cherie_amanda.jpg Our friend Cherie Carswell (who happens to be a designer over at Westbeach) emailed us last week saying that she was going to this "crazy tranny show" that we had to check out. And since we're not the type to back down from anything weird and unusual we said shi*t YES! We had our interns do a little research and found out that it was non other the world renown transvestite Amada Lepore wich according to Soap box prophet (wich we religiously acknowledge) is "the tranny to top all trannies" (ok?) and she would be playing at some bar called the Biltmore. Playing...we don't know what but it sounded freaky and crazy and dammit we wanted in. Instantly we dropped the mounds of paper work, html-codeing and all sorts of other technical internet workings that we do here at gnarcore.com and called gnarcoraspondent and cultural documenter DAVID ROULEAU who happen to already be in Vancouver. View the Gallery to see how his night went.

Words: Gerhard Gross Images: David Rouleau

Friday the 15th marked the beginning of the first annual Westbeach Chinese Downhill and an effort to reconnect with the spirit of shredding often lost in the myriad of publicly traded companies, profit margins and share-holder accountability that make up the current snowboarding landscape. Although all in the name of fun and beer drinking, a definite air of competitiveness was present amongst the 35 or so contestants vying for the title of fastest shred.

short_gondy.jpg

Westbeach's Dave Short and posse, pre mayhem gondy ride.

Notable attendees included, Shin Campos, Rube Goldberg, Kevin Sansalone, Jon Cartwright, Colin Adair, Ryan Tiene, Steph Just, Beau Bishop, Wiley Tesseo, Robjin Taylor and all the local shreds that made this event great. The rules were simple: first person to reach the Creekside Underground skatepark from the top of Million Dollar ridge and successfully finish a beer would win the affections of his peers and $500.

grey-out.jpg

Weather? Dude it was epic...of course.

hock_robjn.jpg

Brian Hockenstein and Robjn Taylor. Check out the polar opposites of emotions.

In the end it was a mix of veterans Kevin “Snacksie-pants” Sansalone and Shin “Getsu” Campos racing spring-chickens John Caulfield and Anthony Weglan to the finish line. Their shred skills had brought them to the bottom in a possible record time of 4 minutes 53 seconds but the contest was ultimately decided by the beer chugging skills of Shin. Who says professional snowboarding doesn’t teach valuable life skills?

A couple peaches in a big pot of dude stew, Alison Pesemko, Jenelle Pritchard, Steph Just. The only girls brave enough to roll up on this shi*t.

dvx_lens_wipe.jpg

Can i get a lens wipe? Filmer Corey G's rig under attack from the elements.

Perhaps the best part, and the intended effect, was the sense of camaraderie felt by everyone there. It was a great reason for people who are often segregated by work and busy winter schedules to come together and snowboard for the sake of snowboarding. Thanks Westbeach, see you next year.

rube_dont_film.jpg

Don't f*cking film me....ok, ok, just one photo. Nitro, Billabong's Rube Goldberg, shunning the paparazzi

The man, the myth the legend, gnarcore.com's John Caulfield accepting the "hey-you-tried" award from Cartwright... and talk about shnetworking, is that a business card exchange?....call me we'll do lunch.

tiene_gross.jpg

DC Canada team manger Gerhard Gross and DC am Ryan Tiene may not have won the race but they won a spot in our hearts. "Its ok ryan, it's not all about winning, its about having fun... i love you man." they would later hug for an hour straight.

eman_and_crew.jpg

Looky, looky who we ran into. Annum's Ian Gauthier, with homie Matt Macneil and Stepchild's Eman Anderson.

westbeach_collage.jpg

Women, clothing, money and beer.......folks Westbeach is in the house.

winner.jpg

When younger legs have you beat, it comes down to good old fashion beer drinking skills, Shin Campos...aka the Creekside King.

why did we cover this event?

gnarcore.com fully backs companies like Westbeach and any activities dedicated to preserving the soul of snowboarding.

Stay up for the video. coming soon to gnarcore.com.

Now go f*ck shi*t up.

Sessions outerwear is excited to announce that we've added Canadian banger, Dave Rouleau, to our team. Dave has been a steady shred in Canada for years, getting tones of coverage in Snowboard Canada Magazine, co-creating the underground Gnarcore Snowboard DVD series, hosting his own podcast on www.snowboard.com and he's even got a blog...but who doesn't.

Dave is currently shooting for the highly anticipated Capita video and is also knee deep in next years Gnarcore video "The Power normal".

"I like people that stand out in a crowd and have talent and riding skill to back it up….uhh, Dave is pretty cool too, I guess."

Sessions Canada
Team Manager- Mike Prangnell

"Its nice to finally ride for an outerwear company that doesn't f*%king suck. Style, durability and a bit of old school cool, Sessions rules! I'm genuinely stoked to be riding for them and all those amazing humans at No Limits"

Snowboarder/artist - Dave Rouleau.

Also new to our Canadian team are French sensations Phil Jacque and Fred Lacroix. Phil took first place at the 2006 Street Static event in Montreal and was featured inSugar Shack's run away hit "Bandwagon". Look out for Phil in next season's release "Try this at home".

Fred Lacroix is a "fresh out the box AM' who is turning heads and sliding down handrails. Check out Fred's interview on Polarmedia.com. It's all in French but holla!...bzzang!

MOLLY MILLIGAN ON SESSIONS CANADA

Wait, it's not over yet. We've also scowered the Canadian female ranks and are very excited to announce the addition of Molly Milligan to Sessions Canada. Molly has been getting steady coverage in Snowboard Canada Magazine. She's had a busy season so far and Sessions is with her all the way. Yeah Molly!

EVENTS

Sessions Canada was a proud sponsor for the 2007 Sludge Cup. This legendary banked slalom draws riders from all over western Canada and North Western Untied States. The event which takes place at Big White Ski Resort has been going on for 10 years and was started as a memorial event for Canadian pro Neil Edgworth. This year's event was a true old boys club. Second place in the masters division went to Sean Johnson and first went to Alex Warburton. The pro division was won by U.S. legend Temple Cummings.

Soon the snow will melt and Sessions will be there with news on our Bang Bang Canadian skateboard team. Thanks for your time. Now you can press delete.

it feels damn good to back in canada after in two week urban scan of Poland with gnarcore/alterna representives Matt Belzile , photog Shaun Huges and myself. while we were there we also hooked up with a couple happy finnish dudes named annsi maninen and Matti Routinen, anssi likes slayer and methods and rides with the ease of a 30 year old Terje. Matti loves, coke and chips and of coarse his loumilouta (snowboard). and the polls of coarse. Plaster, R2, josephine and a bunch of other amazing people who's names i can't pronounce. there' a lot shaking in the eastern block these days and with creatives poping up all over the "new west" as its being dubbed, snowboarding is helping lead the way of a new cultural movement. -rouleau some of the snowboarding from the trip can be viewed in the upcoming GNARcore and Alterna films........waaaaait. for it...... (be on the look out for more about poland, its years of hardships and how snowboarding has a part in its cultural revolution, in an upcoming SBC story.

Doggers, Whiss is sweet. It is cloudy and warm. Its has the essence of spring. Last night I played dodgeball with Jake and all the burton employees. Today I rode on the '06 gnar bars. Rode the vapor, customX, DCP, Dominant, malolo, and the seven. More to come tomorrow. The CustomX is retarded good. Tonight i am going to meet up with Rouleau and the gnar core homies. Word from the west side.

The gnar core crew recently sent six representive out on the road for a seven day premier tour of western canada. Headed up by Producer and skater Benny Stoddard and his trusty gray van,Freddy Fredrickson (a/v specialist), Jeff Nieckar (pen and paper and bright eyes)along with crew members David rouleau, Kieth Martin, nad Matt Beaudry. the events were as fallows-
PENTICTON-Broken light fixtures, drunk 14yr old girls, titie shots, crazy party footy, bar fights, house parties, shots of yager ( my god), slaps in the face, pissing on magazine racks in 7/11....the list goes on..oh and evry one scored..everyone F.I.T.B.'s
GOLDEN- small crowd, one trashed hotel room (100$), benny striped naked on a strippers pole and burned his hand while torching a scare crow named "russel" with fire works. No one remembers much and in the a.m. we couldn't leave town due to road closers. We piocked up the trips best suvinear a wooden pigeon named Tur-duck-in
CALGAR-- pretty quite.... we are seriously doubting that towns party skills. Lots of love from the few there though
EDMONTON- off the hook, sold out, wasted ,someone sh*t in a urnal, freddy got kiked out of the bar before the movie started, the pigs took away our booze, nun chucks (don't ask) weed and 150$ fine is pending. Rouleau T.K'd, kieth F.I.T.B'd. someone fell in love with a country girl. And i think we came close to getting stabed. big thanks to DV and the becks.
LAKE LOUISE -God help us all, sold out, off the hook, wasted till 7am, Beaudry and freddy and rouleau T.K'd. and lassed (you'll have to ask) kieth scored. rouleau got naked....lets just say that town is no joke and it had us fearing for our lives...we left early that mourning like a robber making a jail brake.
KAMLOOPS-- wasted beyond belief, we all scraped each other , beaudry got a bloody nose, someone started a fire in the parking lot of the hotel, Nieckar got kicked out,the fire trucks came, freddy hit his head, the word spit roast got used (yikes),and some how acouple rooms got busted into....once again we left in a hurry.
