero for the biggest celebration of mountain life, starting tomorrow.

You all know the game. Lots of riding, sunshine, concerts, parties and pictures that help you piece together memories after the fact...
I'm also trying to undermine society and throw a little session for SB.commers during the partying on the mountain, so here it is.
Unofficial Snowboard.com Backcountry Jump Session
(also open to non-sb.com members if you want to bring them)
When: Wednesday April 16th, 2008
Where:
Either at 8:20 am at the GBB patio (the one next to the Longhorn where lessons meet up, in the summer the place is called Garbanzo Bike and Bean);
or at 9 am in the back corner of Pikas at the Roundhouse on Whistler Mtn. (Pikas is the downstairs cafeteria area at the Roundhouse) for the folks that want to upload from Creekside and meet us there.
after we meet and rally the troops, we'll head for Flute Bowl and take a short groomed hike (about 600m or so I think) up to the top and cross onto the backside. We're not going far out of bounds so you don't need skins or snowshoes. I want everybody to be able to come so we're not doing anything crazy.
What to bring: All your riding gear, food for lunch, a shovel if you have one (keeping in mind the more shovels the easier it is to build a jump and the more time we get to spend sessioning it), cameras (I'll bring mine, but anybody with real photography skills would be even better), and whatever else you need for a day in the alpine - I strongly suggest a spare layer, a pair of sunglasses for hiking/digging, spare gloves since you'll get wet digging, and sunscreen to keep it to goggle tan and not burn (christ I sound like my mother). If you have avalanche gear, bring it if you want, but don't stress too much, the spot doesn't face exposure from above and is a mellow enough slope that it's not a serious slide risk (in fact the run back down to the lift once you get back into bounds is far worse then the out of bounds area where the spot is).
It's all for fun and we're not pro caliber riders or anything so don't be intimidated, we'll build something that everybody's able to hit and have fun with, plus it's going to be a good opportunity to meet members of the site in snowboarding (which is the main goal) while we take a momentary break from the partying that is Telus... You know, this is a snowboarding website so why not have a little fun on the mountain.

So if you're interested or want any information about this, give me a holler. Let me know if you're in so I get an idea of the numbers.

The snow keeps falling here in Whistler. We now have had 29 feet of snow that has fallen so far this year and over 3 months left of the ski season. We are offering training all the way until the end of April for our groups and custom training into May. We are busy planning our 'World Trips' and the NZ Trip for September is up on the web site if you would like to come.

Over the past month we have had loads going on.

We successfully completed our second road trip for the season down to Mt Baker with our 12 week campers and were met with fantastic conditions. It was quite the adventure as I found out that my wife Karen was going into labour just as we were putting in our first powder runs of the day at Mt Baker. The day was a real blast for me. We shredded powder all morning with sunny skies and then rallied back to Vancouver to make it just in time for Baylee to be born - you really can't beat that for a day to remember. Check out www.pro-ride.com/diary.cfm for the pictures of the day.

Instructor Results

We have had excellent results from our Level 2 crew who did their exams and a couple of them who wanted to work have already been hooked up with employment with Whistler Blackcomb for the remainder of the season. A good friend of ours who does the hiring for the school came by the camp house and chatted with the crew about how to gain employment with the mountain and at the end of his session offered work to the people who were interested.

Jump Day

We have a backcountry style jump day planned for Friday which should be a blast. We have snow forecasted all the way to Friday which is going to make for super soft landings. As a bonus, Cooler - European Women's Life Style Magazine will be on hand to document the activities. Jump day just happens to correspond with one of the campers birthdays so it is going to be quite an affair.

Coach Lance Cyr Superman Front Flip

Competition News

Lots of great results this month from the crew. Ryan Rausch has been travelling the globe and is dominating as usual. Crispin Lipscomb was in Italy for the World Cup Half Pipe and took the win for Canada. This is only a week after winning the Showcase Showdown. The boy is on fire!

Next Years Programs

All of next years pricing and dates are up on the web site so now is a great time to secure your place for the long term programs. We have already had quite a few bookings so if you are keen please drop us a line to let us know. You can register at www.pro-ride.com/register0809.cfm - all of this years long term programs sold out and we are again limiting the numbers for next year to guarantee the best training available world wide.

This Seasons Programs

We now have a few places remaining for 1,2 and 4 weeks starting from March 22nd and 29th if you are keen to come out and ride. (Our group training sessions will run all the way until the end of April.) The conditions are excellent and we have loads of snow to get us through to the summer. The World Ski and Snowboard Festival is on again April 11 - 20 so this is a great time to come out. Check out http://whistler.mtv.ca/ - there will be 50 free live concerts, big air snowboard competition, arts events, endless night life and the best spring riding in the world. You can register on-line at www.pro-ride.com/register.cfm This will be your last chance for the season to gain your instructor certification, fine turn your freeriding skills or get your park shred on with the Pro Ride coaches.

My Journal: It's time to party
By: Jesgirl

With the summer concert series quickly approaching, I'm trying to do the opposite this year and lay low....lol
It's hard to find a job when you really don't feel motivated to do the same thing everyday!

There is a pretty good line up this year for touring:

"The summer concert season already looks hot, with shows set by the Police, Justin Timberlake, Kenny Chesney, Dave Matthews, John Legend, Tim McGraw & Faith Hill, John Mayer, Fergie and the free Ozzfest."

The eyes of the concert business will be on White River July 12 when Ozzfest kicks off its history-making free tour. You won't be able to just walk in, however. You have to get tickets either by pre-ordering Ozzy Osbourne's new album, "Black Rain," at www.ozzy.com (it'll be in stores May 22) or by logging onto the site on June 12. Tickets for the 24-city tour will be available there while supplies last.

Also making the rounds this summer, are Tim and Faith.  Always one of my favorite tours because they spare no expense on staging, lighting and one of the best live sound rigs out there.

The Police are looking to out sell Madonna on their summer bash, but I think even at 250.00 a ticket, they will fall short to Madonna's multi million dollar sold out extravaganza!!   Which btw, still topples the list of badass theatrical concerts.

Of coarse my girl Gwen is out with the Sweet Escape tour.  Always a good show, always a good time.  This time around she is pulling out all the stops, more dancers, more props, and without a doubt, more costumes!!

Kelly Clarkson, Clay Aiken, and even the currant American Idols still pull in the crowds all over the country.
Keith Urban and Martina McBride are pulling in some numbers for the country genre.
And if anybody wants to come jump up and down with me at the Fall Out Boy show, just give a holla!!

This month has kicked off with some fantastic spring conditions. We started the first week of the month with some light powder followed by bright blue sunny days. Everyone is smiling as it is nice to see the sun back and some warmer days. The next few days will be nice and then 30 - 40 cms are forecasted for Friday and Saturday to build up our 3 meter base.

Local Camp News
At camp things are starting to slow down a little with only two more weeks of programs for the winter calendar. That doesn't mean that we are slowing down as we are busy preparing for summer with our new Argentina Trip (Which is happening in August) as well as summer camp training in June and July. If you are keen to come out to Whistler over the next couple of weeks we have 3 places left for freestyle training. This is a great time to come out and get your jumps dialed and ride a few rails as the sun is out and the snow is soft. You can register on-line at http://www.pro-ride.com/register.cfm

Huck Magazine
Keep an eye out for Huck Magazine on the shelves at your local news agent. Andy from http://www.huckmagazine.com was just out at camp last week to check us out and write a story about our programs. They are a new lifestyle magazine out of London with a passion for life, beauty and the art of riding.

What's on in Whistler
Starting on Saturday is the World Ski and Snowboard Festival here in Whistler. Definitely a great week to come out to ride and party.. There are some huge events to watch like the two snowboard big air competitions, the half pipe competition and there will be more than 30 live concerts this week all for free! Check it out at http://www.whistler2007.com

Argentina Trip

♥ RULES OF BEING HARDCORE ♥

RULES OF HARDCORE

RULES OF HARDCORE--------------
1) Be tough at all times.
2) Never cheer after a show... only clap.
3) Be open minded in a "punch people" kind of way.
4) Only the good hardcore bands have names that are sentences with bad grammar. Ex: Boy Hits Car, Boy Sets Fire, Skycamefalling, Boy Sets Car-fire.
5) Ankles are tough so bring your socks down into your shoes so we can see them.
6) Tattoos are tough especially when they are on your calves. See rule 5 on how to see said tattoo more clearly.
7) Wear your hoodie in the mosh pit because sweating like a wild pig makes you look tough.
8) Don't admit you listen to heavy metal.
9) Exception to rule 8: only admit you listen to heavy metal if you think it is ironic and you wear 80's cheese metal shirts.
10) Be a non-conformist, just like all your friends.
11) Practice hardcore dancing in front of your mirror and then try them out the next time Atreyu comes to town.
12) A hardcore band is only original if you call it something-core. Ex: screamcore, emocore, screamocore, mathcore, or medio-core.
13) Remember, it's fun to punch and kick kung fu style.
14) Keep it in the do-jo.
15) Real hardcore fans are called kids.
16) Complain how hardcore bands are playing with metal bands at all costs!
17) Have your own zine, website, production company or be in a band. Claim you are friends with the singer from Shai Halud.
18) Tell people you work in the music industry.
19) More ankles people!
20) Embrace everybody in the scene except for those people who are not you.
21) Refer to bands as old school or new school and then act tough again.
22) Pretend that you get Dillinger Escape Plan.
23) Shop at second hand stores and then go buy expensive shoes.
24) Beat people up and then go to bible study class.
25) Smoking, drinking, and having sex before marriage is too trendy. Real hardcore tough guys abstain.
26) Whatever you do, don't let the singer on stage ever sing in the mic. Make sure you grab it from him and sing in it yourself. After all, you do a better job singing than him. It's a wonder they didn't put you on the album.
27) Start your own hardcore band.
28) Have your logo resemble some random 80's product for nostalgia.
29) Talk about the scene any chance you get. Say as many obscure hardcore bands from NJ as possible.
30) If you are shy, start an emo band so you don't have to look at the audience.
31) People who know more bands than you are better than you.
32) Add the letter X before and after important words. Ex: XhardcorekidX, Xmoshf*ckX
33) Never say, "did you hear the new Strung Out?" unless you are attempting to be funny in which case stop it because hardcore kids are tough not funny.
34) It's merch not merchandise.
35) Hardcore girls must wear head bands at all times.
36) Stretch your ears out to look more intimidating.
37) The bigger you stretch your ears out, the more hardcore you are.
38) Your ears should be stretched out enough to accommodate a block of wood, a hubcap, or a penis.
39) People in the front row are best used as a ladder/staircase to reach your goal... steal the mic away from the singer.
40) When people ask you if you like a band always say, "I only like the old stuff" or "I haven't really gotten into the new stuff."
41) Buy all of that band's merch.
42) Wear your new merch at the next hardcore show.
43) Repeat 41 and 42
44) If you have to wear glasses, make sure they are thick, black framed ones.
45) Don't tell anybody, but make sure you try on your new vintage clothes and stud belt before heading out to see Poison the Well.
46) Never admit you don't like Hatebreed and go see them live 12 times a year.
47) Complain that they are playing with Slayer, but don't admit you actually like Slayer.
48) Complain at all costs.
49) Tag team hardcore dancing is cool.
50) Real hardcore kids are really struggling photographers.
51) You don't go to hardcore concerts, you go to hardcore shows. BIG difference.
52) Name your hardcore dance moves things like "The Mother f*ck" or "Kick That Guy's Ass Move" or better yet... stay home and cry.
53) Protect your body from swinging limbs by sacrificing your two arms.
54) Scream about love.
55) All age venues are important so you are not tempted to drink.
56) Claim you know a guy who knows a guy whose best friend was standing next to the guy who got his ass kicked during Converge. Bash the hardcore scene and then go see The Get Up Kids.
57) Anytime somebody mentions a band always say you know somebody in the band.
58) Wear your pins with honor! Shai Halud, American Nightmare, Minor Threat are the purple heart of valour.
59) Velcro shoes are cool.
60) Don't admit that you have a crush on the singer from Walls of Jericho. If somebody asks, say you respect her as a musician only.
61) Your band name should contain one of the following words: blood, murder, kill, victim and/or butterfly.
62) Print your band name as if it was on a bad printing press. Actual graphics are for posers.
63) Sleep on a portrait painted prettier then everyone.
64) 100 bands from around the world are to play in your city. All of them are the world's best hardcore bands. Every label represented, every hardcore subgenre present. The venue is the best all-ages venue in the world. Tickets are $1.00. It is your job to go around saying the festival should be free.
65) Record producers must make sure to pump the mid because mid is tough.
66) Re-issue your demos after every album.
67) When the band starts playing, everybody join hands and make a big circle so we can watch the big kids play.
68) Crying on stage makes you a professional.
69) Complain some more.
70) Album covers must be made at home on Photoshop by your good friend.
71) If you are from New York, NEVER smile in a promo pic. In fact, always try to cross your arms and look into the camera as if you are going to beat up who ever is looking.
72) If you are from New Jersey, NEVER smile in a promo pic either. In fact, try to look like you just lost your girl friend to the hardcore band from New York.
73) Never admit that emo is country music lyrics mixed with pop rock riffs and marketed by 17 year olds trying to make their friend be the next Dashboard Confessional.
74) American Idol is your worst enemy (but you voted for Ruben).
75) You can get away with glitter on your face as long as your stretched ear plugs are clear.
76) f*ck beer; got breast milk?
77) Bandanas are cool.
78) Bandanas with big X on them are cooler.
79) Bandanas with big X on them were cool last week, you poser.
80) Your best friend is a guy named XattackX from Jersey who you chat with on MSN everyday. He is coming to see you one day. Really.
81) Chunky breakdowns in your songs are original and you should continue to do them despite every other band doing them which is clearly a rip off of your band.
82) Judge other bands and always compare them to the socio-cultural effects of the band Integrity.
83) Look up socio-cultural in the dictionary and then get offended.
84) Green Day is the real reason you are still alive.
85) Describe your group of friends as "The Scene."
86) Obey the laws of the hardcore scene or forever be banished from the circle.
87) When somebody asks you what is hardcore respond with, "I am hardcore" then punch somebody in the face for looking at you wrong.
88) Keep punching.
89) Kick a little, too.
90) Punch.
91) Add a threat about their mother for good measure.
92) Pretend you won the fight then pickup your dismembered left arm.
93) You are wearing the same thing as the 40-year old gas pump attendant, but for some strange mystical reason you are cooler than he is.
94) Tell everybody that Trustkill Records is too trendy.
95) Did you stop acting tough? I saw you hug that teddy bear.
96) Pierce your tits and tattoo your body.
97) Straight bangs mean straightedge
98) Being vegan means you can't swallow sperm.
99) When in doubt, mock everything.
100) Take everything personally. (duh)
101) Assume this list is about you!

My Blog: SWISS TOUR
By: inwo

Well, this is something i should have done long ago. I mean, write about my summer holidays to keep my friends inform, but im a lil lazy and one thing always leads to another one, so in the end, here i am, it´s almost two months since i came back from switzerland and im wrtiting about it now.

I decided to go to switzerland in middle may. I had plans to go to south spain but my friend let me down (something that is becoming more and more usual these days), so i found myself with money and two weeks free. I realised i had loads of friends in switzerland who i wanted to see or meet, but they all lived in different countries, so the idea came to my mind on its own. The idea was to take a train from hendaye to geneva and travel through switzerland by train, visiting a few friends and staying at their places... I was lil afraid cos my german is not so good and i had to take so many dif trains... so there i went.

On 31st June, as soon as i got my driving license i set out to hendaye, which took me about 1h45´. I must say i was terrified driving along the highway with all those trucks coming behind me!!! In the end everything went allright. I arrived at 7.15pm there and the train was leaving at 8.30pm so i had plenty of time. My mother and i begun to look for the platform at the screens but we found no train going to geneva. I begun to panic. I took my ticket and look for the departure time. Aaaaaaaaaaargh!! The train didn´t leave at 20.30 but at 18.30!!!! My mind became white and i couldn´t help myself shivering. I was thinking about all the friends i had to phone to tell them i had to call off the trip.

Fortunately my mum was next to me and she took the control of the situation. We head for one of the desk to try to change the ticket. I never thought you could do so!!! It took a long long time (i remember thinking it was endless), but finally the lady found a train going from hendaye to paris and then to geneva. There were 3 problems: i didn´t lose the money of the previous ticket but as i had to travel on 1st class (the only seats available) so i had to pay a lil more; in Paris i had to change the station (damn!! i don´t speak French, just to talk about snowboard with my french friends) and Paris was too big); and the train arrived much later to geneva than the one i should have taken, so i had to change all the timetable... Despite all this, i felt quite lucky cos i could go to switzerland for my tour!!!

From then on, i didn´t have any problems with the timetables as i looked at the tickets almost every minute to make sure it was all right. I got slightly lost at zurich cos the rail station is huge, but i finally got on the right one. I arrived at Zug properly and there was my tiny friend Nicole waiting to pick me up.

I spent 4/5 days. We did loads of things, i met her friends (Chec, Reni, Miri) and family (mum and brothers) and we went partying a lot (once to Luzern, which turned out to be quite a mess, and once to the Cool Monday at Zurich). She saw me the city around and we spent some great evenings at the lake. Thanks a lot Nicole!!!

After that, I headed for Zurich. I was supposed to meeet my friend Miqui there, but on the last moment he told me he had to travel to spain because of his work... i had already booked the hostel and i wasn´t supposed to arrived in geneva till the next afternoon, so there i went, alone to Zurich.

It didn´t took me very long to find the youth hostel as i had around 5 dif maps and it was not too far. No sooner had i checked in than i had a suuuper refreshing shower. I was staying in a room with other 5 girls, but when i arrived i only found one reading a book. She had been there for a few days, so she offered to show me the downtown.

We went for a walk around the lake and afterwards we went for a drink with her brother-in-law (Dan) and a friend of him.

I left quite soon as I had to meet Nicole again at the Rail station, cos we had VIP tickets, which her mother had got, to watch the football championship. We had a delicious meal there and a couple of beers. After that, we said goodbye to each other and I head back for the hostel.

It was pouring rain in my way back and my little umbrella didn´t help me too much, so when I arrived at the hostel I had to dry my clothes and prepare myself again. At the room was my friend Renée, his brother and another two friends. They´re going to an architecture party, so I joined them.

The party turned out to be absolutely crazy, one of the maddest I´ve been to this summer. Let´s just say there´re loads of hot studs and I picked up an odd number bigger than 1…. Ejemmm…. I was out of control and so they´re Dan and his two friends (Dario and Marcelo).

We spent next morning chilling out on a huge park, trying to get over a veeeery nasty hangover. We just lay down under the soft sun and let time go by till i had to take the train to Geneve.

At Geneve my Spanish friend Iñiguito was waiting for me, I was staying with him at his hall of residence. I spent the next three days with him and as he had to do some uni stuff I hang around the town and the harbour and went shopping. On the last night, we went to a party organised by one of the residents at the hall. There´re a few concerts but not much party atmosphere L.

On 9th I took the train back home, ON time, so since then on I had no problems at all. I had bought the cosmopolitan so as not to get bored during the trip, but I eventually fell asleep. And there I was next morning, back in Spain, though I had to drive 1h45´ again to get home and lie on my so-missed bed.

YIPPIE!!!  I managed to land a gig in Pennsylvania for Spring 07!!

It's a theatre job, and it's going to be full time and most likely teh suck....hahaha....but I cannot tell you how happy I am to not have to worry about that anymore.

It ain't exactly Broadway, but it is a nice little place with some decent shows.
I can't say that I'm going to miss doing concerts and running aimlessly around the country right now.  But I know once I'm not doing it next summer, I will miss it.

Summer is always a wicked time in BC. Chillin' at the lake, swimming, hiking, camping, road trippin', concerts, surfing... ahhh, there's just SO much to do out here.

It's hard to beleive we're almost into August...Which is my birthday month. It's on August the 8th, and I accept all forms of personal cheques, cash, VISA/MC/AMEX as well.

I was in Kelowna last weekend for some hiking and beach action. What a cool town ! The steez of lots of the women is very similar to Whistler, but all the guys seem to be dirtbags ! What's up with that, ladies? I camped at Okanagan Prov Park and Bear Creek Prov Park, two parks I would definitely recommend.

This weekend it'll be TOFINO. It's been almost two months since I've surfed and I'm craving some wave action. Looks like a building SW Swell as well for the weekend, but all in all it'll be pretty fickle.

After that, I'm back to work 6 days weeks for three weeks in a row. Happy birthday to me!
