Whistler Blackcomb's annual Showcase Showdown went off last Saturday as onlookers crowded into Skiers' Plaza and onto patios to watch the action at the base of Whistler Mountain. After a hard fought battle, Caley Vanular claimed first place in the women's category. Second place went to Molly Milligan and third went to Janelle Prtichard. Meanwhile, Andrew Burns took first in the men's category, while Rusty Ockeneden claimed second place and Mike Osachuk took third.

The six riders, who won a total of $5,000 cash and prizes from event sponsors, including Nixon headphones and Sandbox helmets, will also be featured in Sandbox's next snowboard film "Shine On."

In its twelfth year, the Showcase Showdown has enjoyed another successful transformation and has proven once again why Whistler Blackcomb's Nintendo Terrain Parks are ranked No. 1 in North America.

This year's course was inspired by the mini-parks in locals' backyards all over Whistler. The slopestyle course design, which included rails and industrial-style jib features with happy faces, was a collaboration of Showcase Team Manager Brad Broughton; Kevin Sansalone of Sandbox Films; Steve Petrie master park-builder and designer and builder of the 2010 Olympic Halfpipe; and Whistler Blackcomb's Park Rangers.

This is gonna be one helluva show.....

PortersTahoe.com, Burton Snowboards, Corona, Transworld Snowboarding, Alpine Meadows, Ubisoft, Sobe and the Supersuckers are teaming up on the evening of Saturday, October 25th at The Underground club on 555 East 4th Street in downtown Reno, Nevada to present the Burton Team movie It’s Always Snowing Somewhere. A 7pm all-ages, free showing will be followed at 9pm by a $4.99 cover for a 21-and-over premier of the movie and after-party featuring the Supersuckers. Tickets for the second, 21+ screening are available online HERE or at any of Porters’ four North Lake Tahoe shop locations.

The movie It’s Always Snowing Somewhere follows the Burton Team traveling the northern hemisphere, from Austria to Alaska. It features action footage from Shaun White, Terje Haakonsen, Natasza Zurek, Gigi Rüf, JP Solberg, Heikki Sorsa, Nicolas Müller, Tadashi Fuse, Frederik Kalbermatten, Jeremy Jones, Jussi Oksanen, DCP, Mads Jonsson, Trevor Andrew, Keegan Valaika, Kevin Pearce, Danny Davis, Kazuhiro Kokubo, Mikkel Bang, Mikey Rencz and Peetu Piiroinen.

There are only ten other screenings of the movie across the country, and this will be the only showing anywhere in Northern California or Nevada this year. The first 100 people at the family-friendly, all-ages, free showing at 7pm sharp will receive a free lift ticket voucher to Alpine Meadows Resort and a free tour stop t-shirt. An autograph session will follow at 8pm with Burton Snowboards team riders Jussi Oksanen, Danny Davis, Kevin Pearce, Mason Aguirre, Heikki Sorsa, and Kelly Clark scheduled to appear. Doors open at 9pm for the 21+ movie and after party. Tickets are $4.99 in advance and this is expected to be a sold out show.

Local Tahoe bands Cohesion and Hunks of Metal will play before the second showing of the movie. Hunks of Metal feature early pioneers and legends of snowboarding such as Terry Kidwell, Shawn Farmer, and Bob Klein. When asked to play at the event Bob said, “Who has a chance to open for not only the Supersuckers, but a world class snowboard movie as well? We’re looking forward to rocking the Underground for the first time, hopefully not the last, unless we get too drunk and rowdy!” Immediately after the 11pm screening of It’s Always Snowing Somewhere the greatest live rock ‘n roll band in the world – Supersuckers – will take the stage for a rowdy and raucous set. More local bands are scheduled to finish the late night / early morning in the back lounge room while The Underground’s resident DJ will spin the rest of early morning in the main showroom.

Sound the didgeridoos, the 2008 Burton Australian Open has come to a close and Torstein Horgmo (NOR) and Jamie Anderson (USA) have come out on top, winning the men’s and women’s slopestyle competition today at Perisher Blue Resort. After a week of dodgy weather, the sun broke through this morning, illuminating the 400m long slopestyle course that featured a downrail, battleship rail and three massive kickers.

With a field comprised of an Olympic gold medalist, the men’s and women’s New Zealand Open slopestyle winners, two TTR World Champions, six Winter X-Games medalists and some of Australia’s best, the day promised some serious riding and it didn’t disappoint. While the standard was high in both the men’s and the women’s fields, both winners were stand outs with Torstein Horgmo nearly ten points clear of Danny Davis (USA) and Jamie Anderson an impressive 15 points clear of her nearest rival, Raewyn Reid (CAN).

Horgmo’s $7,500 AUD winning run featured a fakie backside tail 270 on the downrail, into a switch 50/50 Cab 180 on the battleship, followed by a backside 720 melon, into a frontside 900 indy, finishing with a ridiculously big switch backside 1260 melon. “I feel really good right now,” said Torstein. “It’s crazy, I thought this course was so much fun, better than last year; you could do bigger tricks and have way more flow through the park. Everybody killed it today so I feel really fortunate to end up on top.”

Danny Davis landed 2nd place with a run that included back-to-back 900’s, riding away with $3,500 AUD. Eric Willet (USA) took home $1,500 AUD for his 3rd place finish, his winning run featured a switch backside 900 mute and frontside 1080 tailgrab.

Women’s slopestyle champion Jamie Anderson continued to be unstoppable in her pursuit for perfection with another podium win. She started her winning run with a tailpress on the downrail, followed by a noseslide-to-fakie on the battleship, sticking a switch backside 360 stalefish on the first kicker, into a Cab 540 mute on the second, finishing with an frontside 540 melon. “I am so stoked to win, it was a really fun day and we had great weather,” said Anderson. “The other girls were sweet; everyone was riding so well, it was an awesome day.”

Raewyn Reid had an impressive showing for the ladies with a backside lipslide on the downrail and a 50/50 frontside boardslide on the battleship, taking home 2nd place and $3,500 AUD. Kara Rennie (CAN) won $1,500 AUD and the third place title by styling it out on the rails with a backside lipslide and 50/50 to boardslide.

With the Burton Australian Open over, it’s on to the Canadian Open, taking place at CODA’s Canada Olympic Park in Calgary from December 1-7, 2008. The Canadian Open is the third stop on the 2008-2009 Burton Global Open Series. Jamie Anderson and Luke Mitrani are currently in the lead for the $100,000 Burton Global Open Series Championship title. The BGOS boasts the most lucrative cumulative prize purse in snowboarding – over $900,000 – with equal prize money to men and women

After today’s Swatch TTR 5Star slopestyle event, Jamie Anderson continues to defend her 2007/08 TTR World Tour Champion title, while Chas Guldemond maintains his tour lead. For more information, visit www.ttrworldtour.com.

The land down under was taken over today as crowds flocked to watch the final men’s and women’s halfpipe competition at Perisher Blue Resort. Always a crowd favorite, the halfpipe finals were not to be missed as a field of impressive names threw down runs that were equally as impressive.

The men were first to drop and it was Mason Aguirre who showed strength early on with the highest first run score of 92.83. Fellow FREND Luke Mitrani topped Aguirre’s score with his second run that consisted of a frontside 900 tailgrab, followed by a backside Japan air, into a frontside 720 indy, finishing with a switch double backflip, the likes of which have never been seen at a halfpipe competition in Australia.

Not to be outdone, Aguirre rose to the challenge with a run that started with a Cab 1080 mute, followed by a frontside 900 melon, into a backside rodeo 540 indy, finishing with an alley-oop backside rodeo 720 indy, earning him the win and $7,500 AUD with a margin of less than one point. Aguirre had this to say of his win, “It was tough. Luke made me work for it but it was so much fun riding with the crew. The pipe held up really well and I’m stoked to win here in Oz.”

Mitrani held on to 2nd place and rode away with a big check for $3,500 AUD. Markus Malin, who landed 2nd place in New Zealand at the Burton Open last month, took home another podium win for Finland with 3rd place and $1,500 AUD.

In the women’s competition, Olympic gold medalist, Hannah Teter took the lead early on, with a technical run that combined back-to-back 540’s, into a 360 indy, followed by a Cab 720, finishing with a melon to fakie. “The pipe was really fun, everyone was riding super good considering the snow was a little slow,” said Teter of her win. “It was really motivating watching the guys and the girls throw down their tricks.”

Giving Teter a run for the money was Paulina Ligocka out of Poland, who has not competed in nearly a year due to injury. Ligocka showed no signs of struggle as she stuck a 720 on the first hit and landed a McTwist in her highest scoring run, taking home 2nd place and $3,500 AUD. New Zealand Open halfpipe champion Jamie Anderson won $1,500 AUD and the third place title. Anderson, the back-to-back X-Games slopestyle gold medalist and winner of the slopestyle competition at the New Zealand Open last month will take on her competitors tomorrow during slopestyle finals.

Luke Mitrani and Jamie Anderson are currently in the lead for the $100,000 Burton Global Open Series Championship title. After today’s Swatch TTR 5Star halfpipe event, Hannah Teter jumped 134 ranks into World No. 21, her highest rank ever. Jamie Anderson stays in World No. 1 as well as Chas Guldemond. Luke Mitrani and Stephan Maurer both entered into the Swatch TTR Top 5.

1 Mason Aguirre USA BURTON 94.17 $7,500

Today saw the second day of the Burton Australian Open go down at Perisher Blue Resort, where men’s and women’s halfpipe qualifications took place. Athletes from all over the world were vying for a coveted spot in Thursday’s semi-finals and a chance to grab a piece of the $50,000 AUD prize purse.

The men were first to drop into the pipe this morning under cloudy skies, where 14 men were boiled down to six. Sage Kotsenburg (USA) took the top spot in men’s halfpipe qualifications by putting down a solid run that started off with a frontside 900 melon into a backside 540 mute, followed by a frontside 720 indy, into a switch frontside 720 mute, finishing with a stylish melon to fakie. Aussies Scotty James, Samuel Murphy and Charlie Steinbacher, in addition to Chris Sörman (POL) and Marco Grilc (SLO) advance on and will be competing against invited riders Mason Aguirre (USA), Danny Davis (USA) and Kevin Pearce (USA), among others.

3 Marko Grilc SLO BURTON 80.17
4 Scott James AUS --- 74.50
5 Samuel Murphy AUS --- 73.67
6 Charlie Steinbacher AUS FORUM 55.67

The women’s field was dominated by Paulina Ligocka (POL) who stuck an extremely strong run, outscoring her nearest competitor by over 20 points. Ligocka, riding in her first competition after an injury set her back last year, proved that she is still a force to be reckoned with. Her second run, which scored her a massive 89.17 points, started off with lofty frontside air, followed by a method air, into a 540 tailgrab, followed by a backside indy, finishing with a 720.

Joining Ligocka will be two Aussies, Erin Tanner and Lauren Staveley who advance on to Thursday’s semis and will take on the likes of NZO halfpipe winner Jamie Anderson (USA) and Olympic gold medalist, Hannah Teter (USA).

“The men and women’s halfpipe qualifiers showed a glimmer of brilliance with the inspired riding of Sage Kotsenburg of the US and young Scott James of Australia leading the way,” said Competition Director, Greg Johnson. “Paulina Ligocka showed that she is back in a big way by locking in the top spot, truly an outstanding effort.”

So how's life as the new photo editor at SBC?
Life is definitely good working with SBC, Working for a mag is something I've hoped for since I was a wee boy.  When I found out that I did get the job there was a few days of disbelief that it was for real and then my head swelled and I knew I was officially rad.

What was it like when you finally got told that you are now working at SBC?
This season I did the most travelling I have yet for sure.  Being able to travel with your friends and call it work is still kind of strange.  It was a great season and I hope to do it all again next year.

You've been on the road a lot, how's that?
Travelling in India was awe inspiring, anywhere you look there's an epic photo waiting to be taken.  Getting around and communicating is really easy which makes it that much better.

How did you like travelling around in India?
One of the best parts of travelling this year would have to be visiting the Taj Mahal.  It's something that has to be seen in person since no photo or words can do it justice, truly amazing!!

Do you have any stories about the best and worst moments of travelling this year?
You have to go with the flow when you travel so any bad moments usually turn rad pretty quick.

You must see a lot of young photographers sending you their photos, any tips for them?
It's been really cool to have young photogs send me there shots and as for tips I just tell them to try new things and be aware of some golden rules.

Anyone this year that is blowing you away behind the lens?
There have been a few photogs that have definitely impressed me this year but you'll have to check out the mag to see their work first hand and judge for yourself.

What new riders do you think are making a big splash in 2008?
Andrew Geeves and Seb Toots have been on a tear this season.  I think they're both going to have a lot coming out next season as far as photos and video parts.

What trend in 2008 do you see us regretting in the future?
All trends are ones that are usually regretted and I try not to pay attention.  Being conscious of Global warming and how you can help out is a trend that won't be regretted though.

What do you think of the Whistler snowboard scene?
The Whistler scene can be like high school if you want it to or it can be amazing.  Depending on the person it can be good or bad.  I've been having a great time here for years and I plan on continuing to do so. Bottom line is that people all end up here for one reason, the mountains not the scene.

Do you still get to go out and shoot as much as you like?
Ya I've been able to shoot as much as I did before so nothing's changed as far as that.

Anything important coming up that we should know about?
I'm turning 29 this summer which should be pretty rad, want to come to my party?

Where can we see your work?
Snowboard Canada is the best place but just check photo credit and it might be mine somewhere else as well

Thanks, any shout outs?
Thanks to my wife Dawn, Family and friends and anyone I've met along the way.  Good times had.

Torah Bright & Peetu Piiroinen Win $100,000 Burton Global Open Series
Shaun White & Cheryl Maas Drive Home New Volvo C30 R-Designs
STRATTON, Vt. (March 22, 2008) – Glory, fame and fortune were on the line today at the US Open Snowboarding Championships, where the world's top riders battled for five different prestigious titles, two Volvo C30 R-Designs and cash awards worth a total of $471,500. Today's big winners were 2008 BGOS champions Torah Bright (AUS) and Peetu Piiroinen (FIN); 2008 US Open halfpipe champions Torah Bright (AUS) and Shaun White (USA); 2008 Men's Swatch TTR World Snowboard Tour Champion Kevin Pearce (USA); Volvo Most Valuable Riders Cheryl Maas and Shaun White; and 2008 US Open big air champions Cheryl Maas and Tim Humphreys.
Last season's Burton Global Open Series champion Torah Bright had this to say about her second BGOS title and $100,000 title win, "I had tears coming down under my goggles. I just couldn't believe that I could win the title twice. I'm really very happy."
Finnish rider Peetu Piiroinen, who has never won a major title in his snowboard career, said, "I never thought I had a chance to win the BGOS title. I just cannot wait to call my family in Finland – they won't believe it!"
The action-packed day kicked off with the men and women's halfpipe finals, where history repeated itself when 2007 US Open halfpipe champions Shaun White and Torah Bright once again took first place and $20,000 each. Just like at last year's US Open, Shaun also won the Volvo for his overall riding at the event.
At the start of the halfpipe finals, four men and two women were still in contention for the $100,000 Burton Global Open Series title, and every rider in the running had calculated what ranking he or she needed to take home competitive snowboarding's biggest single payout. In the best-of-three run finals Torah Bright took the lead early with a run that featured a backside 3 Indy, switch backside 720 mute (Winner of Zune Best Trick and $5,000), backside 540, melon-to-fakie with a Cab 720 at the end. Coming off a win at yesterday's slopestyle, Shaun White won his third US Open halfpipe title, ending his day with a victory lap. Shaun's winning run consisted of a first-hit frontside 1080 stalefish to Cab 1080 into his signature frontside 540 stalefish, McTwist, frontside 900 with a backside 900 ender—all huge and flawless. Scotty Lago clocked the Zune Best Trick and $5,000 with a double cork frontside 1080.
Later that night, the big air went down and the Volvo Most Valuable Rider awards were given out. Tim Humphreys did every trick in the book from frontside and backside 1080s, backside and switch backside 720s and a backside rodeo 540 to win the title. Cheryl Maas also impressed the judges with her trick arsenal that included a frontside 360, backside 540 and a backside 720 tailgrab (SoBe $2,500 Sick Trick award), earning her the top spot.     Colonies has been down for a long ass time now.... anyone thats been around long enough knows that its been down before and it wont be the last time. Anyways, the latest few months have been pretty good for me as I've been on so many freakin' snowboard.com vacations!

Starting off the season was 36 hours of Keystone back in Nov/Dec. Insane amount of drinking and partying to offset the lack of snow. Anyone who thinks they've partied hard needs to come out to 36 hour this year... by that time I should be living out there!! Woo!
19 people packed in a condo is pretty intense along with massive amounts of alcohol. What a treat. I've never partied so hard in my life.. and trust me, I have done some f*ckin partyin' kids. Honestly I could talk about 36 forever If I remembered half the shi*t that happened... I was tanked. I met a lot of people that I've known for years thanks to snowboard.com and Daff is insane for booking that shi*t overnight!

So in between trips Ive been partying at home drinking every weekend and spending money like its going outta style, realizing that I really hate Michigan. Once a super fun state cuz of my passion for the automotive field, Its about gone now. I guess cuz I've now taken my hobby as a job I really lose the fun factor to all the bullshi*t involved with having a job.

Uhm well on to my next trip which was back to Colorado, A mini trip with some long time friends, and a solid snowboarding trip to offset the lack of riding I did at 36. A-mazing dude! Breckenridge and Vail= Sex. Best snowboarding trip I've ever been on... and probably the first time Whit, Kristi, and Kevin have ever seen me completely naked due to the fact that I did forget my swim trunks. Ah whatever. I made their fantasies come true.

So again back in Michigan with a solid feeling, dude I'm 100% sure I want to be in Colorado for good by the end of the summer this year. No ones making any money right now, me included! Lame but, I think I can make it work. So that wraps up Feb and I did forget to mention.. My Freakin b-day was Feb 3rd.. but it wasnt a big deal.

Aright now... I've known Becka (smsbrdr) forever! Prolly like 4 or 5 yrs now and meeting her at 36 hr, I realized dude.. this chick is freakin cool as hell. We were talking a bit and what do ya know.. all these years she lives 3 god damn hours from me. Sick... I've NEVER been to Canada! So yeah Kyle (BushyV1) also realizing, what an opportunity, decides he's in for this one. Canada is pretty boring when yur driving through it. Haha the only thing that saved us from turning around was the fact that Becka and Oli were ready to kick some ass and take some names at the bar later that night! We did some pretty intense drinking! I even got to choose which chick I wanted to hook up with. I won't get into that any further haha.. lets just say I shouldn't drink so much. Becka and Oli are freakin great. I don't think they realized just how loony I am though... Here I am changing lives and spreadin' the love Beesh! Kyle drives like shi*t, but after this trip I gotta respect the guy more. He did perform oral sex on me while he was driving. It was the worst road head I've ever had but, impressive none the less. Haha jokes. Don't kill me Kyle. OH! So the show me yur boobs sign... haha no boobs were shown but, I did get a middle finger! Awesome... maybe she likes melbatoast better.

So yeah I just got back from Canada today.. It was awesome! Totally weird though.. I had like 24 bucks in change in my pocket. Someone should have told me they have 2 dollar coins. Ah.. and that chick at the bar with a skull on her skirt.. My god do I wanna nail her... she was f*ckin hot!

Not gonna say I love any trip over the other, each one was different in their own ways, what I can say though, We Snowboard.commers love to drink some f*ckin alcohol. I can't wait to see what I get myself into next. I'm really interested in meeting more of my friends! I have yet to be disappointed by anyone, well besides the fat chick I met off here... I dislike her mucho. Dude.. holy shi*t.. if you read this whole thing.. You must really want to f*ck me, you Beesh! Playa playa big balla fo shizzle you guys just keep it real because I f*cking love you motor boatin sum beeshes!
