Westbeach unveils the Emperor’s New Collection

VANCOUVER, BC, April 1, 2008 – Today, Westbeach, the Canadian Snowboarding Original,

presents the Emperor’s New Collection, a limited edition late-season line injection boasting

sensational performance and ballsy design.

“The first time people witness the Emperor’s New Collection, they’re shocked by the beauty

and power of the design—sometimes even speechless,” says Jon Cartwright, Westbeach’s

GM. “This is gear fit for a king.”

Created by world-renowned designer H. C. Andersen using ultra lightweight materials, the

Emperor’s New Collection allows maximal movement and features the industry’s best

breathability rating. Though not intended for extreme conditions, each piece incorporates

strategically placed insulation in areas prone to hypothermia or frostbite.

Extensive prototype testing concludes that consumers will find the Emperor’s New Collection

liberating to wear. “The fabric is so light, it’s as if you’re not wearing anything at all,” says

Westbeach team rider Matt Belzile.

Industry leaders have already voiced their appreciation for Andersen’s grassroots approach,

which embraces minimal design elements without foregoing serious wow factor. “The lay factor

is asstronomical,” according to team rider Dick Flapper. “This Collection brings women to their

knees. And it keeps men honest.”

In addition to terrific performance and styling, the Emperor’s New Collection requires little care.

Washing is seldom required. On those odd occasions when you get really dirty, Westbeach

recommends handwashing garments from the Collection in warm water, as using cold may

result in shrinkage.

See attached picture for details.

Talk about a manly activity! Driving out deep in the valley and
meeting up with some dudes with some big guns. Since we were still on
our board testing trip we decided they would be our target. I have
never shot a gun and Logan has shot a shotgun back in his hick town.
I was so psyched after shooting the hand gun... I felt so powerful and
strong. It was almost like therapy to shoot those bad boys. Eric, our
supervisor, gave us a shotgun and that thing had some gnarly kick
on it when shooting the slugs. He told us to place it in our 'Gun
notch' which is in between your collar bone and shoulder. The kick
back is not as bad when you put the butt end in your little notch. All
in all we f-ed the boards up pretty bad and got to blast some sweet
guns. I recommend shooting some guns next time you're trying to release a bit of stress. Logan and I are going to go hunt for moose on our next day off.

ADD US TO YOUR FRIEND LIST FOR THE LATEST ON YWE!

I'd like to send a shout out to the awesome gun enthusiasts over at
www.silvercore.ca for letting us shoot their guns.

My Journal: End of an Era
By: elsnowboardo

Frankly I think after I post up my huge annual review I'll be moving on to work further in the industry and calling it quits with giving people board advice.  I've done it steadily for 4 years on here with minor thanks, its lead to me to tradeshows, magazines, design jobs, proto type testing, countless friends in the industry, but I'm just spent on answering the same stuff over and over.  I'd rather put my energy into other things like my new admiration in big mountain competitions.

My Blog: hmm
By: Twirch

So I had this thing going through college, that if I started saying stuff, eventually people would think its cool and start doing it...and guess what?! it worked...(i feel so...un-lamish!...)

(I may have somehow accidently copied these sayings/words though, and in no means am trying to take credit for it...but just some everyday vocabulary that I'd use, that all of a sudden the people i'd hang out with start using...)

It began with a simple BaHA!  ...well..that was it really except when i said i'd start testing it...i got people around school to start saying "My mom said it's/i'm cool!"

I wonder if I can get people to use this expression? It was done like cooking fish, the floating was very pronounced!!! (I used to work in a kitchen...when the fish was done, i'd float!)

Oh and I believe that penguins will one day rule the world...(cuz other than beign cute and funny, what else will they do with their time?!)

And I shouldn't be allowed to blog!

(Monday December 17th 2007) After much speculation and an industry-wide rumour mill, StepChild Snowboards is proud to announce the signing of JP Walker to the International Pro Team.

"JP's riding and dedication to snowboarding speaks for itself- not many snowboarders have remained at the top of their class for over ten years. We are absolutely thrilled to have him on the team. It's cool that we share the same values and beliefs as to what a snowboard company and team should be." - StepChild founder Sean Johnson.

" Where else would I end up? Come on, you know I keep it one-hunney! StepChild is one of the last true snowboard companies out there. I love that they value what a professional rider brings to the table. Rider owned and driven, others claim it but none live it, son!" - JP Walker.

There's no denying JP has had a huge impact on the sport of snowboarding over the past decade. Anyone who knows anything about snowboarding is familiar with JP's video parts. Over the years he set a new standard filming with MDP and for some of the biggest selling team videos of all time; he invented tricks and numerous first-ever-bangers caught on film. JP's riding and style has stayed relevant even in an era marked by the X-Games, reality shows, corporate takeovers and riders with fistfuls of energy drinks. No one has been able to continually raise the bar, and maintain a high level of integrity, style, innovation and technical tricks like JP has. Even after a season unexpectedly cut short, JP managed to have a solid presence in videos and magazines, including his Future cover, surprisingly JP's first North American cover shot of his career.

Walker's snowboarding career is the result of immense talent, hard work and dedication -attributes he will continue to bring to the game in the future. His priority is the progression of snowboarding, but it's also about the way he and his sport are portrayed to the public. Driven by the same ideals StepChild and JP are the perfect combination.

"Obviously StepChild is focused on snowboard videos and progression, two things that I've always been an advocate of. They have an amazing team of handrail slayers, and i'm stoked to be a part of it, been riding their boards on the down low this past week and i'm stoked. It's simply the best fit. One." - JP Walker.

Simon Chamberlain adds, "Growing up watching snowboard videos, JP Walker has always been my favourite snowboarder of all time. It truly is amazing to see him riding for Stepchild. Its like a dream come true, not only for me but for the whole company."

JP will have a Pro Model with StepChild in three sizes: 147, 151, and 154. The boards will be sold with a regular edge as well as a RETT (Round Edge Taper Tuning) option. The board has a dull round edge between the feet for jibbing, and tapers out to a regular edge by the time it reaches the contact points. "The boards are tuned at the factory exactly how I would tune them at home." adds JP.

JP is currently filming with Mack Dawg Productions for Double Decade, which will be released in August 2008. His current sponsor list includes: StepChild Snowboards, 32 and Etnies, Oakley, Nixon, Bear Mountain, Milosport and Molcasalsa. StepChild's International Pro Team now consists of JP Walker, Simon Chamberlain, Markku Koski, Stian Solberg and Fredu Sirvio. The International Am Team consists of Joe Sexton, Risto Ruokola, and Scotty Vine. Other notable supporters include Chris Wimbles, Brian McClatchy and E-Man amongst others.

About StepChild: StepChild is a snowboard company that specializes in camping stoves, fishing tackle, and tennis rackets. The StepChild team is currently training and testing sand boards in Egypt. Joe Sexton and Simon Chamberlain are currently pushing the envelope of progressive sandboarding in the Egyptian Parallel Slalom while Markku and Stian aren't having much luck in the Sandboard half pipe event. "The stupid camel just won't pull us to the top! He's going to need an energy drink sponsor" adds Markku.

Alright, so the time is currently 5:28am (damn!).  Who knows why I'm up writing out a blog this late.  But I can't bring myself to sleep tonight so, I figure I'll write up a storm here and give blogging another round.

First off, Mother Nature has surely blown me away this year.  Who knew the old lady still had enough juices flowing to bring some snow early this late November/early December.  But I'm not complaining, I say my thanks and appreciation to Mother Nature for bringing some white gold into the city (thanks Mother Nature!), finally.

I'm getting waaaaay too antsy for my own good, reason being the local mountains are opened, and I'm still hanging around doing school and in final exam mode (though procrastination is getting in the way).  Two more weeks left, and as these days fly by, it gets me more and more excited to think how I'll be able to get some riding in for the season.

Lookin' forward to hitting up my favourite mountain, MLSM.  I've set my goals this year to a new degree.  I'm planning on hitting the Junkyard for the FIRST TIME, and seeing how far I can push my game.  as soon as I get the board waxed, find out my work schedule for the season (temp job at a retail store=uncool), I'm off and coasting the slopes, carving my lines, and testing my abilities in the Junkyard (I'll hopefully have some fresh photogs this season).

Ok, enough about snowboarding for now.  This year has been a fantastic year.  Mind you, beginning of 2007 was a bit sketchy at first (will save that story for another time), but as the year progressed, it's gotten better and better.  I'm more involved with my university (Was a Frosh organizer this year; taking on a more initiative role with my student group- Adventure Society!), meeting new peeps and learning to build friendships even (still at a slow pace, but I'm workin' on it).
I can finally say without hesitation, I'm beginning to love my life right now.  I'm enjoying the time I have here, going out with friends, partying, doin' what university kiddies do best.  Its a huge change from how I was back in highschool.

Damn, its now 7:35am (no, it didn't take me 2 hours to write this, just finally got a little shut eye, kind of), so its time to go and hit up the campus and run with the student body.

So until next time, check ya laters.

Stay gold Peeps,
B.O.d.P.

Surfing Day
Current mood: sore

As of Saturday the 28th of April I got up around 7am in the morning to pack for the first surfing day of the season. I was hoping today that there will be a bunch of surfers and good weather. Otherwise I brought two surfboards(one longboard and short board) depending on size of waves. It was pretty chilly morning with no sunrise in sight and I drove off around 7:30 to Florence. Got there around 9. One hour and half drive dude!! Yeah I have a ghetto Honda so no speeding tickets. I got there to South Jetty and was surprised that I was first to show up. Took a look around testing the wind and air temperature. Gotta love the ocean breeze and air. I stripped down all of my clothes except my top layers. Took on my rental wetsuit from Boardsports. Grabbed my longboard and took a short walk down to the water and tested how cold it was. 50-55 degrees I predicted. Same as air temp. Brrr. Took a pause to find the spot to paddle in. Beforehand I have to wet my face to get used to it then head deeper as waves hits me repeatedly. I figured out that the waves weren't flowing as well but against another which makes is harder for surfers to settle with the board. It looked rough and treacherous with too many waves at once I guessed. I grabbed a few for good to get in shape for the season. My body did not panic with water elements which is good becuase I spent a lot of time riding in the winter up in snow. Second surfer who is from Washington came. Then surfed till lunch and headed home. Newport's most popular surf spot Otter Rock could be my next stop to surf next wkend or so. We'll see.

Hey, it’s Tadashi. I’m in Methven, New Zealand for BURTON a shoot.
As I expected it is so cold… I was in summer heat yesterday, you know!
Today, I didn’t go snowboarding but instead went skateboarding for some fun.

This picture was taken when I had a BBQ with Manabu.
That was so nice to have a BBQ at the beach. Hearing the lapping of the waves was really good and I felt comforted...

祝!! Congratulations!!

On August 4th, Yuho and Dave had their wedding ceremony!!!

Yuho is our manager and she was working with us editing our film until 2days before her wedding.
Yuho, sorry for making you work up to the last minute!

The weather forecast said it was going to be a rainy day, but during the ceremony everyone was blessed with fine weather. It was a really nice ceremony.

↓写真は左からナターシャ、デイブ、ユーホ。

飼っているラブラドールのミキとルカ(見切れてるけど…笑)もお祝いしてくれました。

Yuho’s baby dogs Miki and Luca celebrated with them too.

↓Yuho

Dave & Yuho本当におめでとう!

The wedding cake was handmade by Yuho’s friend.
Two snowboarders were on the top of it.

We had sooooo much fun at the party at night!!
Everybody danced like crazy with DJ Ryan.
It was not like any Japanese wedding...Canadian weddings are kind of casual and freestyle. The people who came in later to the party were like they just came from work.

I like the way they party in Canada.

Dave&Yuho, we are all really happy for you two!!! Congratulations!

Hello! This is Keiji.
The editors(Taro, Nobu and me) came back to Japan today.
It’s hotter than we could imagine… I thought I would melt!

We were so busy on the last day in Canada packing, cleaning up and keeping our sleds in appropriate places etc…
But we could have a last drink with our room mates and that was so great.

We got in Canada on December and spent a whole six month filming and two month for editing. Now finally we have reached the stage that we can show you the video...
On August 19, we will have the first preview party at the Applestore in Ginza, Tokyo!
Let’s kick it!!!

帰国した次の日に東京湾花火大会がありました!

家の屋上から少しだけ花火みれたんですよ。

ほとんどの花火がビルの影でみれなかったけどきれいでしたね。

The day after we came back, there was a fireworks exhibition at Tokyo Bay.
Most of the fireworks were hidden by buildings but the ones I saw from my roof were so beautiful!!

These are the best shots of the fireworks.

夏は夏でいいですね!

This is what makes summer so nice!

次の日は地元、富岡八幡寓の祭りがやってました。

水をかけられながら町中を練り歩きます。

来年が三年に一度の本祭り。江戸三大祭の一つで、神輿が54基もでちゃうんです。

The next day the festival of the Tomioka-Hachimangu was held in my hometown.

People were carrying Mikoshi (a portable shrine) and were walking around town, and people along the road were carrying water with hoses and buckets. (aka; Watering Festival)

Next year’s festival will be the big one that is held every three years.
Tomioka-Hachiman- Festival is one of the three big festivals of Edo (Tokyo), and there will be 54 Mikoshis in the street next year.

I’m going to Tadashi’s hometown tomorrow with Nobu to go see the community festival there.

The festival is held annually and this year’s highlight is the snowboarding that will be held there. People will make man made snow and everybody will snowboard in the middle of summer!

I can’t wait to see it!

I’ll post it for you too!

Every Olympics has it's drug scandals.  Last time it was that french downhill skiier, remember that?  Are you on Elephant growth hormones?  Some sort of animal tranquilizer?  And they didn't even bother drug testing the snowboarders, they just said "go on, get the f*ck out, go go my little boys.  Have fun."  I guess the realized the word half pipe meant something.  Like the one kid who won the gold and they're like, "Congratultions, want to be one a box of Wheates?"  And he was like..."No, Count Chocula" Aha! A clue, sherlock!  Unlike that Canadian snowboarder back in 1998, they took away his medal because he tested positive for marijuana, and that's a little redundant number one,  Number two, they said that marijuana was a performance enhancing drug.  EH!  The only way marijuana is a performance enhancing drug is if there's a big f*cking chocolate bar at the end of the run.  Poor Canadian snowboarder, they asked for his medal back and he couldn't find it.  It was around his f*cking neck!  And then they have weird sports like the biathalon, what the hell is that?  It's like a norwegian drive by!

My Journal: Brickyard Baybee
By: Jesgirl

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway was built on 328 acres of farmland five miles northwest of Indiana's capital city in the spring of 1909. Financed by four local businessmen, Carl Fisher, James Allison, Frank Wheeler and Arthur Newby, it was planned as a year-round testing facility for the fast-growing automobile industry in Indiana. Occasional race meets would be presented at the track, featuring those very same manufacturers racing their products against each other. Spectators, it was reasoned, would be sufficiently impressed as to want to head downtown quickly to the showrooms for a closer look at one of these new-fangled contraptions.

Four turns, each banked at nine degrees and 12 minutes and measuring exactly 440 yards from entrance to exit, were linked together by a pair of long straights and, at the north and south ends of the property, by a pair of short straights to form a rectangular-shaped 2 ½ mile track as dictated by the confines of the available land.

With the original surface of crushed rock and tar proving to be disastrous at the opening motorcycle and automobile racing events in August of 1909, 3,200,000 paving bricks were imported by rail from the western part of the state in the fall, laid on their sides in a bed of sand and fixed with mortar, this inspiring the nickname "The Brickyard".

Poor attendance at a trio of three-day meets on the revamped surface in 1910 caused the owners to rethink their plans and focus instead on a single event for 1911. They envisioned it as an event of gigantic proportions offering a huge purse. On May 30 - Memorial Day - a grueling 500-Mile race paying $14,250 to win took place, enjoying instant success and attracting universal recognition…and making history as the inaugural Indianapolis 500.

With the exception of an additional program of racing on a single day in September 1916, no race other than the Indianapolis 500 was to be held at the Speedway until a tremendously successful NASCAR stock car event, the Brickyard 400, debuted in 1994. The 500 was suspended during America's involvement in the two world wars, 1917-1918 and 1942-1945, but held in all other years.

Asphalt was first applied to the rougher portions of the track in 1936, and by 1941 all but the greater part of the mainstraight had become blacktop. The remainder of the bricks were finally covered over in the fall of 1961. Most of the original paving bricks are still in place underneath the modern asphalt surface, with only the famous "yard of bricks" still exposed at the start/finish line as a nostalgic reminder of the past.

The track has changed ownership only twice. With Carl Fisher heavily involved in the development of Miami Beach and Jim Allison's nearby engineering company growing rapidly, the foursome sold IMS in 1927 to a group headed up by WWI flying ace Eddie Rickenbacker. Rickenbacker had actually driven in several 500s before he ever knew how to fly. One of Rickenbacker's first actions was to install an 18-hole golf course on the grounds in 1929, now known as Brickyard Crossing and home of a Senior PGA Tour golf tournament, the Brickyard Crossing Championship, in September.

Allowed to fall into a terrible state of disrepair as a result of four years of neglect during WWII, the Speedway was purchased in 1945 by Terre Haute, Indiana, businessman Anton "Tony" Hulman, Jr. He immediately embarked on a phenomenal rejuvenation program that began the transformation of the facility into what it is today. Hulman passed away in October 1977, but to this day members of his family perpetuate the traditions of the Speedway - now encompassing 559 acres - while continuing to transform it beyond the wildest imaginations of its founders.

The Hulman-George family continues to own and operate the Indianapolis Motor Speedway with Mari Hulman George serving as Chairman of the Board and Anton "Tony" George serving as President and Chief Executive Officer.

YEA!!! 44% of you that voted (total votes:16) said that You HAVE ALREADY CHANGED TO COMPACT FLOURESCENT LIGHTBULBS!!!  Hey ...I'm stoked...it's a great start!  This means that 7 people understand that switching out their Incandescent lightbulbs to Compact Flourescent bulbs:

  • Use at least 2/3 less energy than standard incandescent bulbs to provide the same amount of light, and last up to 10 times longer.
  • Save $30 or more in energy costs over each bulb’s lifetime
  • Generate 70 percent less heat, so they’re safer to operate and can cut energy costs associated with home cooling.
  • In addition to other quality requirements, must turn on instantly, produce no sound, and fall within a warm color range or be otherwise labeled as providing cooler color tones.
  • Are available in different sizes and shapes to fit in almost any fixture, for indoors and outdoors.
Information sourced from ENERGY STAR :

BUT WAIT......I was shocked to see that 25% of you did not know WHAT COMPACT FLOURESCENT BULBS are.  So here's the downlow on this Highly efficient and Green-'leaning' energy source.:
CFL stands for compact fluorescent lamp, and it is a small fluorescent light bulb that uses at least 2/3 less energy than a traditional incandescent bulb and can be screwed into a regular light socket. Don’t let the fact that it is fluorescent turn you off! ENERGY STAR qualified CFLs must pass extensive testing to ensure they produce only the highest quality light. Qualified bulbs labeled “warm white” or “soft white” produce light like typical incandescent light bulbs. CFLs that have a cooler color (similar to bright white incandescent bulbs) are usually labeled “bright white” or “daylight” on the product packaging.
So change out a bulb....It's easy they can be found mostly anywhere from your LOCAL HARDWARE Store and perhaps even a drug store ...if you can't find them at your local ma and pop shop tell them to bring them into their inventory

If you must go elsewhere...try Home Depot, Target, or even Walmart...(yeah..they're even carrying organics now!)

THERE....don't you feel good to know that taking ECO- action can be as simple as CHANGING A LIGHTBULB!

CHEERS!,

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE KIDS WHO WERE BORN IN THE

1920's, 30's 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's !!

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they carried us and lived in houses made of asbestos.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes or cervical cancer.

Then after that trauma, our baby cribs were covered with bright colored lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets or shoes, not to mention, the risks some of us took hitchhiking.

As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.

Riding in the back of a pickup truck on a warm day was always a special treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle.

Take away food was limited to fish and chips, no pizza shops, McDonalds, KFC, Subway or Red Rooster.

Even though all the shops closed at 6.00pm and didn't open on the weekends, somehow we didn't starve to death!

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.

We could collect old drink bottles and cash them in at the corner store and buy Fruit Tingles and some fire crackers to blow up frogs and lizards with.

We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank soft drinks with sugar in it, but we weren't overweight because......

WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. We built tree houses and cubby houses and played in creek beds with matchbox cars.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, Xboxes, no video games at all, no 99 channels on cable, no video tape or DVD movies, no surround sound, no mobile  phones, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat rooms..........WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no Lawsuits from these accidents.

Only girls had pierced ears!

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.

You could only buy Easter Eggs and Hot Cross buns at Easter time.......no really!

We were given BB guns and sling shots for our 10th birthdays,

We drank milk laced with Strontium 90 from cows that had eaten grass covered in nuclear fallout from the atomic testing at Maralinga in 1956.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just yelled for them!

Mum didn't have to go to work to help dad make ends meet!

Footy had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!

Our teachers used to belt us with big sticks and leather straps and bully's always ruled the playground at school.

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

Our parents got married before they had children and didn't invent stupid names for their kids like "Kiora" and "Blade".....

This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever!

The past 70 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned

HOW TO

DEAL WITH IT ALL!

And YOU are one of them!

CONGRATULATIONS!

Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it?!

PS -The big type is because your eyes are shot at your age
