Events/News - Whistler Blackcomb: It's ALL about the glades!
By: WhistlerBlackcomb

Day 15/30: As I’m trying to decide which adventure to write about, I’m getting far too distracted by the thought of fresh snow in the alpine. Could yesterday really have been the first day of spring?! Not on the mountains, not in the trees and not in my mind.

The other day I uploaded with two good buddies; Stu and Derek. Stu had his Vholdr cam so we were on a tree mission! It’s no secret the coverage hasn’t been good enough to venture too deeply into the woods this season. That was until last weekend when a huge storm hit Whistler Blackcomb dumping 158cms in total. So that was our cue to head out and rip some pow!

Stu’s been around these parts for ages, so I was expecting him to teach us a thing or two, but it just so happens we showed him some sweet spots he had never hit before. We started in Crystal by dropping off our bags at the snow fort, from there we headed to a super fun & short section of trees referred to as “the picnic table.” It’s literally a picnic table sitting on top of a knoll in the trees. It has an awesome view of the valley but that’s not why you go there. Below the table is a sweet pillow line, but watch your speed as it ends in tight trees and comes out onto a cat track.

Next we ducked into some tight trees to skier’s right of Rider’s Revenge; this took so much out of us! There was a big cliff in there that we had to maneuver around and that wasn’t too much fun. My advice, stick to marked gladed runs if you don’t know the area. These trails are actually protected bear habitat in the summer, so keep an eye out for the signage explaining the bear program. I would suggest checking out a glade like Arthur’s Choice or Outer Limits in the Crystal zone to get some good turns in spaced-out trees.

After lunch we zipped over to 7th Heaven to session the trees there. It was waist deep and untouched in places! I had such a great day laughing and shouting the whole time with good friends. There’s nowhere I’d rather be than a powdery tree run on Blackcomb!

Keep on shredding!

Events/News - Whistler Blackcomb: Heavenly pow stashes & snow slashes
By: WhistlerBlackcomb

Favorites. We all have them; whether its ride buddies, afternoon snacks or secret spots. I frequently get asked on chairlift rides, “Where’s your favorite spot? What’s your favorite mountain?” I could answer that question very quickly and easily but I won’t get into that now.

What I will say is that 7th Heaven doesn’t usually fall under the “favorite” category for me, but for some reason I was drawn there every day of my weekend. Perhaps it was the sunny skies, fresh lines or good group of friends, but regardless it was awesome.

It started, as it always does, early Sunday morning with a coffee and a few calls to friends. A bunch of us met at the base of the Excalibur Gondola and headed up Blackcomb. Most of the mountain was pretty busy as it snowed 17cms the night before and the alpine hadn’t opened yet, so we cruised around the Jersey Cream area to get a feel for the snow - soft and cold but it was warming up fast!

As soon as the light board switched 7th Heaven to green (open!) we shot over to 7th Ave and cut down through the trees to Expressway. Nothing beats cutting fresh lines and hearing your friends holler as they do the same! It was clearly a tree run day so at the top of 7th we headed far skier’s right for the trees under the water reservoir. It was as if no one knew they existed! The only tracks I encountered were those of my friends in front of me.

I must admit, after many years riding these mountains, it was the first time I have ever paid those trees any attention and now I get why so many people are in love with 7th Heaven!

I then spent the next couple of days exploring that whole zone, revisiting the trees and doing a few zippy laps on Cloud 9. I most definitely had a good time and as that classic Whistler bumper sticker says, “Go to Heaven, Ski like Hell!” I did exactly that! (Minus the skiing part…)

Keep on shredding!

Today I just arrived in Saas Fee for the first day of the FIAT rookie camp.. we all arrived in saas fee in the sun which became rain after a short and necessary lunch brake..  Romain de Marchi, the 15 kids and I. The rookies were selected based on small video parts they sent of themselves snowboarding, and invited by FIAT to come spend 3 days with us.. we first introduced each of us.. the hello my name is, i come from and my favorite trick is.. etc.. then we played beach volleyball in the sand with a soccer ball so right now i m pretty much soaking wet with about a pound of sand in my hair 2 radiating red fore arms and 2 scratched knees .. oh! and guess who is here? remember Ramona? the coolest letter i ever recieved? well her sister and brother are here.. and she draw another really cool pic!

our first riding day was chill.. i didn’t feel like riding much but it was cool to watch the kids ripping and to feel their motivation.. being in saas fee reminds me of when i came here to ride everyday for 4 months.. and those kids  are in that exact state of mind.. they want to shred all day everyday.. it s inspiring! after riding we had a run through the vita course with Romain explaining to the kids how important training is to avoid injuries.. and we played some more volley ball..

the second started with very icy slopes and kicker but got really fun after a couple hours.. it was fun to shred and to get some of their motivation. the afternoon was spent on tips on how to contact sponsors, the basics of a sponsorship contract and a couple of what to do and not to do on interviews.. then we went hitting some golf balls.. the cool thing with this camp is that they didn’t know eachother before coming here and now they are shred buddies! i m sure they ll keep in contact with each other the camp.. and that’s really cool!

sunday sunny morning on the glacier of saas fee judging all the kids hitting the last 2 kickers of the park.. out of the 15 rookies, it was cool to see the 2 girls shred.. Anais Cettou was doing good on her frontside 360 and 540.. for the boys the top 3 rode really well; Basile Specker got 3rd with stylish and good amplitude on backside 720 to frontside 720, David Bertschinger finished 2nd with good style on frontside 900 to cab 720, and our FIAT ROOKIE 2008 is Patrick who stomped almost each time with great style and technicity, changing tricks on each of his runs, backside 720 to frontside 720, cab 900, switch backside 900 to backflip (those are the stomped ones).. quite impressive for a 14 years old!!

I was stoked to take part of this FIAT camp and get to meet all those young shredders.. hopefully i ll see them soon again.. they’ll probably take my job soon enough!

Smaller than Big Sky, but blue tree runs with pow made it better.
Premier w/ CO2s
Had a few good slams, catching toe on traverse and hurting left shoulder a bit.  Also little bruise on chest from cell.
Lifts weren't as forgiving as Big Sky.  Slammed off one.  Right after me, two more boarders did the same.  Could have been inattentive lifties.  Who knows?
Got separated from buddies and tried to find them w/o luck.  Should have used the Motorolas.
Quit earlier than them since legs were tired.  Also slams may have taken a bit out of me.
All in all, a nice change of pace from Big Sky.

Well, my last trip up to the mountain was more embarassing than fun being as I hadn't gotten on my board in almost 3years. So a handful of buddies and I drove 3 hours up into Mt. Hood yesterday and did some free riding. I can barely move but I GOT MY GROOVE BACK! I swear I ate more snow than I did when I was first learning. No pain, no game, right? And I am definitely in pain. On my way down the mountain I hit a lip I wasn't expecting and did a superman fly right into a patch of snow, landing head first in a little patch of trees and doing a backflip after I hit so i was laying on my back, ouch. I'm pretty sure that would be why I can't move my head around very well. Looks like it's going to be another trip back to the chiropractor. Dammit. You better beleive I will be right back up next weekend though  ;P

Sunday I'll be going up with my usual peeps to Big Boulder to session their parks. Its supposed to snow Sunday too, so I hope it doesn't make traveling TOO sucky. I bought gear to wax and tune up my board today, and tuned up and waxed my board to the best of my ability/recollection from how one of my buddies did it. I hope it came out okay, I really winged it!

So I wake up on the 24th to the song "Life In The Fast Lane" by The Steve Miller Band. My dad is obviously up and started on the renovations upstairs. Me being the stylish one preferred to sleep in but my dad had other plans. "Fix the table saw, do the electrical, than we need to set in the counter top on the island." he says to me as I lay mindless in my bed. So I get up and do my First 2 jobs with little problems. Its about +2 outside and raining with a bit of snow mixed in. Its shi*tty. So we get around to the counter top and it takes us 4 hours to get it just right. but in those 4 hours the weather got cold and the rain turned to straight snow. It fell heavy and I knew the gang was setting something up at Alicia's Farmhouse so I grab my jib gear, my light and my generator and head on out. Its only a 5 min. drive 2 Alicia's but the weather had changed so much that, add in my Ford Taurus-waggons bald tires, I missed almost every turn! It took more along the lines of 15 mins! So I FINALLY get there and its snowin' like crazy. So they take me out to the jib and there it is, A tabletop built with a six pack of straw-bails and snow pushed up by a tractor with a blade on the front. Its not huge, about 15 feet (gap) from lip-to-landing. I'm totally not prepared for it. A quad tow-in, need Goggles and Bandanna with a thicker jacket. Where are they, you ask? AT HOME! So I jump back in my car, it snowed an inch since I got there! So I go back home and grab my shi*t. I'm heading back and what do ya know, I can't make it up my hill! Theres to much snow for my bald tires to get through, so I do a Slow-mo Rockford And header home. I get to the bottom of the hill at my driveway, I miss it completely and hit the ditch on the far side. So I walk down my kilometre-long drive way back to my house to collect the posse and get my waggon unstuck. So we get it unstuck, and I, feeling defeated by the weather and unable to jib I unloaded my stuff. Just when I thought all hope of having a fun weekend jib was lost, Marc calls me up, I tell him my situation and he says "Don't worry I'll come and get you, we shall jib even if it kills us!" and I say "OK" so he picks me and my gear up in Alicia's dad's Dodge Crew cab Diesel and off we go to the jib. So we get there and we set up the lighting for the jump and footage taking. We use 2 halogen lights hooked up to the generator, plus tractor and truck lights. As we get into the sesh, Marc pulls a 3 followed by a Backflip-180, almost lands it but... Woaw! That hangs a few jaws. That cranks the gnar up a notch! So Curtis (New-schooler Skier, our only skier buddy) starts throwing Backflips and Lincolns (He didn't land much but it was awesome to watch!) So I step up, method, and Slow 180 didn't stick either. Than I go for a frontflip, I get invert and.... BANG!!! LANDING!!! I stick it.... Directly on my head! Man that hurt! I still have neck pains. So I go 1 more time, lookin' for a 540 but as luck would have it I catch a funny edge and air totally off the jump, crashing down beside the landing, narrowly missing the shovels and boards lying there. Man, I'm lucky! So the night ends around 12:30ish, we go inside and go over the footage before we hit the sac. And as always, there is a lack of beds, so me and Curtis buddy up and share a double, and we are not small people. We awake to the site of whiteness coming in through the window. Its still snowing. Alot. Curtis stole all the blankets during the night and even had enough audacity to throw one on the ground instead of giving it to me. What a jerk! Its about noon and we are about to go jib when Curtis's mom shows up to bring him to a buddies to go hit up a Metal Show, so we're down one jibber. So we head out, hit it up and end it with a group hug and frozen fingers. A fine jib for the weekend. Marc drops me off at the top of my Valley because I know for a fact that the weather has turned it into "The Pit of No Return." So after I guide him in his 18 point turn, we say our goodbyes as he disappears into the blizzardy darkness, I make my way down on a blind shred to my house. I hike my driveway, get inside the porch and I eat some pizza. The Perfect way to end a Perfect weekend. Thanks Winter, so far so good.

Here we go again, can't wait to be on the snow riding! This year I have a different situation since I'll be losing my riding partner for this season... Jessica is pregnant! Yes, we will have a little snowboarder by the beginning of next April so she will have to seat this one out.

We knew that we were going to start trying last summer so at the end of last season I bought a season pass for Norway Mountain. I'll be looking for riding buddies every weekend so let me know if you need a ride to Norway, I'll be gladly to pick you up in GB or on the way there.

SEE YOU ON THE HILL!!

Hey to everyone and anyone who actually reads this stuff!
Thought i better find the time to update my snowboard.com/colonies.com account, seem to use this site less and less after most of my kiwi friends are bebo.com addicts, and i mean ADDICTS! lol.

New Zealand Winter was a short one this season, which was gutting! got a heap of riding in tho ... 1 week up at coronet peak in queenstown, which was amazing, learnt a heap riding up there. First jump of the season I unfortunetly landed on my face, slitting my lip/biting my lip, and grazing my chin - got some worried looks round the cafe at lunch. Went on a few school trips lending a hand with the younger OE classes so they cud pass there snowboarding certificates! which was mint, gave a few of the younger boys a run for there money...god that felt good. And seeing as i had a pass for cardrona - in wanaka, me and a few buddies got up the mt every friday/sunday if we cud, which rocked! we were going atleast once a week, as well as school and work - tryna keep the petrol fund going! shame the season didnt get a kick start like last year, but still an amazing new zealand boarding season got a heap of photos which i will post later!

So ...What else have i been up to...
Moved to Dunedin, new zealand (south island), 2hours away from my home town, and 3 hours away from my home mt *tear*. Moved with my parents, leaving my older bro back home. Studying down here next year maybe...still tossing up going over seas and catching up with the gang! but we'll see. Been drinking way 2 much, partying way 2 much, im surprised i dont have a booze gutt yet...(touch wood) I enjoy the old wine bong - getting messy IS the key! Give me a message, and dont be shy! miss all the snowboard.com regs! Sorry ive been slack on this, i promise ill get my arse into gear!

Love the one an only
Kiwi - Mel :)
p.s. Mite see u on the YOUR moutain ur this season...fingures crossed - any biatches keen? wheres everyone at this season?

We haven't announced this unitl now so pay very special attention. We printed one very special Still Bastards DVD cover which looks like this:

If by chance you've ordered a Still Bastards DVD online and it features the Benji/JF GT doubling shot for cover art you've just won yourself plus one a night in Paris. We're not talking Paris France what you've won is one night of partying, which also includes a cozy spot on the floor at JF Pelchats Whistler hostel in Emerald. This dream night come true of "french style" partying can only be attained through copies of the Still Bastards purchased through the www.isdsgn.com site. Good luck. Either way you' ll need it..

Squamish news: Muriel "Kale's Grandmorther" has just recently founded a theatre night which is held every Wednesday at their Squamish home. When asked why she responded " I wanted to give Kale and his snowboard buddies something else to do besides wasting their time with those funny cigarettes and facebook".

Photographed below: Mikey, Paavo and Jbone exploring theatre at the Stephens' house.

The groups rendition of the classic "The Wizard of Oz" will premiere at the squamish rec centre at the end of the month. Keep posted for details.

I was in charge of cooking the meal so I was making everyone's dinner.Everybody worked hard splitting the fire wood to make the campfire!!I never slept in a tent before but it was more comfortable than I expected!!!2日目はモービルで撮影に行くチームと、テントの近くで遊ぶアイテム作るチームと二手に分かれてそれぞれ夜のセッションに向けて、アイテム作りをがんばってました。 。。。。。。アキ君ホントにごめんなさい!!!!!!!!!!!On the second day, we split up into two teams. One went shooting by sled and the other made some items for the night session near the tents.I was in the team that went shooting and I was so excited about riding a sled for the first time. MY! GOD!!! I turned off the engine right away and put snow on the fire again and again. After the fire went dead, I made a mad dash to get to everybody!!!!!I was so panicked that I didn’t understand what the hell was going on!!!I told everybody about the fire with sweat all over me, and Tadashi and some friends went to rescue the sled. The cause of the fire was that I didn’t unlock the brake lock.I burned Aki’s new sled in my first experience of riding a sled... This work was sooooooo hard!!!2 day’s food for 15 people...can you imagine how much food we had to precook?????I really thought that the school lunch ladies didn't do much!! Way too much bad weather! It’s Koni! This is a photo of Shota.Today was cloudy and on the mountain was foggy, but I went riding to Blackcomb with Shota and Kosuke. The parking lot was engulfed in fog, but as we got up through the gondola and up the 1st lift and 2nd lift the fog was gone, but it was still cloudy. Despite being cloudy the visibility was not that bad so we went to the park and the half pipe. Surprisingly, even though it is already May the half pipe was so big and well groomed. I saw someone get chucked from the pipe for going way too big! When riding slushy snow in the Spring, everyone should be conscious of the speed that each board can generate. Do not trust other people.I hope it will be sunny soon!At the heart house, there are three paper dolls hanging praying for rain/snow.They don’t work too well. Aki’s fishing report! Helloooo, it’s Aki!We went fishing yesterday! It was soooooo much fun!!! I was super excited about catching a fish! I almost fell from the boat! (If I had fallen into the sea, it would be very cold!) I really thought that the fun thing about fishing was my heart pounding while you waiting for the fish to bite on my line.I loved fishing!I really want to go fishing again and I will catch a bigger-fish next time!Hey Yuho, when's our next time fishing? by Tadashi pretending to be Aki.byアッ君じゃなくてタダシでした〜。 I went shooting with Jun, Koni, and Kosuke. It happens too often lately that we have to wait for the sun to peek out. We managed to shot these photos when the sky was clear. There was blue sky for just a moment. コニのbs540 Koni’s back side 540. That’s what we did today! We went shooting for the first time in a few days!We were expecting some good snow for we had a bit of snow yesterday, but the mountain and the sky looked threatening...We waited for the sun for a while but it was still so foggy for way too long. The village was sunny though...too bad.On such occasions, we go to the groomed slopes of Blackcomb... It’s too foggy to tell if I was going forward or not. Shota changed his hair style to a mohawk. Yeah! 楽しみだ〜〜[:イヒヒ:] We are now planning to go snowmobile camping with sleeping bags! Can’t wait! Day off. [:ひやひや:]Hello, it’s Keiji. We had some hard days lately and everybody is taking a day off today. The snow at the base of the mountain is melting fast, so shooting with our sleds is getting harder because the dirt road ride is getting long. I feel sorry for riding our sleds in those conditions. These are some photos from shooting with Tadashi two days ago.We woke up early but the weather wasn’t good, so we went back home once and waited. We kept checking on the conditions and skateboarded while we waited. In the afternoon, the weather was getting nice so we went shooting. There was still a threat of avalanches but we could shoot okay. 。。It was about time to leave (7pm) when Tadashi’s sled stopped suddenly. We were like “What the hell! That’s so sudden!” but we just had try and get back home for it was getting dark. You do not want to be in the backcountry overnight! On the way back, we had such a hard time like...We both fell because we couldn’t climb up the slope, and the rope that connected our sleds broke off and the bumper flied off right at me...While all of this was going on, darkness arrived and Tadashi made a bonfire...etcWe had to tow the sled on the dirt road so Tadashi’s sled got very dirty. Finally we got to the parking lot but putting the engine-stopped sled into the truck was like pushing a dead elephant up the stairs. We needed one more man-power...Our muscle were so strained and we were so muddy. We started getting a natural high... [:たらーっ:]After an hour or so of using our brains and power we were able to put the sled on the car at last!High five!! We were so happy at that moment. IF you are bored you can play DEAL or No Deal... CHECK OUT MORE AT: WWW.HEARTFILMS.COM.
