just realized i haven't posted anything new in forever... well.. maybe not that long.  but close.  i don't have my forever-th birthday for a few months still.

anywho, not sure if you guys noticed, but have you heard?... times are tough.  people can't afford their houses, cars are being repossesed, people are being laid off and banks... yes, banks, needed to borrow money from the government.  i thought they were the ones who lent money to people?  crazy times i tell you.

i thought i'd share some money saving tips to help you all out in case you are finding times tough.

1. don't buy toilet paper... use yesterdays newspaper.  not only will it work at removing the feces, but you can get some gratification wiping shi*t all over that jon arbuckle in the garfield comic.... you aren't funny!

2. unplug your clocks during the night... i mean come on.. who needs to know what time it is while they are sleeping right?

3. encourage not cleaning up spilled food.  if you have cats, the mice the food brings in will provide free pet food.

4.  bring your rolled canadian pennies to the states to cash in.  that way, you'll get an extra 10 cents per roll with the exchange!

5. for christmas, buy people $50 gift cards for places that they rarely go to... that way, when they never get around to using it,  no one will even notice that you already spent the 50 bucks and just gave an empty card.

6. save on water by not showering.  not only will it save on the water bill, but you'll save even more when people refuse to accept your dinner offers.

7. learn to love e-bay, craigslist and kijiji... not just buying things cheaper, but you can sell not only old clutter at your house, but your re-found 'virginity'.

8. get all your drinking done in one night.  though it may not sound like a money saver, the next morning, when you wake up and say, 'never again', you have just given yourself at least a week before your next bender without having to hop on the wagon.  and on that bender, drink fast and on an empty stomach.

9. cancel that gym membership... come on now... its obvious you aren't using it fatty.  you aren't fooling anyone.

10. stop purchasing any type of prophylactic be it the pill or condoms, might as well be money in your wallet instead.  because after all... if you follow the other tips on here, no way does anyone want to sleep with you.

hope these tips help and if you are able to save a couple bucks, feel free to buy me a beer next time you see me.

I humbly bow to the title. Welcome the Strange Days.

It's in this moment, Hold on
When everything has come apart
It's in this moment
Right now
When it can come together

Raise your sights
What's there to lose?

Fall in the light

In all this trouble, Hold on
To the innocence with which you were born
There's so much struggle
Be strong
Find the faith you need to carry on

It's a long night
You're not alone

Fall in the light

Sweet air
It falls into place
Sun through the haze
Doesn't it feel a
Little like grace

It's in this moment, Hold on
When everything has come apart
It's in this moment
Right now
When everything - come together

Raise your soul
What's there to lose

Fall in the light

(Hold on)
(I know you'll catch me)

What is the hardest thing about Snowboarding the first day of the year?  Putting down the board and taking pictures. The mood was epic on the afternoon of the 11th, boards and shovels in hand we embarked on a journey that would bring friends of all types and styles together.  While most kids were playing video games and sleeping in we were playing in the snow that friday nights storm left for us.  Matty McInnis, Chris Bartowski and I headed up there around 11 and met up with the heavy hitting crew including Brandon Cocard, Nick Visconti, Joshua Parker, Niki, Brandon Dury, Who, Brandon Hays, Andrew Brewer and RV. Check out these photos from our long trip to our patch somewhere above the greater Reno/Carson City area.

There's a war going on for my mind. The various factions want it for it holds the key to something they seek: my spending power and potentially yours. I'm comforted by the knowledge, however, that if I'm thinking, I'm winning; and right now I'm thinking, are you?

Every day we are bombarded with advice on how we should live. We call this advertising, it's the blueprint for modern life. We need better music, faster cars, greener grass, and bigger penises. Fortunately there are many competing blueprints to choose from. It is still a matter, however, of choosing one of the pre-defined options; free thinking people need not apply.

You guys look better already... Snowboarding is one way to stay out of the war's line of fire. It's an endeavour that, while you are doing it, all that matters is you, the mountain, nature and your friends. The snowboarding industry itself, however, is not so pure. This was evident during this year's Telus World Ski and Snowboard Festival (and festivals past I'm sure). The most visible things in Whistler village from April 11th to the 20th were: Schick (to look good), GM (to get to the place where you need to look good), Kokanee (to make those people look good to you) and of course Telus (to tell people how good you looked). The most important element of the festival seemed to have been forgotten, or at least was not immediately evident: the snowboarding. If you looked hard enough, however, you would quickly see that it was there lurking beneath the surface.

One of the reasons that I like snowboarding is because I like snowboarders, and by that I mean REAL snowboarders. Not those with fake goggle tans and orders of magnitude more time riding mahoganee ridge than actual play time in the snow. In many ways, snowboarders are much more genuine than most people. They have experienced the harshness of winter head on and walked away with a smile. They might not face this with incredible skill or style, but it does not matter how good they are at snowboarding only how much joy the get from it. Though it may be hard to distiguish a goggle tan obtained in a tanning salon from one obtained while hiking up a steep aspect to earn some turns, if you look into a snowboarders eyes, you should have no problem identifying the true ones from the rest. Rest assured, contrary to the message in their add campaigns, Expedia has no idea how those snowboarders feel about winter. They'd probably just as soon take a vacation to somewhere with snow in the middle of summer than go somewhere tropical in the middle of winter, counter to what is customary.

Although true snowboarders represent something quite contrary to the industry itself, they would be nowhere without it. For this reason, it's important to remember that you vote with your dollars. Make sure when you buy your gear, that you aren't supporting something that you don't believe in. Certainly not because that product has a flashier ad than another. You probably wouldn't let me tell you who to vote for in a democratic election, so don't let me, or anyone else, tell you what to ride or what to wear. By avoiding monoculture, we ensure that snowboarding remains a feeling rather than a look or an attitude. Admittedly, people look up to me for advice on snowboarding, this follows from being a teacher. I always try, however, to make sure to only provide factual information. You should always synthesize any advice with your own needs and desires, otherwise eventually, every snowboarder will be a clone of every other snowboarder. Then the sport will become yet another victim of the corrosiveness of conformity.

Indeed there is a war going on for my mind and it has been for some time now, but the warring factions are engaging in an excercise in futility. The real prize, the item of the most value, is my heart and they'll never be able to take that away from me, I've already given it away.

cherie_amanda.jpg Our friend Cherie Carswell (who happens to be a designer over at Westbeach) emailed us last week saying that she was going to this "crazy tranny show" that we had to check out. And since we're not the type to back down from anything weird and unusual we said shi*t YES! We had our interns do a little research and found out that it was non other the world renown transvestite Amada Lepore wich according to Soap box prophet (wich we religiously acknowledge) is "the tranny to top all trannies" (ok?) and she would be playing at some bar called the Biltmore. Playing...we don't know what but it sounded freaky and crazy and dammit we wanted in. Instantly we dropped the mounds of paper work, html-codeing and all sorts of other technical internet workings that we do here at gnarcore.com and called gnarcoraspondent and cultural documenter DAVID ROULEAU who happen to already be in Vancouver. View the Gallery to see how his night went.

What is up? I am going to give you the low down on the last trip. D, J-Dog, and I left the Springs on Friday 6:30am. Brutal cause it was early and I was captain of the ship. Hwy 24 west to Woodland park over Wilkerson Pass across Tatonka flats into Hartsel. A few miles outside Hartsel is the turn for 9 North, I must admit I get off seeing the cars turning to go to Breck. From there it was smooth sailing into Johnson Village and then south into Poncha Springs. Once we started up the pass to Monarch is was snowing. Sure you can see the cloud cover coming in but you never really know. It was on. 6 new and snowing but not cold. FYI the posse road on wax jobs by yours truly. I am not bullstickin we were first on the Breezeway lift. Took the run down to Panorama (Mid-Mountain). It is why we go. It was knee deep in the trees and snowing hard. You are here cause you know the feeling of being on top of the snow. It is a powerful range of emotions to feel. Not to get all sappy but damn. So we kill it from a vertical feet standpoint on Friday. Soup at the Sidewinder. Finish up Après style. Head into town to what we thought was the trusty Budget Lodge on the East side of Salida on 50. New Managment=Last night at the Budget. Sorry raising the price and not improving the facilities won’t work for me. Spent the evening with T-1 and Ang Yucking it up. It snowed all evening. The Patio Pancake was perfect fuel for the day, number four over easy wheat toast. Hit the Coffee house cause and what do I hear...FOOT OF FRESH. That was the chant all the way up. It was as amazing as ever. For so early in the year is sure seemed like spring DEEP. We had a blast but the cold temp and deep snow started sidelining the team one by one. We split about 1 and it was like no one else was on the road till we hit Ute Pass back into the Springs.

We went skateboarding to Pemberton yesterday.
Pemberton is just 30min. north of Whistler by car and it’s a town richly
endowed with nature.
There are farms, ranches and golf courses so my impression of Pemberton is
like “an easygoing town.”

There were many local kids but after a while they all went home so it was
like our own private park.

From Taka...

I joined the CAMP OF CHAMPIONS of Canada from the end of June to the beginning of July.
This time I practiced a lot of kickers and rails rather than the usual half pipes that I ride...
I had fun times and was blessed with good weather.

After this I’m heading to Mt. Hood!
I haven’t practice half pipe for a while but I can hang tough at Mt.
Hood because I learned something at the COC camp...I hope?

Hello, it’s Keiji.
Tadashi and I hit the skateboard park a little bit.
I felt my body tense up because of the concrete ground, so I didn’t try any tricks but I could still have fun just riding my skateboard.

and anyone who looks here knows it!

Since my last one, I have bought another car (pug 106 GTi), been promoted at work (now store manager), moved house and been on holiday to France. Not snowboarding though - thats coming up in a few months.

I now manage a mobile phone shop and do ok with it. Its nice and quiet most of the time but it does have its busy moments! I regularly get odd looks from customers who think that, as manager, I should have the most up-to-date phone but instead I have a 5 year old Nokia thats stood up to some brutal crashes whilst snowboarding and kiteboarding. Why would I want to change it?

Went to the final round of the BTCC (Touring cars) yesterday - a good day! Took some mates from the Nissan SX owners club (www.sxoc.com - I'm Teggers on there too!) and we all had a great time - especially as we got VIP tickets from my work!!

Well, I might write another addition here soon. Although it could be another 6 months!! At which point I will have been snowboarding again!!!

my mind is so busy, so chaotic, all these random thoughts running through my mind! i really don't know what to type in here, i'll just put all the random thoughts down--

i still have to write a letter tonight...

I wish someone would leave me a fun note on my car...in the middle of the night..
(i .. i don't know...but it sounds fun..) or like tap on my window..

i miss the old you.but im over it...or will be

SLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP.

changes. growing up.

sometimes the best moments are just driving around town, windows down, glasses on, and singing alone to your favorite music and songs.

driving somewhere for no reason or drive no where for a reason.

looking at the scenery, watching the other thousands of cars driving by, hoping to catch a glimpse of someone you know.

always had this idea that it was ok if you and i weren't together right now.
because i felt deep inside that you and i were soul mates.
meant to be together;  because with all i have; i love you.

im not quite so sure these days..

i know that you are the one person that when i close my eyes i envision growing with..through age and as a person..

but my uncertainty is how you feel for me.

i might not ever know.

you don't quite understand.

My Journal: euro trip
By: O-Henry

London – We flew into Heathrow and the plan was to catch a train to Jamies grandmothers house in Oxford but her house was flooded.  So we got a tube to Camden & met up with Jamies cousin David who agreed to let us stay for a few days.  The first night in London we met up with some of Jamie’s friends.   We didn’t really want to do any of the touristy stuff in London, but we did go the National Gallery and Trafalger Sqaure. The exchange rate for pounds to Canadian dollars was pretty brutal so we didn’t spend much.  We caught up with a friend from school, Nicole who was in Kensington.  We walked past Hyde Park but we didn’t go check out the Princesss Diana memorial, so I didn’t get the chance to pee in it.  If London wasn’t so ridiculously expensive I would love to live there, going to the pub for a pint is a great way to spend an evening.

Amsterdam – I knew this would be the highlight of the trip, I’d heard a lot of stories about what we should do and where to go in Amsterdam.   To be fair there is a lot of cool stuff to do if sex drugs aren’t your thing …. we did go visit Anne Franks house, and the Rijksmuseum which has about 1000 Van Gogh and Rembrandt paintings.  But my favorite museum was the Heineken Experience which lovingly tells the story of Hollands favorite beer with interactive displays.  As you make your way through the “museum” there are 3 different pubs where you get to sample the beer.
The nightlife in Amsterdam is amazing, we went to Boom Chicago which is an improv comedy club.  I was surprised how everyone in Holland spoke English, and the Dutch have no accent.  It sounds a bit American and a bit English, but I would have a hard time spotting a Dutchman.
I wanted to check out a coffee house in Amsterdam, but I was not planning on trying any drugs.  We went into a coffee house on the first night & they had a menu of what you could buy – they had cookies and brownies and doughnuts, and hashie milkshakes.   I tried a brownie, it was supposed to be the equivalent of 2 joints.  I think I was more influenced from the jug of beer we had at boom Chicago.   On our second night in Amsterdam we decided to get a gram of marijuana.  I’m not an expert but it was good stuff.  Amsterdam has to be one of the most interesting places, the people dress like Vogue models.  The red light district was not as sleazy as I expected, it seemed pretty touristy actually.   I was surprised when Jamie suggested we go see a live sex show, I was happy to try anything & everything we could on our trip. It was just regular sex, a guy & a girl, 2 lesbians and then a jungle woman with triple-D boobs having sex with a guy in a gorilla suit.  It was something fun to do as a one-off, but I don’t think it would be something you would do every week, like instead of going to the movies you would catch a sex show.
On our last night in Amsterdam we met up with the rest of our Contiki group.  There were 50 people in our group, mostly Australians & New Zealanders and some South Africans, Canadians, Americans.  There were a couple of Brazilians and Tawainese too, so it was a good mix of people.

Munich – we were all pretty hung over when we left Amsterdam at 6am to drive to Munich, Germany.  Our tour guide was Rachel, a cool chick from New Zealand, she basically talked to us like a school teacher & told us we would have to stay with the group & leave when she told us or they’d leave without us.  We arrived in Munich at about 4PM, just in time to go see the Glockinspeil.  Rachel told us it was the highlight of Munich … basically it’s a huge cuckoo clock. It went for 10 minutes, and there were literally 1000s of people watching.  When the clock finally stopped chiming we went for a tour of Munchen.  In the middle of the city is a park where office workers go & sit and eat their lunch and take their clothes off … it was a nudist park!  We went to a beer hall in Munich for dinner, the very one where Hitler used to go to give some of his famous speeches.   German food is pretty good, the main course was literally just a pork leg … no vegetables, no side dish, just meat!  I had 2 steins with my dinner so I don’t remember miuch else happening in Munich, except back at the hotel half the group went to bed & half the group went to the bar for another drink.  Jamie and I met a local Munchen man who offered to buy us a drink, cos he enjoyed speaking English and just wanted to talk to us …. ahh ok we went to bed pretty quickly then.   We drove to Switzerland the next morning, but we did make a stop at the Dacchau concentration camp, they turned the original buildings into a museum. I have to respect Germany for not trying to cover up their darkest chapter in history.

Geneva / Lucerne / Zurich – the trip itinerary was very full, we spent a lot of time each day on the bus traveling to our next destination.  We arrived in Zurich at lunch time, it’s the one city in Europe that looked exactly how I expected & was looking forward to explore it.  Too bad Rachel gave us 30 minutes to see the city & have lunch …. just enough time to grab a McSwiss burger.  The Swiss Alps were beautiful and I definitely want to go back with my snowboard.  It was funny seeing the Australians and South Africans get excited about seeing snow for the first time.  In Lucerne we saw a yodeling demonstration and had a traditional Swiss dinner.  But the highlight of Lucerne was the hotel, which was basically overtaken by our group.  It’s where the group really bonded, and I leant heaps of new drinking games.

Cannes / Nice / Monaco – it was a long drive from Lucerne to Cannes, with a short stop in Zurich.  When Rachel gave the group the choice of having a quiet night at the camping grounds or going to Monaco we unanimously voted for Monaco.  Jamie & I were dressed up to hit the Grand Royale casino …. I wanted to order a vodka martini, Jamie wanted to bet 10∍ on black.  There was a 20∍ cover charge to enter the Grand Royale, so we hit the mini-casino next door.  Jamie was insistent that he was going to gamble in Monaco so he put 10∍ in the giant slot machine … and won 950∍! Back in Antibes we got a bottle of vodka to celebrate.  The funniest moment of the trip was in Monaco when Rachel pointed out Prinicess Stephanie’s palace to us, and Aussie Dave yelled out ‘jeez its bloody nice hey, I thought my house was nice but this is bloody beautiful!’.  We got to spend the next day in Cannes, you feel like a schmuck seeing all the sports cars and huge yachts and villas.  The only other interesting thing that happened in Cannes was a guy in our group nearly got arrested for taking photos of topless women on the beach.  There was a circus with lots of carnival rides next to the campgrounds where we were staying.  After a few beers a bunch of us went on the giant drop, it wasn’t until we got to the top when Derrick reminded everyone about the 13 year old girl who lost her feet on the same ride.  But we survived and went back to the huts for more beer and card games.

Barcelona  -  Spain was the last stop on our contiki trip.  I’ve always thought that Italy has the worlds most beautiful women, but Spain is a serious challenger to the title.  The architecture in Spain was amazing.   It was the groups last night & we went to a flamenco demonstration & to a nightclub which was I was looking forward to doing for the whole trip.  I tried Sangria in Barcelona, which was pretty smooth so I drank more and more.  Maybe it was the alcohol but everybody was pretty emotional about it being our last night, a bunch of us are planning on reuniting for another contiki trip next year.

Paris – Jamie & I flew to Paris the next morning .  Air travel in Europe is realy cheap, our tickets were $30, the same that it costs me to get a train to Toronto!  I’d been to Paris twice before & Jamie had been a bunch of times before too. We had 3 nights in Paris and Jamiie said he wanted to blow his 950 winnings from Monaco on a fancy hotel, but we eventually decided to stay at a hostel.  We got a room at the Woodstock, a pretty famous hotel near the Sacre de Couer.  We’d planned on doing a lot in Paris,, but we were both pretty knackered, so we ended up going to the Louvre and Les Invalides.  We met a Scottish guy at the Woodstock who spoke fluent French and he & Jamie explored the Latin Quarter.  I thought the Parisiens were pretty rude, but I would have been disappointed if they weren’t.  We got kicked out of out hotel room at 10:30 (they have a rule you’re not allowed in your room between 10:30 and 5), and our room got flooded from the sun roof that was left open.   Our last night in Paris was the best night of the trip, we were planning on a having a few quiet beers at the Woodstock, but the bar was full of tourists participating in a drinking Olympics.

2007.03.30 Friday

Free riding!♪

We went to Whistler mountain!Tadashi, Aki, Shota, Taro, and me Keiji.Contrary to the forecast, it was good weather today. It was the first time in a long time we went up the mountain because we have been shooting with our sleds lately. There were still so much good snow on the peak and it boost our spirits. We all hit the mogul slopes so our legs are so tired but we had so much fun. Some birds came to have lunch with us.Aki with Taro’s sun glasses. In the afternoon, we headed to the snowboard park.It was so crowded because it was sunny. The people there were so greedy to drop in that you couldn't tell when and who was dropping in. It was like a boarder cross race. After we went down the mountain, we had some beers and chicken wings.Chicken wings are so tasty! Some are spicy and some are sweet. When I went to Alaska, I ate chicken wings all the time.Everybody loved it.We had so much fun free riding. Riding with friends is the best!

2007.03.27 Tuesday

Nice day!

It looked like it was going to be sunny so we all met early in the morning.Tadashi, Takumi, Shota, Taro(filmer) and me, Keiji.Aki recovered from his back problem and joined us.We shot a cliff, and an up jump, and rode some lines and explored some new places.

2007.03.26 Monday

Another exhausting day.

This is Takumi! I went shooting via sled with Tadashi, Taro, Keiji, and Shota. The weather could've been better but we managed to get a few shots when the sun peeked out. It’s going to be sunny tomorrow, and we will go shooting from early in the morning! Gotta get a good night's sleep. Good night!

ROAD GAP

Hey it's Keiji! Yesterday, early in the morning, we went to check out the very famous road gap! The members were Tadashi, Takumi, Shota, Dice-K Maru (photographer), Taro-san (videocameraman) and me.

Tadashi can imagine how the landing would be. We came here for the first time in a year and...the slope is really big as I was expecting... If the gap is compared to a building, the building would be how many stories?(^^;) The snow around there was bad and it was dark, so we decided to try this next time when the condition is better. Before we left this gap, we played long cast with snow balls and we tried to hit a piece of wood. It looked easy but it’s not actually. We started to get pissed off that nobody was hitting the target! Tadashi hit the target first and he got beers from everybody! He used to be a pitcher so he was good. Taro-san was 3 base and also a switch-hitter. We threw too many snoballs, like a 100 and now I have pain in my shoulder. Shota was the worst and he has to buy coffees for us. It was raining so we took the day off today and I went to the skate park with Tadashi. Since the skate park is under ground, the air is not clean but we enjoyed ourselves and broke a sweat. Now my muscles are sore.

03/23/07

Snowing Whistler!

Today, we went to a spot where it took an hour by car. It’s nice to go somewhere different. It’s so exciting searching for a nice spot. It's so much fun. Today’s agenda was to hit some pillow lines and Shota and Takumi did some awesome cliff drops. Their lines were pretty cool. After that, we moved on in search of a better place but we couldn’t find any. It’s really hard to find a nice spot, I’m telling you. I want you to know this! (Though its fun trying...)

03/22/07

2007.03.22 Thursday

Hey, yo!This is Keiji the filmer again.I went filming today with Aki & Koni.It was cloudy but we shot some mushroom lines and pillow lines. We had to wait for the sunlight to drop in, and it was tough but we got some nice shots despite the conditions.

  ↓ ↓

In the afternoon, we looked for a place where no one had been to.We kept getting stuck again and again!

2007.03.21 Wednesday

I’m hungry----!We were filming too!!Yesterday, it was nice weather and we did some shooting. Our crew was Taro(video cameraman), Takumi, Shota and me(Tadashi). It was sooo much fun! Shota and Takumi are funny guys. They took forever to double up but they made it! I knew the brothers could do it. It’ll be fun to follow their carreers. Everybody, wait till you see the photos and videos! They are killing it!

03/21/07

2007.03.21 Wednesday

What a relief...We gathered at the parking lot at seven thirty in the morning. The members were Aki, Koni, Maru-san, and me(Keiji). The nice weather made us high. (^^)

The snow was deep and a lot nicer than we thought. No one had come out yet so we had to make our own track to get to the top.But before we arrived to the spot that we had marked out, the other crews like Devun Walsh, Chris Dufficy and Sandbox came one after another and the “spot race” began. Devun’s crew was so fast... They shot a nice spot without wasting any time. We have to be like that...

Aki did a jump and it caused an avalanche and he got carried away a little bit. I was so frightened but he wasn’t hurt at all and he continued to film until nightfall.

We all came back safely and our sleds had no trouble today.I realized the immense values in this.Alright! We will kick ass tomorrow by drinking yummy beer tonight!

DAY OFF

2007.03.20 Tuesday

This is Koni bringing you some news from Whistler under uninspiring weather.I’m at Tadashi’s place now. There are many books, DVDs, rare skateboard decks and some other interesting things. There's Grand Sumo tournament on TV, wow Kakuryu won by a frontal slap-down. It was quick. I took a day off today. The reasons was that my body got worked in last night's session, and the weather is bad. So I decided to go skateboarding in the evening. There is a skate park underground. “Under ground” it’s not just “Under ground” but on the third floor in the basement. We had to take the elevator to get down there, and it’s like going to a hideout. There is no fresh air so I can’t stay there for a very long time or I will get sick. So I just skate a bit and break a sweat and then take off. After I left the hideout I enjoyed coffee at Starbucks.I spend my days off like this. It seems to be bad weather tomorrow too.I want to go snowboarding!!! I’ll wake up at five o'clock am anyway with my fingers crossed!

03/19/07

Waiting for sunshine.

2007.03.19 Monday

Hey, This is Keiji.I went filming with Aki & Koni with our sleds.

We thought that in the morning it would be sunny so we left the house earlier than usual! The other filming crews were also gathering around the gas stand.

But when we got into the backcountry, there were more crowds than I thought and the visibility was very poor. We had to wait for the sunshine to get any filming done. Timing matters. It was tough to find the right timing for filming...

That night, Aki & Koni, Maru-san, Taro-san and I did some sessions at the Heart House.

Aki did a front side 180 and back side 180 from 50-50.Koni was trying to do some fun tricks like jumping over the wood rail. But he tried to jump over the last wood rail and bailed super hard.He fell dangerously but he was OK. Whew!Nice try, Koni!

2007.03.18 Sunday

Hi, there! It’s Taro.(heart’s filmer)When I woke up yesterday morning, it was snowing hard so we(Takumi, Shota, Maru-san and me) thought we could do something so we went to shoot near the house by sled.

We looked around for a spot and then Maru-san suggested one.Takumi and Shota scoped the area while we prepared for the shoot, then the snow became rain!

Since it turned to rain, we went to look for another easier spot and found this place.

Maru-san and I were having a hard time protecting our cameras from the rain.Takumi and Shota tried some tricks although they were wet, and we were able to do some filming because of their effort.Takumi, Shota and Maru-san, you guys did a good job today!

 03/17/07

2007.03.17 Saturday

Snow...!!!Powder!

14cm of new snow!I was so excited about going to Blackcomb with Tadashi! The weather forecast said it was getting warm in the afternoon. But when we got to the parking lot, it was already raining. We reminded ourselves that: ”It is only raining down here, up there it is snowing for sure!” and jumped onto the lift. But unfortunately, it was raining all the way to the top!In addition, there were strong winds. The strong winds were killer. The rain spoiled the long-waited snow...That’s life. I hope we have another snow fall!

We had fun in our own way despite the bad snow.

We found this unique kid. His lift ticket is too long!Whistler kids have a lot of energy even though it’s raining.

2007.03.16 Friday

Yo!Hellooo. My crew (Aki & Koni and me-Keiji) went to another spot.We scoped for a place to shoot some fun tricks. The weather was getting bad in the afternoon so we played with our snowmobiles and came back. (^^)

2007.03.16 Friday

Wassuuuuuuup? This is Taro (filmer).Today’s members were, Tadashi, Takumi, Shota and me.We went up to the mountain and...shi*t! I fell!I bailed when I was driving up a long slope and my sled rolled down over my head! Thank God for my helmet! THANK YOU MY HELMET!After the sled hit me, the sled went down hill all by itself and ran straight toward Tadashi and Takumi with unbelievable speed.Thankfully the sled stopped before it hit Tadashi and Takumi. It was miracle!I was worried about my sled hurting my friends, or what if the sled got broken?! Luckily, nothing bad happened and my wound was only a scratch.

After that we filmed here.

Tadashi, Takumi and Shota did really nice tricks for a total of nine times and it was cool to see them ride in person! It was worth getting hit by my sled!! Thank you riders.I’m looking forward to editing this footage for everyone to see in our DVD!!Ladies and Gentlemen, please wait a little bit more. Thanks!! Three riders were caught in an avalanche.

2007.03.15 Thursday

Yo! What’s up? This is Keiji the heart film’s filmer.I went shooting with Aki, Koni, and Dice-K Maru today. It had been a while since it was cold and today was a very cold day so there were some cars on the side of the highway because they had slipped on the ice. Some areas of the highway were closed. It was pretty bad. The weather was awesome so that I thought it’s going to be a great day, but... it wasn’t. My sled had trouble and I felt disappointed and sad. At the end of the day, I got a good shot with Maru-san and everybody’s help.

2007.03.15 Thursday

Hellooo! This is Taro the heart film’s filmer/editor.I came to Whistler and now I’m crazy about filming and my MAC!!Recently, my life consists of shooting and coming back in the evening, taking a shower, drinking some beers, do some work on my MAC, and then going to bed.In the heart house, there are Aki, Koni, Shota (who got a new MAC lately), and Takumi, who joined us yesterday and me. It’s nice and comfortable.

In the morning, I was about to start my sled and I couldn't find my key! Damn, I did it again!!It was so nice today so I must go up to the mountain to shoot so I went to the snow mobile shop and spent 40 min. each way (by car) to make a spare key quickly and come back. I kept everybody waiting in the beginning of the day. I’m so sorry everybody!Today’s members were Tadashi, Takumi, Shota, Jeff- (Burton’s cameraman), and me.

The places were like this.

Yee-ha! It’s Keiji!I came back to Canada after a month!I was stuck for over two hours in immigration… I was worried that I couldn’t get in to Canada, but I could! There was a huge crowd so the immigration officer gave me the look of evil and then let me through. Dice-K, Shibu from the Red eye, Nakai, Fumio, and Haku were on my plane. They were super jonesing to get back riding in Whistler!

Hi there! This is Keiji - the filmer.Today, I went to AKIHABARA looking for some new camera gear. There were many geeky shops like NAKANO broadway (did you know?) or maybe it is more maniac.People in AKIHABARA are quite characters! (^o^;)

2007.03.02 Friday

moon park 02

Hey, this is Keiji - the filmer for Heart Films. The Moon Park Session held from Feb.26th to 28th at Inawashiro was a hit!We were lucky enough to have our session in good weather at the Moon Park. We finished our shoot but we hope to continue with Moon Park and add extra features and keep making our ideas into reality. It is not a big space but there are many fun items. On the last day, I put aside my camera bag and had fun riding too!I liked the feature with the five jumps in a row. It was super fun to see all the riders do a whole bunch of tricks and one up each other and hit the jump all at once. It was crazy! The riders said that their heads were spinning doing so many back-flips!

03/02/07 moon park

2007.03.02 Friday

On the way back from the Moon Park… We stopped to shoot on the way back from the Moon Park Session.Aki, Shota, and Hiromi were there. Hiromi wasn’t in her best condition so she cheered us on.The spot was a deserted house. It's a spot that would be super scary at night, but under the fine sky it was a nice place to shoot. Aki chose the spot and Shota riigged it up and Hiromi cheered! The three riders had a fun time capturing some interesting images.

03/01/07 moon park

We just finished our 3 day shoot at “The Moon Park Session” with no problems.

The Moon Park Session was incredible! Tadashi Fuse’s vision for a fun park was built and created by “brave projects."All the “heart films” riders rode great and the filmers captured some sick shots for the DVD, HEART FILMS vol. 2!Transworld US cameraman Dice-K Maru and TWS Japan photographer, ZIZO, were there shooting the nonsense.Special thanks to everybody who came to the park!!The DVD and the photos will exceed your expectations!Don’t miss it!

03/01/07 ANYONE MISS LAST YEAR'S HEART FILMS TEASER???

Iwrote a goodbye note in lipstick on your arm when you passed out,
I couldnt bring myself to call, except to call it quits,

Best friends, ex-friends to the end,
Better of as lovers and not the other way around,
Racing through the city, windows down,
In the back of yellow-checkered cars,
Yo-ho ho. Woah-oh-oh.
(Are we)
Yo-ho ho. Woah-oh-oh.
Yo-ho ho. Woah-oh-oh.
(Are we)
Yo-ho ho. Woah-oh-oh

This city says;
Come Hell or high water, when Im feeling hot and wet,
I cant commit to a thing, be it heart or hospital,

Best friends, ex-friends to the end,
Better of as lovers and not the other way around,
Racing through the city, windows down,
In the back of yellow-checkered cars,
Yo-ho ho. Woah-oh-oh.
(Are we)
Yo-ho ho. Woah-oh-oh.
Yo-ho ho. Woah-oh-oh.
(Are we)
Yo-ho ho. Woah-oh-oh

The tombstones are waiting,
They were half engraved,
They knew it was over,
Just didnt know the date.

And I cast a spell over the West to make you think of me,
The same way I think of you,
This is a love song in my own way,
Happily ever after, and gone to waste.

Best friends, ex-friends to the end,
Better of as lovers,
Racing through the city, windows down,
In the back of yellow-checkered cars,
Yo-ho ho. Woah-oh-oh.
(Are we)
Yo-ho ho. Woah-oh-oh.
Yo-ho ho. Woah-oh-oh.
(Are we)
Yo-ho ho. Woah-oh-oh

Best friends, ex-friends to the end,
Better of as lovers and not the other way around,
Ex-friends to the end, and better off as yo-ho-ha-ooh-oh-oh.

This one is a little late but oh well. I recently had the opportunity to go to San Francisco for two days of developer training at Microsoft for work. Needless to say I jumped at the chance for a free trip to my favorite city. I decided to stay through the weekend and explore the city alone and on foot. I even skipped out on training a couple hours early in order to make it to Golden Gate Park for 4:20 on 4/20. I jumped out of my cab exactly at the right moment and bummed a light for my spleef from some lady trying to sell me a bag 5 feet from where I pulled up. I had some great adventures in scoring bags from homeless people, getting loaded at each bar I came across, and soaking up the great culture SF has to offer.

I could not sleep for some reason that Saturday night, which was odd considering I’d probably smoked 10 spleefs that day, and had been drinking since 4 in the afternoon. As I was lying bored in my hotel room at 3:30 am, I came across a weather report forecasting up to 2 feet at Tahoe starting at 2 am. I sprang up, packed my shi*t, and checked out at 4:20 am. It was a sign this was going to be an amazing day. I stopped at Sacramento air port to rent a car with all wheel drive, as they were the only place open at 5:30 in the morning. I wasn’t able to trade in my shi*t ball Ford Taurus, so I had to rent a second car, the worthy Subaru Outback. On the way up to the mountains I came across a sign saying chains were mandatory, in addition to the radio traffic advisory. In Washington chains are not required if you have all wheel drive, but I had never been to the mountains in California. The radio message said they were turning cars around if they did not have chains, and that point was 20 miles down the road from the nearest town. I pulled off to ask if I needed chains or not. The folks at the gas station said they did not know for sure, but offered to sell me some for $50 and would not take them back, even if I didn’t use them. What a racket! I grumbled and I pleaded but they would not budge, surely this is their gravy train. As I was about to relent, a highway patrolman pulled up to refuel. I went out and asked him and he told me that in his 30 years with the highway patrol they had never turned away anyone with all wheel drive *and snow tires, which I had. I sneered at those bitches in the gas station as I strutted off to my car. I wasn’t a mile down the road before I realized I had stolen a bottle of water that I had been sipping while I waited for them to figure out which chains I “needed.” Serves them right!

I arrived at Heavenly just an hour after it opened, but I had no gear other than my soft shell jacket that I usually wear around town.   I was lucky and they had a Burton Demo Center at the base.  Even though I am not a Burton fan, I got to ride pretty decent board and boots. None of the facilities at the base had any outerwear to rent, so I had to buy new pants, gloves, and goggles, none of which I needed of course. I got really good discounts on the gear.  I think I might even make the pants my main pair, but after the second car rental and gas, this was getting to be a very expensive last minute, spontaneous trip. This is the last time you’ll hear me bitch.  It was their last day of the season, and there was a foot and a half of fresh, light, fluffy goodness, and it snowed pretty hard all day. I hit a few 10-15 foot drops, discovered some great pow stashes that stayed nice all day, and met a lot of new friends for the day. The visibility was not great, so I didn’t get to take in all that makes Heavenly just that, but it gives me another reason to go back next year.

I peaced out around 3:30 so I could make my flight back home in Oakland at 9. On the way I found an In-N-Out Burger, the mythical Mormon burger joint which was supposedly divine. I had made it one of my goals for the trip to finally have a Double Double as I’d heard so much about them over the years. I got mine to go and got back on the highway. The weather was starting to clear and large columns of light poured through the clouds, and Stairway to Heaven played on the radio as I ate my Jesus burger. It was an epic moment. I made it to the airport just in time. I was completely delirious at this point from riding hard all day, the lack of sleep, and the sheer number of spleefs I’d blazed on my trip. I was seated in the middle of the row on the plane, in between two other large guys. I am not positive, but I think I was sleeping on one of their shoulders for a good portion of the trip back to Seattle.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE KIDS WHO WERE BORN IN THE

1920's, 30's 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's !!

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they carried us and lived in houses made of asbestos.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes or cervical cancer.

Then after that trauma, our baby cribs were covered with bright colored lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets or shoes, not to mention, the risks some of us took hitchhiking.

As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.

Riding in the back of a pickup truck on a warm day was always a special treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle.

Take away food was limited to fish and chips, no pizza shops, McDonalds, KFC, Subway or Red Rooster.

Even though all the shops closed at 6.00pm and didn't open on the weekends, somehow we didn't starve to death!

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.

We could collect old drink bottles and cash them in at the corner store and buy Fruit Tingles and some fire crackers to blow up frogs and lizards with.

We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank soft drinks with sugar in it, but we weren't overweight because......

WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. We built tree houses and cubby houses and played in creek beds with matchbox cars.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, Xboxes, no video games at all, no 99 channels on cable, no video tape or DVD movies, no surround sound, no mobile  phones, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat rooms..........WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no Lawsuits from these accidents.

Only girls had pierced ears!

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.

You could only buy Easter Eggs and Hot Cross buns at Easter time.......no really!

We were given BB guns and sling shots for our 10th birthdays,

We drank milk laced with Strontium 90 from cows that had eaten grass covered in nuclear fallout from the atomic testing at Maralinga in 1956.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just yelled for them!

Mum didn't have to go to work to help dad make ends meet!

Footy had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!

Our teachers used to belt us with big sticks and leather straps and bully's always ruled the playground at school.

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

Our parents got married before they had children and didn't invent stupid names for their kids like "Kiora" and "Blade".....

This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever!

The past 70 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned

HOW TO

DEAL WITH IT ALL!

And YOU are one of them!

CONGRATULATIONS!

Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it?!

RhAnNa!!!!   Umbrella !!!! Fav. Song!!!!

You had my heart, and we'll never be world apart
Maybe in magazines, but you'll still be my star
Baby cause in the Dark, You can see shiny Cars
And that's when you need me there
With you I'll always share
Because

When the sun shines
We’ll shine together
Told you I'll be here forever
That I'll always be your friend
Took an oath Imma stick it out 'till the end
Now that it's raining more than ever
Know that we still have each other
You can stand under my Umbrella
You can stand under my Umbrella
(Ella ella eh eh eh)
Under my umbrella
(ella ella eh eh eh)
Under my umbrella
(ella ella eh eh eh)
Under my umbrella
(ella ella eh eh eh eh eh eh)

These fancy things, will never come in between
You're part of my entity, Here for Infinity
When the war has took it's part
When the world has dealt it's cards
If the hand is hard, Together we'll mend your heart
Because ..

When the sun shines
We'll shine together
Told you I'll be here forever
That I'll always be your friend
Took an oath Imma stick it out 'till the end
Now that it's raining more than ever
Know that we still have each other
You can stand under my Umbrella
You can stand under my Umbrella
(Ella ella eh eh eh)
Under my umbrella
(ella ella eh eh eh)
Under my umbrella
(ella ella eh eh eh)
Under my umbrella
(ella ella eh eh eh eh eh eh)

You can run into my Arms
It's okay don't be alarmed
(Come into Me)
(There's no distance in between our love)
So Gonna let the rain pour
I'll be all you need and more
Because ..

When the sun shines
We'll shine Together
Told you I'll be here forever
That I'll always be your friend
Took an oath Imma stick it out 'till the end
Now that it's raining more than ever
Know that we still have each other
You can stand under my Umbrella
You can stand under my Umbrella
(Ella ella eh eh eh)
Under my umbrella
(ella ella eh eh eh)

Sitting in his book-lined office, Professor Jacob Karni likes to quote the French novelist Jules Verne.

"Yes, my friends," says Prof Karni, director of the Centre for Energy Research at the Weizmann Institute of Science, quoting from Verne's 1874 novel The Mysterious Island.

Harnessing solar energy cost-effectively is the aim of research

"I foresee that in the future, water will be used as fuel... water will be the coal of the future."

The professor enthuses about the French author's vision 130 years ago that the world's reliance on fossil fuels is unsustainable.

But he disagrees with Verne, famous for 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, in one fundamental respect.

Whereas the French writer saw water as the fuel for the future, the Israeli scientist says the future lies with solar energy.

Suntan

"Even if we were to dam every river in the world and put wind turbines where ever there is wind," says Prof Karni, "it wouldn't be enough to provide for our energy needs. But with solar energy we could meet the world's energy demands."

We will only find the solution when it's really urgent
Prof Karni
For the last 16 years, he has worked with colleagues at the Weizmann Institute, situated in a leafy campus in the Israeli city of Rehovot, to make renewable energy a viable alternative.

The professor, who regularly works a 12-hour day, researches how to harness solar energy in a cost effective way and then transport the energy to the user.

The institute has been researching solar panels that produce a greater yield of energy.

"One of the big problems with solar energy is that the energy is very diluted," says Prof Karni. "It can give you a suntan but not much else."

Snags ahead

But one of Prof Karni's projects has been to use solar energy to produce a non-polluting synthetic fuel that could be used, for example, to power cars.

Environmental activists use solar grill to cook sausages in Moscow
Solar power is finding various other uses worldwide
Last summer, the Weizmann Institute published research that was "a step towards the solution", he says.

Using solar power energy, zinc oxide was heated to 1,200C. The temperature splits the ore, releasing oxygen and creating gaseous zinc, which is then condensed into powder.

When the zinc powder reacts with water, it produces hydrogen that could power a car.

The chemical reaction produces no greenhouse gases and the zinc oxide can be recycled into zinc and the process starts all over again.

Prof Karni says that the research demonstrated that the process is achievable, but problems remain.

For every kilogram of hydrogen gas produced, you would need 60 kg of zinc, which is not feasible on a large scale, he insists.

New Manhattan Project?

But with a map of China hanging in his office, Prof Karni insists we have to think big.

"We could put solar panels here," he says, pointing at west China, "and this could provide the energy for the east of China where most people live. We just need to devise an effective way to transport the energy."

The massive consumption in global energy coupled with rising pollution has made finding a renewable energy alternative more important, he declares.

Over 3.5 billion people live in countries where the consumption of energy more than doubled from 1990 to 2003, according to the Energy Information Administration.

If countries were to form a "Manhattan project" for solar energy, employing the best minds and ploughing enormous resources into research, renewable energy could be challenging fossil fuels in five years, the professor believes.

But that moment of reckoning has yet to arrive.

"We will only find the solution when it's really urgent," he says.
