Pushing for Perfection

Hey Jibbers and Jumpers,
The past couple of weeks in The Parks have been really exciting times for everyone. We've seen lots of sun and snow. Our Parks are now pretty much built to capacity, giving our teams the opportunity to really pimp out our features. We've been switching rails and jumps in and out to keep things fresh. Both mountains are changing daily. The Showcase Showdown this year was a huge success. Big shout out to Brad Broughton from the shop, and his team of volunteers for their help with design and building. The Atomic Supercross is this weekend; results to come.

On Blackcomb
- The Snowcross track has a new line this year that everyone should check it out. The course is open daily.
- The Highest Level, and Choker lines are riding perfectly every day, the lines are dialed right in nicely. The Highest Level is rounded out at the bottom by a massive re-entry platform with an Up-Rail to Wallride. The Choker line finishes with an awesome Quarter Pipe that is Zaugged daily.

On Whistler
- The Bobcat line (right side of the park) has been filled out with an A-frame rail combo, a couple more jumps, and tweaks to the other jibs.
- The Chipmunk line is fully built out as well, with a couple new jumps, and changes to the jib lines Park Events
- The next King of the Rail comp is going to be March 21st. This is event is the last KOR of the season, and may even be moved to the base of Whistler (next to the GLC) this time. So make sure you register
- The following day (March 22nd), will be the Park Rider Series Slopestyle, on Whistler Mountain. The course will be on Whistler's Bobcat line (right side of park). All levels of riders and skiers are welcome so come on up, and ride in this fun event

See you all up here!
- James Sayers

Whistler Blackcomb's annual Showcase Showdown went off last Saturday as onlookers crowded into Skiers' Plaza and onto patios to watch the action at the base of Whistler Mountain. After a hard fought battle, Caley Vanular claimed first place in the women's category. Second place went to Molly Milligan and third went to Janelle Prtichard. Meanwhile, Andrew Burns took first in the men's category, while Rusty Ockeneden claimed second place and Mike Osachuk took third.

The six riders, who won a total of $5,000 cash and prizes from event sponsors, including Nixon headphones and Sandbox helmets, will also be featured in Sandbox's next snowboard film "Shine On."

In its twelfth year, the Showcase Showdown has enjoyed another successful transformation and has proven once again why Whistler Blackcomb's Nintendo Terrain Parks are ranked No. 1 in North America.

This year's course was inspired by the mini-parks in locals' backyards all over Whistler. The slopestyle course design, which included rails and industrial-style jib features with happy faces, was a collaboration of Showcase Team Manager Brad Broughton; Kevin Sansalone of Sandbox Films; Steve Petrie master park-builder and designer and builder of the 2010 Olympic Halfpipe; and Whistler Blackcomb's Park Rangers.

Events/News - Whistler Blackcomb: A week of snow & sun
By: WhistlerBlackcomb

What a week! It all started Monday morning... I opened my eyes to see something that caught me off guard; fluffy snow covering the trees outside my window! Snowphone Steve assured me there was at least 25cms of pow in the alpine, so after a flurry of phone calls to friends, I headed up the hill.

Now don't get me wrong, I LOVE powder days, but it's always such a scramble! We had a tough time sticking together in a group of 5 with 3 snowboarders and 2 skiers. We all met up doing a couple of Jersey Cream laps, getting fresh lines and face shots on Cougar Milk. Pretty much all of the alpine was still closed for Avi-control, so we chose to line up at Crystal Chair. We waited and waited... Some trouble maker in the line started throwing snowballs and that was it, a full on snowball war ensued! Our group decided to bail and go riding and it opened after we left! ALWAYS stick with the lift line you choose, that was my lesson of the day.

Over the next couple days the skies opened up and puked a whopping 84cms! My next day to ride was Thursday, so I headed up for a cruise and I couldn't believe it, blue bird! New snow & sunny skies = perfection. The week isn’t even over yet, the Showcase Showdown returns on Saturday (tomorrow) with a different style; the Backyard Slopestyle. Inspired by the mini-parks in locals' backyards all over Whistler, the Showdown will blow the scene up with a snowboard slopestyle at the base of Whistler Mountain. I cannot wait to check it out! Get more info at showcaseshowdown.ca

Keep on shredding!

"Enjoy The Ride...More" is DC’s marketing slogan for their highly anticipated release of snowboards this winter. Last night at 50-50 Brewery in Truckee, CA, PortersTahoe.com and the DC crew – including riders Devun Walsh, Iikka Backstrom, Aaron Biittner, and Lauri Heiskari – all came out with more than just their A-game to kick off this 20th anniversary edition of Mack Dawg’s "Double Decade."

Somewhere between 400 to 500 people joined Porters and DC at the biggest movie premier ever at 50-50 Brewery. There were two screens – inside and outside – showing the next progression in riding with several very well-received segments from not only the DC crew, but riders like Wille Yli-Luoma, Eero Ettala, and the closing part of Jussi Oksanen. The movie also sprinkled in 20 years worth of snowboarding pioneers and ground breaking MDP parts over the years from names like Chris Roach, Nate Cole, Noah Salasnek, JP Walker, and Jeremy Jones (past and present). "Double Decade" truly does give you more by throwing in a great, eclectic mix of music from the likes of the Pet Shop Boys, Devo, David Bowie, Doobie Brothers, and – believe it or not – the Grass Root’s "Let’s Live For Today" for a very soulful and artistic Jussi part.

But that wasn’t all for the day.

Chris “Gunny” Gunnarson from Snow Park Technologies arranged for some of the Porters crew and the DC boys – Devun Walsh, Iikka Backstrom, Aaron Biitner, and first-time golfer Lauri Heiskari – to play a round of golf at Northstar-at-Tahoe earlier in the afternoon. Conditions were ideal. Scores were very competitive in a "best ball", two-man format of 5 teams. In the end, a little home-field advantage – and let’s face it – just plain better skills from Gunny and Walsh propelled them to the win.

Longtime Nor Cal industry veteran and DC sales rep Ron Depp put the evening in perspective this way, "It’s amazing that we could draw such a large crowd with only 5 days advance notice and have so many ex-pros and industry people come out of the woodwork...or the Truckee woods!" Bill Markham, DC Snow Sales Manager, added, "Double Decade is a walk down memory lane that showcases many legends of the 90’s rail brigade. The film also captures how shredding has progressed from backyard rails to big mountain kickers. Couple this with almost 500 kids, beer from 50-50, great support from Porters and DC pro shreds Iikka, Devun, Biittner and Lauri and you got a night you won’t forget....or remember in some cases!"

Judging by how big of a smile Lauri Heiskari had at the end of the night, everyone truly had a great time...and MORE!

WHISTLER GETS SET TO SPOTLIGHT BIGGEST TALENTS IN MUSIC, SPORTS AND ARTS, APRIL 11-20

Preparations underway to ready Whistler for

13th TELUS World Ski and Snowboard Festival

WHISTLER, BC, April 10, 2008 –

The TELUS World Ski and Snowboard Festival’s unique fusion sports, music and arts gets underway April 11 in Whistler and operations crews are busy getting the resort ready for ten days and nights of non-stop events and entertainment.

In the Village, where 11cm of snow fell earlier in the week to freshen up the 265cm base, 10 tonnes of scaffolding is being set up to build viewing platforms, the Pontiac Battle of the Bands stage, and the Outdoor Concert Series Main Stage, where headline acts De La Soul, Lil’Jaz, The John Butler Trio, Blackalicious, The Trews, Ill Scarlett, Daniel Wesley, Julian Marley and Michael Franti & Spearhead will perform free concerts daily from 2:30pm.

On the mountain, 3 different competition venues are being constructed, providing elite level features to showcase the world’s best skiers and snowboarders. The Big Air (finals taking place at the base of Whistler, April 12, 8pm) will feature a brand new design, with a 65 foot step-over gap jump that Whistler Blackcomb Events Manager, YP (Peter) Young says, “will allow the riders to go higher and farther than ever before.”

In addition, the 500 foot long Superpipe has been rebuilt to feature sheer 20 foot walls that will see riders and skiers at the April 16-19 competition gain maximum amplitude.

The Chief of Course for the Big Air and the Superpipe, master park-builder Steve Petrie, is also the designer and builder of the 2010 Olympic Halfpipe.

With Whistler Blackcomb’s talented crew of groomers and pipe builders logging more than 350 hours on the venues, and more than 7 million gallons of water pumped through the system by the snowmaking team, the Superpipe and Big Air jump will be ready to draw the best performances from over 200 skiers and snowboarders from around the world.

Saturday, April 12 will also see Blackcomb Mountain host the resurrected Orage Masters, a slopestyle contest that features the hottest skiers in the new school world, on a course designed by pro athlete, Vernon lad, TJ Schiller and built by a Whistler Blackcomb team under the guidance of park builder extaordinaire, Marty Gautrey.

Sporting events with a non-stop mind-blowing soundtrack is not all that’s in store at the thirteenth TELUS World Ski and Snowboard Festival.

The event’s artistic side has been nurtured over previous years, with 10,000 tickets available in a showcase of mountain culture, from Icon Gone, a debate about whether the best of Whistler is history (April 13), to the Schick Extreme 3 Fashion Exposed (April 18), to the theatre performance of The Chairlift Revue (April 20).

The Festival’s multi-media visual feasts, the Olympus Pro Photographer Showdown (April 17), the D250 Filmmaker Showdown and Second Cuts Screening (April 15-16), and the world premiere of mountain bike film Seasons (April 11), guarantee that every seat feels front and centre to capture the action with the ground-breaking multimedia installation, currently being constructed.

The 6-sided screen, dubbed “the Borg”, is being installed by a 10 person team at Rocky Mountain Productions, with 900 foot of truss, 7 miles of cable, and a total amplification of sound of 55,000W. (That’s nearly 800 times the sound of your home stereo, according to the godfather of the installation, Scott McPhee.)

The Borg will then be struck down to make room for the Festival’s finale, the DJ Experience, featuring DJ Dan and Donald Glaude, Mark Farina and Mat the Alien, ensuring that the party doesn’t end when the sun goes down, April 19.

175 pieces of original art from leading street artists around the world are being hung in the 10,000 square foot gallery foyer of the TELUS Conference Centre, for the urban art exhibit, Brave Art, April 11-18. The exhibit receptions on April 12 and 13 will feature live painting from over 40 artists.

Whistler is a hive of activity, preparing the resort for ten days and nights of non-stop events and entertainment, that will turn Whistler into ground zero for the biggest celebration of mountain life, starting tomorrow.

The snow keeps falling here in Whistler. We now have had 29 feet of snow that has fallen so far this year and over 3 months left of the ski season. We are offering training all the way until the end of April for our groups and custom training into May. We are busy planning our 'World Trips' and the NZ Trip for September is up on the web site if you would like to come.

Over the past month we have had loads going on.

We successfully completed our second road trip for the season down to Mt Baker with our 12 week campers and were met with fantastic conditions. It was quite the adventure as I found out that my wife Karen was going into labour just as we were putting in our first powder runs of the day at Mt Baker. The day was a real blast for me. We shredded powder all morning with sunny skies and then rallied back to Vancouver to make it just in time for Baylee to be born - you really can't beat that for a day to remember. Check out www.pro-ride.com/diary.cfm for the pictures of the day.

Instructor Results

We have had excellent results from our Level 2 crew who did their exams and a couple of them who wanted to work have already been hooked up with employment with Whistler Blackcomb for the remainder of the season. A good friend of ours who does the hiring for the school came by the camp house and chatted with the crew about how to gain employment with the mountain and at the end of his session offered work to the people who were interested.

Jump Day

We have a backcountry style jump day planned for Friday which should be a blast. We have snow forecasted all the way to Friday which is going to make for super soft landings. As a bonus, Cooler - European Women's Life Style Magazine will be on hand to document the activities. Jump day just happens to correspond with one of the campers birthdays so it is going to be quite an affair.

Competition News

Lots of great results this month from the crew. Ryan Rausch has been travelling the globe and is dominating as usual. Crispin Lipscomb was in Italy for the World Cup Half Pipe and took the win for Canada. This is only a week after winning the Showcase Showdown. The boy is on fire!

Logan and I recently competed in the showcase showdown last weekend and had a great time. The usual went down. i fell in one of my runs... didn't make it to the finals and Logan landed his and made it to the finals and got 5th place. This was the 11th annual showcase showdown and it has evolved over time for sure, it used to be a quarterpipe contest in the
spring up Whistler. Now they have turned it into a nighttime pipestyle
contest at the base of Blackcomb and it is great times. It is spectator
friendly with tons of prizes and a beer garden. It got really warm so the
course was falling apart a bit and the landing to the hips were getting
sketchy but i had fun hitting the hips and the take offs were nice. Pete
Anderson and Trini were on the mic being hilarious and making the crowd laugh as they tear in to some of the competitors subtlety. All in all the event was fun and we had fun shaking it up at the old Garfinkles
afterwards! Dom Gauthier took this photo of me on the hip. check it out!

TransAm: Hyland Hills

By Adam Kisiel
Feb 4, 2008

Going to the circus is something everyone should do at least once in their lifetime. My favorite part was seeing how big the elephant poop was and watching what seemed like a thousand midget clowns crawl out of a vw bug. I was consumed in this same feeling, while I stood at the bottom of the TransAM mini park at Hyland Minnesota. An event that I thought would never rival the raw in your face experience of seeing that same group of circus clowns pedaling around on one bike, all sitting on each others shoulders, while they juggled axes.

The event started in vicious fashion as all 130 riders disregarded any official start and started the traffic jam in an everyone for themselves riot. The Ride Snowboards feature was a gigantic mailbox where at any given time you could see upwards of four riders jibbing it at once. The Dakine feature was a plastic sewer pipe wide enough for Paul Bunyan's crapper. The park crew at Hyland set it up like an oversized pole jam or poop shooter, much to the delight of the Dakine twins. Half of the field gathered around the Oakley mini quarter to stage their own Artic Challenge session on the mini replica feature. The High Cascade volcano jump was spitting out riders at a rate that sent tremors across the twin cities area. Dan Liedahl and Tanya Zarling were seen on the Zumiez flat box and the Hyland rainbow, jibbing in search of the Transworld Snowboarding pot of gold, in the form of TransAm top honors.

One of the competitors must have noticed the look on my face as I watched in awe of the no holds barred action. He smiled and said, "this is just like any other Saturday at Hyland, don't fall or you will turn into the next jib." It was at that point I thought this wasn't just another TransAm stop, but a stage for only the most talented, raw, and untamed. I was sure that these kids would jib your face off if there was a take off up to it. Andy Barringer proved you didn't need to jib anything, you just needed to be upside down throughout most of the contest. He joined the list of 40 riders that made it to the Ultimate Jam finals. In the finals Josh Tranby MJ'd nearly every feature and the Hyland park crew added a hit to gap the backside of the quarter pipe. This was not the time in the circus where those little dancing ponies took center stage; it was time for the fire-eaters and lion tamers to be showcased. The winners from this intense showdown to throw down walked away with Ride Snowboards, Dakine custom backpacks stuffed with awesomeness from Oakley, Transworld Snowboarding, and Zumiez. High Cascade trophy babies were also awarded to the top three competitors. There is a small resort in the city of Minneapolis where the riders are under the close watchful eye of uniformed officer's with badges, as they contend to see who drops in next. It is only fitting since these rider's show no signs of backing down to anyone. Hyland MN is not for the soft.

TransAm Hyland Final Results:

Men:
1. Dan Liedahl
2. Todd Kirby
3. Jeff Gabrick

Women:
1. Tanya Zarling
2. Coco Cook
3. Monica Nhep

As a snowboarder, have you ever wanted to travel to far away places? Most likely you have and even given it a try. The hard part is finding the right place to go and having an idea of what to expect once you get there. With this is mind the guys at ATG Media are developing a knew way to create and distribute snowboarding films and doing it with a different style then your regular video. This season’s film is titled “Translocation”, and it is a new way to look at snowboarding film. “Translocation” is a 16mm and HD travel based video that spotlights some of the world’s best snowboarders traveling to some of the sickest mountain ranges this planet has to offer.

Instead of filming all season to create one video with different riders parts, The “Translocation” project aims to take a different approach at delivering it’s content. “The video will come out at different times throughout the year, highlighting each location they visit throughout the year. Viewers can then watch the film literally as it is being made. In October 2008 they will release a travel book and DVD that will showcase all their travels. The book will include photos, maps and tons of information on the hot spots to visit. The book will be created in the same style as those backpackers travel books, and will include a full length DVD inside with tons of sick shredding.

Hey Crew,

The past month has blown by and the camps have been busier as ever. We have had fantastic snow conditions here in Whistler and showcased some of the shred action at

Availability for Camp
February is now pretty much booked up for long term courses however we do have space for February 12th, 16th and 23rd for one week camps. With all the snow we have it is going to be an awesome spring. We do have space for the 1,2 4, 6 and 8 week programs starting March 1st and the 4 week programs starting the beginning of April. March is traditionally one of the months where we receive a considerable amount of snow fall so it is a great month to come and ride powder before the spring.
