My Blog: WSSC- Who We Are
By: WSSC

Who we are:

With our world class private terrain park, professional coaches, hotel accommodation, meals, and activities, Whistler Summer Snowboard Camp is the place to be this summer!

what's included:

• Interactive coaching environment. Our coaches are not only professionals, but genuinely love kids and love coaching. Our coaching groups provide a better opportunity for campers to progress, as your coach will get to know you during the week and anticipate your needs and goals.

• Value. Everything is included in the camp price. ALL scheduled activities (extra charge for some optional activities) , ALL meals including dinner, a free camp T-Shirt and a camp video.

• Private pipe, race lanes, and park. Our on-hill facility is world class with private pipe, race lane, groomed area, terrain park, and lots of other terrain. Because we limit the amount of campers that we can accept each session, our park is never crowded. This means less time standing around waiting your turn, which is the case at the busier camps, and more time for you to focus on your goals!

• Supervision. We don't hold back the older campers or forget about the younger ones. All campers under 19 are supervised 24 hrs by our live-in hotel staff.

• Luxury-suites, not crowded dorms or small hotel rooms. The suites are equipped with a full-kitchen, living area, 2 bathrooms, 2 bedrooms and a big balcony to enjoy the beautiful mountain views! There is also a heated pool, huge jacuzzi, basketball court and volleyball net. The resort is located just minutes from the base of the hill, too, so there is no traveling to get to the lifts - they're just a short walk from breakfast!

• All meals are included in the price of the camp. Some other camps don't provide you with dinner. This can add-up to $100's of additional dollars to the price of your camp.

• No hiking. Our lifts run all day.

• Walk to the lifts. Some of the other camps have a 30 minute bus ride just to get to the hill but at our camp you can walk there in 5 min after you eat breakfast at a nice restaurant.

Local Whistler Coaching Company Ramps Up Program Offerings in Response to U.S. H2B Visa Shortage

As the international community of snowboard instructors and coaches scrambles to find work outside of the U.S. for the 2008/9 winter season, Whistler B.C.'s Pro Ride has chosen to step up training program offerings to entice snowboard pros to stay in the industry and work in Canada.  After running successful coaching and instructional programs for the past 10 years, Pro Ride has announced its plan to increase instructional training programs for snowboard coaches and instructors who would otherwise have worked at U.S. resorts prior to the H2B visa shortage, which was announced in January of 2008.

“The current difficulties the US ski industry is experiencing with the lack of H2B visas for temporary workers reinforces the opportunities for international workers to come and train and work in Canada,” said Anthony Crute, the founder and head coach of Pro Ride.  “While the H2B visa situation will hopefully be rectified within the next year, instructors and coaches can get a start in Canada and prepare themselves for US employment."  Crute's emphasis on bringing on professional athletes and internationally certified coaches to train Pro Ride participants has produced instructors who now are employed at winter resorts around the world.

Pro Ride and its impressive roster of coaches begin offering programs as early as December of 2008.

Glacier Snowboard Camp News: Glacier Snowboard Camp Summer 2008
By: glaciercamp

Glacier Snowboard Camp is setting up to have its best year ever.

There is so much snow still left in Whistler it’s crazy. The temperatures have been so low and it just hasn’t let the snow melt. There is still over 230 cm or 91 inches of snow at mid mountain and way more on the glacier.

So that means more snow to make jumps this summer.

We are taking fewer campers than ever and expanding our terrain to include a park on the T-bar lap. So you can take multiple jumps and/or rails in a row without ever having to hike (unless you want to).  We are so excited about having such a bigger park than we have had in the past.

We take fewer campers than anyone and that directly translates to more coaching and personal attention. You are not just a number with us. You are a friend who has entrusted us to coach you to snowboard better and to show you a great time. We take that responsibility very serious.

If you want to snowboard better or just want to have the best time ever then Glacier Snowboard Camp is where you want to be.

Seriously.

Check out the website for all the information or give us a call at 604-935-7776.

The BC Snowboard Association (BCSA) is pleased to announce that Cypress
Mountain, off icial snowboard venue f or the 2010 Olympic W inter Games has
shown continued support of the BCSA and the development of amateur athletes
within BC. The BC Development Team, which currently trains exclusively at Big
W hite Ski Resort, has expanded its scope to the Lower Mainland with regular
training planned at Cypress Mountain for the 2008-09 winter season.

The Provincial Development Snowboard Team is designed as a stepping stone
for young athletes to move up the ranks of competitive snowboarding within BC
and secure spots on the BC Provincial Snowboard-Cross and Halfpipe Teams.
The BC Provincial Teams in turn act as a f eeder-program for the Canadian
National Snowboard Team. The Development program, now entering its third
year in operation has received a huge amount of support f rom Big W hite Ski Area
where the teams have been based. W ith the expansion of the 2008-09 program
to include not only Big W hite Ski Resort but now Cypress Mountain, there will be
additional opportunities f or young athletes to become involved with the
competitive stream of snowboarding within BC.

Joff rey Koeman, Cypress Mountain’s Director of Sales & Marketing says, "W e
are very e xcited to have the BCSA Development Team expand to Cypress
Mountain.  W hen the BCSA Team approached us on this idea we all felt that this
was a perfect f it for Cypress Mountain's ongoing commitment to developing snow
sport athletes in Vancouver and at Cypress Mountain the Off icial Freestyle Skiing
and Snowboard Venue for the 2010 Olympic W inter Games."

Unlike the Provincial Teams, the Development program is not specialized in any
one snowboard discipline. Rather, the athletes are encouraged to compete in
Slopestyle, Halfpipe and Snowboard-Cross events. Athletes within the program
must be at least 13 years old and generally have already gained some
competitive experience. In order to gain a spot within the Development Team,
athletes participate in one of two Selection Camps, the next being scheduled in
early December at both Big W hite Ski Resort and at Cypress Mountain.

Matt Galina, Development Team Head Coach comments that, “I think that it’s a
great opportunity that our program is expanding, as this will give even more
young riders the opportunity to get the coaching that will help them develop as
competitive snowboarders.

Currently there are eleven athletes on the BC Provincial De velopment Team. The
athletes compete in local competitions as well as BCSA Provincial Series Events.
The team trains in two areas in the province including Big W hite and Cypress Mountain. Additional inf ormation regarding the Development Program and the
Provincial Teams can be found at www.bcsnowboard.com

The BC Snowboard Association (BCSA) is a non-prof it sport organization, which
is the governing body of snowboarding with in the Province.  The BCSA is an
organization that brings youth into a safe and supported environment while
competing in a sport they love.  Up and coming National Team riders and future
pro athletes are bred through the BCSA and its programs.

Mt. Hood , OR (Immediate Release)  High Cascade Snowboard Camp has added a second snowboard park this summer up on Timberline.  Campers will now get to ride the original HCSC park with updated features as well as The New Park™ located on the same run used for Burton Snowboard’s Abominable Snow Jam slope-style course.

This lift serviced lap park, chock full of jumps, boxes and rails fresh from the fun-factory will effectively double the HCSC snowboard park size for the upcoming summer.

Doubled!  That’s amazing…

Imagine if everything about camp doubled in size… the average camper would be 11 feet tall and weigh 300 lbs., riding 300 cm snowboards and eating Cobra Dogs the size of eggplants.  The Bustache’s mustache would be 20 feet wide, the Unicorn Bus’ horn would be 16 feet long and the world’s only 2-tiered dodgeball court would become the world’s only 4-tiered dodgeball court…  That’d be crazy.  Crazy awesome.

HCSC is the best summer snowboard camp in the world, ever.  Located on Mt. Hood , Oregon since 1989, High Cascade offers world-class facilities and professional coaching in a fun and supportive environment… Check out www.highcascade.com to see awesomeness in its purest form.

The program is based out of Big White Ski Resort, with the majority of training and competitions happening there.  However, there are the opportunities to travel throughout BC to attend competitions, such as the Canadian National Championships being hosted by Cypress Mountain (Olympic Snowboard Venue) in Vancouver at the beginning of April.

In order to maximize the effectiveness of the coaches’ time with athletes, the Development Team size is limited to ten (10) participants.  We are working closely with Big White Ski Area to ensure that if the Development Team is not right for a young athlete, then the Big White Free-Ride Team is.

If this doesn’t sound like your cup of tea - contact us and decide your own involvement - we are open to individual modifications regarding commitment.

this is what you need to know

A Selection Camp is being held at Big White Ski Resort on Sunday, November  25th.

There is no cost to participate in the Selection Camp – however you need to pre-register.

Meet at the Village Center Mall (VCM) entrance (under the clock tower in the center of Big White Village) at 9:00 am with a helmet, ready to ride.

A week ago today, Best Friend Cathy came back to London! since then, we've turned the house into residence... late night grocery shopping, ice cream for dinner, and tons of procrastination! it's been great!   I missed her, and am so happy that I now have someone who entertains my crazy ideas!!!!

I'm also starting to get a pretty decent tan from all the yard work and track coaching... woohoo, bring on summer :)

This month has kicked off with some fantastic spring conditions. We started the first week of the month with some light powder followed by bright blue sunny days. Everyone is smiling as it is nice to see the sun back and some warmer days. The next few days will be nice and then 30 - 40 cms are forecasted for Friday and Saturday to build up our 3 meter base.

Local Camp News
At camp things are starting to slow down a little with only two more weeks of programs for the winter calendar. That doesn't mean that we are slowing down as we are busy preparing for summer with our new Argentina Trip (Which is happening in August) as well as summer camp training in June and July. If you are keen to come out to Whistler over the next couple of weeks we have 3 places left for freestyle training. This is a great time to come out and get your jumps dialed and ride a few rails as the sun is out and the snow is soft. You can register on-line at http://www.pro-ride.com/register.cfm

Huck Magazine
Keep an eye out for Huck Magazine on the shelves at your local news agent. Andy from http://www.huckmagazine.com was just out at camp last week to check us out and write a story about our programs. They are a new lifestyle magazine out of London with a passion for life, beauty and the art of riding.

What's on in Whistler
Starting on Saturday is the World Ski and Snowboard Festival here in Whistler. Definitely a great week to come out to ride and party.. There are some huge events to watch like the two snowboard big air competitions, the half pipe competition and there will be more than 30 live concerts this week all for free! Check it out at http://www.whistler2007.com

Camp of Champions, home to the largest private snowboard park in the world, is pleased to announce the creation of “PRO CAMP”. Finally, a camp for budding pro riders! A camp for riders who don’t need coaching but who still need access to the sickest terrain available in summer.

Designing and creating Pro Camp, we wanted to make a camp as bare bones as possible so that “budgetarily constrained” campers can come to Whistler and ride the only winter quality park available in the summer. The COC Park is at least twice the size of any summer park in Mt. Hood or Whistler and the town of Whistler is a snowboarder’s paradise with lakes, a skate park, restaurants and a movie theater.

The only way to make Pro Camp possible was to strip out almost everything except access to the epic park. At Pro Camp, campers have to be responsible for themselves. We supply the bare bones: lift tickets, a tasty lunch, and our world-famous park. The camper is responsible for arranging everything else. If you are 18 or over and want to go pro, start by hitting campofchampions.com and see how you can go to camp for $700 Cdn (approx $575.00 US) for an eight day session - 1/3 of the price of a regular snowboard camp. Log on now, go pro sooner!

Pro Camp is eligible for the $500 Child Fitness Tax Credit. Come to camp, submit your camp receipt with your taxes and get a $500 tax credit from the Canadian Government for getting off the couch. You must be Canadian to qualify for the tax credit.

For the best discount accommodation we recommend Whistler Blackcomb Staff Housing. Live in Whistler this summer for less than $10 a night.

The Rugged Riders Tricks R4 Chicks snowboard camp presented by Roxy was four days of explosive energy, determination and pure ruggedness. TR4C set a precedent in eastern Canada as the first, the one and the only, all girls snowboard camp. Mont-Blanc Ski Resort hosted the camp in the private TR4C snowboard park designed with Rugged Riders panel of women shredders and carefully constructed with the Mont-Blanc park rangers and Rugged Staff.

The journey began with pick-ups…rallying girls together at their closest Axis boardshops and then loading them into the Rugged Mobile. TR4C gathered girls from as far as Barrie, Ontario and Lac St-Jean, Quebec. From there we headed to the park to see what would be called home for the next four days. With two super smooth booters and a diversity of jibs there was something for everyone. The TR4C private park was the perfect design for learning, and learn we did…

Four days of thirty girls owning the private TR4C park was more than enough to pump up the girls to learn new tricks and make new friends. The girls exceeded everyone’s expectations and were progressing at a rate so fast that we could hardly keep up with them! Even the pros were surprised. Amber Stackhouse and Alexis Waite the TR4C guest pro riders camp had never seen a group of girls so motivated and rugged when it came to riding and learning in a camp atmosphere.

The beginner freestylers were quickly doing big airs, 180 spins and frontside boardslides while the more experienced riders were practicing their cab 3’s and 540’s or learning steezy tricks on the street rail.

After a day on the hill we loaded the Rugged Mobile and headed to camp for some good home-cooked meals, and extra activities. Nighttime was the perfect chance to learn how to crochet, skateboard, give massages, rock climb or have water fights while doing the dishes! The evenings were also the perfect time for the Rugged Crew to take a trip to the spa and chill out in the hot tub, steam baths and sauna.

All the girls left with goodies bags from Roxy and Axis Boardshop. They also benefited from great deals on SBC subscriptions, and prizes from DC and APO snowboards.

The Tricks R4 Chicks Camp had it all; experienced and certified coaches, guest pro-riders, a private park, awesome food and tons of girls that were truly rugged and ready to shred. We couldn’t have asked for a better group of girls, a nicer park or a more fabulous four days together.

For girls ready to shred…we will see you at the Rugged Riders Jump’N Grind event on March 10th. For girls who are interested in some rugged snowboard coaching…they can contact info@ruggedriders.com.
