JumpCamp is still alive. Can you believe it?!

Well it's been getting cold and to keep warm we've been doubling up on sweatpants. Besides that we've been working with our amazing sponsors and crew designing the new park and getting the mountain groomed and ready. Brochures and posters are at the printers and the website has been redone. All the new 2010 dates are up and a schwack of new photos, downloads and all kinds of other jazz. The first ever academy students arrived in early September with big smiles on their faces. We have had the great pleasure of being able to ski and snowboard on Mt. Hood year round. This means 7 days a week 365 days a year. Ever since the students arrived at the academy they have been on snow every day. We have set up multiple jibs and jumps and even brought snow back to Windells campus for a little more creative rail session. The Academy also takes weekly field trips to portland and the surrounding areas. Some of these trips are educational field trips to a historical site in the surrounding cities of portland, we also take industry trips to the many snowboard and ski companies in the area. So far this year we have had the pleasure to visit Atmosphere clothing, Bonfire snowboards, Solomon snowboards, K2, Line skies, Ride snowboards and will soon be seeing Nike. The 2008~09 season was incredible. We had a whole bunch of cool and unique guys and girls train with us this season and a lot of returning campers pushing their limits as well. Big backcountry jump days, deep powder runs, terrain park improvement, Core night park action, secret pillow fields, cornices, tree runs...you name it, we did it all. From novice riders sliding boxes and riding powder for the first time to seasoned returning campers grabbing their inverts, sticking larger cliffs and every level and experience in between.Good times, great memories, huge improvement and the end of the season video to prove it. From all of the staff and coaches - A huge “Thank You” to all of the great campers who allowed us to be a part of their winter season! It was an amazing season with all of you guys here and keep riding on.

My Blog: WSSC- My week there

Day 1
I was pretty nervous when I left home and took a flight to Vancouver BC. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to snowboard as good as the others, but when I went, you're organized into groups depending on your level. It was silly of me to worry, but when i did go, the campers were pretty chill so it didn't even matter anyways. Well anyways, when I landed in Vancouver, I met so many people at the airport going to Whistler Summer Snowboard Camp. When we all boarded the camp bus/shuttle I met even MORE people. During the evening, we were to meet at the mountain room (a huge room with a big screen tv). There we were introduced to all the coaches and info about the camp, like camp rules, schedual, and activites. When i got to my room, there I met my 2 roomates! They were the same level as me at snowboarding and same age too! They were also in my group which was cool. I made friends really quick.


Day 2-6

The park is siiiiiiiick. They have their own terrain on Blackcomb Mountain, with jumps, rails, boxes, and a tent that you can just chill at if you're tired or hungry. The weather felt like it was 20 degrees, it was so hot! I think that's really cool, the weather being really warm and being able to snowboard. I know what you're thinking, but no! The snow isn't all slush! There's plenty of snow and the groomers of their camp groom it everyday so it's all good. I got a pretty sick goggle tan.


Activites

Out of all the activites, I've got to say that bungee jumping was my favourite! You're there with all your friends going bungee jumping! There's other activities like wakeboarding, paintball, mountain biking, driving range/miniputt, skateboarding, indoor rockclimbing, games room/movie lounge, pool/hot tub at the hotel, tennis/volleyball/dodgeball, or just chilling at Whistler Village!


Overall, this was the highlight of my summer!

• Interactive coaching environment. Our coaches are not only professionals, but genuinely love kids and love coaching. Our coaching groups provide a better opportunity for campers to progress, as your coach will get to know you during the week and anticipate your needs and goals.
 
• Value. Everything is included in the camp price. ALL scheduled activities (extra charge for some optional activities) , ALL meals including dinner, a free camp T-Shirt and a camp video.
 
• Private pipe, race lanes, and park. Our on-hill facility is world class with private pipe, race lane, groomed area, terrain park, and lots of other terrain. Because we limit the amount of campers that we can accept each session, our park is never crowded. The resort is located just minutes from the base of the hill, too, so there is no traveling to get to the lifts - they're just a short walk from breakfast!
 
• All meals are included in the price of the camp. Some other camps don't provide you with dinner. This can add-up to $100's of additional dollars to the price of your camp.
 
• No hiking. Our lifts run all day.
 
• Walk to the lifts. Some of the other camps have a 30 minute bus ride just to get to the hill but at our camp you can walk there in 5 min after you eat breakfast at a nice restaurant.

Forbidden Plateau Snow Report, March 10/09

Mountain temperature: nice and warm.
Wind speeds: fast at times, slower at other times.

The first JumpCamp session was awesome! The conditions were wicked with all the new snow we've gotten on the Island in the last month. The season's have switched here this year; we had spring in the winter and now we're having winter in the spring. Man, it's total global weirding.... We had a gorgeous day on Saturday and all the campers loved the new park design. Sunday was a little soggy but that didn't slow anyone down and everyone really progressed their shred skills over the weekend. Thanks to all the coaches for their hard work and all of our killer sponsors for all the prizes!

My Blog: One month update on broken wrist

   Okay it's been officially one month since the suregery.
I thought I'd write more often. But this is where I am at this point.
There is much less peripheral pain these days, and I can sleep peacefully at night although putting the arm outside the bed sometimes makes the arm a little sore.
 
I can type pretty proficiently right now. I used a sponge for exercises. Now I am using two of them and a pack of mung beans. My ability to pronate/supinate without pain is getting there but not quite there(I can't put on contacts or open a door until that is normal again).
 
 The biggest problem at this point is I can't write yet mainly because the first four fingers have been significantly impacted and still pretty stiff. I would like to start physical therapy, but that will be in two weeks. I will not be going snowboarding again this season because the thought of another two months of this would not be worth it. I had a pretty bad break mainly because my hand fingers are so stiff I can't perform basic tasks essential to work: shaking hands, writing diagrams, opening doors.
 
In any case, I am progressing slowly but surely. Next step is the campbells soup can gripping and typing like with elbow down not elevated. Some exercises I have also started are: flexing extending each fingers and in between the finger webs.
 
I get to see the doctor in two weeks when the bones are fully healed and start pt. Cheers in the meantime.

This camp is for female snowboarders who want to have fun and progress their skills, especially in the park and backcountry. We're stoked to have Etienne Gilbert as one of our newest Pro coaches. Etienne brings to Core Camps a ton of experience as he's Camp of Champion's head coach in the summers. Etienne moved from Quebec to Whistler in 1998 and has since risen to become one of Canada's top Pros. He's had sick video parts throughout the last decade and more recently with Sandbox and Sugar Shack. Snowboard Canada also just did a 10 page story/interview  about Etienne in their 2009 Buyer's guide issue. Welcome to the team.
Other new pro coaches for this year: Chris Dufficy and Chris Wimbles.

I love receiving last minute phone calls with the 2 stroke hum of snowmobiles in the background. PortersTahoe.com Team Rider Brendon Drury hit me up and said he and his younger brother were up at Mt. Rose riding around on his snowmobiles in search of some terrain for some snowboarding.



It is always fun riding side saddle getting up to your destination as it can be quite a task. I did bail once off the sled on my belly like a land seal! Out in the backcountry you never know what kind of characters you'll run into as we ran into these slednecks who offered us cheeseburgers, beer and some of that funny smelling "rope".



After a brief chat with these friendly dudes (Brendon snatched a brew), we proceeded to find our zone where we could get some shots. Brendon dropped into a face that was really sunbaked and it was hard to get the spray that we wanted. It was a fun turn but we wanted more.



Brendon got another ride up on the sled and I was scouting a zone trying to find a good place where he could snap a turn. The snow surface had about a 3-4 inch crust layer on it so I had to find an area that was thinner. I found just the spot.
Brendon hiked over to where i was camped out & we planned our shot.



In pure anal photographer fashion...I had to light this shot up. Packing light this time out I had my Lumedyne 400 WS Action Pack, Canon 1D Mark II, Canon 15mm fisheye lens, Canon 50mm 1.4 prime, and my Canon 70-200mm lenses. This is a great 3 lens & one light setup to have out in the backcountry or anywhere for that matter.This is what we got.



Not bad considering the snow only had an inch of crust in this zone. He did break through to the bottom and hit the rock, but in the end it was all worth it. On the way down we had to stop just one more time to take in another epic Lake Tahoe sunset.

My Blog: christmas shredding in the swis alps

After an hectic pre season I was ready and excited to leave to Austria with my friend Vanessa Andrieux. We go there every year to find good snow condition, I was all packed, board and bags in my trunk and as i was driving back from Barcelona it started dumping everywhere, and by the time i was in Switzerland my home mountains were covered by a good 60cm of fresh snow ! This is when we both decided to join the Demonium base camp in les diablerets (definitely the best place to stay, hang, mini shred and skate up there) and shoot a couple things home before heading to the austrian mountains. We waisted the first day looking for features to shoot along the road and at 12pm, after 3 hours driving around for nothing, we decided to go up on the mountain and shred. luckily the place wasn’t totally tracked yet, I found a couple good friends at the first chair lift, they took me to the good spot and I got chest deep for my first run of the winter !! I can’t remember a better start of the season ever ! sik ! The next day we built a kicker with Eman, Damien, Nico and Tonton not too far from the road in a safe area as avalanche danger was quite high at that time. It was fun to be shaping a kicker already. The snow was deep in the landing, the sun was shining we had a good thermos with hot tea and good meet, cheese, bread and chocolate. Family style ! After that we joined Nicolas Droz in Chatel to get a couple shots, each day we were pushing the austrian destination a bit later and we finally never made it there. That’s when my friend Annie Boulanger called, there was no snow in whistler and she jumped in the plane to come shred with me.. I was so stoked to have her here because I m always the one going to canada or US and for once I got to show my place to a good friend ! as soon as she got off the plane we called Jonas Emery who could eventually give us heads up on the conditions where he was staying.. and we ended up staying at his place for a good 4 days.. We got sik tree runs in still really good snow on our first day and it dumped overnight !! We went to Verbier the next day, same thing, good tree pow runs under the cabin, and the great thing is that no one was on the slopes before christmas ! We joined Emilien Badoux the next day for the same luck with sunshine this time! After that we headed to my home resort with my both of my parents my cousin, my boyfriend and 2 other good friends with whom we shredded all weekend.. It really felt like christmas ! This last couple of weeks were such a blast, I got to practice some Quebecquien expressions, I got to shred for the fun of it which happens very rarely, i got to stay at my grand parents cabin and the conditions were fantastic ! That was definitely my best christmas present this year.. and i wish you just as much fun and good shred !

My Blog: Snowing all week in Whistler!

After a week of consistent snow, the riding here in Whistler is back in business! We're into our 5th week of camp and the second group of long term campers are packing their bags and preparing to hit town as we speak.
 
Christmas in the camp houses was celebrated in true Whistler style with wine and cheese, pressies, partying in town and of course, Christmas day spent riding on the mountain... how else would you rather spend your holidays?!
 
We're super stoked that we've been able to take our groups to secret powder stashes on the mountain without getting stuck in long holiday lift lines. Also, now that the upper alpine lifts are staring to open, we're looking forward to some steep pow runs in the bowls and maybe a hike or two for some of the best untracked powder on the mountain. It's that kind of inside local knowledge that means we can ride harder, faster and in deeper pow that anyone else hahaha!
 
The terrain parks are already starting to look good. The Nintendo Park on Blackcomb has a number of hip, box and rail features and a couple of jumps. As more snow falls we'll begin to see the Terrain Garden (beginner's park) and Higher Level (XL) parks take shape. We're also looking forward to seeing the double rainbow stall feature and dancefloor jibs they're building in the Whistler park using the cable reels from the construction of new Peak to Peak gondola.
 
It even looks like there's almost enough snow for our first backcountry jump day to be held in a secret location yet to be revealed... can't wait!

Sędziowie oceniają tylko udane triki, a całość rozgrywana jest w formie jam session na rozsypanych jak w skateparku przeszkodach.

Całość ogólnie inspirowana jest deskorolką stąd też nie kładzie się nacisku na zaciekłą rywalizację tylko na dobrą zabawę i ogólnie rozumiany progres. Są trzy kategorie - 15 i poniżej, 16 i powyżej oraz dziewczęca. Do rozdania przewidizano mnóstwo nagród i gadżetów a poza tym każdy z uczestników może liczyć na sporą ilość kanapek z masłem orzechowym.

Forty of the world’s best skiers and snowboarders will descend on Squaw Valley USA this winter, where for the first time ever they’ll compete on a legendary section of the mountain during the Freeride World Tour Event wtfhttp://www.freerideworldtour.com> : Nissan Tram Face, anticipated to take place February 28th, 2009.

The Freeride World Tour event at Squaw Valley USA, the site of the 1960 Winter Olympics, will help set a new standard for freeride competition, attracting some of the best in the sport.  The Tour promises to be demanding for participants and exciting for spectators when for the first time the legendary Tram Face, closed since Squaw Valley opened in 1949, will be open for the pro event.

”The Tram Face at Squaw Valley is legendary terrain that many have dreamed to ride but few have dared to,” said longtime Squaw Valley USA skier Cody Townsend, ranked 5th in the 2008 World Freeride Tour.  ”Having the first ever competition on Tram Face is like the first time Monaco was raced in Formula 1, Teahupoo was surfed and the Masters was played at Augusta. Opening up the off-limits terrain for the competition is a dream come true for anyone that’s driven into Squaw Valley and seen the amazing Face that dominates the mountain.”

Participants arrive at Squaw on February 26, opening ceremonies take place on Friday, February 27 and competition is scheduled for Saturday, February 28 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. In the case of inclement weather, the event will be postponed to an alternate date between February 29 and March 5. Spectators can enjoy the festive atmosphere with live music and ongoing events at The Village at Squaw Valley plus another village at Squaw Valley’s High Camp.

Riders participating in the Squaw event, which is the second leg of the Freeride World Tour, will arrive in California after showing their stuff in Sochi, Russia. After Squaw, the riders will travel to Tignes, France and Verbier, Switzerland. After this final event, the four Freeride World Champions (ski/snowboard/men/women) will be crowned.

Local Whistler Coaching Company Ramps Up Program Offerings in Response to U.S. H2B Visa Shortage

As the international community of snowboard instructors and coaches scrambles to find work outside of the U.S. for the 2008/9 winter season, Whistler B.C.'s Pro Ride has chosen to step up training program offerings to entice snowboard pros to stay in the industry and work in Canada.  After running successful coaching and instructional programs for the past 10 years, Pro Ride has announced its plan to increase instructional training programs for snowboard coaches and instructors who would otherwise have worked at U.S. resorts prior to the H2B visa shortage, which was announced in January of 2008.

“The current difficulties the US ski industry is experiencing with the lack of H2B visas for temporary workers reinforces the opportunities for international workers to come and train and work in Canada,” said Anthony Crute, the founder and head coach of Pro Ride.  “While the H2B visa situation will hopefully be rectified within the next year, instructors and coaches can get a start in Canada and prepare themselves for US employment."  Crute's emphasis on bringing on professional athletes and internationally certified coaches to train Pro Ride participants has produced instructors who now are employed at winter resorts around the world.

Pro Ride and its impressive roster of coaches begin offering programs as early as December of 2008.
