Events/News - Whistler Blackcomb: How is it April already?
By: whistlerblackcomb

How is it April already?! It seems like just yesterday we were getting daily powder dumps and I was riding untouched trees… But wait, that wasn’t very long ago! That’s what spring riding is all about here on these West Coast mountains. So always remember “If it’s raining in the village, it’s snowing in the alpine!”

This week I took it easy, hitting up groomers all over Blackcomb. The snow is super fun but only after a hot wax! The warmer temperatures have definitely changed the snow conditions, making it softer and slushy near the bottom. I rode mainly the Crystal zone, everything was groomed and the sun was out! We then spent most of the weekend soaking in the rays from Merlin’s patio; it’s all about the après!

Spring has hit us full force; Sunny blue bird days followed by cloudy stormy days and you can’t walk through the village without seeing goggle tans all over. The TELUS World Ski & Snowboard festival is only 7 days away and the parks are groomed to perfection, so what you waiting for?! Throw some wax on those shred sticks, some zinc on those cheeks and come on up for a visit!

Keep on Shredding

-Alex

The snow keeps falling here in Whistler. We now have had 29 feet of snow that has fallen so far this year and over 3 months left of the ski season. We are offering training all the way until the end of April for our groups and custom training into May. We are busy planning our 'World Trips' and the NZ Trip for September is up on the web site if you would like to come.

Over the past month we have had loads going on.

We successfully completed our second road trip for the season down to Mt Baker with our 12 week campers and were met with fantastic conditions. It was quite the adventure as I found out that my wife Karen was going into labour just as we were putting in our first powder runs of the day at Mt Baker. The day was a real blast for me. We shredded powder all morning with sunny skies and then rallied back to Vancouver to make it just in time for Baylee to be born - you really can't beat that for a day to remember. Check out www.pro-ride.com/diary.cfm for the pictures of the day.

Instructor Results

We have had excellent results from our Level 2 crew who did their exams and a couple of them who wanted to work have already been hooked up with employment with Whistler Blackcomb for the remainder of the season. A good friend of ours who does the hiring for the school came by the camp house and chatted with the crew about how to gain employment with the mountain and at the end of his session offered work to the people who were interested.

Jump Day

We have a backcountry style jump day planned for Friday which should be a blast. We have snow forecasted all the way to Friday which is going to make for super soft landings. As a bonus, Cooler - European Women's Life Style Magazine will be on hand to document the activities. Jump day just happens to correspond with one of the campers birthdays so it is going to be quite an affair.

Competition News

Lots of great results this month from the crew. Ryan Rausch has been travelling the globe and is dominating as usual. Crispin Lipscomb was in Italy for the World Cup Half Pipe and took the win for Canada. This is only a week after winning the Showcase Showdown. The boy is on fire!

Next Years Programs

All of next years pricing and dates are up on the web site so now is a great time to secure your place for the long term programs. This Seasons Programs

We now have a few places remaining for 1,2 and 4 weeks starting from March 22nd and 29th if you are keen to come out and ride. (Our group training sessions will run all the way until the end of April.) The conditions are excellent and we have loads of snow to get us through to the summer. The World Ski and Snowboard Festival is on again April 11 - 20 so this is a great time to come out. My Blog: BROKEN
By: freakazoid

Ahoy ahoy, whats up ya'll, yes I am bored, i've been in a cast for that last two weeks, missing most of the spring riding, you know what that does to a guy, yep yep, my foot's broken at two places, check out the pic for laughs :D

That's all! (God am i bored!)

PS. I'd also have X-Rays but i was too lazy to go back to the hospital, I think i'm allergic to hospitals =\ :P

So it's mid-April and the season is rapidly coming to a close. A couple more weeks of spring riding at home, maybe a trip down to Whistler in May for the end of the season there, and then it's another summer of camping, hiking, and healing for next season.

I ended up only getting around 50 days on the snow this year, too much time spent out of state for various reasons. Met a lot of new people, pushed myself a lot further than I thought I'd go on the board, and in general just had a great damn time out there.

The sad part is, however, that I'm writing this from Quantico, Virginia where they've sent me for a week of training.. so not only is the season dying it's slow.. sad death.. but I have to miss a week of this last hurrah. Spring riding is the time when the people who love the sport.. for the love.. get out there. The time when everyone you meet on the slope is as stoked as you are to just be out there. Stoke man, it's all about the stoke.

So here's looking forward to next season, hoping that it ends as good as this year started, that we get the 1200" we should have got this season and that I can have as much fun with my friends, old and new, as I did this season. Next year will be my last in AK, then I'll be in a city in California... 4 hours from the nearest slope, likely without a vehicle to take me there. Will surfing suffice? Time will tell.

Stupid thing: Status Quo
By: konk

Well I just have to say I really miss all my sb.com peeps, this site has been such a great thing for so many years, and I feel like I'm not kickin' it with my friends when I'm not around.  So, the quick update for anyone who wonders where I've been:  I resigned my job and took a few weeks off to catch up on some much needed snowboard time.  I pretty much rode Kirkwood every day for about 3 weeks, stayed in my friends kick ass tour bus that his family with money bought, so it was totally mac and cheese and ramen and riding and sleeping and smoking blunts.  Clutch I tell you, I really needed it.  I had a great job lined up to start with a mortgage lender, and I just finished training.  I'm stoked because I pulled the usual KONK move, #1 guy in my class with two loans already in progress that look like they will fund.  Then I can start to get some real checks and things will settle down.  I kept saying things were gonna mellow out in 3 or 4 weeks perpetually, but it wasn't realistic considering my last job had no opportunity to change the income.  3k a month and that was it, no chance to change anything and my expenses are pretty high so I was hating life.  So there ya have it, getting some spring riding in and enjoying the new place.  Lots of cool people, catered lunches and free gourmet coffee, and a kick ass office building with marble floors, nice artwork, a big ass fountain in the middle of the lobby and skylights.....very decadent and totally perfect for the LEO in meeeeee.  Hopefully I can get moved into a better place where I can get the net, because I can't get it where I live now and it's been the death of me.  Meh, that's all I've got, ya'll rule and I miss ya.

February is officially coming to an end which means two things. Spring riding is nigh and ski-school sessions are over. This means no more group lessons at my local hill, but it also means more random people riding. This week in snowboarding has been a rather eventful one for me, I busted my snowboard twice. Most recently I pulled the heel side screws right out of their inserts effectively stripping them (I'm e-mailing my snowboard's manufacturer to complain about that, my board is only three months old). This sent me on a quest to find some hardware since I lost a screw; the quest continues but that's not pursuant to the current blog post.

Having moved my rear binding back by half an inch to use new inserts, I went to Cascades to test out my new wider stance (if 3cm makes a difference in snowboard length, 3cm might make a difference in stance too). After a couple runs, I was casually carving turns near the bottom of the main blue run when a skier collides with me from behind. He just clipped me so I managed to sustain verticality but he went down so I decided to slide down to make sure he was alright. This is when he started hollering at me for being irresponsible and that I should be more careful... what? I promptly recited the alpine responsibility code to him and was strongly tempted to tell him that if he can't ski in control that he might want to consider golf; but I held my tongue. He didn't however, and became rather confrontational with me; I think he actually wanted to fight me. Now I'm not a big dude but this guy was starting to piss me off and I was very tempted to put this geezer on his ass; but again I held fast.

Once he gathered up his gear from his recent “yard sale”, he made his way back to the lift line with his two kids in tow (Wow! What a fantastic role model). I was getting on the chair behind him with my buddy Dana and his friend Perkins. As his chair started up the hill, he turned around to me and uttered some threats, shaking his fist at me and everything (See above comments about role models). I was expecting him to be waiting for me at the top of the lift (Sigh! beating up a middle aged man was not what I had in mind when I decided to go snowboarding tonight). Not surprisingly though, once we got to the top, he and his kids cheesed it pretty quickly and were not to be seen for the rest of the night, not even by the lifties who at this point were quite curious about what all the ruckus was about.

Morals of this story:

  • Forget about respecting your elders, RESPECT ME! I'm probably in better shape than they are.

  • If you're going to act like a tough guy, don't yell threats from the chairlift then cheese it right after; it will just make you look like a fool.

  • If you're going to behave like this guy did, be careful to not confront resort staff; we can clip your pass.

Well I'm off to wait by the flag pole; I've got more crotchety middle aged men to beat up. Until next time...

Keep Shreddin' the GNAR!

J.

My Blog: Day 35-36
By: daisys95gt

spent Memorial Day weekend in CO with my boy Brian, & rode Saturday & Sunday at A-Basin. Your typical spring riding, slush, pond skimming, & midwest style jumps. We saw several people fall head first into the water, brrrr! Sunday we actually got snow. Monday we hiked to St. Mary's Glacier & then climbed to the top of a big rock hill across the lake from the glacier. Next time we may take our snowboards up there with us. After snowboarding bumps for 2 days & a day of hiking & climbing rocks, my knee got worked into the ground, now I'm limping :(

ok, the end is here, but it was definately worth it. even though it was shi*tty ass weather for most of the winter, it was still one of my best seasons. i didn't break anything or scrape anything so yeah. and spring riding is the shi*t. especially riding over huge puddles and going on closed trails where the run is half snow half dirt. good times<3 haha.

p.s. it's my birthday tomorrow, send me lots of <3 !!!!

Snowboard News: Big Bear Shop Trip
By: NOMISDesign

An all expense paid trip to Big Bear Mountain, with the NOMIS team... Does life get any better? I think not!

The first annual NOMIS “A Day in the Life,” shop appreciation trip went off in a big way and everyone involved agreed it must become an annual event. NOMIS gave away a four day all expense paid trip to a shop to attend a week long photo shoot and chilling session with team riders, and NOMIS staff.

mags-IMAGE-6.gif
The crew from left to right: Derek Dennison, John Paul Pardy, Joey Sexton, Chad Holmes, Keaton Pearson, and Steve Rose

The rental car rolled into “The Block Hotel” in Big Bear California, packed to the brim. Its occupants included NOMIS team riders Joey Sexton, Chad Holmes, and Derek Dennison, being guided by Steve Rose; along with John Paul Pardy, and Keaton Pearson from the winning store, Board Paradise out of North Carolina.

magsIMAGE-4.gif
A feast at a resort that a snowboarder can only afford when on the company's travel budget.

magsIMAGE-5.0.gif
Some call it crail nose, others call it nuclear, Joey S. likes to call it tweaked.

Unlikely weather consisting of pouring rain, blizzard like snow, dense fog, and select minutes of sunshine sums up the first three days of the trip. The final day turned out to be the typical warm bluebird spring riding conditions we had headed to So Cal for, and the features at Big Bear didn’t let us down. Other than riding the sick park, our crew went on late night rail mission and an evening half pipe photo shoot. The lack of sleep however did not slow anyone down or keep them from smiling, laughing, and throwing high fives.

Derek enjoys late night action and here is another example.

All in all, the trip was a huge success. A couple few big thanks go out to: John and Keaton from Board Paradise, Liko, Rich, Savanah, and the peeps at “The Block Hotel,” Justin Meyer and Paul Amyot for all the filming and photography, Johnny Miller for showing us some “spots,” and last but not least Kim, Marty, Clayton and the rest of the staff and park crew at Big Bear, you guys are sick!

Look forward to seeing all of you again soon!

Quad is STILL NOT OPEN! That's kinda weak but whateeeever. Went riding today, first day at Apex since Whistler. I discovered there is some new boxes and shi*t up there. Learned some trickies WOO! Overall, it was one of the funnest days I've ever had snowboarding, it was like spring riding in your t-shirt and good fun.

Apparantly there is a jib jam at the bottom of Okanagan Run on the 28th at 6:30. Show up for that it should be fun.

Bye for now kiddies,
Sleep tight, it's christmas eve!
