World’s Top Riders Meet for the Union Square Street Sessions, Presented by Jeep®

PORTLAND, Maine, January 23, 2007 – Aura360 in partnership with NYC Parks & Recreation announces New York City’s first major pro snowboarding rail jam competition, The Union Square Street Sessions, presented by Jeep®. Thursday, February 8, the world’s top pro riders including Marc Frank Montoya, Danny Kass and Eddie Wall will compete head-to-head for a prize purse of $30,000.

"The Union Square Street Sessions will expose residents to the thrill of a professional snowboarding rail jam set in Union Square Park, the gateway to downtown Manhattan," said Parks & Recreation Commissioner Adrian Benepe.

Twenty-four men and eight women will participate in Union Square Street Sessions and will show off their skills on a customized urban rail fabricated at Mountain Creek Resort’s Jib Lab. This will be the largest such structure ever produced for an event of this kind in New York City.

“We have been working on the concept for a major pro snowboarding competition in New York City for several years,” said Dan Gacetta, partner of Aura360. “We wanted to produce a breakthrough event in a world class venue that would demonstrate the long standing involvement of urban communities in the sport of snowboarding.”

The Union Square Street Sessions will begin with athlete training at 3:00 p.m. leading up to the rail jam competition commencing at 5:30 p.m. During the contest, the neighborhood of Union Square will be transformed into an action sports block party with celebrity judges, live music provided by Fuse TV and a sponsor village comprised of action sports retailers.

The invitational pro field of top riders will be augmented by up-and-coming athletes selected at three Street Session qualifiers. Winners at The Block Party in Tahoe and Rails to Riches and Shop Wars events at Killington receive automatic qualifications.

Union Square Street Sessions partners include Jeep as the presenting sponsor and supporting sponsors Burton, Fuse TV, Snowboarder Magazine, Lat34.com, Boost Mobile, Plantronics, Mountain Creek Resort and Killington Resort.

“Freedom and adventure are among the core values of the Jeep brand, so we’re excited to sponsor The Union Square Street Sessions,” said John Plecha, Jeep Marketing and Global Communications. “Snowboarding is one of the many outdoor activities Jeep owners enjoy. Snowboarding in New York City fits naturally with the ‘go anywhere-do anything’ versatility of the Jeep brand and its vehicles.”

The winter sports celebrations will continue in New York City on Saturday, February 10 with NYC Parks & Recreation’s Winter Jam, a pro/am rail jam and winter carnival with snowshoeing and cross country skiing held in Central Park.

This past weekend was the Toronto Ski, Snowboard and Travel show. Being a community of snowboarders, I'm sure most people here were at least tempted with the prospect of deals on new gear. The EC crew decided that this would also be a suitable pre-tense for a meet, and since Laura was set to arrive in Canada around the same time, the need to get together and get shi*ttered was compelling. The fact that the 11th annual SBC party was being held on the same weekend was a happy co-incidence.

The road trip really began for me before I even left Ottawa. I was at my friend Emily's house drinking beers (oh wonderful Heineken) waiting for the red-eye departure time. I made it to the bus terminal happily intoxicated with a camel back full of Sour Puss in tow (give me a break, I needed some booze for the bus trip and it was the only thing I could find in the liquor cabinet that was strong and plentiful). So I met up with JC and we got on the bus en route to the legislative capital (from the national one).

The bus ride in itself was amusing, between sips of Sour Puss, I took the time to flirt with the girl sitting next to me. It must have worked because I remember her falling asleep on me; but you can't take my word for it... I was drunk. Upon our arrival to Toronto, I parted ways with my new friend; slightly embarrassed that I couldn't remember her name so I didn't press it (I wish I'd had an application form handy so I could give her one – see “Why the Fonz Rides a Motorbike”). We got the usual Toronto welcome: Hummers, dog shi*t (I assume dog), and profane transients. What I didn't count on was goth kids sporting gas masks in McDonald's. I'm not sure if those were for fashion or function and frankly I didn't care to stick around and find out.

We later met up with Laura who was stoked about three things since arriving in Canada: squirrels, bagels and Roots stores. This is when I learned that in Australia, to root means to shag. As Laura was educating me on this fact, she added that if you ever see someone posing for a picture in front of a Roots store, ten to one they are Australian.

The ski and snowboard show was relatively uneventful. I did score a steezy Ronin sweater for a deal at the show however; 60% off is none too shabby. We left before the Nitro team showed up but offered to give fifty points to anyone who punched Marc Frank Montoya (Snow PIG champion) in the face; there weren't any takers.

Later that night, I met up with the gang at the SBC party. It was a pain in the ass to get to since the turn from Lakeshore to Cherry was closed, but once there it was good times. We proceeded to drink, dance, watch snowboard videos and dance some more. It was a productive night for me since I figured out how to dance while holding three cans of beer (drinking from all of them) without spilling... much. I got wasted pretty quickly however; since every time I put a beer can down, someone would give me another. I also learned that it's cold behind the bar at the Docks; or so I would be led to believe by the waitress' nipples. I was too drunk to hide the fact that I was ogling but I think she was flattered (ha ha... I'm such a loser).

I had to leave the party a bit early because I was out of money for cab fare and my ride was leaving. Unfortunately I also broke the seal right around the same time so I asked my buddy to pull over in Don Mills so I could pee; I updated the rest of the EC crew via text message.

In the morning I had to fight my way back to the waking and find my way back to the bus depot to get home to Ottawa; I needed to either do some laundry or show up at work naked on Monday (the second option was becoming more and more appealing the more tired I felt). I met up with JC at the bus terminal and we boarded the 2:30 express back to Ottawa. The bus jumped on the Don Valley Parkway (or rather parking lot) so this promised to be a long express trip.

No sooner had we parked on the DVP then Carrie SMS'd me to find out how our bus trip was going. I said “We're stuck on the DVP, Toronto traffic sucks balls.” She told me that I should flirt with more girls on the bus and to fill her in on all the details afterwards. This sounded like a good idea with one notable exception, as I looked around I saw nothing but middle-aged women and I wasn't interested in cougar hunting. Fortunately, a closer examination of the “passenger manifest” showed me that there were a few cute girls on the bus. I told Carrie I'd keep her posted then promptly fell asleep.

A few hours later, we were arriving in Tweed. Having snoozed a good part of the bus ride thus far, I hadn't bothered trying to talk to the cute girls. At this point, the motivation was just not there, so I picked up my phone and wrote the following text message to Carrie: “FYI. I'm in the bathroom with Hillary and Maria. They say hello.” Here was her reply: “Haha! for real! i want details... Oh you're so joining the meter high club aren't you! and a threesome. You are my idol!” This caused tw distinct reactions in me: on the one hand I was flattered that Carrie thought enough of me to be able to pull something like that off; on the other hand, I was slightly disturbed by the fact that she thought I was dirty enough to try it... come on I'm a classy guy (ha!). In the end it became obvious that I was totally making it up since my updates were getting more and more ridiculous (I told her Hillary was going toset me up with her daughter).

Here's what I learned at the Toronto Ski, Snowboard and Travel Show:

  • Hummers are lame (OK I knew this already but as a snowboarder, global warming is an important issue to me).

  • If someone asks you for root in Australia, take inventory of who's asking and always wear a rain coat.

  • Toronto traffic sucks balls.

  • I seem to have developed a certain reputation as somewhat of a man whore. While it's flattering to know that people think I can score with any girl I want, it's disturbing that they also think I would have a threesome in a bus restroom with strangers.

The beauty of mayhem is that you'll generally learn something from it. I'm going to take the lessons I've learned from last weekend to heart; for the next little while, you'll find me scouring Roots store fronts for sexy Australian girls, flipping off Hummers and talking to my image consultants about this man-whore thing. So until next time...

Keep Shreddin' the GNAR

This past weekend was f*cking intense. I got back from NZ just a week ago, and it was straight into the Toronto Ski+Snowboard show, working at the SBC booth all 4 days. The parties were dope which made for not such a fun time getting out of bed in the morning and going to work! Thursday night was the In Case of Emergency premiere, and I was stoked to finally see the video and especially my part in it! Friday night was the You Look Good party and it's always fun to dress up for that, pink tie and all! THEN there was the Snowboard Canada party on Saturday night...too many beers that night made me still drunk the morning after, and still when i got to the ski show at noon! Luckily I was asked if I wanted to go home since it wasn't busy, so I gladly did. Oh and I got to meet Mark Frank Montoya (and Ikka Backstrom is there in the photo too) at the SBC party, I've decided he's my gangster of love. haha
And the part I'm most proud of from the whole weekend is that I spent a whopping
$10 total on clothes! Time to start saving my money and paying off my NZ trip.
Might be going to Ottawa this Saturday for a jib comp, and then Jibfest is in two weeks!

AND I'm having a Halloween party at my apartment in Toronto on Sunday, Oct. 29th! Let me know if you wanna come and if you need directions!

f*ck YEAH!

In the upgrade, I seem to have lost my previous blog type entries... ah well, time to start fresh I guess.

Natural snow finally hit southern California.  Too bad it took until March for it to happen!  But none-the-less, two feet of fresh snow is nothing to complain about, no matter how long it takes to arrive.

So, I finally went to the mountain on Wednesday, 3/15/06.  I have lots of excuses for not going sooner, but they're all lame and I'll spare you.  Took a couple more experienced buddies with me and we made it a good day.

Got up there pretty early... I think we arrived on the mountain at about 9am.  Weather was warmish, so I just took my shell and left all the other layers in the car.  First thing I had to do was pick up my season pass while my friends got their lift tickets.  It took an extraordinary amount of time, considering there was only one other person ahead of me.  In the end, it was worth it, because I managed to come out with an 06/07 pass instead of the 05/06 one I had originally paid for in April of '05!

So, passes gotten, time to hit the snow.  Usually, when I go boarding with the wife, we start on the Green slopes and slowly work our way up.  This is fine, since she's not as agressive as I am in her riding, and it gives me a chance to practice riding switch-stance.  Not this time!  My friends, being more experienced, went straight for the black diamond run!  Not to worry though... You have to take a blue run to get to it.  And besides, I was so pumped on being on the snow finally that I was happy to start with a little more challenge.  Also, the Black runs at Big Bear are only like Blue runs in Tahoe, so it's not too bad anyway.

I forgot to mention that I got a new set of bindings.  I got some Technine Marc Frank Montoya Pro bindings at a good price a couple weeks ago and spent an entire evening getting them setup on my board at home.  I learned a few things about how to tune bindings that night, and made some major changes to my previous binding setup.  One of the changes was setting up the high-back with more lean-in.  My first bindings had them set at nil, so i thought I'd go halfway on the setting for the new ones.  According to the little manual, it's supposed to help heel-toe/toe-heel transitions.

On the way up the hill on the lift, my calves started to hurt.  At first I thought it was just the pain of the board hanging on one foot while on the chair.  Once I strapped in and started down the hill though, the pain just got worse and worse, and by the end of the run it was killing me.  Somewhere a long the way, I remembered having set the high-backs in, so at the next lift, I put them back to nil.  And what do you know... the pain went away!

On the second run I noticed how much of a difference the high-back setting had made on my transitions.  On the first run, I didn't have any trouble making my turns (aside from the pain).  On the second run, and all the runs afterward, I always felt a just a little bit sketchy going from toe-side to heel-side.  I didn't feel like fiddling with my bindings anymore, so I just left them at nil and worked on building my confidence with better technique instead.

The snow quality was pretty good.  It had snowed heavily on Friday and Saturday, and we were there on Wednesday.  It had packed down and frozen a bit, so it was a little hard, but softened up nicely as the day progressed.  I did manange to get a few scratches in the wax on my board though, as well as a really bad one from a rock that I thought was a glove or something equally soft.  No permanent damage though.

We stopped early for a brief lunch to miss the crowd in the Base Food area and were back on the snow by noon.  There were a surprising number of late-comers, as suddenly, there was a line for the lift.  We made several more runs on the less crowded mid-mountain lifts and called it a day at 2pm.  It was a good move, as we hit little traffic on the way home and made it back into San Diego by 5pm.

All in all, an excellent day, and I can't wait for next weekend when another storm is supposed to drop more snow!

-Exhibition: 932 x 6
-Geronimo: 1119 x 4
-Accelerator: 525 x 2
-Amusement Park: 519 x 2
-Showtime-Silver Connection: 791 x 2

Total runs: 16
Total Vertical: 13738

My Blog: Summer 2005
By: SASS

Campers were pumped to be riding big mountains, building backcountry jumps and thrashing the park while learning how to speak Spanish.  Special activities like traditional Argentine barbeques, sushi night and water polo kept them busy when we weren’t on the mountain.

We were lucky have some cool guest appearances.  Alterna action films came for two weeks in July with JF Fortin, Matt Beardmore and Travis Williams.  In the middle of August Mark Frank Montoya visited us and was actually more stoked about Spanish classes then some of the campers (YEA, we gave him homework!).  The Airblaster crew (Travis Parker, Robbie Sell, Sean McKay, Jake Welch, Jed Anderson, ect…) showed up in the end of August just in time to catch some pow and rip the mountain in two pieces.  During the super late September session Pat Milbery was on a daily mission to slay everything while we introduced him to some of the finer aspects of Argentine culture.  Some of the skiers in Las Lenas during our sessions were Dan Treadway, Jen Ashton, Billy Poole, Trevor Hiatt, Garrett Russell and Ryan Mckeeman.

Our new web site will have more details about what actually happened this summer so we will be sure to send you the link once it is ready.  For now the word is that SASS has been killing it in Argentina all summer.   See you soon!

 Thanks.

Yay it's my Friday, and I'm pretty sure I have to do my fitness test either on Tuesday or Wednesday, not sure. Oh well, run around a track a few times and call it a day for the most part, if there are lots of people waitin till the last minute to get it done, I'll probably even cheat, lol j/k I would never do such a thing, uhhhhh, yeah thats right! Anyway, work is f*ckin boring right now, no planes are broken for me so yup, another lazy day. I can't wait, I'm hopefully buying my new setup soon! So far I've got a few choices, the one I like the most for now is the Endeavor Board of Directors model. It turns me on, lol. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna pick up the Mark Frank Montoya bindings from Technine, but don't know for boots yet. but yeah, I really need a new setup, I miss my snowboarding! Courtesy of the Air Force I haven't done that for 2 seasons now. It's like life is draining from me. My leave better get approved too. I have 23 days of leave so far and I forecasted to use it in late December, those f*ckers better give it to me or I'll be extremely pissed. I kind of miss Idaho too right now, only because there isn't a lot of people there, I really would enjoy some peace right now.
