Sound the didgeridoos, the 2008 Burton Australian Open has come to a close and Torstein Horgmo (NOR) and Jamie Anderson (USA) have come out on top, winning the men’s and women’s slopestyle competition today at Perisher Blue Resort. After a week of dodgy weather, the sun broke through this morning, illuminating the 400m long slopestyle course that featured a downrail, battleship rail and three massive kickers.

With a field comprised of an Olympic gold medalist, the men’s and women’s New Zealand Open slopestyle winners, two TTR World Champions, six Winter X-Games medalists and some of Australia’s best, the day promised some serious riding and it didn’t disappoint. While the standard was high in both the men’s and the women’s fields, both winners were stand outs with Torstein Horgmo nearly ten points clear of Danny Davis (USA) and Jamie Anderson an impressive 15 points clear of her nearest rival, Raewyn Reid (CAN).

Horgmo’s $7,500 AUD winning run featured a fakie backside tail 270 on the downrail, into a switch 50/50 Cab 180 on the battleship, followed by a backside 720 melon, into a frontside 900 indy, finishing with a ridiculously big switch backside 1260 melon. “I feel really good right now,” said Torstein. “It’s crazy, I thought this course was so much fun, better than last year; you could do bigger tricks and have way more flow through the park. Everybody killed it today so I feel really fortunate to end up on top.”

Danny Davis landed 2nd place with a run that included back-to-back 900’s, riding away with $3,500 AUD. Eric Willet (USA) took home $1,500 AUD for his 3rd place finish, his winning run featured a switch backside 900 mute and frontside 1080 tailgrab.

Women’s slopestyle champion Jamie Anderson continued to be unstoppable in her pursuit for perfection with another podium win. She started her winning run with a tailpress on the downrail, followed by a noseslide-to-fakie on the battleship, sticking a switch backside 360 stalefish on the first kicker, into a Cab 540 mute on the second, finishing with an frontside 540 melon. “I am so stoked to win, it was a really fun day and we had great weather,” said Anderson. “The other girls were sweet; everyone was riding so well, it was an awesome day.”

Raewyn Reid had an impressive showing for the ladies with a backside lipslide on the downrail and a 50/50 frontside boardslide on the battleship, taking home 2nd place and $3,500 AUD. Kara Rennie (CAN) won $1,500 AUD and the third place title by styling it out on the rails with a backside lipslide and 50/50 to boardslide.

With the Burton Australian Open over, it’s on to the Canadian Open, taking place at CODA’s Canada Olympic Park in Calgary from December 1-7, 2008. The Canadian Open is the third stop on the 2008-2009 Burton Global Open Series. Jamie Anderson and Luke Mitrani are currently in the lead for the $100,000 Burton Global Open Series Championship title. The BGOS boasts the most lucrative cumulative prize purse in snowboarding – over $900,000 – with equal prize money to men and women

After today’s Swatch TTR 5Star slopestyle event, Jamie Anderson continues to defend her 2007/08 TTR World Tour Champion title, while Chas Guldemond maintains his tour lead. For more information, visit www.ttrworldtour.com.

The land down under was taken over today as crowds flocked to watch the final men’s and women’s halfpipe competition at Perisher Blue Resort. Always a crowd favorite, the halfpipe finals were not to be missed as a field of impressive names threw down runs that were equally as impressive.

The men were first to drop and it was Mason Aguirre who showed strength early on with the highest first run score of 92.83. Fellow FREND Luke Mitrani topped Aguirre’s score with his second run that consisted of a frontside 900 tailgrab, followed by a backside Japan air, into a frontside 720 indy, finishing with a switch double backflip, the likes of which have never been seen at a halfpipe competition in Australia.

Not to be outdone, Aguirre rose to the challenge with a run that started with a Cab 1080 mute, followed by a frontside 900 melon, into a backside rodeo 540 indy, finishing with an alley-oop backside rodeo 720 indy, earning him the win and $7,500 AUD with a margin of less than one point. Aguirre had this to say of his win, “It was tough. Luke made me work for it but it was so much fun riding with the crew. The pipe held up really well and I’m stoked to win here in Oz.”

Mitrani held on to 2nd place and rode away with a big check for $3,500 AUD. Markus Malin, who landed 2nd place in New Zealand at the Burton Open last month, took home another podium win for Finland with 3rd place and $1,500 AUD.

In the women’s competition, Olympic gold medalist, Hannah Teter took the lead early on, with a technical run that combined back-to-back 540’s, into a 360 indy, followed by a Cab 720, finishing with a melon to fakie. “The pipe was really fun, everyone was riding super good considering the snow was a little slow,” said Teter of her win. “It was really motivating watching the guys and the girls throw down their tricks.”

Giving Teter a run for the money was Paulina Ligocka out of Poland, who has not competed in nearly a year due to injury. Ligocka showed no signs of struggle as she stuck a 720 on the first hit and landed a McTwist in her highest scoring run, taking home 2nd place and $3,500 AUD. New Zealand Open halfpipe champion Jamie Anderson won $1,500 AUD and the third place title. Anderson, the back-to-back X-Games slopestyle gold medalist and winner of the slopestyle competition at the New Zealand Open last month will take on her competitors tomorrow during slopestyle finals.

Luke Mitrani and Jamie Anderson are currently in the lead for the $100,000 Burton Global Open Series Championship title. After today’s Swatch TTR 5Star halfpipe event, Hannah Teter jumped 134 ranks into World No. 21, her highest rank ever. Jamie Anderson stays in World No. 1 as well as Chas Guldemond. Luke Mitrani and Stephan Maurer both entered into the Swatch TTR Top 5.

1 Mason Aguirre USA BURTON 94.17 $7,500
2 Luke Mitrani USA BURTON 93.50 $3,000
3 Markus Malin FIN BONFIRE 85.17 $1,500

Today saw the second day of the Burton Australian Open go down at Perisher Blue Resort, where men’s and women’s halfpipe qualifications took place. Athletes from all over the world were vying for a coveted spot in Thursday’s semi-finals and a chance to grab a piece of the $50,000 AUD prize purse.

The men were first to drop into the pipe this morning under cloudy skies, where 14 men were boiled down to six. Sage Kotsenburg (USA) took the top spot in men’s halfpipe qualifications by putting down a solid run that started off with a frontside 900 melon into a backside 540 mute, followed by a frontside 720 indy, into a switch frontside 720 mute, finishing with a stylish melon to fakie. Aussies Scotty James, Samuel Murphy and Charlie Steinbacher, in addition to Chris Sörman (POL) and Marco Grilc (SLO) advance on and will be competing against invited riders Mason Aguirre (USA), Danny Davis (USA) and Kevin Pearce (USA), among others.

3 Marko Grilc SLO BURTON 80.17
4 Scott James AUS --- 74.50
5 Samuel Murphy AUS --- 73.67
6 Charlie Steinbacher AUS FORUM 55.67

The women’s field was dominated by Paulina Ligocka (POL) who stuck an extremely strong run, outscoring her nearest competitor by over 20 points. Ligocka, riding in her first competition after an injury set her back last year, proved that she is still a force to be reckoned with. Her second run, which scored her a massive 89.17 points, started off with lofty frontside air, followed by a method air, into a 540 tailgrab, followed by a backside indy, finishing with a 720.

Joining Ligocka will be two Aussies, Erin Tanner and Lauren Staveley who advance on to Thursday’s semis and will take on the likes of NZO halfpipe winner Jamie Anderson (USA) and Olympic gold medalist, Hannah Teter (USA).

“The men and women’s halfpipe qualifiers showed a glimmer of brilliance with the inspired riding of Sage Kotsenburg of the US and young Scott James of Australia leading the way,” said Competition Director, Greg Johnson. “Paulina Ligocka showed that she is back in a big way by locking in the top spot, truly an outstanding effort.”

Stylewars 2008 presented by Oakley.
August 24-28, 2008
Falls Creek Resort, Australia.

A perfect day with sunny blue skies today at Stylewars meant the first day of competition at Australia’s most notorious snowboarding event went down like a bowl full of delicious poutine. The 45 invited riders from around the globe were annihilating the course with a level of snowboarding never before seen in Australia.

Ripping all day and finishing in number 1 and 2 spots respectively was the French Canadian connection (ie: Canadian Club) of Charles Reid and Matts Kulisek who were both sending and stomping their runs all day. Matts was unleashing huge frontside 7 to backside 7 combinations amoung some super smooth 900s. While Charles Reid was dropping insane frontside 1080’s and massive 90-foot corked frontside 360’s that had everyone scratching their heads.

Sitting in third is a very consistent New Zealand rider Jacob Koia who looks poised to strike for the lead. NZ team captain Will Jackways had one of the most interesting lines of the day with a perfect 90 foot backside 900 melon followed by a method from the step-over kicker landing on the side of the landing 80-feet away, stomping a method perfectly amoungst the rubble and grooming debris.

The course is a 3 jump line that consists of a 15 foot flat cliff step-down, a 90 foot high speed step-down kicker and a 75 foot step up/over kicker.

Stylewars 2008 – the freestyle marathon continues tomorrow with sunny days again forecast and riders amping to step it up the rankings for a shot at the Grand Master Title.

Tonight the parties start, a free/private concert for the riders with Australian Producer KATALYST and MC RUCL ready to bring home the first day.

Falls Creek, Australia – August 19th, 2008: The 08/09 season of the Swatch TTR World Snowboard Tour is charging at full steam down under and the anticipation is rising for the first 4Star event on the Tour, theOakley Stylewars 2008. Taking place August 24th - 28th 2008 in Falls Creek, Australia, the 4-day lifestyle Slopestyle event, complete with intense snowboarding, parties and live music, is looking to be the highlight of the Southern Hemisphere.

With 500 Swatch TTR ranking points in the mix along with a $15 000 USD prize purse, Stylewars is sure to carry the competitive momentum set just recently at the 5Star Burton New Zealand Open and 3Star Billabong Snow Stock. Last season, Norwegian rider Torstein Horgmo blew apart the Falls Creek scene, and this year he’s back to claim it all again. But a hefty challenge Horgmo is sure to meet, as this year’s event is full to the brim with over 40 talented riders set to destroy the 3 – Kicker course.

Expect freestyle entrepreneur Travis Rice (USA) to make things spicy as current TTR World No. 2 Chas Guldemond (USA) attempts to get back the Tour Lead which was taken from him last week at the 3Star Billabong Snowstock by James Hamilton (NZE) Swatch TTR No. 4 Janne Korpi (FIN), TTR No. 13 Mikkel Bang (NOR), TTR No. 21 Sebastien Toutant (CAN), and TTR No. 40 Antti Autti (FIN) are sure to keep it interesting alongside a sick south-hemi contingent that includes the likes of TTR No. 26 Jake Koia (NZE) and Australian snowboarders Robbie Walker and Ryan Tiene.

Current leader of the Swatch TTR women’s ranking, Jamie Anderson (USA), will also take part in the men’s competition. Although there are no women’s points available at Stylewars simply due to the large scale of the competition features, she will show case her talent together with the guys. We are excited to see how the top female on the Tour will do.

Riders will be greeted with a relaxed, shred-friendly atmosphere, but even more exciting is the private, contest-purpose built Slopestyle course, already beefed up due to an excellent snow season thus far and set to exceed last year’s set up with increased quality and flow.

Also coming up soon on the Swatch TTR Tour is the 3Star Boost Mobile Sno Sho presented by Samsung, a one-night, under-the-lights, Big Air and Rail Showdown. Taking place August 29th to 30th at Perisher Blue, Australia, the event boasts a $30 000 USD prize purse and the longest rail seen in competition that is sure to spark some creative hits. Perisher Blue will also host the 5Star Burton Australian Open, starting off on September 1st.

For more information on the Swatch TTR 4Star Stylewars and the 3Star Sno Sho, along with inspiring videos, blogs, and ranking stats, head on over to www.ttrworldtour.com and keep yourself up to date.

Friday the 15th marked the beginning of the first annual Westbeach Chinese Downhill and an effort to reconnect with the spirit of shredding often lost in the myriad of publicly traded companies, profit margins and share-holder accountability that make up the current snowboarding landscape. Although all in the name of fun and beer drinking, a definite air of competitiveness was present amongst the 35 or so contestants vying for the title of fastest shred.

Notable attendees included, Shin Campos, Rube Goldberg, Kevin Sansalone, Jon Cartwright, Colin Adair, Ryan Tiene, Steph Just, Beau Bishop, Wiley Tesseo, Robjin Taylor and all the local shreds that made this event great. The rules were simple: first person to reach the Creekside Underground skatepark from the top of Million Dollar ridge and successfully finish a beer would win the affections of his peers and $500.

Weather? Dude it was epic...of course.

In the end it was a mix of veterans Kevin “Snacksie-pants” Sansalone and Shin “Getsu” Campos racing spring-chickens John Caulfield and Anthony Weglan to the finish line. Their shred skills had brought them to the bottom in a possible record time of 4 minutes 53 seconds but the contest was ultimately decided by the beer chugging skills of Shin. Who says professional snowboarding doesn’t teach valuable life skills?

Perhaps the best part, and the intended effect, was the sense of camaraderie felt by everyone there. It was a great reason for people who are often segregated by work and busy winter schedules to come together and snowboard for the sake of snowboarding. Thanks Westbeach, see you next year.

Girls from near and far showed up to the 2 BUCK CHUCK All Girl Park Clinic and Slopestyle Contest presented by MGT Snowboard Camp, Burton and Grouse Mtn. This is the 5th annual contest series spearheaded by MGT and had 60 female riders pushing their skills over the January 5-6 weekend  in spite of the face wash Mother Nature gave them.

The park clinic portion of the 2 BUCK CHUCK program kicked off on Saturday with pow turns, fierce fog and freezing rain but the Grouse staff were quick to dust off take offs and keep the soft landings for mellow consequences and progression. Campers were sponging every trick in the book from the MGT coaches Leanne Pelosi, Molly Milligan, Robin Van Gyn, Amanda Mourant, and Joanna Majcherkiewicz. The sponging was so good that the MGT coaches were being given a run for their money towards the end of the day. Minus the facial sting from the freezing rain, everyone went  home with new tricks and new stoke for the 2 BUCK CHUCK slopestyle the next day.

Sunday’s slopestyle began with thick North Vancouver  fog and a thick blanket of snow. But even thicker was the unbreakable vibe of the event created  by entourage. Among the swarm were MC’s Damon Pyatt and Dixon from the Boardroom, the crew at Rip.tv and MGT coaches and riders Marie France Roy and Bev Vuilleumier. The competitors that came from everywhere  to get a piece of the MGT pie had a large crowd to watch them get trickatronic. There were cupcakes, Red Bull, bumpin’ tracks, dance parties, and a whole lot of snow. The open jam kicked off with sick tricks like backlips and 180’s on being thrown down right off the bat. 14-year-old Brooke Voight stepped it up with a sick switch front board on the down rail and opened up the tech can of worms.

After a 2 hour jam, the MGT judges went  into the cupcake bunker and made some hard decisions. MGT vet and last years winner, Raewyn Reid of Calgary landed in 3rd place by hammering out some switch-up’s on the flat down,  back 180’s on the down bar. Raekwon, as she’s often referred to, took home $250 and a branded 2 BUCK CHUCK hammer. Not far ahead was Claudia Avon of Quebec in 2nd place who threw down consistently throughout the contest and landed a clean 270 onto the down bar. Claudia won $500, a 2 BUCK CHUCK branded hammer and a spot at the Billabong Flaunt It Slopestyle in Quebec in March. But it was Breanna Stangeland of Calgary/Whistler who stood out with spins on almost every feature, barley’s and 180’s on and off the down bar, and a backlip pretzel out which put Breanna in 1st and also won her best trick! Breanna took home $1150 cash, a giant 2 BUCK CHUCK branded axe and a spot to compete with the crème de la crème of the shred pie at the Burton Abominable Snow Jam in Mt.Hood this summer.

In spite of the weather, the 2 BUCK CHUCK logger jam blasted through and wrapped a 5th solid event that continues to increase female participation in contests and fosters progression. MGT sends out a huge Thank You to all the supporters, coaches, campers, Grouse Mountain terrain park staff and Jeff Silcock, Damon from Coastal Riders, Dixon from Boardroom, Leah from Rip.tv, Birnie at Dragon, crew at Burton, 32, Etnies Girl, K2, Billabong and the Canadian Snowboard Federation.

Back in Chile for the Burton’s summer photoshoot

Victoria Jealouse, Natasza Zureck and I  are going to Lonquimay which is about 10 hours drive from Santiago.. I love to come down here for the Burton summer photoshoot cause we team up with 2Tiempos, a sled company pull together by Christian Vahrhan.. this guys guys are dope! Los Andes are huge  and deep mountains with Volcanos and the sleds make them easily accessible.. they  avoid extra hiking too.. J

The Orange Truck came to pick us up at Santiago’s airport for a long drive.. we decided to stop at the ocean in Pichilemu on the way after we heard that the waves were huge that day! And they were! Man I had never seen such big waves and by the time we got there, they were much smaller they said! The morning of the same day some Chilean surfers had droped into 12 meters high waves.. one of the surfers even just paddled into it! C R A Z Y !
Last year one of them had won the Billabong XL Award on one of these waves..
I m glad we got to see that! Cause traveling like mad I often don’t get the opportunity to see anything else then mountains..

We got here in Lonquimay which is a very remote place, in poor snow conditions.. the worse snow conditions I had ever seen actually! After a day of scoping and a day of studio shoot we went to the Market waiting for the rain to stop.. that was cool! I got cool bellaclavas for the cold times.. like sledding days or bike missions or anything like that..
Victoria and I were on a mission.. we love south American markets and any cultural shopping days! And we got tons of really cool sick dope earings!

Victoria always has crazy stories to tell.. and this time she came prepared with tons of dvds and printed sheets etc.. she is rad! Finally the weather cleared up for the last day.. all excited and curious on what we would find we first got stuck about in the mud.. but the guys thought they had big muscles and could push us through that crazy f*cked up dirt road..
Only an hour later they admitted we wouldn’t make it.. so we got on the sleds.. crossing the road bank from one side to the other.. trying to find a way through the bush the river the houses and the dirt.. most of the snow had melted and the way was hard to find..

We finally made it to the top of the mountain from where we could see a huge lava river from a volcano that exploded in 88 I think..  C R A Z Y !
we were right next to the crater that exploded.. so I decided to hike and to check what was in there.. it took me quite wild to get to the top.. all rocks were falling under my feet and the heat coming out of the ground didn’t make me feel any more comfortable.. scared that I was gonna blow up the next second.. the crater was cool! The were caves sucked in the snow to deeper level of the earth.. with smoke coming out from time to time..
I felt blessed being up there! First and probably last time I was gonna be on top of a volcano! Then I straped in my Gtwin and rode the dirty black sticky snow down the volcano..
S T O K E D !

That’s it for 2007 Chile. Hopefully we ll get better conditions next year!
