Please comment.
I work in a chain store. shi*tty deal for me. Good deals on ok stuff and thats sweet for you. We get people who can't afford nice gear(quality) out on the hill for cheap. f*ckin eh. But those of you who can't afford the good stuff, and don't choose to slave for it, I beg you; Stop ARGUING with me. When you come into my store, if you know anything... like the slightest, tiniest tid bit of info, thats fine. I don't ride half the boards i sell, i've rode some. i will tell you that a $300 board isn't gonna handle the best at 60mph but you can still have fun on it, this is the best we got, this is the cheapest etc...
DON't go to the core shops oggle and drool, and then come to me and ARGUE specs, what a board is good for, or how it rides, how f*cking dope burton's new shi*t is and why pow is better than park(!?) boooo f*ckin Hoooooooooooo we don't carry top end. We carry whats called price point. cheap enough for Mom and Dad with a lil somethin extra for me and the kid to talk'em into at the end. Weeeeeeeeoooooooow upsaling is fun. Don't make my life hard just to justify buying something at a chain store. you know it, i know it. There is better stuff out there. I don't got it because it costs more. In the end just buy it or dont get it or get out... see ya on the hill...

ps. Don't come to me and trash a board or boards and then let me catch you in park hitting the easy side of everything and then out of bounds feathering out turns and my landings away!
thx.

Smokin Snowboards
So the Smokin Snowboard factory tour last week had more to it than just the tour, we also went down to pick up some 2010 newly pressed decks. I was lucky enough to nab the new M.I.P. D.I.R.T. Rocker with Magne-Traction with some custom graphics brought to you by JP Lagos at Thesnowlife.com. I was even more excited to try out Smokin’s Magne-Traction since out snow has been rock hard as of late and last time I rode a board with magne it made the saying “Turns ice into powder” hold true. Friday afternoon of last week Squaw was still pretty firm with a nice east wind keeping things rather chilly, so what better time to go try out Smokin Jay “the evil genius’s“new concept.

My first thoughts was the same as any of the other reverse camber boards I have ridden, the nose seems to hook a little quick when you really get the board on edge. Once I detuned the nose and tail a little the board simply took off. The M.I.P. has a great predictable flex that reminds me of many of the old boards from the good old days. Jay doesn’t use fancy barely known named stuff to create his sticks yet he produces a board that rivals all those high-end uber scientific factories. The M.I.P. holds a super fun edge, makes a snappy turn and rebounds really predictably that you can stray away from the park and still rip turns. I have complained for a few years now that many companies are making boards to specific to one discipline and are hard to enjoy on every part of the hill. I think the smoking M.I.P. brings back the idea that you can have a great park board that doesn’t sacrifice the rest of the mountain.

If you are looking for a great park and all around board that’s actually handmade the new 2010 Smokin M.I.P. D.I.R.T. Rocker is gonna blow your mind.

What about the graphics? JP Lagos designed the graphic based loosely off the Obey “Obama” Poster series. Taking funny pictures and translating them into the Obey scheme, JP created a series of Bromodel snowboards. All the boards were either using Smokin’s 2010 M.I.P. blank or the 2010 Superpark blank. So the boards that were in the pictures being finished during the factory tour were none other than the bromodel boards. Special thanks to JP for including my funny grill on a snowboard and Smokin Jay for pressing a super fun board!

Where is your snowboard made? Some foreign country where all the workers have no idea what snowboarding actually is? In northern Reno NV, in an area where trailer parks abound sits a snowboard factory where a creative evil genius lives. You won’t find any high tech computerized equipment or even security guards protecting the company’s secrets from prying eyes. You will find the type of place where some of the best innovation has always come from… a ghetto garage!

Smokin Jay is an evil genius… not in the crazy axe murdering type way, more the artistic friend you had in school that you weren’t sure where his mind was. Jay was busy gluing one of his new 2010 models when we arrived and as soon as he had a chance to step away he was off and running with the “Factory Tour”. I use the term factory loosely since most of the time you might equate the term Factory to thousands of square feet and a building in an industrial district of town. Smokins factory looks like a cross between an old bomb shelter and chop shop. Inside most of the equipment has been piecemealed together, with bare wires and jays own inventions throughout the building.

Joining on the tour was Jay’s sidekick binky who was just as stoked to show us all the funny corners in the building. While at first glance it looks like a lot stuff packed around stuff but as Binky explains it you can start to see Jay’s twisted vision of how the process works. From the room with all the templates and edges, the room where he cuts out the sidewalls and the workstation that he uses to glue the boards together. And as you watch Jay and Binky work what looks like chaos starts to looks like an interpretive dance where both play off each other though out the entire process.

Smokin Jay takes a huge amount of pride in the boards he produces and each board must be perfect for him to sell it. His entire process feels more artistic than mechanical and each board seems like its own individual masterpiece. He inspects each board for any imperfection or graphic blemish before giving the stamp of approval to sell the board. So when you see the tag handmade you know that the board you are receiving was entirely handmade by Smokin Jay and the pride taken to create the board reflects in the quality of the product you are receiving.

When you get a chance try out a Smokin snowboard, these are quality snowboards made by an evil genius snowboarder who believes in making quality snowboards.

Thank you Jay and Binky for the Great night! check out http://smokinsnowboards.com/ for more info or check out the Smokin Snowboards we carry.

Road trips

With the lack of snow on the Island this last month we were getting a little too antsy to sit around so we headed out on holiday road. First we went out to Banff and hit up Sunshine Village. It was my first time out to the rockies and it was awesome! The weather was perfect; sunny and cold and we got lots of killer pics and footage for our new movie project. We'll definitely be going back again. Thanks a lot to Doug Firby for the great hospitality. www.skibanff.com

Patrick Kitto enjoying the cold smoke out in Banff. Mmm Mmm good

When we got home there was still not very much snow so we packed up some clean undies and headed out again, this time to Whistler. Whistler is always wicked and this trip was no exception. We shredded the opening day of Blackcomb and then Whistler the next day and it rocked ( my board and my mind ) haha. Early season conditions joke... Thanks to Ryan Proctor for hooking us up. www.whistlerblackcomb.com

Myles col' kickin' it with his favourite run on Blackcomb behind him: the Sudan Couloir

When we got home from Whistler, guess what? Still not that much snow. So we packed up some more clean undies and headed out again, this time to Golden. Now if you've been to Kicking Horse you know it's rad. Steep, deep and gnarly. We had a wicked time there until the third day when the temperatures were a cool -28 in the hills and our nostrils were sticking together when we went outdoors. We all looked like Michael Jackson with our noses frozen closed so we bundled our Vancouver Island butts back into the truck, cranked the heat and headed back west. Thanks to Jordan Petrovics for the hook up.

Matty, Joe and our main man Eric. "Close the damn door, it's cold!" Thanks to Eric for setting us up so good. You rule Rolston!

Matt Trigg riding some deep, cold stuff with Ole in the background filming. Trigger kind of looks like Darth Vader coming out of there.

Back Home
Now don't get me wrong, we've had a few good days of hiking around here. We've been noboarding up the hill quite a bit and even hitting some urban stuff in town with the cold temperatures.

No bindings? No problem... Ole loves noboarding. photo by Patrick Kitto

Welcome to the first global online Game of S.N.O.W – the Quiksilver King of S.N.O.W. Hampus Mosesson is submitting the first trick and you are pleased to copy it! Switch BS 180° Indy is the trick of the hour which you should copy on every similar kicker on mother earth and with as much style and power as possible. Don´t forget to show your face right into the cam after you did your Switch BS 180° Indy!

This round’s winner will get a nice Quiksilver Package including: Quiksilver Travis Rice Signature Goggle and the Quiksilver Premium SnowPack (thechnical snowboard features, suspensions system, LED lighting system und premium audio components – make the backcountry a whole new experience)

This winter is going to be one giant worldwide session!

From now on every 14 days one of your favorite Pros will present a trick you have to imitate within two weeks and on a similar obstacle. Once you have sticked and – hopefully – filmed the trick you must upload it as video file to the Quiksilver King of S.N.O.W platform. Needless to say that you should try to redo the trick with as much style as possible in order to get as many judging points as possible in the worldwide ranking. Because in every single round – that means every 14 days – the most gnarly and styled trick will be rewarded with a massive stuff package.

We will make you rich and famous!

The top four snowboarders that have earned the most judging points after Round 7 will be invited by Travis Rice and Mathieu Crepel to their invitational-only event in La Plagne, France – called Chromatophobia. Quiksilver will assume just everything – flight, accommodation and catering – no matter from where on this planet you have to travel.

T-Rice will present the final trick in the Quiksilver King of S.N.O.W snowpark the four finalists have to copy. A camera team will capture every single trick and finally upload it to www.king-of-snow.com. Afterwards the tricks will be judged one more week for the very last time. The one with the highest score may be pleased about 5.000,- USD cash and short interviews with all our media partners worldwide.

As a special goodie the four lucky finalists will get a wildcard to compete with Mathieu, Travis and many other topguns at the Chromatophobia.

My Blog: Afton update
By: bernwern

Been shredding as often as I can, assuming conditions are at least OK.  I refuse to ride on ice and crap this season.

So yesterday it started snowing around 11AM.  High temp of 7° yesterday, so snow was very light and dry compared to typical MN snowfall.  I was kicking myself in the ass for not coming prepped to leave from work, but I knew I had domestic responsibilities with my wife gone a few days.  As I left work, i knew I needed to ride the freshies, so I busted ass to get my errands done.

What was usually a 20 minute trip to Afotn turned out to be 70 minutes courtesy of dipshi*ts doing 20mph on the multi-lane interstates.  As soon as I got on the regular highways I easily did 55 with no issues.  I got to Afton about 6:10, ans on the slopes by 6:30.  Hardly anyone was there!  Even better, those that were there had crappy wax jobs and/or didn't know how to ride in fresh snow!  Most were in the chalets :)  I had free-reign!  Snow was slow in the flats, but no issues if you pumped your legs to build speed.  Soft and easy to cut!  Best night at Afton I have had in nearly 2 years!  No groomers out to ruin the fresh stuff either :)

The only draw-back was the cold.  I was warm and had to open vents to dump heat, but sitting on a snowcovered chair caused it to melt, then freeze to my legs and ass on my next run.  This took it's toll ad required 2 pitstops to the chalet for a Rusty Nail.  I lost about 45 minutes of riding, meaning I only got a little over 2 hours on the slopes.  I made the most of it, shedding like a mad man and possing people left and right (the few that were out there).  One skier was keeping up with me....or should I say I was keeping up with him?  I had to strap and unstrap afterall, and we were always 1 chair apart.  Most times I would get 2+ runs in before others made it down, and I like to lay some deep lines.

So, all in all, Afton is doing pretty damn good.  They are 95% open now with good coverage.  More snow in the forecast on Thursday night and Friday AM, so hoping this will be a great winter!

-B

EDIT: forgot to mention I started ordering new gear yesterday....boots and board are coming already, but the bindings are awaiting new stock and I was told the website will be updated in 1-2 days.  I'll post pics once it all arrives!

Yep, there's only 3 days left to enter our Find the Money Line contest.

Pretty easy stuff. All you gotta do is buzz around our new zone map, find the money line logo, and enter to win.

Why Find the Money Line? Because that's exactly what we'll be doing with our Big Mountain Experience trips lined up for later this winter. Pray for some snow and when it comes, we'll be getting lots of it!

Participants arrive at Squaw on February 26, opening ceremonies take place on Friday, February 27 and competition is scheduled for Saturday, February 28 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. In the case of inclement weather, the event will be postponed to an alternate date between February 29 and March 5. Spectators can enjoy the festive atmosphere with live music and ongoing events at The Village at Squaw Valley plus another village at Squaw Valley’s High Camp.

Riders participating in the Squaw event, which is the second leg of the Freeride World Tour, will arrive in California after showing their stuff in Sochi, Russia. A couple years ago, I fell in love in Jay Peak. An otherwise cold, windy and miserable day would also prove to be one of my best. There is something to be said about visiting places that were the setting for important moments of your life. Since November 22nd was set to be opening day at Jay, and due to the personal significance of the resort, I decided to get a car load of bros to go down there and ride.

Yeti, Marc, and Brad on the lift
The unusual suspects of the bro-down in Jay.

The road trip started out early, I picked up Yeti and Brad, and with Yahoo! directions in hand, we proceeded east for what we hoped would be a good day of riding (first for Brad and Yeti, second for me). The drive was mostly uneventful up until the Canada-USA border where we got pulled aside by the customs agent. He asked us if we were carrying more than $10,000 in cash (I wish we had that much scratch). I guess he wanted to search our stuff to make sure we weren't secretly part of the wealthy elite.

Normally a customs search would be no big deal, however, in this instance Brad really needed to use the restroom. So he asked the customs agent "do you guys have a public washroom in here?" To which the agent replied "It makes no sense for us to have public restrooms here because if you were smuggling drugs you could go flush them, or if we say something you don't like you can smear the whole place in poo." (no joke, he said that). Of course that's when we realized that Brad had probably set off a red flag with his request. Fortunately it didn't take long for them to search the car and they didn't make a huge mess of it. Once we were out of visible range of the border, we had to pull over to the side of the road so Brad could take care of business.

Yeti and random guy with identical gapers.
Yeti meets his doppleganger. What are the odds of seeing two of the same gaper.

With our urinal emergency behind us, we continued on toward Jay. However, we ended up taking a wrong turn (we turned up VT-105 instead of VT-242). Once that feeling of being in the wrong place set in, we decided we should pull over and ask someone for directions. Fortunately there was a pedestrian up the way. Yeti started joking how it was probably hillbilly with a shotgun. As we approached, we realized that this guy did in fact have a rifle slung over his shoulder. Not to be deterred, however, we stopped and asked him for quick directions. He confirmed that we had in fact taken a wrong turn and kindly directed us on how to get back. We thanked him and made our way. When we finally arrived at Jay, we were stoked to realize that it was snowing pretty heavily.

No sooner had we started unpacking did the gaper hunt begin. The first victim: Yeti. He decided to rock a purple one piece but because he does it in typical Yeti style, it had a certain panache that couldn't be ignored. However, Brad had been instructed before he left to make sure to spray a gaper wearing skier, so he looked at Yeti and said "expect to be sprayed."

Although Yeti's was the first, it certainly wasn't the last gaper we saw. In fact no sooner had we gotten our lift passes did we notice another skier wearing the exact same gaper. An instant friendship was forged.

For our first run of the day, we decided to go with the more difficult of the runs that were available to us. The snow was good but the moguls were large and the visibility basically nil. Which is probably why we hadn't noticed that we had ventured onto one of the closed sections of the run. This is when I fell in the creek (I seem to do this at least once a year). None the worse for wear, I tried to make my way back to the lift except I found the going to be tough (Yeti and Brad were already way ahead of me). That's when I realize that I have about 2 inches of sluch caked onto my base. I finally cleaned it off so we could resume our riding.

Yeti and Brad standing in the snow.
Gene Kelly sings in the rain but Yeti and Brad sing in the snow. The Jay clouds strike on opening day.

We spent the rest of the morning shredding up any run that was open until our legs were sore and our finger tips frozen. We decided to head inside for a while to warm up our fingers and take a bio-break. This is when things almost went south. While going to the restroom, Yeti's iPhone fell out of his pocket. He realized it was missing and we spent the next 15 minutes or so re-tracing his steps trying to find it. After asking pretty much everyone in the lodge if they had seen it, and only seconds before Yeti lost it and started throwing tables around, he realized that it had fallen into the hood of his gaper. Crisis averted.

The rest of the afternoon was a lot more of what we experienced in the morning: snow, lots of riding, some freshies, some gapers, more snow, and lots of laughs (did I mention it was snowing). At one point, while marveling at the heavy snowfall, we came upon a guy sitting in the snow, seemingly trying to fasten up his bindings. What was significant was that he was complaining that he wanted to go back to Delaware. I said "But there's no snow in Delaware!" "Exactly" he said which made me wonder what he was doing in Jay in the first place.

Finally when it was time to call it a day, we packed up all of our gear and made our way back toward the border. Four hours or so and 63 litres of fuel later, we made it back to Canada's capital craving massages and sleep. We were thankful to have benefited from the mystical Jay clouds for a truly epic opening day in Jay and to have averted any potential buzz-kill worthy crisis. I was happy to have gone back to a really important junction place of my life. The day was truly epic but at the same time made me realize how much I missed those who could not be there.

Airhole Visit / T.I. Interview / Dave Harris

The Airhole crew came by for a little visit yesterday. I'm pretty sure Kale's from another planet. Here's a taste of the visit.

Dave Harris is the funniest person in the world. The stuff I've heard come out of his mouth over the years is beyond ridiculous. I've been wanting to catch him in the act forever now but he isn't easy to film. Last Sunday I had a major breakthrough.

Keep posted for more Dave on the Dave updates channel on our Video player. The channel will be featuring content by anyone who goes by the name "Dave". Should be good.

This is probably the best Rapper interview I've ever seen.

TI interview!

Chucky's tattoo

After a short little visit by Chucky and his good buddy Dustin Craven yesterday I learned they picked up some pretty epic impulse tatty's last May.

Under the image of the hand throwing up the peace sign it's written "best summer ever" some how predicting the summer they both eventually experienced. Keep an eye out for the next issue of Updown Magazine for more heart warming stories about friendship in Dustin's "Greasy" little interview by yours truly.

Hey look

Perry & Louise... Videos videos videos!!!

So Perry calls us up last minute late Wednesday afternoon because Ben's out of town and he wants someone from the office to head over to Boardroom around six that night to do the IS Eyewear PK for him. Steve's out of town, I have plans so Jr.Burger agrees to help out. I help JB "short for Jr.Burger" get stuff ready then leave the office for the day. The next morning I ask JB how it went. So he gives me the run down then starts telling me about Perry's cute little introduction where he kisses JB's ass for saving his day and shi*t talks me & Steve. "JB's a super hard worker... Blah blah blah... I love him so much... Blah blah blah... he's the only person in the who office that actually works... Blah blah blah... Once Scientists figure it out I want to have his Child... Blah blah blah... I can't believe Karl gets paid a salary to do a blog and I don't even know what Steve does over there?" Real nice Perry. Didn't you just get back from a 3 week holiday where you and your buddy Thelma and Louised it across Canada... You poor thing, Couves must really be working you to the bone.. Haha

The IS Video Player is slowly filling up with content. Its pretty cool, you can download video directly to desktops or to mobile devices. I've set up a bunch of channels with more to come. So far we have PartySnake, Airhole, Kale, Dev, Duff, Daves Updates, Lil Bastards, 15Peddler and Archive channels where we'll be constantly uploading footage. We'll be setting up a SponsorMeChannel shortly where we'll be posting all the sponsor me videos we receive for the world to see and our team to watch and decide who makes the cut. To get your sponsor me video on the SponsorMeVideo channel send it to info@iseyewear.com in a quicktime format.

Hey Mate!! I was at the Oakley Style Wars in Fallscreek  Australia last week.. I had tons of Fun there! great parties at the Silver Ski Lodge with the whole Epic crew! I got to see my old friend PC from the Epic book.. runs in the gum trees, watch Travis’ movie.. I was hosting the contest for the web.. which was kind of funny.. I had tons of fun at the parties! we have seen some water spitting, beer fights, and even some wrestling at some point.. all in a fun party mood in the Aussie way. A that we improvised a trip to Torquay on the way down and went surfing, the water was freezing cold, but it was fun to catch a couple waves..

After the surfing, I joined the 2 Kristis ( Leskinen skier, and KT the Oakley marketing girl in Australia). We flew Sydney, ate some kanguru, did a couple PR stuff there with Alpha magazine and Sports Tonight Australia. I pet a koala and flew to New Zealand.. we spent the first day in Auckland for some more interviews for Sunrise (TV), Curl magazine, Sports Tonight NZ (TV), couple radio stations, and last but not least, we got on the Sports Cafe show hosted by some of the All Blacks (NZ national heroes).. they started asking us some tricky questions when a streaker jumped out of the public and shaked it right before my eyes on live national TV!! I was quite stoked to be there when that happened

anyways got to Queentsown the next day for the Oakley Chicks day out! which took place in Snowpark with another 50 girls.. the sun was shining and the park was super good, we shred together all day, i tryed to give them a couple tips, and we all rode back together to queenstown in a very loud busride. At night we all went for a bootie shake at the subculture bar where our friend RIA was DJing.. she killed it! she played tons of funk, which i love and we all danced all night.. and now I m tired and ready to go back to Euroland!

Thanks to Oakley and thanks tons to KT for organising this trip! thanks to all the girls for coming shredding with us, see you all next year!

New Video Player / Tshirt Idea / Kale Bananza / Mr. T

Welcome to our new video player! Over the next couple weeks we'll be uploading a bunch of new videos including new clips from Party Snake, Still B's footage, treats from Kale's upcoming Airhole video, and tons of fun random stuff. Stay tuned!

So I'm talking on the phone doodling and Bam!

Insta T graphic! Goto is working on a polished version as I type. Look for it in the 09/10 line.

Photo Bananza with the talented Mr. Stephens.

Kale Flying

Kale Wheelieing

Kale Flossing

Kale Corey Hearting

I forgot how hard Mr. T ran shi*t in the 80's.

I bet if you would of sat 50 Cent down as a kid and asked who he wanted to be when he grew up he'd have told you he wanted to be Mr. T. Good on ya fitty, you're just a tv show and cereal sponsor away from making your dream come true.

The new 2009 Smokin Snowboards are in stock, and I know that a lot of people are especially curious about two boards - Mike Basich's brand new pro model as well as the M.I.P.

So here are some close-up shots showing the tip and tail shapes of both boards, a close up of the top sheet graphics, as well as one of each looking down the base to see Smokin's version of magnetraction.

Yummmm...

2009 Smokin Basich Magnetraction Snowboard

Fairly normal nose, but more of a squash tail
