Road trips

With the lack of snow on the Island this last month we were getting a little too antsy to sit around so we headed out on holiday road. First we went out to Banff and hit up Sunshine Village. It was my first time out to the rockies and it was awesome! The weather was perfect; sunny and cold and we got lots of killer pics and footage for our new movie project. We'll definitely be going back again. Thanks a lot to Doug Firby for the great hospitality. www.skibanff.com

Patrick Kitto enjoying the cold smoke out in Banff. Mmm Mmm good

When we got home there was still not very much snow so we packed up some clean undies and headed out again, this time to Whistler. Whistler is always wicked and this trip was no exception. We shredded the opening day of Blackcomb and then Whistler the next day and it rocked ( my board and my mind ) haha. Early season conditions joke... Thanks to Ryan Proctor for hooking us up. www.whistlerblackcomb.com

Myles col' kickin' it with his favourite run on Blackcomb behind him: the Sudan Couloir

When we got home from Whistler, guess what? Still not that much snow. So we packed up some more clean undies and headed out again, this time to Golden. Now if you've been to Kicking Horse you know it's rad. Steep, deep and gnarly. We had a wicked time there until the third day when the temperatures were a cool -28 in the hills and our nostrils were sticking together when we went outdoors. We all looked like Michael Jackson with our noses frozen closed so we bundled our Vancouver Island butts back into the truck, cranked the heat and headed back west. Thanks to Jordan Petrovics for the hook up.

Matty, Joe and our main man Eric. "Close the damn door, it's cold!" Thanks to Eric for setting us up so good. You rule Rolston!

Matt Trigg riding some deep, cold stuff with Ole in the background filming. Trigger kind of looks like Darth Vader coming out of there.

Back Home
Now don't get me wrong, we've had a few good days of hiking around here. We've been noboarding up the hill quite a bit and even hitting some urban stuff in town with the cold temperatures.

No bindings? No problem... Ole loves noboarding. photo by Patrick Kitto

Avalanche Course Coming Up January 24, 25
Avalanche is the greatest hazard facing "out of bounds" backcountry snowboarders, skiers, sledders and ice climbers. This course is a must for those venturing into the backcountry and highly recommended from your friends at JumpCamp.

Have a safe and happy holiday.
See ya in the hills.

I woke up the other morning to the realisation that it's already the month of June. Which means that winter is less than six months away. One reason I suspect the time seems to have gone by so quickly is that, by most standards, the weather this spring has been rather sub-par with cooler than usual temperatures and lots of rain (let's save that precipitation for the winter folks). In the spirit of making the best of it, the Snowboard.Com east coast crew decided to end the month of May with a bang (from a boom stick) by taking in a musical.

The city of Toronto has a rather vibrant theatre scene. Which is not something you would expect snowboarders to notice but we can be highbrow once in a while too. Of particular interest, the Diesel Playhouse was putting on an adaptation of a classic cult zombie movie Evil Dead throughout the spring. When I tell people about it, they usually give me a strange "it's a musical about zombies?" look. I'm quick to point out that It can't possibly be any worse than the opera adaptation of An Inconvenient Truth (an opera about a PowerPoint presentation? Really?) Besides, how often can you say you've been to a musical and left covered in fake blood (I assume it's fake). It's like Shakespeare meets Gwar, how can this possibly suck?

The Ottawa contingent of the crew stayed at the Holiday Inn on King street, only two blocks away from the playhouse. Upon arriving, we shared the elevator with some nice ladies who were in town to see the Dirty Dancing musical at the Princess, and they asked us if we were there for the same reason. Based on my general appearance, I found this question somewhat odd. The look on their face was priceless once we told them we were going to see Evil Dead, and it led me to the conclusion that we probably wouldn't to be going down with them (in the elevator you perverts).

Can you find the snowboarders?
The East Coast Crew waiting to get Evil

After scattering to track down food and beer for later, it was time to meet up with the rest of the crew. Since we were all coming from different directions, and not everyone had actually met in person prior to this meet, the logistics of meeting up were a slight bit difficult. In fact, one of my road trip companions, Chris, called my cell to tell me he was going to meet one of the other members of the crew, also named Chris, whom he had never met previously. I said "you don't know what he looks like, how are you going to spot him on a downtown Toronto street?" His response: "He's a snowboarder." That's when it occurred to me that we snowboarders do live at a different pace than most people (skiers too). Especially in a metropolitan area such as Toronto where people seem to be in much more of a hurry and much more concerned about their image than in most places. I actually had faith, due in no small part to Chris' response, that my shred pals would have no problems finding each other. I was not mistaken, I caught up with the rest of the group in front of the hotel and we made our way to the playhouse.

The musical itself was extremely entertaining. Since it's based on the Evil Dead series of movies (Evil Dead , Evil Dead 2, Army of Darkness), we were expecting a certain amount of camp, and this stage show was certainly full of it. It was done in the perfect self-effacing way which rendered it amusing rather than annoying. The actors even joked about how Spider-Man 3 was a horrible movie (Sam Raimi directed the Evil Dead movie). The highlight of the musical was the final battle at where Ash slayed all the zombies (sorry for the spoiler). I have never seen so much fake blood used in my life. It was squirting out of the walls all over the crowd. Fun times.

After the show, stoked on being evil, the crew got up to some pre-drinking at the hotel in preparation for painting the town red (with blood?). After getting nicely warmed up, we were off to find establishments to consume refreshments. Yet somehow this feat could not be managed without a tree being transplanted into the hallway to our hotel. Apparently alcohol turns people into landscapers.

After walking around for a while and ducking into a number of pubs for refreshments, along with some other random shenanigans, it was time to call it a night since the bars were closing. On the way back to the hotel, I received a text message from Chris saying that apparently someone was shot behind the princess theatre. They were cleaning up the scene as he was walking to meet his ride to Whitby. All this time, I was expecting that our musical would prove more violent than Dirty Dancing, which our lovely friends from the elevator were attending. Clearly I was mistaken on that count.

Check out my crazy hair.
Puppet Jesus sitting at the top of the Big Apple in Colborne.

The following morning, we decided to locate a Golden Griddle we had seen the night before to have breakfast before we left. After fueling up on the all you can eat buffet and omelet bar, it was time to hit the road. On the way home, we decided to stop at the Big Apple in Colborne to buy some pies. This is where our trip took on a whole new dimension of cool when picked up an itinerant puppet with long hair, a beard, and some crazy ideas. That puppet turned out to be Jesus (or at least a very striking likeness thereof). The irony in all this is that we found him at a Big Apple which, if memory serves, is the forbidden fruit of the Genesis. Jesus was quick to participate in our road games of "hot or not" and was surprisingly good at it. Although I suppose I shouldn't be surprised since he is the son of god. In any case, Jesus is dope and he's certainly a good road trip companion, a fan of metal and a darn good dancer. When we first picked him up, he was rather subdued. Nathan even thought he was dead but we knew not to worry, "he'll be full of life in three days." It certainly didn't take three days, especially after a can of Saskatoon Beaver Buzz.

The Beaver Buzz turned out to be a bit of a mistake. Although tasty, it must contain some kind of super diaretic because it made me have to pull off the highway to pee. I was going to wait for the gas station restrooms until Jesus pointed out that the world is my gas station rest room. He's so wise. We finally made it home satisfied with our road trip shenanigans and happy for having found Jesus.

In sticking with my usual modus operandi of never walking away from an experience without learning something, here's what I learned this past weekend:

  • Snowboarders are recognisable everywhere. They seem to have a different gate about them.
  • Apparently the Dirty Dancing musical, counter to conventional wisdom, was much more violent that the Evil Dead musical... go figure.
  • Jesus Saves... road trips. Although ours didn't need saving by any stretch. He sure made it more interesting. Keep your eye open for him, you never know where you might find Jesus.

Phew! Those are important life lessons indeed. Now I'm looking forward to my next live theatre excursion. Rumour has it that Monty Python's Spamalot is coming to Toronto in the fall, maybe I'll check that out. I'll be staying away from the Dirty Dancing musical though, that's much do violent for my sensibilities. In the meantime, I'm rejoicing in the fact that there's less than six months until winter and you can bet that I'm counting down the days.

                                  TARO and KEIJI

Heart Films Interview PART 1

Name: Keiji TAJIMA
Age: 1978 06 06
Occupation: FILMER

Where is your home town and where do you base yourself out of?

TOKYO JAPAN. WINTER - WHISTLER.

How did you get involved with Heart Films?

I WAS FILMING TADASHI AND TADASHI SAID HE WANTED TO MAKE A DIFFERENT/INTERESTING VIDEO SO I CAME ON BOARD. I WAS FREELANCE FILMING UNTIL THEN...SHOOTING FOR BURTON, WHITE OUT, MAYBEM, ETC...MAINLY SHOOTING TADASHI...

How did you begin your career as a professional filmer/editor?

I WAS SNOWMOBILING IN WHISTLER TRYING TO BE A PROFESSIONAL SNOWBOARDER. I BECAME FRIENDS WITH TADASHI AND HE SAID WHY DON’T YOU BECOME A FILMER AND I STARTED GOING UP WITH HIM. THIS WAS AT A TURNING POINT IN MY LIFE…I WAS DEBATING IF I SHOULD QUIT TRYING TO BE A PROFESSIONAL SNOWBOARDER SO I GUESS THIS WAS ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY TO STAY IN SNOWBOARDING BUT AT LEAST MAKE A LIVING IN IT. IT WAS ALMOST IN A JOKING WAY BUT IT BECAME SERIOUS AND REAL. TADASHI SAID IF I WANTED TO BECOME A FILMER I CAN STAY LIVING MY LIFE ON THE MOUNTAIN AND STILL BE INVOLVED. NEXT SEASON I STARTED AS A FILMER 100%. THAT WAS WHEN I WAS 26 SO THAT WAS 3 YEARS AGO…AND I HAVEN’T LOOKED BACK.

What did you think you would be when you were younger?

I THOUGHT THAT I WOULD BE A BUSINESS MAN. SOMEONE THAT WOULD GO TO AN OFFICE EVERYDAY…LIKE MY DAD.

Did you ever aspire to be a professional snowboarder/skateboarder?

YES. I TRIED SINCE THE TIME I GRADUATED HIGH SCHOOL - FOR 7 YEARS! I HAD A SHOP SPONSOR BUT IT NEVER WENT ANY FURTHER THAN THAT. NOW BURTON HELPS ME OUT AS A FILMER AND TADASHI AND YUHO ARE ALWAYS LOOKING OUT FOR ME...

What was your first photo/video you ever took?

I TOOK VIDEO WITH MY LOCAL FRIENDS AND MADE A LOCAL VIDEO. I LIKED THAT I CAN FILM SOMETHING AND IT IS A MOMENT THAT LASTS FOREVER.

What was your most memorial day this season?

WHEN TADASHI LANDED A 1080 IN THE WHISTLER BACKCOUNTRY...OR WHEN TADASHI GOT SWEPT DOWN THE MOUNTAIN IN AN AVALANCE…

Your worst day this season?

I DON’T KNOW…MAYBE WHEN MY SLED BURNED AND MELTED ON TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN IN THE BACKCOUNTRY…2 TIMES!!!

Your best day this season?

I PUT MY CAMERA BAG DOWN AND HAD A LONG POWDER RUN WITH EVERYONE IN THE BACKCOUNTRY. WE WERE SCREAMING OUR HEADS OFF. I ALSO HAD AN AWESOME TIME DURING THE HEART FILMS CAMP WHEN WE HAD A BONFIRE AND STAYED AWAKE UNTIL 4 IN THE MORNING…

Why do you like to film?

I LIKE FILMING BUT I DON’T KNOW WHY…I LIKE IT WHEN I CAN CAPTURE THE IMAGE ON FILM THAT IS IN MY MIND…I LIKE WHEN THE PEOPLE ENJOY THE FOOTAGE THAT I HAVE TAKEN…

Do any riders stand out to you?

TADASHI - OF COURSE! THE WAY HE IS, HIS STYLE - OFF AND ON THE SNOW - THE WAY HE TAKES ACTION, THE WAY HIS MIND IS SET ON SNOWBOARDING AND THE GOALS AND DREAMS HE MAKES INTO REALITY…

Favorite shooting location/style?

I LIKE THE BACKCOUNTRY BECAUSE IT IS QUIET AND I FEEL MY HEART THUMPING…I LIKE THE CHALLENGE OF FINDING NEW TERRAIN AND IT IS LIMITLESS OUT THERE…

Gear?

PANASONIC DVX 100A AND A BOLEX 16MM.

Sled?

2007 Ski Doo Summit 800 151.

Do you prefer video or film?

I LIKE FILM. I LIKE IT BECAUSE IT HAS A SOFTER FEEL. THERE IS A FEEL WITH FILM THAT VIDEO LACKS...

Truck?

A BEATER 1987 NISSAN KING CAB 4X4.

What do you do in the off season?

I HELP EDIT THE FILM. I ALSO WORK 12 HOURS A DAY, 6 DAYS A WEEK - DELIVERYING SUSHI SO I CAN SAVE UP FOR THE UPCOMING SEASON...

Where and who would your dream trip consist of?

I WOULD LIKE TO GO TO ALASKA IN THE SUMMER WITH MY NON-SNOWBOARDING FRIENDS SO WE CAN HAVE SOME TIME TO HANG OUT. THE SCENERY IS PROBABLY SUPER SICK AND VERY WILD AND PRISTINE...

If you were given 1 million dollars today, what would you do tomorrow?

I WOULD CONTINUE EDITING THE FILM AND THINK ABOUT THE MILLION SITTING IN THE BANK…

Has being a snowboard filmer put you in a life or death situation?

YES...ALL THE TIME. AVALANCHES, BEATER TRUCKS, LONG TIRING ROAD TRIPS, FALLING OFF CLIFFS, BURNING SLEDS THAT MAY EXPLODE…

Who are other filmers/photographers that you admire?

I LIKE THE WORK OF NEIL HARTMAN. HE HAS A GOOD CONFIDENCE TO HIM AND IT SEEMS LIKE HE TRULY LOVES WHAT HE DOES…

Who usually comes up with the ideas for the shoots?

MOSTLY TADASHI. WE ALL HAVE INPUT BUT TADASHI HAS THE LOUDEST VOICE AND AMBITION…

Advice to other aspiring filmers?

SHOOT THINGS THAT ARE ENJOYABLE. SOMETHING THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE. FIND GOOD FRIENDS TO SHOOT. DON'T WORRY TOO MUCH ABOUT THE EQUIPMENT…AS YOU GET BETTER YOU WILL ACQUIRE BETTER EQUIPMENT. ONE STEP AT A TIME. AND IT IS ALL ABOUT THE IDEAS!

Within Heart Films ? Other than Tadashi, who do you think deserves the best part award.

EITHER AKIFUMI HIRAOKA OR SHOTA SUZUKI…

Who works the hardest?

TADASHI…ME!!!

Special THANKS?

TADASHI FOR GIVING ME A CHANCE. EVERYONE AT HEART FILMS. MY PARENTS, SIBLINGS, FRIENDS AND MY GIRLFRIEND, SACHI...ALSO SPINY SNOWBOARD SHOP!!!

Heart Films Interview PART 2 - Taro Koeji - FILMER/EDITOR

TARO AND KEIJI ON BLACKCOMB...

Name: Taro Koeji
Age: 1972 08 29
Occupation: Filmer/Editor Clothing producer - (Zerosen)

Where is your home town and where do you base yourself out of?

Sendai Japan. Whistler - winter.

How did you get involved with Heart Films?

Tadashi and I were talking about it 2 or 3 seasons ago…Last year it finally happened. I have known Tadashi before he became a pro snowboarder…He worked at a rental shop and I worked at a skateboard shop…We knew each other for over 10 years…I was making a different snowboard video so I had other commitments but finally we started it last year.

How did you begin your career as a professional filmer/editor?

I made skateboard videos in Japan and I learned how. I used to be a snowboarder and took footage of Tadashi and Jun and I enjoyed it so I started doing snowboard footage as well. I was taking footage for the guys so they can check out their snowboarding and Tadashi was doing crazy things…Things I could not imagine doing...So I started shooting more and more and riding less and less. I learned everything by trail and error..

What did you think you would be when you were younger?

A Pro Baseball player and then a pro skateboarder…

Did you ever aspire to be a professional snowboarder/skateboarder?

Yes. I even rode for Burton back in the day…

What was your first photo/video you ever took?

Tadashi’s video when we all lived together in Whistler when we were all starting out…

What was your most memorial day this season?

When Aki almost died in an avalanche…It was the first time that I saw an avalanche right in front of my face…I was always careful in the backcountry but that day was a wake up call. I felt that I needed to be able to ride my sled better and be more conscious of the dangers of the backcountry. Also Aki’s cab 9 was sick!

Your worst day this season?

There was a few of those this season…I rolled my sled and the sled ran over my head. THANK god I had my helmet on…My sled was rolling towards Tadashi and Takumi and I thought that they were toast as well as my sled was a right off. At the end, the sled rolled and luckily came to a stop before the next cliff band and everyone was okay…

Your best day this season?

There are so many of those too…Every time I went out on my sled was a good day!

Why do you like to film?

I like that the riders push themselves and do things that I can not do or imagine…I like capturing that. The feeling you get when you capture a good shot feels so good. I like how I get to see the action live…As I capture the image for everyone else to see. I have front row seats…

Do any riders stand out to you?

Tadashi - of course. He lands everything. His actions are fast. Everything about him is awesome…If you go up to the mountain, you will know Tadashi’s greatness…

Favorite shooting location/style?

Whistler backcountry. There is always something to shoot and it is always so much fun to explore. There is no greater place to shoot than the Whistler backcountry…I like street too but the backcountry is so new to me so I am addicted to it.

Gear?

Panasonic DVX 100A and NIZO 801 macro and Nikon Super 8.

Film or video?

I like both video and film. Video is convenient…it makes voice recording easy too…film has a nice feel… Sled? 2004 Ski Doo Summit 800 151.

Truck?

1995 Chevy K2500 4X4 with a Bulldog double sled ramp.

What do you do in the off season?

There is no off season…I shoot skateboarding and make my clothing line…

Where and who would your dream trip consist of?

A world wide trip with my friends and wife!

If you were given 1 million dollars today, what would you do tomorrow?

I would be thinking of how to use it. I would choose my own riders and shoot around the world and go everywhere on helipcopter!

Has being a snowboard filmer put you in a life or death situation?

Everytime you go into the backcountry, there is a possibility of death…

Who are other filmers/photographers that you admire?

I like a guy named WADAPP. He is a skateboard photographer out of Japan…I also respect DICE K MARU because he has a lot of good photos…

Who usually comes up with the ideas for the shoots?

Everyone.

Advice to other aspiring filmers?

Do what you love. If you want to be a filmer ? do it. That’s the only way. JUST DO IT.

Within Heart Films - other than Tadashi, who do you think deserves the best part award.

Akifumi Hiraoka of course…He works hard…You'll see when you see the DVD...

Who works the hardest?

KEIJI…

Special THANKS?

THE HEART CREW - Friends, My wife Hitomi and my family.

YoYoYo!

Well, the camps are all over for another season. What a killer year! Thanks to all the coaches and sponsors for making this year such a success. We love you guys.

The JumpCamp wrap-up party was killer. Thanks to DJ Souls and Klink & Polish for rockin' all night!

Coach Matt Brown has lost his cell phone again. This will be his 352nd phone he's lost and the folks down at Roger's are really loving him right now.

In sad JumpCamp news, our pal of 13 years passed away last week. We will all miss him greatly and remember the fun times with our furry bro. Goodbye buddy.

R.I.P. Griff 1994 - 2007

Our bro Jeremy Koreski www.jeremykoreski.com has landed the gig of senior photographer for Canada's new surf magazine: SBC Surf. The new surf mag is full of mind-blowing photography from both coasts so go out and grab the premiere issue on newsstands now and see Jer's killer pics for yourself!

Road Trips

We've been going to Mount Arrowsmith lots lately. It's like Forbidden's little brother and we love shredding and bbqing up there. The only thing about Arrowsmith is that the local whiskey jack's are real territorial and are constantly divebombing us and trying to snatch our food. One flew into my mouth when I was eating last trip, no lie.

Also on that trip Brian broke his board and Ole got caught in a nice size avalanche. Ole was alright since he's very experienced in the backcountry but it still shook him up pretty good. "Whoowee!", he had to say after swimming out of the snow. Avalanches are serious, even in the spring time so be careful and keep an eye on each other out there.

The critics have spoken: "This Was Your Life"delivers!

Nathaniel Vossen's painfully long awaited film: "This Was Your Life" is finally done and he premiered it on Thursday in Vic and Friday in Van and let me tell ya', the parties were awsome! Tons of people came out of the woodwork for both nights and we got to pal around with some old buds we haven't seen for a long time. Make sure to go see Jaydee at Onethirtythree in Courtenay or wherever your local skate/snowboard shop is and reserve yourself a copy of this magical film.
* Viewer discretion is advised

Thanks to all the sponsors for the prizes, giveaways and support over the years! Go out and support these companies and people that support JumpCamp.

See ya' at the beach!

No more bruising, no more pain, and very minor swelling....  I got myself a knee brace, and I'm going to give boarding a try on Friday... if it doesn't work out, i'll sit in the bar and throw pretzels at people. If it does, i'll be boading all weekend, and most of next week.

Board is waxed and ready to go...although the cat walked over it a few times when the wax was drying and now has wax covered paws... so much for not letting my housemates know I was hot waxing in the house.. it's a no no! :(

So, Michigan, here I come! Carnival at Boyne sounds like it,s going to be awesome! woohoo for road trips. Actually, it'll  be my first trip to the US that lasts more than a day! :)

JumpCamp breaking news, current events, the latest headlines, news photos, analysis & opinion on top stories, world, business, politics and general shred dogging!

Jib Jam-boree a hit!

The inaugural JumpCamp Jib Jam-boree rocked! Competitors came from far and wide with one thing in mind; JumpCamp Glory! We're talkin' spin-in, spin-out tricks on our brand new ledge ( thanks for the ledge Jim! ), frontside to backside slides on the rainbow rail and some crazy buttering of the muffin on the JumpCamp roof step-up, built especially for the comp. Other highlights include eating burgers and hot dogs in the rain. Thanks to all the sponsors and shreds for coming out! We're going to have another contest before the end of the season so check the website for dates.

Coach Matt Brown considers shaving his long locks after seeing Britney Spears' new do. "I think I'd look good with a buzz-cut", Brown said before press time.

Road trips!
We're been on a few road trips lately. At JumpCamp we really love holiday road.
We headed off to Las Vegas to hob-nob with the snowboard industry a little while ago. We rode around in limos, gambled and ate buffets daily.
Coach Javan Wyker, that lucky ass, is off to Revelstoke to test out all the new '08 Ski-Doo sleds. Hope he gets stuck lots! Haha...

Another beauty, was a road trip we did to see some pals in Nelson. It was -18, sunny and the powder was awesome! Our main man Marlin showed us around and shot pictures. Thanks Marl! Check out Gnarly Marly's website at www.marlinolynyk.com

Nathaniel Vossen's long awaited movie "This Was Your Life" is finally done.
No, for real, I'm not kidding this time 'round! You gotta believe me... C'mon dude, I'm serious. Nathaniel's been in production of this skateboard/snowboard/lifestyle movie for 12 years so you know the finished product is going to be amazing. He's told me that April is when he's going to be having all the premier parties for it around the Island and the Lower Mainland. Keep posted for premier dates, you don't wanna miss this!

Our bros at Onethirtythree have got a new website up! You can check out their team,skate/snowboard pics, spots, vids and sales going on at the shop. Pretty cool. Check it out at www.onethirtythree.com

CONCRETE - THE SKATE PARK ISSUE March 2007

Remember the mag Concrete Powder? Well, now it's just Concrete 'cause it's all skateboarding, no shred-doggin'. Anyways, the new Concrete No Powder has a killer article about Courtenay and some rad pics in the skateparks around here. Our good buddy Sascha Daley has a bunch of wicked pics in there including a sick one of him kickflipping in the corner of Courtenay's indoor bowl at The Linc and one of him ollieing off a wharf into the water in Tofino. Brrrrr, shrinky, shrinky! My favourite one is of some little kid in the old Courtenay park going huge over one of the hips and there's some good ones in the new park such as a sequence of local home-dog Calen Drysdale. Nice one boys. Go grab it on newstands or at your local skate shop yo!

SBC Skier Magazine: The North Issue, Volume 6 Issue 4
The new SBC Skier is out and there's a great article about Vancouver Island in it. Local two-planker legends Al Hokanson and Yasha Berg grace the pages of the magazine shralping such Island destinations as Mount Cain and Forbidden Plateau.

I thought you should know that...

JumpCamps are starting this weekend!

Session #1 Feb. 24-25 ( full )

Session #2 March 3-4
Session #3 March 17-18
Session #4 March 21-22
Session #5 March 24 ( one day Jam )
Camps are filling up! If you didn't already know bro, JumpCamp is for snowboarders who want to have fun and progress their skills, especially in the park and backcountry. So, if that's you, get your registration's in and secure your spot!

My Blog: I'm Back!!
By: oxnikiexo

I know I abandoned most of you this past summer.  I just couldn't keep up.  With getting a new car and everything I spent most of my summer doing road trips and going to the Pike (a place where kids & their cars chill and we street race/watch races).  Yeah I got my 'Lola' 2004 RSX.
That was exciting.

...But with the new snow season coming around I'm getting giddy again!  Only downfall is I've been on and off with a blasted cold.  Now I know I said I was going to get a board last year but that never fell through.  I'm hoping to change it this year but money is tight considering I'll be visiting France in April and those payments are crap enough.  I'm hoping to get the board this weekend though (I'm seriously loving the Lux '07) but I want to get the perfect freerider set up.  I'm signing up for an Okemo trip and some trips to Killington everything Thursday.  I'm just wicked lucky this year because some of my friends live up in Vermont near all the good mountains and hopefully I can take a few roadtrips and get some discounts.

My goal this winter:  Kick ass on the terrain and have fun snowboarding.

Love.

So I wake up this morning and it's snowing like crazy out, this is a good thing as the mountain opens in 8 days; although I gotta work opening day ... damn it hahaha.
So I've already chosen a name for the new shred flick, I know this may seem a bit early to be thinking about this kinda thing but I'm gonna get stickers made; anyway the new movie will be called *Full Winter Jacket*
OK there it is spread the word and expect great things from Chewy Media this year, lots of road trips, plus help from Sand Box whick is Kevin Sansalons thing so look out hahaha.
 ... Chew.

This past weekend was the Canadian thanksgiving; a time for giving thanks and for eating turkey with family. For me, visiting my folks for the holidays is a bit of a logistical headache since I live in Ottawa and my parents are nearly 800 km away in Windsor. Combine that with the fact that this time I was picking up my sister in Aurora, which makes the trip a lengthy drive for turkey.

To make the drive more pleasant, I decided to purchase one of those FM tuners so that I could listen to my iPod in the car. This way I would have the necessary eight to nine hours of consecutive music without having to flip CDs. This has the added benefit that since most of my music collection can be found on my iPod, I don't have to select which CDs to bring before I leave; I can listen to whatever fancies me at the moment (mostly).

The weekend was pretty low key and relaxed. Football being an important part of thanksgiving, I decided to check up on my Lions (being in close proximity to Detroit makes this easy). Things were looking good, they were up 10-3 at the half. This is when i decided it was time to leave. My sister needed to be back in Aurora for dinner time, so our departure window was quickly coming to a close. With care packages of leftover turkey in hand, we got in the car and made our way to the highway 401. That's when I decided that the soundtrack for our journey should be the entire Bouncing Souls discography; a glorious collection of 140 songs. So to choruses of “His name is Lamar Vannoy”, we peeled down Manning road to the 401.

Song 32: I realize that for a road trip, the incidences of insanity have been pretty much non-existent. This seems odd to me; something should be done about this.

Song 59: Still no insanity, but we're approaching Toronto, I decide we should make the requisite stop at Krispy Kreme for 700 calorie per unit goodness.

Song 68: We arrive at Krispy Kreme, my sister goes to the ladies room to be welcomed by the distinct odour of vomit. Meanwhile I'm buying a double dozen and I get a couple packs of glow in the dark stickers... boss. My sister, un-deterred by the vomit, picks a doughnut frosted like a jack-o-lantern... it's yummy.

Song 87: We arrive in Aurora, Stronach country. Maybe we'll run into Tie Domi being unfaithful... still no insanity.

I drop my sister off at home, grab a quick bite, check the sports channel to find out that the Lions in fact lost (jerks) then continue on my way to Ottawa; first south on the 404 then east on the 401... still no insanity.

Song 110: I crack open my Monster energy drink. Then stop in Marrysville to take a picture of the quarry. It looks cool all lit up at night. I wonder if I could jib it.

Song 112: I start wishing upon the stars.

Song 122: I drive by the Big Apple. Unfortunately it's closed because I wanted some pie. Plus the giant apple is cool; it makes me feel like I'm James in the giant peach.

Song 125: Someone in front of me gets pulled over; time to reduce my cruising speed.

Song 138: Johnny says he's bound by only six strings to this world. Also, I'm approaching Kingston.

Song 140: I've listened to the entire Bouncing Souls discography. I'm pleased because it occurs to me that “Here We Go” might be the best road trip song ever and it seems to be impossible to have too many “Oi”s in a punk song. I'm disappointed though, because I still have a ways to go and I'm out of Bouncing Souls. I quickly deal with this lack of continued Bouncing Souls love by putting on some Voodoo Glow Skulls... it's El Coo Cool.

I arrive in Ottawa roughly nine hours after leaving Windsor. I'm sick of driving so it's good to be home, but I'm still disappointed at the lack of amusing events on this road trip. I did learn a few things though which is important:

  • The Lions suck! They're still my team but I have no reservations in stating how much they suck.

  • 140 Bouncing Souls songs will get you from Windsor, through Aurora, to Kingston. Another 30 Voodoo Glow Skulls songs will get you the rest of the way to Ottawa.

  • Energy drinks are yummy and encourage me to do random things like stop and take a picture of a quarry.

  • Sometimes I'm boring, deal with it.

So that was pretty much my thanksgiving weekend in a nutshell. Although it seems the awesomeness factor was also on vacation this weekend, I enjoyed my time with family, and of course the turkey. I hope you all had a similarly pleasant weekend. I hope the awesomeness factor's hiatus is not too lengthy so I'll have something worth while to write about soon (I'm hoping it will be back for the Toronto Ski and Snowboard show). Until then, keep your strings only one turn out of tune.

Keep shreddin' the GNAR!

J.

I just feel like rubbing this in all your faces :)

as of now I am once again a Fort Collins resident, gah I love this town!!  I miss my mountains, but the foothills are treating me well.  In the full swing of mountain biking (Flower rode owns all trails so far) I've also found that I enjoy trail running (eff pavement) and have taken that up when I can get anyone to come with me.  The weather has been amazing, and the new kidos I've met even more amazing (YEAH NICO!!).  Anyway I'll be going on like this till the July 21st, but then I'm off to Italy for two weeks!  So excited, we are flying into Rome and going to day trip it out for the first week (so excited for cinque terra) and then staying at a resort in tuscany and living it up the second week.... I'll probably embarass myself horribly because I'll be drinking wine like theres no tomorrow, but I'm oddly okay with that.  Come home August 4th, hang out for a week try to get over jet lag, and then we're off for a road trip to North Carolina for a week... mmmmmm road trips, lets hope I can get by without yet another speeding ticket.  but yahhhhh, come home just in time to pack up all my shiat and head back to Boulder for another semester... ALMOST DONE!!!!!!!!!

enjoy the summer guys, and you asses who get to ride still, I hate you.  I dare you to go out with a bang like we did though (I love you pubfest and your 15 dollar all you can drink samples) :D

toodles....

Well, all I can say about this season is - AWESOME!! It was a great season, with a lot of snow and a lot of riding. Met some new friends, rode with old ones, went new places and rode old places. I'd have to say it was the best year I've had since I started riding, 5 years ago. Thanks to all my buddies that rode with my this year!! Hopefully there's a Hood road trip or a hikin' day in the cards for this summer.

Just spent last weekend in Sun River, ridin' Mt. Bachelor with Roman, Peyton, Peyton's buddy (Chris), my dad and Karashawn. It was a great weekend. Bachelor is cool, and Sun River is a great town. I would love to spend more time there... who knows, my dad really wants to buy a place down there. Maybe I'll be takin' more road trips to Oregon??!! I was able to ride Saturday and Sunday with little knee pain. Didn't want to push it too much, just in case. I'm suppose to be seein' some ortho docs soon, but I'm waiting on a call from the doctor. I would love to just wrap this knee stuff up and get it fixed. Insurance and money though... ties it all up in red tape :(

I highly recommned Bachelor to anyone who likes to ride.

My Blog: You Miss I
By: wildtrav84

I miss the winters with you, we would fly down the mountain like we owned it, for a while we did own it. No one and nothing mattered and try as they may they couldn’t stop us. My best memories of hauling ass down the mountain are those where you were right there with me. Days of powder hounding it turned into afternoons of doing doughnuts at the Meadows and in front of the school, which turned into nights at the Tap House and a race to Blockbuster to find a movie that we could make fun of. That year, you know which year I mean, that one whole year that didn’t have to happen, but did because I was a f*cking idiot, that year was torture. I hated everything and everyone including myself. But somehow, somehow we worked it out and we moved on from our devilish past to our satanic future. I remember parties at your house, mac and cheese, popcorn and Styrofoam fights. I remember racing you to school, calling you whenever I had a problem, making fun of everyone, throwing things at you during class, I remember you waking up at one in the afternoon and calling me because you knew that I had been up since seven waiting for you, shoplifting, you hitting on random people on the street and me trying unsuccessfully to be a good friend. Some mistook our friendship for a relationship, I didn’t care. Let them think whatever the f*ck they want, I liked hanging out with you and laughing so hard that I thought my sides were going to burst. If only I could tell you the shi*t I had to go through to be your friend, the people I had to go head to head with to make them understand and the people who wanted me out of the picture. Its funny how little I cared about them, I would take on the entire world with my bare hands if it meant spending my day with you. Sometimes I wondered if you had put people up to it, if you had asked them to talk to me, if you were faking it and wanted me gone. No one treated the same way you did, no one else could beat the shi*t out of me and then make me feel like the greatest person on earth. I had never met someone who I could spend all my time with and who could do the same for me. Even though I know it wasn’t the same for you, but I liked to think it was. Everyone else traded me in, left me for the new cool thing, even my friends would take off the second something better came along, but you would ignore that better thing as of to say f*ck off right to it’s face. Someone like me doesn’t get the chance to have a friend like that very often. Then one day I had a talk with another person who told me they saw you as the exact same kind of friend that I saw you as. Then another person saw you the same way, then another and another. You were best friends with everyone and what I thought was special was nothing more than a delusion of a dream world I wanted to so badly live in. I faded back, let myself pull away from you and give you the space you had probably wanted. Winter came in full force, one day we talked, and you came to visit, I was happy, but when you left I faded back again. Summer came, mother f*cker how I love the summers, I miss the summers with you. Racing people from one light to the next, road trips, hot days, crazy nights and some of the best times I’ve ever had. Summer was like rejuvenation, a reuniting of crime lords that had gone into hiding and a time I fear may be over. Summer went fast, too fast. School for you like normal, but for me something different. It was hard, at least for me, but I was immune to it, I thought I was. That letter you sent to me, that one single letter was the greatest gift I have ever gotten. Everything else in life stopped, I kept it with me for good luck. On the range, during drills, running, driving, fighting, everything and anywhere that damn letter was with me. I kept it to remind me. Suddenly it was summer again, but it would be a short summer. I remember the day I had to leave, how much I wanted to stay.

I should have stayed, even though you would have left a few days later, but that would have still givin a few more days. I left, you left. I want to go back, Will you ever come back? A 1,000 miles seemed like a million and now half way around the world seems like your gone forever. I guess I’ll fade back for the winter, we’ll see what happens in the summer.

News and stuff: Road Trips
By: ISDesign

We might of just signed a new heavy hitter to the snow team today. I'll let you know next week.

Dev's coming on the trade show tour with us this year. If by chance you're attending SIA (Vegas) or ISPO (Munich) you might be able to have a couple coldies with the man of mystery himself.

Hi everybody this is my blog about me, lol ok here goes nothing: I am Alena I have blonde hair, yup that's right I’m a blonde and you can tell by just talking to me lol (yeah I really am that dumb).  I am really not all that interesting, I do have some pretty funny stories though but they're only funny because their stupid things that I have actually done lol. I am defiantly not the brightest crayon in the box. In March I became a model but then I decided that I didn't want to be a model, yeah it doesn't make much sense but oh well, I think I am going to start modeling again because it was really fun, but I only like doing runway and I am to short to do runway so it kind of sucks but oh well. I have only ever done 2 major modeling things before I did a fashion show once and another time I was in a commercial. I use to write poetry but I stopped for a while and now I am not very good at  it I got a couple of awards for my poetry. I am defiantly not the smartest person when it comes to school (or any thing else really) lets just say that I don't have the best grades. I am defiantly addicted to orange juice. Sometimes I think that I can sing but then I get pushed back down to reality and realize that I really can't sing but that's ok. I soo can't dance at all even if I try really hard, I just suck lol. I know tons of people that live in other states, I know people in South Dakota, North Dakota, Indiana, Kansas, Washington, Illinois, Iowa, Arkansas, and I use to know some one in Wyoming but he moved back to Nebraska. I have tons of pets I have 2 dogs, 2 cats, and 2 rabbits. I have never been in an airplane before but that’s ok because I love road trips. I have like never been camping except for with my parents when I was like 7 and once with church and my parents were there so I don't count that because it sucked because they were like watching me the whole time, but the only other times I went camping was when I was like 7 I only went camping because we would go to visit family that lived far away and we didn't have a lot of money so we couldn't afford to rent a hotel or motel whatever they are called lol. I really want to go camping though it sounds like tons of fun. My parents are way overprotective I can't even go to church and volunteer or anything without my mom or dad going, it sucks so much they so don't trust me and I have no idea why and I hate it.  Not only are my parents overprotective of me but so is my brother so I am constantly having so me one looking over my shoulder and it sucks. My parents want me to be perfect and I don't want to be perfect I am not a barbie. Oh yeah and one other thing I can talk forever about absolutely nothing.
