so, the season has ended.  it went out all weird like too.  had been sunny and perfect for so long and then the last week it got cold, rained and the wind blew like god was pissed at us.  so we couldn't ride for the last 5 days of the season.  sucks too, cuz elle and i were amped to film on the big flat down 15 meter (45+ feet) rail as well as some of the other shi*t that we had scope out.  its always weird when you expect to ride again and then you don't.  we usually know when its our last day and we get our brains wrapped around it, but not this season.  oh well, park city opens in exactly 6 weeks.  guess i'll just spend this time editing vid for the new film.  holla!

My Journal: THE SEASON
By: Shapiro

For all you people who ask me the same questions every god dam year

"What are your plans for the season?"  Aaron says : I plan on snowboarding ! what do you think I plan on doing ?

"Who are you riding for?" the best of the best ..... Atomic, Section, Ogio, Technine, Thirtytwo, Dragon, Etnies

"How did you get into the Vegas Contest?" I went down the year before in all my snowboard gear begging to get in and didn't. Also I was second place then first place two years in a row in a world event/contest! (Pay your dues is how)

"Who can I contact for the Vegas High roller jam?" I don't know they change a lot ..they will contact you.

"How much do you get paid?" None of your business

(for when it snows in vancouver) "Aaron where's a good hand rail? lets hit it?" Is your name Gonzo ?? Do you shoot photos like Gonzo? What? No? oh, ok bye

After researching, asking lots of questions and figuring out if I wanted freeride or freestyle bindings; I decided to sell my Tomcats on eBay and got a set of T9 MFM Pro's for practically the same price. I heard so many great things about these bindings that I can't wait to try them out. Now we just need some snow...

Photo_031506_002.jpg

In the upgrade, I seem to have lost my previous blog type entries... ah well, time to start fresh I guess.

Natural snow finally hit southern California.  Too bad it took until March for it to happen!  But none-the-less, two feet of fresh snow is nothing to complain about, no matter how long it takes to arrive.

So, I finally went to the mountain on Wednesday, 3/15/06.  I have lots of excuses for not going sooner, but they're all lame and I'll spare you.  Took a couple more experienced buddies with me and we made it a good day.

Got up there pretty early... I think we arrived on the mountain at about 9am.  Weather was warmish, so I just took my shell and left all the other layers in the car.  First thing I had to do was pick up my season pass while my friends got their lift tickets.  It took an extraordinary amount of time, considering there was only one other person ahead of me.  In the end, it was worth it, because I managed to come out with an 06/07 pass instead of the 05/06 one I had originally paid for in April of '05!

So, passes gotten, time to hit the snow.  Usually, when I go boarding with the wife, we start on the Green slopes and slowly work our way up.  This is fine, since she's not as agressive as I am in her riding, and it gives me a chance to practice riding switch-stance.  Not this time!  My friends, being more experienced, went straight for the black diamond run!  Not to worry though... You have to take a blue run to get to it.  And besides, I was so pumped on being on the snow finally that I was happy to start with a little more challenge.  Also, the Black runs at Big Bear are only like Blue runs in Tahoe, so it's not too bad anyway.

I forgot to mention that I got a new set of bindings.  I got some Technine Marc Frank Montoya Pro bindings at a good price a couple weeks ago and spent an entire evening getting them setup on my board at home.  I learned a few things about how to tune bindings that night, and made some major changes to my previous binding setup.  One of the changes was setting up the high-back with more lean-in.  My first bindings had them set at nil, so i thought I'd go halfway on the setting for the new ones.  According to the little manual, it's supposed to help heel-toe/toe-heel transitions.

On the way up the hill on the lift, my calves started to hurt.  At first I thought it was just the pain of the board hanging on one foot while on the chair.  Once I strapped in and started down the hill though, the pain just got worse and worse, and by the end of the run it was killing me.  Somewhere a long the way, I remembered having set the high-backs in, so at the next lift, I put them back to nil.  And what do you know... the pain went away!

On the second run I noticed how much of a difference the high-back setting had made on my transitions.  On the first run, I didn't have any trouble making my turns (aside from the pain).  On the second run, and all the runs afterward, I always felt a just a little bit sketchy going from toe-side to heel-side.  I didn't feel like fiddling with my bindings anymore, so I just left them at nil and worked on building my confidence with better technique instead.

The snow quality was pretty good.  It had snowed heavily on Friday and Saturday, and we were there on Wednesday.  It had packed down and frozen a bit, so it was a little hard, but softened up nicely as the day progressed.  I did manange to get a few scratches in the wax on my board though, as well as a really bad one from a rock that I thought was a glove or something equally soft.  No permanent damage though.

We stopped early for a brief lunch to miss the crowd in the Base Food area and were back on the snow by noon.  There were a surprising number of late-comers, as suddenly, there was a line for the lift.  We made several more runs on the less crowded mid-mountain lifts and called it a day at 2pm.  It was a good move, as we hit little traffic on the way home and made it back into San Diego by 5pm.

All in all, an excellent day, and I can't wait for next weekend when another storm is supposed to drop more snow!

-Geronimo: 1119 x 4
-Accelerator: 525 x 2
-Amusement Park: 519 x 2
-Showtime-Silver Connection: 791 x 2

My Journal: Snow Season 05/06
By: jblaski

I ride alone alot, which gives me a lot of time to think. For the last couple days, I've been thinking about what I see missing in snowboarding. The pure and simple joy of riding. I think back to last season and teaching my younger brother how to snowboard. There were a so many things that brought a smile to his face that each and every one of us takes for granted.
  • The first time walking out on a real ski hill, not just our backyard. He smiled.
  • The first time he made it to the top of the rope tow without falling. He smiled.
  • The first time he linked together a few turns before falling. He turned back to me, was smiling and said "Jake did you see that? I turned both ways"
  • The first blue run he make, top to bottom without falling. He completely forgot of the other 30 times that he'd fallen that day, and he was smiling.
  • The first time he got a little air of a roller on the trail. He turned back to me and asked "Jake, did I get off the ground that time?" When I said yes, he smiled.
It wasn't that long ago that you were just trying to stay up the entire tow rope. How about the next time you're out boarding, just smile because you're there.

Year-to-date snowboarding: 50eight days!
New season total personel best!

I'd just like to thank my sponsors:
